  • Devolatilization of the Refuse Derived Fuel(RDF) which is produced at WonJu in Korea was characterized in air atmosphere with variation of heating rate(10, 20 and $30^{\circ}C/min$) in TGA. The results of TG Analysis have shown that the pyrolysis and char combustion of the RDF occurred in the range of $350{\sim}700^{\circ}C$ depending on the heating rate. Activation energy of the RDF which was determined by using Friedman and Ozawa-Flynn-Wall method was in the range of 14.44~18.40 kcal/mol. Also, reaction order(n) and pre-exponential factors(A) were 1.219 and $3.02{\times}10^5$ by using Friedman method, respectively. In order to find out the devolatilization mechanism of the RDF, twelve solid-state mechanisms defined by Coats Redfern Method were tested. The results of the Coats Redfern Method have shown that chemical reaction is the effective mechanism by comparison with the value of the activation energy which was derived from the Friedman and Flynn-Wall-Ozawa method and correlation coefficient from twelve solid-state mechanisms of Coats Redfern Method. The solid state decomposition mechanism of the RDF was found to be a decelerated $F_1$ type, random nucleation with one nucleus on the individual particle.

  • The kinetic coefficients far decomposition of the cured phenol resin (SC-1008) using a modified Arrhenius relationship have been determined from thermogavimetric analyses (TGA). The kinetic parameters were determined by multiple heating rate technique developed by Freideman and Henderson. Weight loss (decomposition) and weight loss rate (decomposition rate)were measured and recorded for three heating rates; $5^{\circ}C$/min ,$10^{\circ}C$/min, and $20^{\circ}C$/min. Relatively good agreement was obtained between measured and calculated decomposition as a function of temperature. By separating the reaction, the reaction order and pre exponential factor become empirical parameters which provide a "best fit" of the data. However, this method yields an extremely accurate reproduction of the thermograms over a wide range of heating rates. This is the desired result for kinetic parameters used in thermal models.al models.

  • In this work, thermal decomposition mechanism based on kinetic parameters and thermal stability of carbon fiber-reinforced carbon matrix composites (C/C composites), have been studied under high temperature oxidative conditions with addition of tetra-ethylorthosilicate (TEOS) as an oxidation inhibitor. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was executed to evaluate the thermal decomposition mechanism and thermal stability of C/C composites in the temperature range of 30 ~ $850^{\circ}C$. As a result, the kinetic parameters of the composites impregnated with TEOS, i.e., activation energy for thermal decomposition ($E_d$), order of reaction (n) , and pre-exponential factor (A) were evaluated as 136 kJ/mol, 0, and 2.3$\times$$10^9s^{-1}$, respectively. Especially, the IPDT and $E_d$ of C/C composites impregnated with TEOS were improved largely compared with the composites impregnated without TEOS, due to the formation of $SiO_2$ on composite surfaces, resulting in interrupting the oxygen attack to carbon active site in the composites.

  • The char oxidation characteristics of ashless coal with a relatively low ash content and high heating value were experimentally investigated at several temperatures (from $900^{\circ}C$ to $1300^{\circ}C$), in various oxygen concentrations (from 10% to 30%) under atmospheric pressure in a drop tube furnace. The char reaction rate was calculated from the exhaust gas concentrations (CO, $CO_2$) measured by FT-IR, and the particle temperature was measured by the two-color method. In addition, the activation energy and pre-exponential factor of ashless coal char were also calculated based on the Arrhenius equation. The results show that higher temperature and oxygen concentration result in a higher reaction rate of ashless coal, and the activation energy of ashless coal char is similar to that of bituminous coal.

  • A novel energetic material, 1-amino-1-(2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazinyl)-2,2-dinitroethylene (APHDNE), was synthesized by the reaction of 1,1-diamino-2,2-dinitroethylene (FOX-7) and 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine in N-methyl pyrrolidone (NMP) at 110 $^{\circ}C$. The theoretical investigation on APHDNE was curried out by B3LYP/6-311+$G^*$ method. The IR frequencies analysis and NMR chemical shifts were performed and compared with the experimental results. The thermal behavior of APHDNE was studied by DSC and TG/DTG methods, and can be divided into two crystal phase transition processes and three exothermic decomposition processes. The enthalpy, apparent activation energy and pre-exponential factor of the first exothermic decomposition reaction were obtained as -525.3 kJ $mol^{-1}$, 276.85 kJ $mol^{-1}$ and $10^{26.22}s^{-1}$, respectively. The critical temperature of thermal explosion of APHDNE is 237.7 $^{\circ}C$. The specific heat capacity of APHDNE was determined with micro-DSC method and theoretical calculation method, and the molar heat capacity is 363.67 J $mol^{-1}K^{-1}$ at 298.15 K. The adiabatic time-to-explosion of APHDNE was also calculated to be a certain value between 253.2-309.4 s. APHDNE has higher thermal stability than FOX-7.

  • Forest fires in Korea, having forest coverage of 70%, have kept increasing in number and scale since the middle of 1990's. Although deposited fallen leaves in forests such as herbaceous plants, conifers, and broadleaf trees are used as a medium for forest fires, the pyrolysis and combustion characteristics of the various species of trees are hardly studied. Oriental oak is the representative broadleaf tree in domestic forests, and pyrolysis and combustion of oriental oak leaf were carried out by thermogravimetic analysis (TGA). The leaf of oriental oak was ignited at $239^{\circ}C$ whereas pyrolysis started at $250^{\circ}C$. The corresponding kinetic parameters including activation energy and pre-exponential factor were determined by differential method over the degree of conversions. The values of activation energies for pyrolysis were increased as the conversion increases from 10% to 80%, whereas those of values were decreased during combustion.

  • The experiment was designed to study the char oxidation kinetics of pulverized coals commonly utilized in Korean power plants. The kinetics has been estimated using the Semenov's thermal spontaneous ignition theory adapted to coal char particle ignition temperature. The ignition temperature of coal char particle is obtained by a direct measurement of the particle temperature with photo detector as well as by means of a solid thermocouple which is used as both a heating and a measuring element. The ignition temperatures for subbituminous coal, Wira, and bituminous coal, Yakutugol, have been measured for 4 sizes in the range of 0.52-1.09 mm. The ignition temperature of the particle increases with the increasing diameter. The results were used to calculate the activation energy and the pre-exponential factor. As a result, the kinetic parameters are in an agreement with ones reported from other investigations.

  • $[Mn_{12}O_{12}(O_2CPh-4-SMe)_{16}(H_2O)_4]{\cdot}7CH_2Cl_2$ (1), a new single-molecule magnet complex has been successfully synthesized by substitution of acetate ligand of Mn12ac with 4-(methylthio)benzoic acid. Complex 1 crystallizes into triclinic P$\overline{1}$ with a = 18.321(3) $\AA$, b = 19.011(3) $\AA$, c = 27.230(4) $\AA$, $\alpha$ = 86.973(3)$^{\circ}$, $\beta$ = 76.919(3)$^{\circ}$, $\gamma$ = 87.613(3)$^{\circ}$, and Z = 2. In complex 1, one Mn(III) ion has an abnormal Jahn-Teller elongation axis oriented at an oxide ion. Complex 1 has two out-of-phase ac susceptibility peaks in the 2-4 K and 4-7 K regions. Effective anisotropy energy barrier and pre-exponential factor are $U_{eff}$ = 45.95 K, 1/$\tau$0 = 8.6 ${\times}\;10^9s^{-1}\;for\;{\chi}_M$'' peaks in the lower temperature region and $U_{eff}$ = 59.45 K, 1/$\tau_0$ = 2.2 ${\times}\;10^8\;s^{-1}$ for $\chi_M$'' peaks in the higher temperature region. The parameters of S = 10, g = 1.87, D = -0.40 $cm^{-1}$, and E = 0.00034 $cm^{-1}$ were obtained from the M/N${\mu}_B$ vs. H/T plot of complex 1.

  • The kinetic analysis of a heavily aluminized cyclotrimethylene-trinitramine(RDX) is conducted using differential scanning calorimetry(DSC), and the Friedman isoconversional method is applied to the DSC experimental data. The pre-exponential factor and activation energy are extracted as a function of the product mass fraction. The extracted kinetic scheme does not assume multiple chemical steps to describe the complex response of energetic materials; instead, a set of multiple Arrhenius factors is constructed based on the local progress of the exothermic reaction. The resulting reaction kinetic scheme is applied to two thermal decomposition tests for validating the reactive flow response of a heavily aluminized RDX. The results support applicability of the present model to practical thermal explosion systems.

  • The present study has been conducted to investigate the reaction kinetics and pyrolysis parameters for flame propagation analysis of furniture material components. TGA measurement for component materials such as MDF (medium density fiberboad) panel including coating material, synthetic leather and foam cushion are performed under maximum temperature of $600^{\circ}C$ and heating rate of $10^{\circ}C/min$. The results of TGA have shown that the peak temperature of MDF panel was $324^{\circ}C$ and the initial peak temperature of coating material decreased by $270{\sim}280^{\circ}C$. In the case of synthetic leather and foam materials, the reference temperature and reference rate depend on the type of polymer consisting the sample, the initial kinetic characteristics was classified into 2 categories of about $270^{\circ}C$ and $420^{\circ}C$ of reference temperature for the tested synthetic materials. The present study showed the pyrolysis parameters of reference temperature and reference rate proposed by Lyon to evaluate the pre-exponential factor and activation energy. The present study can contribute to improve the reliability of computational fire analysis and enhance the understanding of fire propagation phenomena based on the thermal properties study of material.
