Input Impedance and Current Feedforward Control of Single-Phase Boost PFC Converters

  • The combination of voltage feedforward and feedback control is a conventional approach for correcting the power factor in single-phase ac-dc boost converters. The feedback duty ratio increases significantly with an increase of the line frequency and input inductance. Therefore, the performance of the conventional approach is highly dependent on the bandwidth of the feedback controller. As a result, the input power quality can be significantly exacerbated due to uncompensated duty ratios if the feedback controller is limited. This paper proposes an input impedance and current feedforward control method to reduce the control portion of the feedback controller. The findings in this paper are 1) the theoretical derivation and analysis of variations of line frequency and input inductance on a power factor correction approach, 2) guaranteed consistent performance in a wide range of conditions, and 3) that a low switching frequency can be utilized by the proposed method. A MATLAB/Simulink model and a 1.2kW dual boost converter are built to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • In this paper, we design and implement the monolithic power factor correction IC for system power modules using a high voltage(50V) CMOS process. The power factor correction IC is designed for power applications, such as refrigerator, air-conditioner, etc. It includes low voltage logic, 5V regulator, analog control circuit, high-voltage high current output drivers, and several protection circuits. And also, the designed IC has standby detection function which detects the output power of the converter stage and generates system down signal when load device is under the standby condition. The simulation and experimental results show that the designed IC acts properly as power factor correction IC with efficient protective functions.

  • This paper discusses the development of a reactive power controller using digital signal processing. Digital Signal Processing is the technique of using digital devices to Process continuous signals or data, often in real-time. And DSP algorithms are associated with a discrete time interval between input samples. When one designs a digital filter, one can use a Laplace transform to determine the continuous time frequency response. The corresponding discrete time transform is called Z transform and depends upon discrete samples of the input spaced equally in time. The objectives of this paper are to minimize real power losses and improve the power factor of a given system. Also, the implementation of a direct-form non recursive filter on the TMS320C31 has been described. The application of this microprocessor-based controller using DSP on test system reveals its numerous advantages. Performance and features of the controller for the reactive power control are analyzed.

Scheme to Improve the Line Current Distortion of PFC Using a Predictive Control Algorithm

  • This paper presents a scheme to improve the line current distortion of power factor corrector (PFC) topology at the zero crossing point using a predictive control algorithm in both the continuous conduction mode (CCM) and discontinuous conduction mode (DCM). The line current in single-phase PFC topology is distorted at the zero crossing point of the input AC voltage because of the characteristic of the general proportional integral (PI) current controller. This distortion degrades the line current quality, such as the total harmonic distortion (THD) and the power factor (PF). Given the optimal duty cycle calculated by estimating the next state current in both the CCM and DCM, the proposed predictive control algorithm has a fast dynamic response and accuracy unlike the conventional PI current control method. These advantages of the proposed algorithm lower the line current distortion of PFC topology. The proposed method is verified through PSIM simulations and experimental results with 1.5 kW bridgeless PFC (BLPFC) topology.

  • The photovoltaic power generation system has a great future as clean energy instead of fossil fuel, which has many environmental problems such as exhausted gas or air pollution. In a utility interactive photovoltaic generation system, a three phase inverter is used for the connection between the photovoltaic array and the utility. This paper presents a three phase inverter for photovoltaic power system with current controller, voltage controller, PLL control system and the phase detector of interactive voltage by using dq transformation. The proposed inverter system provides a sinusoidal ac current for domestic loads and the utility line with unity power factor.

  • This paper presents a high power-hybrid multilevel PWM rectifier with unity power factor. The features and advantages of the proposed PWM rectifier can be summarized as follows; 1) It realizes the high power high voltage AC/DC power conversion. 2) It uses no transformer which is bulky and heavy, 3) It has hybrid structure so that switching devices can be effectively utilized, 4) It produces high quality AC current even in high power high voltage applications, 5) The input power factor remains unity by simple modulation index control. The multilevel rectifier is analyzed by using the circuit DQ transformation whereby the characteristics and control equations are obtained.

  • 부스트 PFC (Power Factor Correction)컨버터는 AC 입력 전류의 단일 역률과 낮은 THD (Total Harmonic Distortion)를 달성하기 위해 다양한 제어기법들이 연구되고 있다. 그중 인덕터 전류의 평균값을 전류지령에 추종하도록 제어하는 평균전류 모드 제어가 있으며 가장 널리 사용되고 있다. 하지만, 오늘날 디지털 프로세서의 발달로 고도화된 디지털 제어가 가능해지면서 부스트 PFC 컨버터의 예측제어가 관심을 받고 있다. 예측제어에는 예측 알고리즘으로 듀티를 미리 생성하는 예측전류 모드 제어 및 모델을 기반으로 한 비용함수를 선정하여 스위칭 동작을 하는 모델예측제어로 분류된다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 부스트 PFC 컨버터의 평균전류 모드 제어, 예측전류 모드 제어, 모델예측 전류 제어를 간단히 설명한다. 또한, 시뮬레이션을 통해 전체 부하 및 다양한 외란 조건에서의 전류 제어를 비교 분석한다.

  • In most railway vehicle applications, a single phase AC/DC converter is used greatly and is essential equipment for Korea High Speed Train. A diode bridge rectifier and a phase-controlled thyristor bridge rectifier generate harmonics in power system. Nowadays, power factor and harmonics become major issue in electrical equipment for railway vehicle. Many researchers have been trying to improve the power factor and ac-side harmonics. Therefore the PWM converter is used to operate at unity Power factor and to reduce ac-side current harmonics. This paper describes the circuit for AC/DC PWM converter of Korea High Speed Train and proposes control algorithm to realize the sinusolidal input current waveform and the effective unity power factor. The validity of the proposed control method is verified through the experimental result.
