  • The main objective of this study is to evaluate adsorptive removal of Methylene Blue (MB) dye from aqueous solution using pumice powder. The effects of pH, adsorption time, agitation speed, adsorbent dose, and dye concentrations on dye adsorption were investigated. Process kinetics and isotherm model constants were determined accordingly. The results showed that adsorbent dose, dye concentration and agitation speed are the important parameters on dye adsorption and the removal of MB did not significantly change by varying pH. A total adsorption process time of 60 min was observed to be sufficient to effectively remove 50 mg/L MB concentration. The MB adsorption data obeyed both pseudo first order and second order kinetic models. Adsorption of MB by pumice fitted well both Langmiur and Freundlich isotherms ($R^2{\geq}0.9700$), except for 150 rpm agitation speed that system fitted only Langmiur isotherm. The results of this study emphasize that pumice powder can be used as a low cost and effective adsorbent for dye removal.

  • In order to examine the availability of color developing for prepared persimmon extract powder dyes, purified and freeze-dried powder from immature persimmon fruit. The cotton fabrics dyed with 1% concentration of powder dyes. This study was conducted to examine into the color developing effects of the powder dye for the dyed cotton fabrics irradiated with xenon light. Powder dye is difficult to dissolve in water resulting in a colloidal and viscous solution. The problem of solubility in water was resolved by setting the dyeing conditions by wetting the dye with alcohol in advance and dissolving in warm water($50{\sim}60^{\circ}C$). Samples had no alkaline conversion in making process of powder dyes showed high color developing effect(${\Delta}E^*$, K/S). Samples showed decreased ${\Delta}E^*$, K/S with increased alkaline conversion in making process of powder dyes. Samples that had alkaline effects displayed easy early color developing to be advantageous in the process of natural pattern in art work.

  • We prepared natural indigo/calcium hydroxide complex powder from tinctoria's leaf, according to the demand of developing new dyeing technique of natural fibre with natural indigo. FT- IR and UV/Visible spectra were operated to find the dyeing properties of synthetic indigo and natural indigo powder. Cotton, flax and silk fabrics were dyed with different pH, dye concentration and dyeing time. The colour yield of indigo dye was quite sensitive to dye bath pH and fabric. In synthetic indigo, the highest K/S value of dyed silk fabric was shown at near pH 9.0, and which of flax and cotton fabric were shown at pH 11.0. In other hand, in the case of natural indigo complex powder, the highest K/S value of dyed silk fabric was shown at near pH 8.0, and which of flax and cotton fabric were shown at pH 9.5∼pH 10. Mercerized cotton fabric dyed with natural indigo powder has a little antimicrobial activity.

  • Superfine down-powder/viscose blend films were prepared and characterized for their dyeing properties. Down-powder with average size of $2.56{\mu}m$ were suspended in viscose dope and blend films were obtained by solution casting. When the blend films were dyed with acid dye, the dye uptake and K/S values increased with the increase in down-powder content. Amino-acid analyses showed that amino acid component of the down were not affected during the film formation, which confirmed the changes of dye uptake and K/S value.

  • This study aims to provide practical information of both color and hands of cotton fabrics dyed with persimmon dye powder for natural dyeing fashion industries by investigating dyeing behavior and color gamut, by testing mechanical properties depending on color characteristics, and finally by evaluating dyeing fastness. As results, the persimmon dye powder obtained by extracting the fruits to final solid powder was found as containing tannin and it partially coated between and on fibers similarly to traditionally dyed one. The K/S values of non-mordanted fabric and two differently mordanted ones with Fe and Cu seemed to reach their equilibrium from 800, 800, and 600% (owf), respectively. Yellow-red was the only one hue shown while tones were various as pale (p), light grayish (ltg), soft (sf), dull (d), grayish (g), and dark grayish (dkg). In mechanical properties, the dyed fabrics with p and ltg tended to be less altered than undyed ones whereas d and d kg by higher bath concentrations could be applied to boxy silhouette owing to their increased stiffness and less stretchability. Although fastness to dry cleaning and stain was good, color change by washing and rubbing needed to be improved.

  • This study investigates the current status and dyeing properties of various natural indigo powder dyes in the domestic market. Products from India, China, Europe are sold in the market and only a few manufacturers provide recommendation for the method of dyeing and information on the additives. Through the market research and the preliminary investigation on 21 products, 11 were selected for the dyeing experiment which include 3 Indian, 3 Chinese, 2 German, and 1 Pakistani origin indigo reduced powders, and 2 Indian origin dried indigo leaf powder. The two dyeing methods used were the precipitation method and the fresh juice method, both at $10^{\circ}C$, $25^{\circ}C$, and $60^{\circ}C$. Color difference, K/S value, and colorfastness of dyed cotton fabrics were examined. Indian reduced indigo powder showed the highest K/S value, deep dyeing, and the best color fastness. Chinese reduced indigo powder resulted in a more greenish and bluish color. Powders of dried indigo leaves were easy to use but resulted in a pale color due to low dye uptake.

  • Dyeing properties of cow leather was investigated with Tumeric powder. The effects of dyeing conditions, mordanting conditions, color change, and color fastnesses were studied. The results were as follows. The dye uptake increased as dye concentration, dyeing temperature, and bath ratio increased. In the effect of dyeing time, the highest dye uptakes showed at 20 minutes and decreased after that point. Pre mordanting was more effective than the post mordanting, and the dye uptakes improved all mordanted fabrics. The highest K/S values showed in pre-Al sample, and the lowest K/S values showed in post-Cu one. The values of Hunter on the samples were more changeable $L^*$ and $b^*$ than $a^*$, and all samples showed Yellow color in Munsell value. But the mordanting methods and mordanting agents were not significant in the color changes. The light fastness of dyed samples showed 1 grade, the dry cleaning and abrasion fastnesses did not improved except post-Fe wet sample.

  • One-step reduction/dyeing method was applied for ramie dyeing with natural indigo powder. The effect of reduction/dyeing conditions including the pH of bath, dye temperature and time, and concentration of indigo powder and reduction agent on dye uptake and color properties were investigated. Regardless of addition of alkali, the dyed fabrics appeared in the PB Munsell color range(${\lambda}_{max}$: 660 nm) and the dye uptake was much higher with no addition of sodium hydroxide. Dyeing was carried out through the use of only sodium hydrosulfite in the bath. The maximum dye uptake was obtained at 60 for 30min. Saturated dye uptake was obtained at 2 g/L of sodium hydrosulfite concentration up to 2 g/ L of indigo powder. Whereas, at higher indigo powder concentration (4 g/L), more than 3 g/L of reducing agent concentration was required for obtaining the saturated dye uptake. Color reproducibility was reliable with color difference in the range of 0.03~0.16. Regardless of color strength, fastness to rubbing was acceptable with a 3/4~4/5. Fastness to washing, dry cleaning, and light of samples with low color strength were poor. Whereas, fastness to washing, dry cleaning, and light of samples with high color strength were very good.
