  • The most important design factor for portable devices is power consumption. In this paper, in the early design stage of a mobile device which measures temperature and humidity a power consumption model will be proposed and then the overall power consumption will be estimated based on this model. We will verify previously the correctness of such estimated power consumption before implementation of the real device. That is our proposed design methodology based on power consumption model. An improved design method for efficiently reducing the current consumption in the idle mode is also presented. By implementing a real prototype of the mobile device for measuring temperature and humidity, the correctness of our proposed design methodology based on power consumption modeling will be verified.

  • This study predicts the power consumption of an Electric Propulsion Ship (EPS) in marine environment. The EPS is driven by a propeller rotated by a propulsion motor, and the power consumption of the propeller changes by the marine environment. The propulsion motor consumes the highest percentage of the ships' total power. Therefore, it is necessary to predict the power consumption and determine the power generation capacity and the propeller capacity to design an efficient EPS. This study constructs a power estimation simulator for EPS by using a ship motion model including marine environment and an electric power consumption model. The usage factor that represents the relationship between power consumption and propulsion is applied to the simulator for power prediction. Four marine environment scenarios are set up and the power consumed by the propeller to maintain a constant ship speed according to the marine environment is predicted in each scenario.

  • This paper considers a performance analysis of set-top box (STB) power saving schemes. STB converts the signal into content which is then displayed on the television (TV) screen, and there are typically two operation modes: on mode and stand-by mode. The total energy consumption (TEC), a typical measure of power consumption of STB, is defined by the sum of power consumption in each mode. Recently there are some works of STB power saving schemes that transit STB operation modes efficiently, and the mode transition time point of those schemes can be different. Thus it is required to develop a performance evaluation method that reflects mode transition time points of each scheme to get TEC correctly. This paper proposes a performance evaluation method for STB power consumption using Poisson process to consider the mode transition time point. By modeling STB mode transitions as events of Poisson process, the average time duration of STB mode is computed and accordingly the effect of power saving is evaluated. The performance evaluation result shows that the proposed method achieves 1 to 19% improvement in power consumption compared with a conventional performance evaluation method.

  • For the low-power design of the mobile multimedia system architecture, this paper modeling the mobile multimedia system and analysis the power consumption profile about the whole communication environment. The mobile system model consist of air interface, RIP front-end, base-band processing module and human interface. For the result of power consumption profile analysis, the power consumption of multimedia processing is above 60% compare to the whole power consumption in mobile multimedia system. To minimize the power consumption in processing module which consumes the large power, this paper proposed the Microscopic DVS technique which applies the optimum voltage for the each multimedia frame. For the simulation result, proposed power minimization technique reduce the power consumption about 30%.

  • The differential power analysis calculates the intermediate value related to sensitive information and substitute into the power model to obtain (hypothesized) power consumption. After analyzing the calculated power consumption and measuring power consumption, the secret information value can be obtained. Hamming weight and hamming distance models are most commonly used power consumption model, and the power consumption model is obtained through the modeling technique. If the power consumption model assumed by the actual equipment differs from the power consumption of the actual equipment, the side channel analysis performance is declined. In this paper, we propose a method that records measured power consumption and exploits as power consumption model. The proposed method uses the power consumption at the time when the information (plain text, cipher text, etc.) available in the encryption process. The proposed method does not need template in advance and uses the power consumption measured by the actual equipment, so it accurately reflects the power consumption model of the equipment.. Simulation and experiments show that by using our proposed method, side channel analysis is improved on the existing power modeling method.

  • Piezoelectric elements are one of good candidates able to replace motors in various electronics devices. It is slim and compact and low power consumption compare to motors. Linear regulator or class-D amplifier are generally used for piezoelectric element driver, however, suffers from severe power consumption. In this paper, electrical modeling of piezoelectric element will be presented and switching losses on the driver due to the parasitic capacitance will be analyzed. And new ZVS full bridge converter with an inductor will be proposed so as to reduce the power losses.

  • This paper is about modeling on 1500V DC electric railroad system. Electric railroad systems have peculiar characteristics against other electric system. The characteristics arc that the railroad systems have electric vehicle loads which are power-varying and location-varying with time. Because of this load characteristic, the electric railroad system modeling which reflects its own characteristics on EMTDC simulation could not be achieved. However, to reflect load characteristic on EMTDC, this paper suggests electric railroad system modeling by using TPS (Train Performance Simulator) that was developed in Korea Railroad Research Institute. A TPS program has various kinds of input data, such as operation condition, vehicle condition, and power system condition. By these data, TPS calculates mechanical power consumption and location, especially it decide electric power consumption on the basis of the fact that consumed electric and mechanical power are equal. Moreover, on this paper, movement of vehicle is reflected on EMTDC simulation as variation of feeder impedance. Also, an electric vehicle load is modeled as time-varying constant power load model.

  • This paper presents a novel optimization method for the air- and gas-supplying network comprised of several air compression systems and air and gas streams in an industrial chemical plant. The optimization is based on the hybrid model developed by Han and $Han^1$ for predicting the power consumption of a compression system. A constrained optimization problem was formulated to minimize the total electric power consumption of all the compression systems in the air- and gas-supplying network under various operating constraints and was solved using a successive quadratic optimization algorithm. The optimization approach was applied to an industrial terephthalic acid manufacturing plant to achieve about 10% reduction in the total electric power consumption under varying ambient conditions.

  • This paper presents experimental instruction-level current consumption model for low power microcontroller ATmega128. The accessibility of instruction for internal memory decides power consumption of the microcontroller as much as 17% of difference between access instruction and non-access instruction. The power consumption for the given program will be increased in the proportional to the ratio of memory access instruction and lower level memory access in the hierarchy. Throughout the current consumption model, the power consumption can be predicted and optimized in the direction of reducing the frequency memory access. Also, the various optimization methods are introduced in terms of software and hardware viewpoints.

  • This paper proposes a performance evaluation method for power consumption of set-top box (STB) stand-by mode transition schemes. A stand-by mode transition scheme characterizes the timing of mode transition. The timing of mode transition affects the duration of stand-by mode operation, and the power consumptions of STB as well. Recently a fast stand-by mode transition scheme (FMT) has been proposed based on user input for selecting the device to be connected to TV. In this paper, we evaluate power consumption of FMT and a conventional mode transition scheme. For the computation of the duration of stand-by mode operation, the user input events are modeled as Poisson process. Simulation results based on the modeling reveals that the proposed scheme is more effective in power saving than the conventional scheme by up to 30%.
