  • Using the soil bin systems, this study was carried out to investigate the tilling load characteristic for the three kinds of Japanese rotary blade and the possibility of common use for power tiller and tractor rotary. The results obtained from the study are summarized as follows : 1. At all tested soils. the average and maximum tilling torque of all tested blades increased as the tillage pitch did. 2. The torque requirements of newly designed and produced blade was less than that of blade which has been used on power tiller and tractor rotary. 3. The maximum tilling torque of new ONE were decreased 7%, 10~11%, 27% in comparing with another blades at clay loam, loam and sandy loam, respectively. 4. According to observation of the extent of soil adhesion on blade and the contact aspect of blade, new ONE is the most excellent of all tested rotary blades and till smoothly not to compress the untilled soil. From the results of this study. the newly developed blade(new ONE) proved to be good tilling load performance and had a conclusion that it is possible to use it on power tiller and tractor rotary in common.

Mechanical harvest efficiency to rhizomes of Rehmannia glutinosa Libosch. (지황의 기계수확 효율비교)

  • This study was carried out to determine an effective mechanical harvester for rhizomes of Rehmannia glutinosa Libosch. Labor-saving efficiency showed 69∼76% by using tillage operations with power tiller, digger attached to power tiller, and digger attached to tractor compared with manual harvest. Loss percentage of rhizomes by mechanical harvesters was 3.1∼ 9.3% higher, and fresh rhizome yield was 2∼6% lower than that by manual harvest, respectively. Although it showed higher loss percentage of rhizomes and lower fresh rhizome yield compared with manual harvest, mechanical harvest using digger attached to power tiller or digger attached to tractor was effective in labor-saving for rhizomes of Rehmannia glutinosa Libosch.

  • This study was conducted to obtain basic data which affected engine performance of the power tiller being widely used in the rural area. Among the various factors being influenced engine performance, factors of radiator, of capacity of cooling water, and of efficiency of cooling fan were considered as the major factors in this study. Because diesel engine being used to power tiller are scarce of cooling water, it is over-heated in time of rated power. Therefore, a experiment was performed to determine the capacity of cooling water of engine with circuit system of cooling water adhered.

  • Power tiller is a major unit of agricultural machinery being used on farms in Korea. About 180.000 units are introduced by 1977 and the demand for power tiller is continuously increasing as the farm mechanization progress. Major farming operations done by power tiller are the tillage, pumping, spraying, threshing, and hauling by exchanging the corresponding implements. In addition to their use on a relatively mild slope ground at present, it is also expected that many of power tillers could be operated on much inclined land to be developed by upland enlargement programmed. Therefore, research should be undertaken to solve many problems related to an effective untilization of power tillers on slope ground. The major objective of this study was to find out the travelling and tractive characteristics of power tillers being operated on general slope ground.In order to find out the critical travelling velocity and stability limit of slope ground for the side sliding and the dynamic side overturn of the tiller and tiller-trailer system, the mathematical model was developed based on a simplified physical model. The results analyzed through the model may be summarized as follows; (1) In case of no collision with an obstacle on ground, the equation of the dynamic side overturn developed was: $$\sum_n^{i=1}W_ia_s(cos\alpha cos\phi-{\frac {C_1V^2sin\phi}{gRcos\beta})-I_{AB}\frac {v^2}{Rr}}=0$$ In case of collision with an obstacle on ground, the equation was: $$\sum_n^{i=1}W_ia_s\{cos\alpha(1-sin\phi_1)-{\frac {C_1V^2sin\phi}{gRcos\beta}\}-\frac {1}{2}I_{TP} \( {\frac {2kV_2} {d_1+d_2}\)-I_{AB}{\frac{V^2}{Rr}} \( \frac {\pi}{2}-\frac {\pi}{180}\phi_2 \} = 0 $$ (2) As the angle of steering direction was increased, the critical travelling veloc\ulcornerities of side sliding and dynamic side overturn were decreased. (3) The critical travelling velocity was influenced by both the side slope angle .and the direct angle. In case of no collision with an obstacle, the critical velocity $V_c$ was 2.76-4.83m/sec at $\alpha=0^\circ$, $\beta=20^\circ$ ; and in case of collision with an obstacle, the critical velocity $V_{cc}$ was 1.39-1.5m/sec at $\alpha=0^\circ$, $\beta=20^\circ$ (4) In case of no collision with an obstacle, the dynamic side overturn was stimu\ulcornerlated by the carrying load but in case of collision with an obstacle, the danger of the dynamic side overturn was decreased by the carrying load. (5) When the system travels downward with the first set of high speed the limit {)f slope angle of side sliding was $\beta=5^\circ-10^\circ$ and when travels upward with the first set of high speed, the limit of angle of side sliding was $\beta=10^\circ-17.4^\circ$ (6) In case of running downward with the first set of high speed and collision with an obstacle, the limit of slope angle of the dynamic side overturn was = $12^\circ-17^\circ$ and in case of running upward with the first set of high speed and collision <>f upper wheels with an obstacle, the limit of slope angle of dynamic side overturn collision of upper wheels against an obstacle was $\beta=22^\circ-33^\circ$ at $\alpha=0^\circ -17.4^\circ$, respectively. (7) In case of running up and downward with the first set of high speed and no collision with an obstacle, the limit of slope angle of dynamic side overturn was $\beta=30^\circ-35^\circ$ (8) When the power tiller without implement attached travels up and down on the general slope ground with first set of high speed, the limit of slope angle of dynamic side overturn was $\beta=32^\circ-39^\circ$ in case of no collision with an obstacle, and $\beta=11^\circ-22^\circ$ in case of collision with an obstacle, respectively.

Development of a 2-row Type Band Furrow Tiller for a Walking Cultivator (보행형 관리기 부착형 2조식 부분 중경제초기의 개발)

  • This study was conducted to develop a 2 row type band furrow tiller for a walking cultivator. The tillage and weeding operations in the furrow of dry fields has been done manually or chemical herbicide has been applied. The application of herbicide induces soil pollution and manual operation requires heavy labor. This 2-row type implement was developed to substitute this manual operation and to minimize soil pollution. The developed implement was composed of power transmitting device, tilling device, frame and tail wheel. The max. plowing width and depth were 300mm and 180mm, respectively. The revolutions of the hexagonal shaft and the tillage shaft were $227{\sim}376rpm$ and $355{\sim}590rpm$, respectively. The adequate working speed was $0.50{\sim}0.83m/s$ and the field capacity was $0.17{\sim}0.28hr/10a$.

A Study on the Design of Leveller for Power Tiller (동력 경운기용 레벨러 제작에 관한 연구)

  • This study was conducted to develop the leveller suitable for power tiller which has been widely used in Korea. Field test was carried out to determine its performance in accordance with the tilt angles of blede, forward velocities , and the length of blade . The results are follows ; 1. Earth moving capacity of the standard leveller was found to be 90~95kg of soil per one swath while working at the 2nd ~4th gears of forward speed. 2. Work performance of model leveller was 2 , 3, 4 times higher than manual operation in distributing additional soil of thickness 6mm , 12 mm and 24 mm on paddyland, respectively. 3. Levelling performance of model leveller on the inclined fields was 7 ~9 times higher than manual operation.

Development of Vibration Absorption Device for the Transportation-Trailer System(II) - Connecting Hitch for Power Tiller-Trailer - (수송 트레일러의 충격흡수장치 개발(II) - 동력경운기 연결 히치 -)

  • The improved hitch device, which connecting the trailer to power tiller, was developed. This device, composed with spring and rubber, could reduce the vibration and shock levels during driven on off-road. The vertical vibration accelerations for the improved hitch device were measured at 6 positions, i.e. engine, hitch, seat, and three points in trailer (front, middle, and rear) for not driving but at low engine speed of 500 rpm, and compared with the existing hitch device. The results of this study could be summarized as follows; The average vibration acceleration up to 120 Hz was $0.4m/s^2$ at engine part, but it was 0.08 and $0.05m/s^2$ at trailer for existing and improved hitch device, respectively. About $38\%$ of average acceleration level could be absorbed for the improved hitch device compared with existing hitch device. The average vibration acceleration up to 40 Hz was reduced to 0.12 and $0.06m/s^2$ at trailer for existing and improved hitch device respectively, showing the reduction effect of $50\%$. The maximum acceleration occurred at up to 20 Hz of low frequency was much higher than total acceleration occurred at up to 120 Hz, which means that much loss or damage could be occurred during transporting of agricultural products on off-road. The portions of average acceleration occurred at up to 20 Hz of low frequency were $27\%\;and\;21\%$ for the existing and improved hitch device, respectively.

Tillage Characteristics of the Single-Edged Rotary Blade (단면형 로터리경운날의 경운 특성)

  • The purpose of this study is to developed high-efficient rotary tillage system for a power tiller by improving the rotary blade. A kind of the rotary blade with single-edged blade(DS) was developed that requires lower tillage energy than conventional double-edged blade(CD) on the design theory for Japanese rotary blade. In order to find out the tillage characteristics between the single-edged blade and the double-edged blade for power tiller, experiments were performed in soil-bins which were filled up clay loam, loam and sandy loam, and then analyzed the effects of the factors such as soil texture, travelling speed, rotational speed, and tillage depth to each of the blades. And field tests were carried out to compare tillage performances of the two blades using rotary cultivator driven by conventional power tiller. The results of this study were summarized as follows; 1) On the soil bin experiment, it was found that tillage torque of the single-edged blade was less than the ones of the double-edged blade. The decreasing ratios of maximum tillage torque of the single-edged blade to the ones of the double-edged blade were 1 to 8% at clay loam, 5 to 20% at loam and 9 to 31% at sandy loam, respectively. 2) By the field tests, that the tillage performances with the single-edged blade compared with the double-edged blade was improved about 19% in field capacity, about 34% in fuel consumption, and 12.5% in soil breaking ratio. Furthermore, the fluctuation of engine speed, the variation of exhaust gas temperature, and the amount of soil clogging on the blade and straw wound on the rotary shaft showed lower values with the developed blade than the conventional blade. So, it may be concluded that tillage performance by the developed single-edged blade was improved compared with the one by the conventional double-edged blade.
