  • Wind power is the fastest growing renewable energy source in the world and it is expected to remain so for some times. Recently, there is a constant need for the reduction of Operational and Maintenance(O&M) costs of Wind Energy Conversion Systems(WECS). The most efficient way of reducing O&M cost would be to utilize CMS(Condition Monitoring System) of WECS. CMS allows for early detection of the deterioration of the wind generator's health, facilitating a proactive action, minimizing downtime, and finally maximizing productivity. There are two types of faults such as mass unbalance and aerodynamic asymmetry which are related to wind turbine's rotor faults. Generally, these faults tend to generate various vibrations. Therefore, in this work a simple fault detection algorithm based on spectrums of vibration signals and simple max-min decision logic is proposed. Furthermore, in order to verify its feasibility, several simulation studies are carried out by using GH-bladed software.

  • Cause of excessive vibration with twice the rotational speed of a two-pole generator rotor for the fossil power plants was investigated. The two-pole generator rotor, treated as a typically asymmetric rotor in vibration analysis, produces asynchronous vibration with twice the rotational speed, sub-harmonic critical speeds, and potentially unstable operating zones due to its own inertia and/or stiffness asymmetry. This paper introduces a practical balancing procedure, and presents the results of the investigation on sources of the excessive vibration based on the experimental vibration data of the asymmetric two-pole rotor in balancing.

  • We have calculated the power extraction efficiency and the lasing wavelength distribution of index-coupled DFB lasers at threshold for various kL and facet reflectivity combinations, and compared with those above-threshold. The power extraction efficiency increases as the asymmetry of the facet reflectivities increases. The power extraction efficiency above-threshold is slightly larger than that at threshold. Since the relative photon density around the center region increases as kL increases, the power extraction efficiency decreases. The uniformity of the distribution of lasing wavelength over the stop band increases due to the relief of mode degeneracy as the asymmetry of the facet reflectivities increases. In the case of AR-HR combination, the lasing wavelength distributions at threshold are similar to those above-threshold. However, in the case of AR-AR combination, the lasing wavelength at threshold is concentrated on both edges of the stop band, while it is concentrated only on the longer wavelength edge above-threshold. As kL increases, the range of the lasing wavelength distribution increases due to the increase of the stop band. The effect of AR reflectivity on the power extraction and the lasing wavelength distribution is very weak.

  • Autonomic and EEG responses were analyzed in 32 college students exposed to visual stimulation with Korean Affective Picture System (KAPS) and 36 students exposed to the International Affective Picture System (IAPS). Cardiac, electrodermal, and electrocortical measures were recorded during 30 sec of viewing affective pictures. The slides intended to elicit basic emotions (fear, anger, surprise, disgust, and sadness) were presented to subjects via Kodak slide-projector. The aim of the study was to differentiate autonomic and EEG responses associated with the same negative valence emotions elicited by KAPS and IAPS stimulation and to identify the influence of cultural relevance on physiological reactivity. The analysis of obtained results revealed significant differences in physiological responsiveness to emotionally negative valence slides from KAPS and IAPS. The typical response profile for all emotions elicited by the KAPS included HR acceleration (except surprise), and increase of electrodermal activity, slow and fast alpha blocking and fast beta power increase in EEG, which was not associated with significant asymmetry (except fast alpha in sadness). Stimulation with the IAPS evoked HR deceleration, specific electrodermal responses with relatively high tonic electrodermal activation, alpha-blocking and fast beta increase, and was accompanied also by theta power increase and marked frontal asymmetry (e.g., fast beta, theta asymmetries in sadness, fast alpha in fear). Physiological responses to fear and anger-eliciting slides from the IAPS were significantly less profound and were accompanied by autonomic and EEG changes more typical for attention rather than negative affect. Higher cardiovascular and electrodermal reactivity to fear emotion observed in the KAPS, e.g., as compared to data with the IAPS as stimuli, can be explained by cultural relevance and higher effectiveness of the KAPS in producing certain emotions such as fear in Koreans.

  • Under the conventional control strategy, the asymmetry of arm impedances may result in the poor operating performance of modular multilevel converters (MMCs). For example, fundamental frequency oscillation and double frequency components may occur in the dc and ac sides, respectively; and submodule (SM) capacitor voltages among the arms may not be balanced. This study presents an enhanced control strategy to deal with these problems. A mathematical model of an MMC with asymmetric arm impedance is first established. The causes for the above phenomena are analyzed on the basis of the model. Subsequently, an enhanced current control with five integrated proportional integral resonant regulators is designed to protect the ac and dc terminal behavior of converters from asymmetric arm impedances. Furthermore, an enhanced capacitor voltage control is designed to balance the capacitor voltage among the arms with high efficiency and to decouple the ac side control, dc side control, and capacitor voltage balance control among the arms. The accuracy of the theoretical analysis and the effectiveness of the proposed enhanced control strategy are verified through simulation and experimental results.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of virtual reality bowling on emotional changes using EEG (Electroencephalogram). Sixteen bowling players who have at least three years of experiences in bowling participated in this study. Their aged ranged from 26 to 35 years old with a mean age of 29.6 years. The frontal lobes (Fp2-Fp1, F4-F3, F8-F7) of each player were measured while subjects were performing five games of bowling. And after performing every frame, their emotion was measured immediately with Visual Analogue Scale. The data were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance to test differences in the alpha value of each region of the frontal lobes. The dependent variable is the alpha power of the cerebral asymmetry. The results showed that players who scored a strike showed higher VAS values than those who missed the spares or cleared the spares; those who cleared spares showed higher VAS values than those who missed spares In addition, with respect to frontal R-L asymmetry score, the alpha-wave of the left frontal lobe was activated when scoring a strike and clearing spares and the alpha-wave of the right frontal lobe was activated when missing spares. In conclusion, the results of this study demonstrated that success or achievement in competition gives rise to positive emotions and vice versa. This study neurophysiologically proved that performance outcomes during a competition directly influence players' emotion and brain waves.

  • A multilayer piezoelectric transformer (MPT) which generates a high voltage dc power with low driving voltage and high voltage setup ratio was made by the tape casting method. The measured electrical characteristics of the MPT agreed with the results simulated from the equivalent circuit of the MPT. With increasing the number of layer in the MPT, the resonance curve of the input cur-rent revealed an asymmetry due to the increasing input capacitance, while that of output dc voltages revealed symmetry. The MPT which has very thin layer was excellently characterized as low driving voltage and high voltage setup ratio. The output dc voltage is nonlinearly influenced by the number of layer in the MPT.

  • This paper describes a CFD investigation into the flow over the cab of a bluff-fronted lorry. Several different simulations were undertaken, using the commercial codes: CFX, Fluent and PowerFLOW. Using the $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model, the flow over the cab was symmetric, however, using more accurate turbulence models such as the RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$ model or the Reynolds Stress Model, the flow was asymmetric. The paper discusses whether this phenomenon is a real effect or whether it is a solver artefact and the study is supported by experimental evidence. The findings are preliminary, but suggest that it has a physical origin and that it may be aspect ratio-dependent.

  • This paper deals with the issue of trajectory tracking control of a hydraulic excavator using disturbance observer in order to compensate external disturbances occuring from coupling between attachment, asymmetry of a single rod cylinder, and deadzone of main control valve. Disturbance compensation control system with disturbance observer has been constructed for the boom and arm respectively. Simulation results were compared with experimental results to validate the computer simulation system of hydraulic excavator itself. Computer simulation shows that disturbance compensation control is effective for compensating system nonlinearity and thus improves positioning accuracy and trajectory tracking performance. Steady state error has been decreased by adding PI controller to this control scheme.
