Prediction of the Reflood Phenomena with modifications in RELAP5/MOD3.1

  • Reflood model in RELAP5/MOD3.1 are modified to improve the unrealistic prediction results of the model. In the new method, the modified Zuber pool boiling critical heat flux (CHF) correlation is adopted. The reflood drop size is characterized by the use of We=1.5 and the minimum drop size of 0.0007 m for $p^{*}\;{\leq}\;0.025$. To describe the wall to vapor heat transfer at low pressure and low flow condition, the Webb-Chen correlation is utilized . The suggested method has been verified through the simulations of the Lehigh University rod bundle reflood tests. Through sensitivity study it is shown that the effect of drag coefficients is dominant in the reflood model. It is proved that the present modifications result in much more improved quench behavior and accurate wan and vapor temperature predictions.

  • This paper proposes the algorithm of torque distribution in the electric wheel-chair using 2D joystick for drive safety. For the accurate driving performance, the specific and precise torque distribution is required in both wheels depending on signals of X-Y axis that is generated from 2D joystick. The signals of X-Y axis from joystick are transformed into the propulsion force and the torque reference. And the torque reference can be generated through the dynamic model of wheel-chair. The optimal dynamic characteristics of the electric powered wheelchair can be obtained, by adjusting the sensitivity coefficients of propulsion force and torque reference, In addition, the system takes smooth and stable control characteristics due to continuous torque output at all directions of joystick. The several simulations verify the usefulness of the proposed algorithm about torque distribution.

Geometry and load effects on transient response of a VFGM annular plate: An analytical approach

  • In this article, the effect of different geometrical, materials and load parameters on the transient response of axisymmetric viscoelastic functionally graded annular plates with different boundary conditions are studied. The behavior of the plate is assumed the elastic in bulk and viscoelastic in shear with the standard linear solid model. Also, the graded properties vary through the thickness according to a power law function. Three types of mostly applied transient loading, i.e., step, impulse, and harmonic with different load distribution respect to radius coordinate are examined. The motion equations and the corresponding boundary conditions are extracted by applying the first order shear deformation theory which are three coupled partial differential equations with variable coefficients. The resulting motion equations are solved analytically using the perturbation technique and the generalized Fourier series. The sensitivity of the response to the graded indexes, different transverse loads, aspect ratios, boundary conditions and the material properties are investigated too. The results are compared with the finite element analysis.

레이다 신호의 클래스 분리도 측정을 위한 연구 (Study on Class Separability Measure for Radar Signals)

  • 본 논문에서는 레이다 신호를 위한 새로운 클래스간 분리도 측정 방법을 제시한다. 제안된 방법에서는 표적과 레이다 간의 상대적 각도 차이의 따른 레이다 신호의 민감도를 감소시키기 위해 RCS(radar cross section)의 경우 두 신호의 상관계수(correlation coefficient)를 구하고, 1차원 신호의 경우(i.e., high resolution range profile(HRRP)) 선형이동을 하며 상관계수를 구한다. 2차원 레이다 신호(i.e., inverse synthetic aperture radar(ISAR))의 경우 두 레이다 신호를 회전하면서 상관계수를 계산한다. 그런 다음, 두 레이다 신호가 가장 잘 배열되었을 경우의 최대 상관계수를 구하고, 이를 이용해 새로운 형태의 상관 기반 분리 행렬을 구성한다. 상관 기반 분리 행렬의 누적분포함수를 구하여 상위 확률에 응답하는 값을 구하였고, 그 값은 레이다 신호의 분리 능력을 정확하게 나타낸다. 제안한 방법을 이용한 실험 결과, 표적 분리 능력을 정확하게 추정할 수 있었다.

  • 비 정렬된 입출력단자를 갖는 능동 방향성 결합기에서 최대 전력결합 특성을 얻기 위한 새로운 설계조건을 제안하였다. 제안한 설계방법의 타당성 및 정확성을 분석하기 위하여 불연속 입출력 경계면에서 발생하는 반사감도를 고려한 새로운 결합효율을 정의하였다. 분석 결과, 지금까지 방향성 결합기를 설계하기 위하여 사용되어 왔던 위상정합조건과 최소간격조건들은 불연속 특성과 이득을 갖는 능동 방향성 결합기의 설계조건에 적합하지 않으며, 새로운 전력 등가분배조건이 필요함을 알 수 있었다.

  • The creep crack growth rate (da/dt) of the Cr-Mo steels tested by pre-crack and the voltage (or resistance) variables were related into fracture parameter (Ct), crack growth coefficient (H), and an exponent (q) in the parts of Base, weld and HAZ. The fracture parameter (Ct) has various variables relating to the specimen and crack shape, applied stress, and creep strain curve. The H and q was inferred by OLS regression (ordinary least square method), and the H values were solved in statistics and probability assessment, which were attained fromPDF's distributions (probability density function). The HAZ part has the highest value of q by OLS regression and the widest distribution of H by PDF of WEIBULL, which means that the crack sensitivity of HAZ should be cautioned against the creep crack growth and failure.

Capacity assessment of existing corroded overhead power line structures subjected to synoptic winds

  • The physical infrastructure of the power systems, including the high-voltage transmission towers and lines as well as the poles and wires for power distribution at a lower voltage level, is critical for the resilience of the community since the failures or nonfunctioning of these structures could introduce large area power outages under the extreme weather events. In the current engineering practices, single circuit lattice steel towers linked by transmission lines are widely used to form power transmission systems. After years of service and continues interactions with natural and built environment, progressive damages accumulate at various structural details and could gradually change the structural performance. This study is to evaluate the typical existing transmission tower-line system subjected to synoptic winds (atmospheric boundary layer winds). Effects from the possible corrosion penetration on the structural members of the transmission towers and the aerodynamic damping force on the conductors are evaluated. However, corrosion in connections is not included. Meanwhile, corrosion on the structural members is assumed to be evenly distributed. Wind loads are calculated based on the codes used for synoptic winds and the wind tunnel experiments were carried out to obtain the drag coefficients for different panels of the transmission towers as well as for the transmission lines. Sensitivity analysis is carried out based upon the incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) to evaluate the structural capacity of the transmission tower-line system for different corrosion and loading conditions. Meanwhile, extreme value analysis is also performed to further estimate the short-term extreme response of the transmission tower-line system.

Xenon in molten salt reactors: The effects of solubility, circulating particulate, ionization, and the sensitivity of the circulating void fraction

  • Xenon behaves differently in molten salt reactors (MSRs) compared to solid fuel reactors. This behavior needs exploring due to the large reactivity effect of the 135Xe isotope, given the current interest in MSR power plant development for commercial deployment. This paper focuses on select topics in xenon transport, reviews relevant past works, and proposes specific research questions to advance the state of the art in each of the focus areas. Specifically, the paper discusses the issue of xenon solubility in MSRs, the behavior of particulates circulating in MSR fuel salt and its influence on the xenon transport, the possibility of ionization of xenon atoms which changes its effective size and thus affects its mass transport, and finally the issue of circulating void fraction and how it is measured. This work presents specific recommendations for MSR designers to research the limits of Henry's law validity, circulating particulate scrubbers, validity of mass transport coefficients in high radiation fields, and the effects of pump speed on circulating void fraction.

3D-QSAR Studies of 2-Arylbenzoxazoles as Novel Cholesteryl Ester Transfer Protein Inhibitors

  • The 3D-QSAR study of 2-arylbenzoxazoles as novel cholesteryl ester transfer protein inhibitors was performed by comparative molecular field analysis (CoMFA), CoMFA region focusing (CoMFA-RF) for optimizing the region for the final PLS analysis, and comparative molecular similarity indices analysis (CoMSIA) methods to determine the factors required for the activity of these compounds. The best orientation was searched by all-orientation search strategy using AOS, to minimize the effect of the initial orientation of the structures. The predictive ability of CoMFARF and CoMSIA were determined using a test set of twelve compounds giving predictive correlation coefficients of 0.886, and 0.754 respectively indicating good predictive power. Further, the robustness and sensitivity to chance correlation of the models were verified by bootstrapping and progressive scrambling analyses respectively. Based upon the information derived from CoMFA(RF) and CoMSIA, identified some key features that may be used to design new inhibitors for cholesteryl ester transfer protein.

IMPROVEMENT OF RIDE AND HANDLING CHARACTERISTICS USING MULTI-OBJECTIVE OPTIMIZATION TECHNIQUES

  • In order to reduce the time and costs of improving the performance of vehicle suspensions, the techniques for optimizing damping and air spring characteristic were proposed. A full vehicle model for a bus is constructed with a car body, front and rear suspension linkages, air springs, dampers, tires, and a steering system. An air spring and a damper are modeled with nonlinear characteristics using experimental data and a curve fitting technique. The objective function for ride quality is WRMS (Weighted RMS) of the power spectral density of the vertical acceleration at the driver's seat, middle seat and rear seat. The objective function for handling performance is the RMS (Root Mean Squares) of the roll angle, roll rate, yaw rate, and lateral acceleration at the center of gravity of a body during a lane change. The design variables are determined by damping coefficients, damping exponents and curve fitting parameters of air spring characteristic curves. The Taguchi method is used in order to investigate sensitivity of design variables. Since ride and handling performances are mutually conflicting characteristics, the validity of the developed optimum design procedure is demonstrated by comparing the trends of ride and handling performance indices with respect to the ratio of weighting factors. The global criterion method is proposed to obtain the solution of multi-objective optimization problem.
