  • Background: Malawi's 2018 National Energy Policy includes nuclear power as an energy option with an operational 100 MW targeted for 2035. Materials and Methods: This paper challenges the scope of the policy on nuclear power by reviewing its implementation strategy and comparing it to: the strategy established for coal in the same policy; some experiences from other countries; and documents by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) relating to establishing a national position on nuclear power and infrastructural requirements for a nuclear power program. Results and Discussion: It is found that the pro-nuclear position is uninformed, and targets are unrealistic owing to a lack of understanding of nature of nuclear power including the requirements for safety, security and safeguards, and nuclear infrastructure. It is apparent that neither consultation nor a proper analysis were comprehensively conducted for nuclear. Though the national energy policy suggests a national position for nuclear energy, the content does not demonstrate that the position was arrived at knowledgeably. Conclusion: Thus, nuclear power may presently be viewed as a potential energy option that is yet to be seriously considered. It is important to build an appropriate level of literacy on nuclear science and technology for policy makers, key stakeholders, and the public to be better positioned for strategizing on nuclear power.

  • Geothermal energy is used in various types, such as power generation, direct use, and geothermal heat pumps. Geothermal energy with high temperature have been used for power generation for more than a century. The purpose of the study is to investigate flow and electricity power characteristics of hydraulic turbine for power generation of geothermal heat pump type with closed-system. The differences between the four types of hydraulic turbine, are different from the blade shape, volume, angle and etc. In case of prototype(1), pressure at blade was reduced to 2.1 bar, the kinetic energy of blade increased by increasing flow velocity(4.1 m/s). The increase of flow velocity at the blade edge markedly appeared, to increase the kinetic energy of the rotating shaft. In case that gateway in hydraulic turbine was installed, operating torque and RPM(1,080) of the rotating shaft increased respectively. Although rotational speed of prototype(2) compared to prototype(1) was reduced, the power generation capacity was greater about 3.4 times to 97 W. The most power of 255W was generated from prototype (4).

  • The Solar energy is either used as a solar thermal energy or converted to electrical power through power conversion system. The latter method is defined as a solar cell changing the solar energy into the direct electric energy or power conversion that convert the dc power into ac power. For the solar cell to be a practical alternative energy, the study should be focused not only on the solar cell ,but also the power conversion system for common power source. In this study, we get the suitable power to common load ,using Ag Grid DSC(Dye-sensitized solar cell). Our purpose is to achieve the common solar cell power generation system ,using converter and PWM(Pulse width modulation) inverter system controled by DSP.

  • Electric vehicles (EV) demands for greater acceleration, performance and vehicle range in pure electric vehicles plus mandated requirements to further reduce emissions in hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) increase the appeal for combined on-board energy storage systems and generators. And the power electronics plays an important role in providing an interface between fuel cells (FC) and loads. This paper deals with a multiple input DC-DC power converter devoted to combine the power flowing of multi-source on energy systems. The multi-source is composed of (i) FC system as a prime power demands, (ii) super capacitor banks as energy storage devices for high and intense power demands, (iii) superconducting magnetic energy storage system (SMES), (iv) multiple input DC-DC power converter and (v) a three phase inverter-fed permanent magnet synchronous motor as a drive. In this system, It is used super capacitor banks and superconducting magnetic energy replaces from the battery system. The modeling and transient performance simulation is effective for reducing transient influence caused by sudden charge of effective load. The main purpose of power electronic converters is to convert the DC power output from the fuel cell and other to a suitable AC voltage, which can be connected to electric loads directly (PMSM). The fuel cell and other output is connected to the DC-DC converter, which regulates the DC link voltage.

  • In 2013, a total capacity of 591.3 MW of installed wind power generation was achieved in Korea, with a total of 1,139 MWh of wind energy generated that year. More wind power plants will be installed in the coming years, and it is important to develop methods to reduce the output variability of these resources so as to provide stable power to the power grid of Korea. In this regard, this paper proposes the use of energy storage system (ESS) as a means to stabilize the output variability of wind power plants. Presented in this paper is a method that uses Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) to determine the ESS capacity needed to provide a stable power output for ancillary services such as frequency regulation, economic dispatch, and emergency reserves. In the first step of the proposed method, four regions (namely, Samdal, Yeongdeok, Yeongyang, and Gangwon) in Korea that had the most wind power generation capacity were selected for analysis. In the second step, the individual and aggregated wind power outputs of the selected regions in 2013 were obtained This information was then used in the third step, where DFT analysis of the power outputs was used to drive the magnitudes of the output variation. And finally, the ESS capacity requirements needed to provide different ancillary services were determined based on the magnitudes of the output variation.

  • The Jeju-Korea power system is a small-sized network with a system demand ranging from a autumn minimum of 350MW to a summer peak of 716MW. Because Jeju island is well exposed to north-east winds with high speed, applications to connect to Jeju power system are flooded. Considering physical/environmental constraints, Jeju Self-governing Province has also target for the wind power capacity of 1,350MW by 2020. It amounts to two or three times of Jeju average-demand power and wind power limit capacity announced by Korea Power Exchange (KPX) company. Wind farm connection agreements will be signed to maximize utilization of wind resource. In spite of submarine cable HVDC connected to Korea mainland, Jeju power system is independently operated by frequency and reserve control. This study reevaluates wind power limit based on the KPX criteria from 2016 to 2020. First of all wind power generation limit are affected by off-peak demand in Jeju power system. Also the possibility capacity rate of charging wind power output is evaluated by using energy storage system (ESS). As a result, in case of using 110MWh ESS, wind power limit increases 33~55MW(30~50% of ESS), wind power constraint energy decreases from 68,539MWh to 50,301MWh and wind farm capacity factor increases from 25.9 to 26.1% in 2020.

  • Energy harvesting is a concept introduced in 1954 by Bell Labs in the US while conducting research on solar cells that convert sunlight into energy. Such energy harvesting technology is a technology that collects wasted or unused energy in daily life and recycles it as electric power. In particular In the case of a photovoltaic power generation system, energy harvesting can be applied by storing electricity generated by using a battery to reduce power consumption generated by the inverter in the form of loss of power generation in cloudy weather compared to sunny days. Therefore, in this paper, energy harvesting technology is applied in the low sunlight section such as sunrise, sunset, and cloudy weather to improve the amount of power generation by recovering the power that is below the minimum operating voltage of the inverter and dissipated. Accordingly, the research contents were verified through the development of systems and algorithms according to the amount of solar power generation and the development of systems and algorithms using low power generated in sunset, sunrise, and other environments.

  • Piezoelectric materials have been investigated as vibration energy converters to power wireless devices or MEMS devices due to the recent low power requirements of such devices and the advancement in miniaturization technology. Piezoelectric power generation can be an alternative to the traditional power source-battery because of the presence of facile vibration sources in our environment and the potential elimination of the maintenance required for large volume batteries. This paper represents the new power source which supplies energy device node. This system, called "energy harvesting system", with piezo materials scavenges extra energy such as vibration and acceleration from the environment. Then it converts the mechanical energy scavenged to electrical energy for powering device This paper explains the properties of piezo material through theoretical analysis and experiments The developed system provides a solution to overcome the critical problem of making up wireless device networks.

  • In the future, self-contained sensors and processing units will need on-board, renewable power supplies to be truly autonomous. One way of supplying such power is through energy harvesting, processes by which ambient forms of energy are converted into electricity. One energy harvesting technique involves converting kinetic energy, in the form of vibrations, into electrical energy through the use of piezoelectric materials. Researchers are currently investigating how piezoelectric materials can be used to harvest power. This study examines the use of auxiliary structures, consisting of a mechanical fixture and a lead zirconate/lead titanate (PZT) piezoelectric element, which can be attached to any boundary conditions vibrating beam of the any boundary conditions. Adjusting various boundary conditions of these structures can maximize the strain induced in the attached PZT element and improve power output.

  • A high energy arcing fault event occurred in the medium-voltage (13.8 kV and 4.16 kV) metalclad switchgears in a nuclear power plant not only affecting switchgear but also connected equipment due to the arc energy. The high energy arcing fault also causes a fire that influences the safety function of the unit. Therefore, from the safety point of view, it is necessary to evaluate the influences of high energy arcing fault events on the safety functions of nuclear power plants. The purpose of this paper is to elaborate the characteristics of high energy arcing faults and propose a high energy arcing fault mitigation scheme for medium voltage networks in nuclear power plants.
