  • The incidence of small for gestational age (SGA) births is frequent, accounting for 2.3% to 8% of all live births. Several childhood and adult diseases are related to early postnatal growth and birth size, and 10% of children born SGA may have a short stature throughout postnatal life. Additionally, they may have abnormal growth hormone (GH)-insulin like growth factor axis, HPA axis, and gonadal function. Permanent changes are detrimental in an environment of nutritional abundance, and predispose SGA children to an array of diseases in adolescence and adulthood. Such changes may also cause premature pubarche, adrenarche, and precocious puberty. The varying results from clinical studies necessitate more prospective case control studies. Reproductive tract abnormalities and reproductive dysfunction are related to SGA births. GH treatment is required for SGA infants who do not experience catch-up growth.

  • Vitamin B-6 status parameters of mothers were assessed in relation to th condition of the infant at birth and during the neonatal period. Parameters were assessed at birth and then weekly in 18 mother-infant pairs during the neonatal period ; mothers were supplemented postnatally with 2 or 27 mg PN-HCI/d. Vitamin B-6 inadequacy in the 2mg supplemented group was suggested by the vitamin status parameters. Mothers whose infants had unsatisfactory Apgar scores at 5min after birth(<7) had lower vitamin B-6 status parameters than mothers whose infants were scored satisfactory. Also, infants who scored unsatisfactory at birth and whose mothers were supplemented with the low level of PN had significantly lower vitamin B-6 status parameters at 7 days of age than infants who scored satisfactory. Infants scored unsatisfactory showed some beneficial effects in both vitamin B-6 status and growth associated with the higher level of maternal postnatal vitamin B-6 supplement. In summary, the mother's prenatal and postnatal vitamin B-6 intake were significantly related to the condition of her infant at birth and during the neonatal period, respectively.

  • The present study was carried out to reveal the role of ${\gamma}$-aminobutylic acid(GABA) during postnatal period in rat. The suprachiasmatic nucleus(SCN) of hypothalamus has been known as the regulation center of circadian rhythm in the mammalians. In this study, we could find many GABAergic terminals in the SCN from day 1 to day 7 after birth. On the basis of these results, it can be said there are some kinds of inhibitory effects by GABA to the light stimulation of newborn rat.

  • LBD-007, a newly developed recombinant human interferon alphaA, was at dose levels of 0.3 $\times$$10^6$ , 6 $\times$ $10^6$ and 12 $\times$ $10^6$ IU/kg/day administered subcutaneously to pregnant and subsequent delivered SpragueDawley rats from day 17 of gestation through day 21 of lactation. Effects of test substance on dams and growth, behaviour and mating performance of F1 offspring were examined. 1. No treatmene-related changes in clinical signs, food consumption, body weight, pregnant period and necropsy findings were observed in dams.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to report the effect of oriental treatments to postpartum depression. Methods: We treated 41 years old woman and 38 years old woman who had the postpartum depression. In the beginning of treatment, they had anxiety, depression, insomnia, fatigue. They were treated by oriental treatments such as herb medicine, acupuncture, moxa therapy. And then We compared postpartum depression before treatment with one after treatment by Edinburgh postnatal depression scale(EPDS). Results: After the oriental treatments, the clinical symptoms were improved and EPDS was reduced (one reduces from 18 to 10, the other reduces from 17 to 8). Conclusion: Oriental treatments are effective on postpartum depression. After this, further approach and study on postpartum depression might be needed.

  • Schematic diagram of the interaction between the intestinal muscularis externa (MMΦ) macrophages and the enteric nervous system (ENS) neurons during different developmental periods. At the early postnatal stage, MMΦs play a critical role in ENS maturation and refinement through synaptic pruning and enteric neuron phagocytosis. In addition, during the adult stage, a specific MMΦ subset named neuron-associated (NA)-MMΦ, supports enteric neuronal survival and functions. Conversely, enteric neurons promote the phenotypic MMΦ changes by secreting transforming growth factor-β (TGFβ), transitioning them from a phagocytic phenotype in the early postnatal period to a neuroprotective and immune-surveillant phenotype in the young adult period. Disruptions in these interactions could lead to alterations in the enteric neuron numbers, ultimately resulting in reduced gut motility.
