Pure copper, Cu-1.1wt%Cd and ACSR(Aluminum Conductor Steel Reinforced) have been used as Catenary Materials in Electric Railway System. Since these materials may have chance to be exposed to the corrosive environments like polluted air, acid rain and sea water, it is important not only to investigate the corrosion characteristics but also to measure corrosion rates in various corrosive environments. In order to examine corrosion characteristics according to the dissolved oxygen content, pH, chloride ion concentration ion, and the addition of Cd to Cu, a series of tests such as potentiodynamic polarization. a.c impedance spectroscopy and galvanic corrosion tests were carried out in these materials. Results showed that the addition of Cd to Cu and chloride ion in the solution have an adverse effect on the resistance to corrosion. Additionally, Galvanic currents between Al and steel wires of ACSR were confirmed by using ZRA(zero resistance ammeter) method.

This research was conducted to investigate in detail the effect of $PO_4{^{3-}}$, $CO_3{^{2-}}$ and $F^-$ anions on the electrochemical properties of the thin air-formed oxide film-covered AZ31 Mg alloy. In this work, native air-formed oxide films on AZ31 Mg alloy samples were prepared by knife-abrading method and the changes in the electrochemical properties of the air-formed oxide film were investigated in electrolytes containing 0.01 M, 0.05 M and 0.1 M of $PO_4{^{3-}}$, $CO_3{^{2-}}$ and $F^-$ anions. It was observed that the trend of open circuit potential (OCP) transients changed only in the solution containing $PO_4{^{3-}}$ ions. The Nyquist plots obtained from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) showed that the resistance of the new surface films formed in fluoride ion containing bath increased with the increase in concentration of fluoride ions but the resistance of surface films formed in carbonate ion containing bath decreased with the increase in concentration of carbonate ions. The potentiodynamic polarization curves illustrated that under anodic polarization, there was growth of porous passive layer only in fluoride ion containing solution while the surface layer formed in phosphate and carbonate ion containing solutions lost its passivity at high anodic potential of $2.5V_{Ag/AgCl}$.

Titanium and its alloys that have a good biocompatibility, corrosion resistance, and mechanical properties such as hardness and wear resistance are widely used in dental and orthopedic implant applications. However, they do not form a chemical bond with bone tissue. Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) that combines the high voltage spark and electro-chemical oxidation is a novel method to form ceramic coatings on light metals such as tita-nium and its alloys. This is an excellent re-producibility and economical, because the size and shape control of the nano-structure is relatively easy. Silicon (Si), manganese (Mn), and magne-sium (Mg) have a useful to bone. Particularly, Si has been found to be essential for normal bone, cartilage growth, and development. Mn influences regulation of bone remodeling be-cause its low content in body is connected with the rise of the concentration of calcium, phosphates and phosphatase out of cells. Pre-studies have shown that Mg plays very im-portant roles in essential for normal growth and metabolism of skeletal tissue in verte-brates and can be detected as minor constitu-ents in teeth and bone. In this study, Electrochemical behavior of plasma electrolytic oxidized films formed in solution containing Mn, Mg and Si ions were researched using various experimental in-struments. A series of Si-Mn-Mg coatings are produced on Ti dental implant using PEO, with the substitution degree, respectively, at 5 and 10%. The potentiodynamic polarization and AC impedance tests for corrosion behav-iors were carried out in 0.9% NaCl solution at similar body temperature using a potentiostat with a scan rate of 1.67mV/s and potential range from -1500mV to + 2000mV. Also, AC impedance was performed at frequencies anging from 10MHz to 100kHz for corrosion resistance.

This research was conducted to investigate the electrochemical properties of the thin air-formed oxide film-covered AZ31 Mg alloy. In this work, native air-formed oxide films on AZ31 Mg alloy samples were prepared by knife-abrading method and the changes in the electrochemical properties of the air-formed oxide film were investigated in seven different electrolytes containing the following anions $Cl^-$, $F^-$, $SO{_4}^{2-}$, $NO_3{^-}$, $CH_3COO^-$, $CO{_3}^{2-}$ and $PO{_4}^{3-}$. It was observed from open circuit potential (OCP) transients that the potential initially decreased before gradually increasing again in the solutions containing only $CO{_3}^{2-}$ or $PO{_4}^{3-}$ ions, indicating the dissolution or transformation of the native air-formed oxide film into new more protective surface films. The Nyquist plots obtained from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) showed that there was growth of new surface films with immersion time on the air-formed oxide film-covered specimens in all the electrolytes; the least resistive surface films were formed in fluoride and sulphate baths whereas the most protective film was formed in phosphate bath. The potentiodynamic polarization curves illustrated that passive behaviour of AZ31 Mg alloy under anodic polarization appears only in $CO{_3}^{2-}$ or $PO{_4}^{3-}$ ions containing solutions and at more than $-0.4V_{Ag/AgCl}$ in $F^-$ ion containing solution.
The corrosion of the metallic cell components is blown to be one of the major reason f3r the performance degradation and subsequently the life-time limitation of the MCFC. To elucidate the corrosion phenomena, a corrosion study with the AISI-type 316L stainless steel, the most widely used separator material, in 621Li/38K carbonate eutectic melt was carried out. Corrosion phenomena in an MCFC were observed to differ from one location to another due to different environmental condition. The stability of passive film was found to be responsible fur the variations in corrosion phenomena. According to the potentiodynamic analysis, the passive film formed in anode-gas environment was less stable than in cathode-gas environment. The potentiostatic method combined with XRD analysis in addition to the cyclicvoltammetry was conducted to get an insight on variety corrosion reaction of AISI-type 316L stainless steel in a carbonate melt.
In a borate buffer solution, the growth kinetics and the electronic properties of passive film on aluminum were investigated, using the potentiodynamic method, chronoamperometry, and multi-frequency electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The corrosion of aluminum was heavily influenced by the degree of oxygen concentration because of the increasing reduction current. The oxide film formed during the passivation process of aluminum has showed the electronic properties of n-type semiconductor, which follow from the Mott-Schottky equation. It was found out that the passive film (Al(OH)3) of Al formed in the low electrode potential changes to Al2O3 while the electrode potential increases. The growth kinetics data as measured by chronoamperometry suggests a mechanism in which the growth of the film of Al2O3 is determined by field-assisted transport of ions through the film.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the microstucture and hardness, corrosion of pure Ti alloy, which is widely used as partial denture frame work these days, depending on the cooling method, followed by casting. The first group was bench cooling at room temperature($18^{\circ}C$), the second group was slowly cooled in the furnace from $700^{\circ}C$ to room temperature, and third. rapidly cooled in $0^{\circ}C$ water. The microstructure of each specimen observed by means of photomicrograph taken by electron microscope, in add to the physical characteristics of each specimen were obtained using the rockwell Hardnest Number. the characteristics of corrosion. The results were obtained as follows: 1. From Potentiodynamic plot. we conclude furnace-cooled specimen had the best stabiltity of passive film and that air-cooled specimen showed similar characteristics. The density of electric current of quenched specimen was the highest, which formed kind of unstable passive film. 2. Specimen cooled at room temperature (air cooling) had the highest value of hardness of 81.26HRB, specimen cooled at ice-water, $0^{\circ}C$, had the value of 78.42HRB, and specimen furnace-cooled at $700^{\circ}C$ had lowest value of 77.1HRB. 3. Quenching treated micro-structure formed martensite structure by and large. In case of air cooling, we could see $\alpha$-structure widmanstatten formed overall. In furnace cooling, widmanstatten structure and various shape $\alpha$-structures forming colony with direction were detected.
In this study, Ti powders were fabricated from Ti scrap by the Hydrogenation-Dehydrogenation (HDH) method. The Ti powders were prepared from the spark plasma sintering (SPS) and their microstructure was investigated. Hydrogenation reactions of Ti scrap occurred at near $450^{\circ}C$ with a sudden increase in the reaction temperature and the decreasing pressure of hydrogen gas during the hydrogenation process in the furnace. The dehydrogenation process was also carried out at $750^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs in a vacuum of $10^{-4}$ torr. After the HDH process, deoxidation treatment was carried out with the Ca (purity: 99.5%) at $700^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs in the vacuum system. It was found that the oxidation content of Ti powder that was deoxidized with Ca showed noticeably lower values, compared to the content obtained by the HDH process. In order to fabricate the Ti compacts, Ti powder was sintered under an applied uniaxial punch pressure of 40 MPa in the range of $900-1200^{\circ}C$ for 5 min under a vacuum of $10^{-4}$ torr. The relative density of the compact was 99.5% at $1100^{\circ}C$ and the tensile strength decreased with increasing sintering temperature. After sintering, all of the Ti compacts showed brittle fracture behavior, which occurred in an elastic range with short plastic yielding up to a peak stress. Ti improved the corrosion resistance of the Ti compacts, and the Pd powders were mixed with the HDH Ti powders.

WC-( $Ti_{1-x}$ A $l_{x}$) N coatings of constant changing Al concentration were deposited on S45C substrates by high-ionization sputtered PVD method. The Al concentration could be controlled by using evaporation source for Al and fixing the evaporation rate of the metals (i.e, WC- $Ti_{0.86}$A $l_{0.14}$N, WC- $Ti_{0.72}$A $l_{0.28}$N, and WC- $Ti_{0.58}$A $l_{0.42}$N). The corrosion behavior of WC-( $Ti_{1-x}$ A $l_{x}$)N coatings in a deaerated 3.5% NaCl solution was investigated by electrochemical corrosion tests and surface analyses. The measured galvanic corrosion currents between coating and substrate indicated that WC- $Ti_{0.72}$A $l_{0.28}$N coating showed the best resistance of the coating tested. The results of potentiodynamic polarization tests showed that the WC- $Ti_{0.72}$A $l_{0.28}$N coating deposited with 32W/c $m^2$ of Al target revealed higher corrosion resistance. This indicated that the WC- $Ti_{0.72}$A $l_{0.28}$N coating is effective in improving corrosion resistance. In EIS, the WC- $Ti_{0.72}$A $l_{0.28}$N coating showed one time constant loop and increased a polarization resistance of coating ( $R_{coat}$) relative to other samples. Compositional variations of WC-( $Ti_{1-x}$ A $l_{x}$)N coatings were analyzed by EDS and XRD analysis was performed to evaluate the crystal structure and compounds formation behavior. Surface morphologies of the films were observed using SEM and AFM. Scratch test was performed to measure film adhesion strength.strength. adhesion strength.strength.

In this study, electrochemical methods were used to determine the optimum protection potential of S355ML steel for the cathodic protection of offshore wind-turbine-tower substructures. The results of potentiodynamic polarization experiments indicated that the anodic polarization curve did not represent a passivation behavior, while under the cathodic polarization concentration, polarization was observed due to the reduction of dissolved oxygen, followed by activation polarization by hydrogen evolution as the potential shifted towards the active direction. The concentration polarization region was found to be located between approximately -0.72 V and -1.0 V, and this potential range is considered to be the potential range for cathodic protection using the impressed current cathodic protection method. The results of the potentiostatic experiments at various potentials revealed that varying current density tended to become stable with time. Surface characterization after the potentiostatic experiment for 1200 s, by using a scanning electron microscope and a 3D analysis microscope confirmed that corrosion damage occurred as a result of anodic dissolution under an anodic polarization potential range of 0 to -0.50 V, which corresponds to anodic polarization. Under potentials corresponding to cathodic polarization, however, a relatively intact surface was observed with the formation of calcareous deposits. As a result, the potential range between -0.8 V and -1.0 V, which corresponds to the concentration polarization region, was determined to be the optimum potential region for impressed current cathodic protection of S355ML steel.
