  • The optimum design and the performance analysis software called POSEIDON for the HAWT (Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine) is developed by use of BEMT, which is the standard computational technique for prediction of power curves of wind turbines. The Prandtl's tip loss theory is adopted to consider the blade tip loss. The lift and the drag coefficient of S-809 airfoil are predicted via X-FOIL and the post stall characteristics of S-809 also are estimated by the Viterna's equations.$^{[13]}$ All the predicted aerodynamic characteristics are fairly well agreed with the wind tunnel test results. performed by Sommers in Delft university of technology. The rated power of the testing rotor is 20kW(FIL-20) at design conditions. The experimental aerodynamic parameters and the X-FOIL data are used for the power Prediction of the FIL-20 respectively The comparison results shows good agreement in power prediction.

  • Marine current energy is one of the most interesting renewable and clean energy resources that have been less exploited. Especially, Korea has worldwide outstanding tidal current energy resources and it is highly required to develop tidal in-stream energy conversion system in coastal area. The objective of study is to investigate harnessing techniques of tidal current energy and to design the a 100 kW horizontal axis tidal turbine using blade element momentum theory with Prandtl's tip loss factor for optimal design procedures. In addition, Influence of Prandtl's tip loss factor at local blade positions as a function of tip speed ratio was studied, and the analysed results showed that power coefficient of designed rotor blade using NACA 63812 was 0.49 at rated tip speed ratio.

  • A tidal current turbine is designed and analyzed numerically by using blade element momentum theory. The rated power has a limitation because the diameter of the tidal current turbine cannot exceed the depth of sea water. This study investigates a horizontal axis tidal-current turbine with a rated power of 500 kW. NACA-6 series laminar foil shape is used for basic airfoil along the blade span. The distributions of chord length and twist angle along the blade span are obtained from the hydrodynamic optimization procedure. Prandtl's tip loss correction and angle of attack correction considering the three-dimensional effect are applied for this study. The power coefficient curve shows maximum peak at the rated tip speed ratio of 6.0, and the maximum torque coefficient is developed at the tip speed ratio of 4. The drag coefficient reaches about 0.85 at the design tip speed ratio.

  • The spanwise aerodynamic loads of the wind turbine blade are investigated numerically. The blade shape such as twist and chord length along the blade span is obtained from the procedure of aerodynamically optimal design. The rated tip speed ratio and the rated wind velocity are set to 7 and 12m/s respectively. The BEM method is applied to obtain both the aerodynamic performance of the wind turbine (Fig.1) and the spanwise aerodynamic loads along the blade span including Prandtl's tip loss factor. The maximum running power coefficient is occurred around 90% radial position from hub (Fig.2). The distributed aerodynamic loads along the blade span can be used for structure analysis.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a software for the performance evaluation and blade design of a pitch-controlled HAWT using BEMT(Blade Element Momentum Theory) with Prandtl's tip loss. The HERACLES V2.0 software consist of three major part ; basic blade design, aerodynamic coefficient mapping and performance calculation including stall or pitch control option. A 1MW wind turbine blade was designed at the rated wind speed(12m/s) composing five different airfoils such as FFA-W-301, DU91-W250, DU93-W-210, NACA 63418 and NACA 63415 from hub to tip. The mechanical power predicted by BEMT at the rated wind speed is about 1.27MW. Also, CFD analysis was performed to confirm the validity of the BEMT results. The comparison results show good agreement about the error of 6.5% in rated mechanical power.
