  • The large value of the snubber capacitor is needed to protect the devices in high voltage converters using series connected power semiconductors. But that results in more losses and longer commutation time. So, new technique of series connection is required, which can minimize the value of snubber capacitor and also promote the reliability of high voltage converters. We study on the switching characteristics of series connected power semiconductors and then propose a novel switching algorithm for series-connection which is able to implement not only the dynamic voltage balancing in spite of the differerce of switching characteristics, but the minimization of the value of snubber capacitor, through the change of the value of snubber capacitor by Miller effect. Finally, we illustrate the validity of this synchronization by computer simulation and experimental results.

  • This paper shows the series power device in the massive roof-top PVs and domestic loads. D-UPFC as the series power device controls the distribution voltage during voltage rise (or fall) condition. D-UPFC consists of the bi-directional ac-ac converter and the transformer. In order to verify the D-UPFC voltage control, the distribution model is used in the case study. D-UPFC enables the voltage control in the distribution voltage range. Dynamic voltage control from voltage rise and voltage fall conditions is performed. Scaled-down experimental test of the D-UPFC is verified the voltage control and it is well performed without high voltage spikes in the inductive load.

  • In this paper, a 3phase-3wire series active power filter compensating current harmonics and unbalanced source voltages is presented. The system is composed of series active power filter and shunt passive filters that are tuned 5th and 7th harmonics. In this system, series active power filter improves harmonic compensation characteristics of the shunt passive filters and compensates the unbalanced source voltages. In the proposed algorithm, compensation voltage for harmonic reduction is calculated by a performance function, and compensation voltage for the unbalanced source voltage is calculated in based on the synchronous reference frame. Some results obtained from the experimental model using the proposed method are presented to demonstrate and confirm its validity.

  • This paper presents and analyses protection schemes for a series active compensator, which consists of a Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC) or a hybrid active power filter. The proposed series active compensator operates as a high impedance "k(D)" for the fundamental components of the power frequency during over current conditions in the distribution system. Two control strategies are proposed in this paper. The first strategy detects the fundamental source current using the p-q theory. The second strategy detects the fundamental component of the load current in the Synchronous Reference Frame (SRF). When over currents occur in the power distribution system momentarily, the proposed schemes protect the series active compensator without the need for additional protection circuits, and achieves excellent transient response. The validity of the proposed protection schemes is investigated through simulation and compared with experimental results using a hybrid active power filter systems.

  • Most of the industrial loads includes the non-linear load as well as the linear load because there are many kinds of power conversion equipments at the input stage of the load in distribution network. The non-linear load causes the distortion of voltage waveform at PCC because the non-linear load generates the harmonic current. As a result, various voltage harmonics are existed at PCC depending on the current harmonics from the non-linear load. And, a series reactor is generally connected to the power capacitor in series to attenuate the distortion of voltage waveform and to reduce an inrush current of power capacitor. Also, harmonic current of power capacitor is highly dependent on the series reactor because it is operated with the power capacitor as a passive filter against nonlinear loads. Then, these capacitors might be damaged by the excessive voltage and current harmonic components. In this paper, we presented how to select the capacitor and series reactor to meet the requirement of the voltage distortion at PCC and analyzed the voltage, current and capacity rating of the power capacitor by the computer simulation to ensure the safe operation of power capacitor when the voltage harmonics at PCC are existed. Also, the analysis data were compared with the experimental measurements for the verification.

  • In this paper, a new carrier complex power series which represents nonlinear transfer function of high power amplifier is derived. Using this transfer function, the nonlinear transfer function of predistortive circuit for linearizing the distortion effect of a HPA(High Power Amplifier) is derived and fabricated. A measured gain and $P_{1dB}$ of the fabricated HPA in IMT-2000 basestation transmitting band are 34.06 dB and 35.4 dBm. The predistortive circuit using inverse carrier complex power series is fabricated and operated with HPA. The predistortive HPA improves C/I(Carrier to Intermodulation) ratio of HPA by 17.01 dB(@Pout=25.43 dBm/tone) with 2-tone at 2.1375 GHz and 2.1425 GHz.

  • The unified power quality conditioner (UPQC) is an effective custom power device that is used at the point of common coupling to protect loads from voltage and current-related PQ issues. Currently, most researchers have studied series unit and parallel unit models and an idealized transformer model. However, the interactions of the series and parallel converters in AC-link are difficult to analyze. This study utilizes an equivalent transformer model to accomplish an electric connection of series and parallel converters in the AC-link and to establishes a precise unified mathematical model of the UPQC. The strong coupling interactions of series and parallel units are analyzed, and they show a remarkable dependence on the excitation impedance of transformers. Afterward, a feed-forward decoupling method based on a unified model that contains the uncertainty components of the load impedance is applied. Thus, this study presents an adaptive method to estimate load impedance. Furthermore, simulation and experimental results verify the accuracy of the proposed modeling and decoupling algorithm.

  • A protection scheme for hybrid active power filters, which is combined shunt passive filter and small rated series active filter, is presented and analyzed in this paper. The proposed series active power filter operated as a high impedance 'k($\Omega$)' to the fundamental component when over current occurs in the power distribution system, and three control strategies are proposed in this paper. The first is the method by detecting the fundamental source current through the p-q theory, the second is the method by detecting the fundamental component of load current in Synchronous Reference Frame (SRF) and the third is the method by detecting the input voltage. When the over current occurs in the power distribution system, the proposed scheme protects the series active power filter without additional protection circuits. The validity of proposed protection scheme is investigated through experimental result for the prototype hybrid active power filter system.

  • This paper presents a unified control scheme for series-type active power filters combined with shunt passive filters for the source voltage unbalance compensation and the power factor correction simultaneously. The power factor correction is achieved by controlling the amplitude of reactive power current in a series filter as zero in a synchronously rotating reference frame. The proposed algorithm successfully compensates the source voltage unbalance and the power factor. The validity of the proposed scheme has been verified by simulation for a 3-kVA hybrid active power filter system.

  • In this paper, the bifurcation criteria for inductive power transfer (IPT) systems is suggested considering the inductive power pad losses. The bifurcation criteria for series-series (SS) and series-parallel (SP) topologies are derived in terms of the main parameters of the IPT system. For deriving precise criteria, power pad resistance is obtained by copper loss calculation and core loss analysis. Utilizing the suggested criteria, possibility of bifurcation occurrence can be predicted in the design process. In order to verify the proposed criteria, 50 W IPT laboratory prototype is fabricated and the feasibilities of the switching frequency and AC load resistance shift to escape from bifurcation are identified.
