  • In recent years, a study of power-line inspection using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) has been actively conducted. However, relevant studies have been conducting power-line inspection with an UAV operated by manual control, and they have developed just power-line detection algorithm on aerial images. To overcome limitations of existing research, we propose a drone-based power-line tracking system in this paper. The main contributions of this paper are to operate developed system under configured environment and to develop a power-line detection algorithm in real-time. Developed system is composed of the power-line detection and the image-based tracking control. To detect a power-line in real-time, a region of interest (ROI) image is extracted. Furthermore, clustering algorithm is used in order to discriminate the power-line from background. Finally, the power-line is detected by using the Hough transform, and a center position and a tilt angle are estimated by using the Kalman filter to control a drone smoothly. We design a position controller and an attitude controller for image-based tracking control, and both controllers are designed based on the proportional-derivative (PD) control method. The interaction between the position controller and the attitude controller makes the drone track the power-line. Several experiments were carried out in environments where conditions are similar to actual environments, which demonstrates the superiority of the developed system.

  • Effective monitoring and maintenance operation of towers, power lines and other defects to ensure high quality and reliability of electric power supplied to customers is becoming one of the most important tasks of today's power industry. One specific technology that has the potential to automate the entire surveillance process is unmanned aerial vehicles. In this paper, we propose a new power line extraction method using the directivity of a power line and Hough transform to detect efficiently power lines from thermal aerial images. In simulation results for several aerial images, the proposed method shows good performance in extracting power line detection.

  • The high speed line and conventional line are a single-phase AC feeding system; and power supplies of different phases meet at SS(SubStation)s or SP(Sectioning Post)s. These sections should be negotiated with the main circuit breaker in the traction vehicle switched off, whereby the length of the neutral zone prevents the pantographs shunting adjacent overhead line section. In order for electric railway vehicles to make power running there, there must be a power supply changeover section (approx. for 1km), where a changeover switch changes a power supply to the other power supply of a train running direction sequentially. For a thorough changeover switching control, the precise train position detection is necessarily required. In this paper, to realize the ground-based train position detection method, configuration scheme of train position detection equipment is suggested by using track circuit and axle counter.

  • There are about nine million power line poles and 1.3 million kilometers of the power line for electric power distribution in Korea. Maintenance of such a large number of electric power facilities requires a lot of manpower and time. Recently, various fault diagnosis techniques using artificial intelligence have been studied. Therefore, in this paper, proposes a power line deflection detect system using artificial intelligence and computer vision technology in images taken by vision system. The proposed system proceeds as follows. (i) Detection of transmission tower using object detection system (ii) Histogram equalization technique to solve the degradation in image quality problem of video data (iii) In general, since the distance between two transmission towers is long, a panoramic video stitching process is performed to grasp the entire power line (iv) Detecting deflection using computer vision technology after applying power line detection algorithm This paper explain and experiment about each process.

  • This study proposes a novel islanding detection method for distributed photovoltaic (PV) systems with multi-inverters based on a combination of the power line carrier communication and Sandia frequency shift islanding detection methods. A parameter design method is provided for the novel scheme. On the basis of the designed parameters, the effect of frequency measurement errors and grid line impedance on the islanding detection performance of PV systems is analyzed. Experimental results show that the theoretical analysis is correct and that the novel method with the designed parameters has little effect on the power quality of the inverter output current. Non-detection zones are not observed, and a high degree of reliability is achieved. Moreover, the proposed islanding detection method is suitable for distributed PV systems with multi-inverters.

  • A large scale embedded generator or a micro-grid is usually interconnected to the grid through the dedicated line. Immediately after the removal of the grid supply, it must be disconnected and remain disconnected until the normal grid supplies are restored. This paper proposes an islanding detection algorithm based on complex power at the intertie. Complex power at the intertie delivered to the grid has a value depending on power flow during normal operation. When loss of mains occurs, complex power at the intertie moves to a value depending on the parameters of the dedicated line. The performance of the proposed algorithm was investigated under various operating and fault conditions. The proposed algorithm can detect an islanding operation even if no power is exchanged prior to loss of mains and discriminate the fault condition from islanding.

  • We present a robust power transmission lines detection method based on vanishing point estimation. Vanishing point estimation can be helpful to detect power transmission lines because parallel lines converge on the vanishing point in a projected 2D image. However, it is not easy to estimate the vanishing point correctly in an image with complex background. Thus, we first propose a vanishing point estimation method on power transmission lines by using a probabilistic voting procedure based on intersection points of line segments. In images obtained by our system, power transmission lines are located in a fan-shaped area centered on this estimated vanishing point, and therefore we select the line segments that converge to the estimated vanishing point as candidate line segments for power transmission lines only in this fan-shaped area. Finally, we detect the power transmission lines from these candidate line segments. Experimental results show that the proposed method is robust to noise and efficient to detect power transmission lines.

  • Fault detection technique for photovoltaic power systems is significant to dramatically reduce economic damage in industrial fields. This paper presents a novel fault detection approach using Fourier neural networks and stochastic decision making strategy for photovoltaic systems. We achieve neural modeling to represent its nonlinear dynamic behaviors through a gradient descent based learning algorithm. Next, a general likelihood ratio test (GLRT) is derived for constructing a decision malling mechanism in stochastic fault detection. A testbed of photovoltaic power systems is established to conduct real-time experiments in which the DC power line communication (DPLC) technique is employed to transfer data sets measured from the photovoltaic panels to PC systems. We demonstrate our proposed fault detection methodology is reliable and practicable over this real-time experiment.

  • It is known that power line communication systems have more noise than general wired communication systems due to the high voltage that flows in power line cables, and the noise causes a serious performance degradation. In order to mitigate performance degradation due to such noise, this paper proposes an artificial intelligence algorithm based on polynomial regression, which detects signals in the impulse noise environment in the power line communication system. The polynomial regression method is used to predict the original transmitted signal from the impulse noise signal. Simulation results show that the signal detection performance in the impulse noise environment of the power line communication is improved through the artificial intelligence algorithm proposed in this paper.

  • Correct and fast detection of a micro-grid (MG) islanding is essential to the MG since operation, control and protection of the MG depend on an operating mode i.e., an interconnected mode or an islanding mode. When islanding occurs, the frequency of the point of common coupling (PCC) is not the nominal frequency during the transient state owing to the frequency rise or drop of generators in the MG. Thus, the active and reactive power calculated by the frequency domain based method such as Fourier Transform might contain some errors. This paper proposes an islanding detection algorithm for the MG based on the instantaneous active and reactive powers delivered to the dedicated line in the time domain. During the islanding mode, the instantaneous active and reactive powers delivered to the dedicated line are constants, which depend on the voltage of the PCC and the impedance of the dedicated line. In this paper, the instantaneous active and reactive powers are calculated in the time domain and used to detect islanding. The performance of the proposed algorithm is verified under various scenarios including islanding conditions, fault conditions and load variation using the PSCAD/EMTDC simulator. The results indicate that the algorithm successfully detects islanding for the MG.
