  • In case of using rapid vacuum-freeze drying for high quality dry flower of flowering plant, the morphological and physiological characteristics of dry rose showed as the following. The dry ratio of about 82% presented after 1 day in case of using rapid vacuum-freeze drying and it was reached that the optimum storage water content of general dry products was 18%. The dry ratio of about 89% presented after 4 days. This result indicates very short dry time comparing with natural dry time of 12 days. Also, the morphological characteristics of flowering plant in case of vacuum-freeze drying showed similar shape with real flower. The contraction decreased about 9% comparing with real flower under dry time of 72 hours. But the contraction in case of natural dry decreased 36% and showed noticeable difference. The brightness which affects physiological characteristics of dry flowering plant showed lower values according to the dry process and chromaticity was thick. After 4 days, natural dry was thick with about 2 times comparing with vacuum-freeze drying. In case of vacuum-freeze drying, the quantity of anthocyanin and chlorophyl which affect discoloration and bleaching of dry flowering plant showed the clear difference comparing with natural dry method due to the sublimation by vacuum after rapid freeze with short initial time.

  • The thermochemical recycling of waste tires by pyrolysis is studied to recover the value added three by-products; a pyrolytic carbon black, a pyrolytic oil, and a non-condensable gas. The exhausted energy from pyrolysis of waste tires is converted for electricity power and process steam in cogeneration system. The characteristics of the pyrolysis recovered by-products as alternative energy resource are investigated with the design of a demonstration and a commercialization plant including cogeneration system, as called integrated pyrolysis cogeneration system.

  • Radionuclide deposited on the surface of several internal and external systems in a nuclear power plant is created by the activation of corrosion products from nuclear reactor structural materials and fission products. Especially, the constant contact between water and the surface corrodes the inside where primary system makes coolants and corrosion products mixed. Also, these are circulated along the systems. For comparing models, CRUDTRAN, DISER, MIGA-RT and CPAIR codes are analyzed to predict the quantity of radionuclide and corrosion product of primary reactor that are used at the stage of designing. The corrosion products behavior of domestic PWR primary system was predicted by using CRUDTRAN. This study aims to increase the reliability of corrosion product evaluation model by comparing the actual values and calculated values with the data of a Westing House-type Nuclear Power Plant.

  • Radionuclides were deposited at forest areas in eastern parts of Japan following the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant incident in March 2011. Ectomycorrhizal (EM) fungi have important effects on radiocaesium dynamics in forest ecosystems. We examined the effect of colonization by the EM fungus Astraeus hygrometricus on the uptake of cesium (Cs) and potassium (K) by Pinus densiflora seedlings. Pine seedlings exhibited enhanced growth after the EM formation due to the colonization by A. hygrometricus. Additionally, the shoot Cs concentration increased after the EM formation when Cs was not added to the medium. This suggests that A. hygrometricus might be able to solubilize Cs fixed to soil particles. Moreover, the shoot K concentration increased significantly after the EM formation when Cs was added. However, there were no significant differences in the root K concentration between EM and non-EM seedlings. These results suggest that different mechanisms control the transfer of Cs and K from the root to the shoot of pine seedlings.

  • In a pressurized water reactor, radioactive corrosion products (CRUD) in primary coolant system are one of the major sources for the occupational radiation exposure of the personnel in a nuclear power plant. Through the recent trend of long term fuel cycle in a nuclear power plant, radioactive corrosion products deposited in reactor core for a long time are also the cause of Axial Offset Anomaly (AOA) having an effect on reactor power by the hideout of boron. CRUD consist primarily of magnetite, nickel ferrite, cobalt ferrite, and so on. They have the characteristic of strong magnetism. Therefore it is peformed the conceptual design to develop the filter which removes the CRUD by magnetic field that is generated by an arrangement of permanent and electric magnets. Contrary to the conventional filter, the proposed filter does not interrupt the fluid flow, so there is little pressure drop and it can be used continuously. It is expected to be applied as one of the technologies for removal of the CRUD.

  • Recently, there has been a growing interest in the development of non-sintered binder to reduce CO2 emissions from the cement clinker manufacturing process and a number of studies have been conducted on fly ashes as an industrial by-product. However, in order to utilize fly ashes as a non-sintered binder, it is necessary to solve problems such as safety issues and economical efficiency due to use of an alkali activator. This study evaluates the material properties and compressive strength characteristics of three types of circulating fluidized bed boiler ashes. As a result, it was confirmed that the characteristics of each binder vary depending on the location of the power plant and the types of raw materials. In addition, it has been confirmed that the fluidized bed boiler ash shows a high compressive strength and can be used sufficiently as an non-sintered binder.

  • A study on the synthesis of zeolite from bituminous coal ESP fly ash as a raw material, which was emitted from the power plant, was carried out to reduce environmental problems and reuse of the industrial wastes. Bituminous coal fly ash was used as the source of silica and alumina. Zeolite was synthesized by hydrothermal reaction in aqueous NaOH solution with sodium aluminate as additive. The objective of this study is to elucidate the effect of several experimental variables on the synthesis of zeolite. The effects of preroasting temperature, mixing speed, leaching alkalinity, and molar ratio of Na$_{2}$O/SiO$_{2}$ and SiO$_{2}$/Al$_{2}$O of the products were investigated. The synthesized zeolite was proved to be NaA, which is known as 4A type, by comparing with SEM images, and X-ray diffraction analysis. And also we know that the transformation of zeolite A take places into other types of zeolites, i.e. Hydroxysodalite, zeolite P, with the variation of leaching alkalinity.

  • The present report concerns measurement of environmental radioactivity in the Ko-ri nuclear power plant site area. Gross beta measurements have been performed on soil, water, pine needle, and fallout samples collected during the period of December 1970-November 1972. Radioactivities of Strontium-90 and Cesium-137 have been measured by radiochemical analyses on samples of vegetables and marine products collected in 1972. Apparent seasonal variations and overall decrease by the year was also observed from the results of soil, pine needle, and fallout sample measurements respectively.
