  • This paper presents the development process for a high-power diode laser for metal surface hardening. To combine the emissions from several laser bars, it is necessary to collimate the emitted light using an optical lens. Thus, to achieve a suitable power density and uniform beam profile, several optical layouts were proposed. To estimate the laser beam for a flat-top distribution, a numerical analysis was performed using the ZEMAX software, and the results were compared with the experimental results. With a focal lens assembled in a serial diode stack source, the design can utilize the advantage of compacting the overall beam size. Experimental results for a robotic system demonstrated the processing ability of this diode laser module in industrial laser hardening.

  • Single-phase full-bridge inverters have shoot-through problems. Dead time is an essential way of solving these issues, but it distorts the output voltage and current. Dual-buck inverters are designed to eliminate the abovementioned problems. However, these inverters result in switching power loss and electromagnetic interference due to the diode reverse-recovery problem. Previous studies have suggested reducing the switching power loss from diode reverse-recovery, but their proposed methods have complex circuit configurations and high system costs. To alleviate the switching power loss from diode reverse-recovery, the current work proposes a dual-buck inverter with a coupled inductor. In the structure of the proposed inverter, the current flowing into the original diode is divided into a new diode. Therefore, the switching power loss is reduced, and the efficiency of the proposed inverter is improved. Simulation waveforms and experimental results for a 1.0 kW prototype inverter are discussed to verify the performance of the proposed inverter.

  • An improved power supply for APD(Avalanche Photo Diode) with a received optical power monitoring circuit allows the received optical power increase temporary without of the degradation of the electrical signal. For the cost reduction and simple fabrication, an improved power supply has been proposed that it was designed for driving a APD as a receiving device of a wireless optical transmission system. It was demonstrated that it was possible to improve a dynamic range by compensating the temperature coefficient of the APD up to 1.0 V/$^{\circ}C$ through the power supply. Also, for an efficient transmission at the receiver end, a simple structure of a single cylindrical micro-lens configuration was used in conjunction with the laser diode to partially compensate a laser beam ellipticity. For this purpose, an astigmatism introduced by the micro-lens is utilized for the additional compensation of the beam ellipticity at the receiver end. In this paper, it is demonstrated that an efficient beam shaping is realized by using the proposed configuration consisting of the single lens attached to the laser diode.

  • In general, Diode makes a major role in electronic circuit. For example, switching of rectifier, cross current of switching rectifier, energy transfer of electronic element and reverse charge of capacitor, voltage insulation, energy feedback from load to power supply, and such as recovery of storaged energy. Generally, We regard power diode as ideal element, but it has a certain boundary actually, specially, We use diode for detecting circuit peak hold voltage signal. It has cut in voltage. It occurs error of measurement value namely. This error, below in region diode voltage drop (0.7v) measurement value is wholesome signal, Specially, We can not get precision data. Therefore, precision level is low between theoretical and measurement data because of error in actual circuit. Conclusionally, In this paper, We define the error concerning to the power diode characteristics which is used detecting of the minute signal, and recommend the method that minimize measurement error.

  • In this paper, a digital average current mode control using diode current sensing technique is proposed. Although the conventional inductor current sensing technique is widely used, the sensed signal of the current is negative. As a result, it requires an additional circuit to be applied to general digital controller ICs. The proposed diode current sensing method not only minimizes the peripheral circuit around the digital IC but also consumes less power to sense current information than the inductor current sensing method. The feasibility of the proposed technique is verified by experiments using a 500W power factor correction (PFC) boost rectifier.

  • In this paper, a predistortion linearizer using series diode is proposed for linearizing the power amplifier in microwave radio systems. The power amplifier should be operated near saturation region to achieve high efficiency. But at this region, amplitude and phase distortions of the amplifier remarkably increase with the increase of input power and cause a significant adjacent channel interference. The linearizer is composed of a series diode with a parallel capacitor, which provides positive amplitude and negative phase deviations with the increasing input power. This type of linearizer using the nonlinearity of diode has improved the C/I(Carrier to Intermodulation Distortion) ratio well. By applying this linearizer to two-tone 880MHz power amplifier, adjacent channel leakage power is improved up to 5dBm.

  • The three-phase diode rectifier with capacitive filter is highly sensitive to line voltage unbalance. Because of its inherent nonlinear characteristics, small line voltage unbalance may cause highly unbalanced line current, causing detrimental effects on power quality. This paper presents a theoretical basis on this ′unbalance amplification effect′ and derives an analytical model of line current characteristics under unbalanced line voltage condition for various modes of operation. The results provide a basic guideline for optimal design of a three-phase diode rectifier with capacitive filter that is most commonly used for interfacing various power conversion equipments to power lines.

  • In this paper, an I-V characteristics of bypass diode has been studied by counting the shading effect in photovoltaic module. The shadow induces hot spot phenomenon in PV module due to the increase of resistance in the current path. Two different types of PV module with and without bypass diode were fabricated to expect maximum output power with an increasing shading rate of 5 % on the solar cell. Temperature distribution is also detected by shading the whole solar cell for the outdoor test. From the result, the bypass diode works properly over 60 % of shading per cell with constant output power. Maximum power generation in case of solar cell being totally shaded with bypass diode decreases 41.3 % compared with the one under STC(Standard Test Condition). On the other hand, the maximum output power of the module without bypass diode gradually decreases by showing hot spot phenomenon with the increase of shading ratio on the cell and finally indicates 95.5 % of power loss compared with the output under STC. Finally the module temperature measured increases around $10^{\circ}C$ higher than that under STC due to hot-spots which come from the condition without bypass diode. It has been therefore one of the main reasons for degrading the PV module and shortening the durability of the PV system.

  • In this paper, we studied the shadow effect which is one of environmental cause for hot-spot phenomenon on PV by considering electrical effects. We fabricated PV module in case of existence and nonexistence of bypass diode. And maximum output power and thermal distribution was analyzed by shadowing solar cell by increase of 5%. From the results, the PV module's(without bypass diode) maximum output power was reduced by hot-spot gradually. But the PV module's(with bypass diode) maximum output power had no reduction by operation of bypass diode, though solar cell is shadowed more than 60%. The solar cell temperature of PV module(without bypass diode) was $10^{\circ}C$ higher compared to module's one. This is a reason for shortening of durability of PV module.
