This study was conducted to assess to the knowledge and educational needs of pregnant women relating to antepartum, delivery, postpartum periods, and to identify the variables which influenced their knowledge and educational needs. The study subjects were 282 postpartum women who had delivered fullterm normal babies without any complications. Data were collected from women those who were not more than two days after delivery at general hospitals, 3 maternal child health care centers and 4 midwife's offices in Pusan using questionnaire method from Feb. 1. 1991 to Mar. 20. 1991. The results of this study are as follows 1. Relating to the antepartum period, the knowledge about the time when the sex of fetus was fixed was low, and relating to delivery, the knowledge about the method reducing labor pain was low. 2. Relating to the antepartum period, the educational needs about child rearing was high, and relating to delivery, the educational needs about newborn baby were high. Relating to the postpartum period, the educational needs about emergency care of new born baby were high. 3. There were statistically significant differences in total educational needs by educational level(P<.01), duration of marriage (P<.01), and number of pregnancy(P<.05). 4. There were positive correlation between the total knowledge and educational level and negative correlations between the total knowledge and duration of marriage and age.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the influencing factors of mothers' confidence in their maternal role during the early postpartum period. Methods: Participants were 178 postpartum women who delivered at three specialized obstetrics and gynecology facilities and used the postpartum care facility in city B. Data were collected from February to April, 2012 using the scales of measurements of self-confidence in maternal role performance, maternal self-esteem, mother-to-infant attachment, social support, and childcare stress. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression were used with the SPSS/WIN 18.0 program to analyze the data. Results: The scores for self-confidence in the maternal role showed significant negative correlations with the scores of childcare stress (r=-.40, p<.001). Parity and maternal attachment were significant predictors and accounted for 97.4% of the variance in self-confidence in the maternal role. Conclusion: To strengthen self-confidence in the maternal role of early postpartum mothers, prenatal class programs need to be complemented in order to reduce childcare stress and promote mother-to-infant attachment.
This study was carried out to understand the nursing needs of postpartum women during the postpartum period. The goal of study was to obtain data needed to develop maternal education programs and to improve the nursing quality for postpartum women. A cross-sectional survey design was employed in this study. The subjects were 101 postpartum women who had delivery at 2 general hospitals in Chung-Buk. Korea. Data were collected from Sep. 29 to Nov. 28. 1997 by means of a structured questionnaire. The instrument used for this study was the one which was consisted of revised Maternal Concerns Questionnaire (MCQ) developed by Bull (1979). The data were analyzed through the SPSS/PC+ program by use of frequency, t-test and ANOVA. The results of the study were as follows; 1) The mean score of concerns about 'self' was 2.98 for primipara and 2.80 for multipara but was not statistically significant difference. Among the items of concerns 'for self', 'Being good mothers' was the highest (primipara 3.93. multipara 3.75). 2) The mean score of concerns about 'baby' was 3.64 for primipara and 3.53 for multipara but was not statistically significant difference. Among the items of concerns 'for baby', 'Normal growth and development' was the highest (primipara 3.91. multipara 3.90). 3) The mean score of concerns about 'husband' was 3.33 for primipara and 3.06 for multipara and was statistically significant difference (t=2.11. p=0.03). Among the items of concerns 'for husband', 'Husband being a good father' was the highest (primipara 3.87, multipara 3.77). 4) The mean score of concerns about 'family' was 2.65 for primipara and 2.80 for multipara but was not statistically significant. Among the items of concerns 'for family', 'Change in the family's lifestyle' was the highest(primipara 3.01, multipara 2.93, t=-1.99, p=0.04). 5) The mean score of concerns about 'community' was 2.48 for primipara and 2.42 for multipara but was not statistically significant. Among the items of concerns 'for community'. 'Getting to health care facilities' was the highest (primipara 2.48, multipara 2.42). 6) On considering the relationship between the postpartum women's nursing needs and their general characteristics, 'regularly antenatal care' was statistically significant (t=2.29. p=0.02). In conclusion, recognition of maternal concerns can be used by nurses to identify nursing diagnoses and to develop care plans that reflect the patient's priorities.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop and test the validity and reliability of the Korean version of the Perinatal Infant Care Social Support (K-PICSS) for postpartum mothers. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional design. The K-PICSS was developed through forward-backward translation. Online survey data were collected from 284 Korean mothers with infants 1-2 months of age. The 19-item K-PICSS consists of functional and structural domains. The functional domain of social support measures infant care practices of postpartum mothers. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and known-group comparison were used to verify the construct validity of the K-PICSS. Social support and postpartum depression were also measured to test criterion validity. Psychometric testing was not applicable to the structural social support domain. Results: The average age of mothers was 32.76±3.34 years, and they had been married for 38.45±29.48 months. Construct validity was supported by the results of EFA, which confirmed a three-factor structure of the scale (informational support, supporting presence, and practical support). Significant correlations of the K-PICSS with social support (r=.71, p<.001) and depression (r=-.40, p<.001) were found. The K-PICSS showed reliable internal consistency, with Cronbach's α values of .90 overall and .82-.83 in the three subscales. The vast majority of respondents reported that their husband or their parents were their main sources of support for infant care. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that the K-PICSS has satisfactory construct validity and reliability to measure infant care social support in Korea.
Purpose: To identify the characteristics and health-care needs of high-risk pregnant women in maternal-fetal intensive care units (MFICU). Methods: A mixed-methods design was adopted. Data were collected from 78 high-risk pregnant women admitted to the MFICU. Qualitative data included ten participants' experiences with hospitalization and childbirth, which were analyzed using mixed content analysis. Quantitative data were analyzed using at-test and one-way ANOVA testing. Results: The average score for pregnancy and childbirth health-care needs was 3.54 points. Average score by area was before-admission health care (3.70), health care of baby (3.67), health of childbirth (3.61), postpartum health (3.51), and pregnancy health care during hospitalization (3.48). Qualitative results showed diverse feelings and experiences of high-risk pregnant women and their need for health care, which was expressed in three themes and 11 sub-themes. Conclusion: Nurses should recognize high-risk mothers' feelings and needs for pregnancy and childbirth-focused health care to help patients accept their vulnerability and cope positively.
Objectives: This study was aimed to investigate the weight change of the high-risk group and the general maternal group and weight-relating factors in the early postpartum period. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of those who received postpartum care from January 1, 2020, to December 31, 2020, in the postpartum care center affiliated with one Korean Medicine hospital. A total of 257 postpartum women's medical charts were included and divided into the high-risk group and the general maternal group. We investigated the weight changes and Body mass index (BMI) of the postpartum women and compared the difference between the two groups after taking the postpartum care. Finally, we used a Pearson correlation analysis to identify the weight-relating factors in the early postpartum period. Results: All the postpartum women showed the following results; 33.81±4.03 years old as the mean age; 22.23±3.28 as pre-pregnancy BMI; 58.21±9.18 kg of pre-pregnancy weight increased into 70.75±9.70 kg in the last month of pregnancy. Of the total 257 patients, 149 (58.0%) of high-risk pregnancy experience and 108 (42.0%) of general pregnancy were included. The edema index right after childbirth was significantly higher in the high-risk group than in the general maternal group (p<0.001), but there was no significant difference in BMI. After treatment with Korean medicine treatments, body weight, BMI, and edema index decreased significantly in both groups (p<0.01). As a result of correlation analysis, weight gain during pregnancy had a significant negative correlation with pre-pregnancy weight and pre-pregnancy BMI and a significant positive correlation with weight and BMI of the last month of pregnancy. In particular, pre-pregnancy BMI and body weight showed a significant negative correlation only in the high-risk group. Postpartum weight loss was significantly positively correlated with pre-pregnancy weight, pre-pregnancy BMI, weight & BMI of the pregnancy last month, weight gain during pregnancy, and decrease in edema (p<0.01) Conclusions: The weight during pregnancy of the high-risk group increased in inverse proportion to the pre-pregnancy BMI. The level of edema right after childbirth was significantly higher than that of the general maternal group, but showed a significant decrease after 2 weeks of Korean medicine treatments. Although it implicates the need for active Korean medicine treatments in the early postpartum period, further studies with controlled groups are needed.
Purpose: This study was conducted to examine the effects of simulation-based practice using standardized patients for the care of woman with postpartum hemorrhage as related to clinical performance competence and critical thinking deposition of nursing students. Methods: A nonequivalent control group pre-post test experimental design was used. Fifty four third year students were recruited, 29 students for the experimental group and 25 students for the control group. The simulation-based practice about nursing care related to postpartum hemorrhage included skill training, team-based practice, and debriefing. It was implemented with the experimental group for about 30 minutes in October 6, 2011. Data were analyzed using frequency, ratio, chi-square, Fisher's exact probability, and t-test using the SPSS/WIN program. Results: The experimental group who had the simulation-based practice showed significantly higher knowledge and skills of clinical performance competence than the control group (t=2.19, p=.003). But the experimental group who had the simulation-based practice did not show significantly higher critical thinking deposition than the control group (t=-0.32, p=.748). Conclusion: The results indicate that a simulation-based practice is an effective teaching method to improve knowledge and skills for clinical performance competence of nursing students. Further study is needed to identify the effect of a simulation-based practice on nursing attitudes.
This study was conducted to compare the emotional state between the mothers with low-birth-weights and mothers with normal infants, and to analyze the effects of home visiting for the low-birth-weights in one city. Data were collected from 51 mothers with low-birth-weights and 90 mothers with normal infants to compare emotional state, and from 26 mothers with low-birth weights to evaluate the effect of home visiting care. Summaries of results were as follows; 1. In mothers with low-birth-weights, social support form others was significantly lower than those of mothers with normal infants. Although the differences were not significant, mothers with low-birth-weights have more stress and child rearing burden, and less maternal self-esteem than those of mothers with normal infants. 2. Mothers with low-birth-weights, the more burden, postpartum depression, and the less husbands' support they felt. When they had lower maternal self-esteem and lower husbands' support, child rearing burden was higher. Also there was significant negative correlation between maternal self-esteem and postpartum depression. 3. In mothers with low-birth-weights, the score of post-intervention stress, care-giving burden, and postpartum depression were somewhat decreased, and maternal self-esteem was increased than pre-intervention data, although they were not statistically significant. 4. Mothers' satisfaction on the home-visiting care was considered to be high. In summary, mothers with low-birth-weights had lower social support even though they experienced more stress than mothers with normal infants. Therefore, public health nurse in community should pay more attention to them.
