Postcolonial Criticism and Southeast Asian Studies: Pitfalls, Retreat, and Unfulfilled Promises

  • This paper reflects on the relationship between postcolonial criticism (PC) and Southeast Asian Studies. The emphasis is on the apparent premature retreat from PC as well as its unfulfilled promises and persistent pitfalls. I argue that it is premature to abandon PC because it remains relevant, even essential, in the context of the much ballyhooed age of "knowledge economy" or "information society." There is a need to take another look at its promises and to work towards fulfilling them, but at the same time be conscious of its persistent problems.

저지대의 생태학: 제국의 비가시적 느린 폭력의 재현 (Ecology of the Lowland: The Representation of the Invisible Slow Violence of Empire)

  • Under the inhumane oppression of imperialism, the Third World's political violence has been often represented as an immediate and explosive one with an instant, concentrated visibility. Yet the ecological and psychological exploitation of the Third-World countries by empires, as Rob Nixon insists, shows the relative invisibility of slow violence. This paper is to reveal this slow violence of the marginalized areas symbolized as the lowland. Although Arne Naess' deep ecology promotes the inherent worth of living beings regardless of their instrumental utility to human needs. this paper deals with three postcolonial ecological textbooks which criticize the white-centered deep ecology: Amitav Ghosh's The Glass Palace, Jhumpa Lahiri's The Lowland, and Barbara Kingsolver's The Poisonwood Bible. Through postcolonial critical study, this paper finds out that all these three works have some themes in common. First, these postcolonial works assume a shape of family saga which is parallel to the slow violence of ecological and psychological plundering of empires in the postcolonial countries. Second, like the mangroves which have a tenacious hold on life, these postcolonial people rather overcome the heterogenic challenge with the sturdy and tough mind than defeated. Third, the native people's ethics of earth functions as the stronghold for their respectable lifestyle in their indigenous historicity. Finally, as a big fat brother, the Americanized globalization or neoliberalism is warned as the neocolonialism which is often shown as the disguised pattern of greenwashing. Namely, the people's self-enhancement is always prior to the imperialistic development or neoliberalism in the postcolonial ecological texts which sharply contrast the native's life consciousness and the empire's development theory.

"Daffodil Gap": Reading Jamaica Kincaid's Lucy as Intertextual Interrogation of the Postcolonial Condition

  • In Jamaica Kincaid's novel Lucy, the narrator grows up with the burden of colonial legacies embedded with Englands' imperial disciplinary projects, its language, educational institutions, discourses. Colonial education interpellates the narrator into a colonial subject through its multiple ideological discourses and systems. Teaching the literature of England is the most insidious form of the Empire's disciplinary colonial projects, more powerful than military enforcement: Its mode of operation is creating phantasy and instigating and planting desire for such phantasy. As Homi Bhabha aptly theorizes as colonial mimicry and ambivalence, the narrator as colonial subject grows up split and confused as an ambivalent subject, simultaneously mimicking and desiring for the phantasized England as real, while resisting and criticizing such up-bringing and mimetic desire. This paper explores Kincaid's rhetorical strategy of employing Wordsworth's poem, "I Wandered as a Lonely Cloud," especially her use of the flower "daffodil." Employing the concept of "daffodil gap" suggested by postcolonial critics, this paper closely examines two episodes involving the flower daffodil in the novel, one in a colonial classroom and the other in a garden in a new world and suggests that Kincaid accomplishes intertextual critique of colonial education and imperial projects.

The Voice of the Imperial in an Anti-Imperialist Tone: George Orwell's Burmese Days

  • First published in 1934, George Orwell's Burmese Days, which can be read as an example of both descriptive realism and fictional realism, is considered to be a colonial example of British literature because of its publication date. However, based on the personal experience of the author as an imperial officer in Burma, the novel has an anti-imperialist tone, which can also make it possible to read it through postcolonial eyes. As a result, the novel stands as an example of ambivalence since it has both the colonial and the postcolonial perspective; both the colonizer and the colonized are portrayed with their own flaws, adding to the impact of what can be called "Third Space." This is why the voice of the imperial is heard in an anti-imperialist tone in Burmese Days, through which Orwell presents a critique of colonialism with a from-within approach.

Relative Clauses in a Modern Diachronic Corpus of Singapore English

  • This paper investigates changes in relativization in Singapore English broadsheet newspapers from 1993 to 2016. One of the first diachronic studies in Singapore English (SgE), it also explores corresponding data from the diachronic Siena-Bologna (SiBol) news corpus. As SgE is in the endonormative stabilization phase in Schneider's (2007) Dynamic Model of postcolonial Englishes, divergence from British English (BrE) is to be expected. In this study, the dataset is a new Singapore English Newspaper (SEN) corpus compiled from local news articles in 1993, 2005 and 2016, and the corpus tool employed is Sketch Engine. The results reveal changes in relativization practices in SEN over the given period, many of which occur in a similar pattern as those identified in SiBol, albeit at varying rates of change. Most significant of these include a sharp decline in the which relativizer in restrictive relative clauses with non-animate antecedents, complemented by a rise in that. The change has been so rapid that although which relative clauses were more common than that clauses in 1993, that has subsequently overtaken which for both the corpora. One shift in SEN that is different from SiBol is the increase in frequency of non-restrictive relative clauses in SgE. The likely motivators for the changes in the two varieties are identified as colloquialization, densification and prescriptivism. The effect each of these factors could have had on the varieties are discussed, as well as the implications that the findings have on our understanding of the evolutionary status of SgE as a postcolonial variety.

  • 20세기 들어 서구중심적 보편주의에 직접적으로 의문을 제기한 지적 흐름은 이른바 '탈식민주의(Postcolonialisme)이다. 지금까지 제시된 탈식민주의 비평의 주요 성과 가운데 하나는 피식민사회의 정치적 해방이 해당 사회의 경제, 사회, 문화 등의 해방을 담보하지 못하고, 따라서 서구사회의 해방담론- 특히 맑스주의, 민족주의, 여성주의, 해체주의 등이 주창해온 -이 비서구사회에 직접적으로 적용될 수 없다는 사실이다. 이로 인해 서구사회와 비서구사회는 안타깝게도 서로 다른 미래와 해방을 꿈꾸고 있으며, 따라서 이들 사이에 소위 '지정학적 대화'가 요구된다는 당위성이 노출되었다. 그러나 탈식민적 해방을 위한 이론가들의 노력은 여러 서구중심적인 전통들과 결별하지 못한 채, 혹은 그것들과 연대하면서, 자신들의 세력권을 구축해온 것도 사실- 그 성과를 폄훼하는 것은 아니지만 -이다. 주지하다시피 탈식민주의 비평의 상당수는, 특히 탈식민주의를 주창하거나 제안하는 '화자(話者)' 혹은 '정체성'의 측면에서, 그러한 탈식민주의 이데올로기를 담아내거나 표출하는 '언어(言語)'의 측면에서 그리고 식민적 폐해를 고발함과 동시에 탈식민적 미래를 모색하기 위해 동원하였던 '대항담론(對抗談論)'의 측면에서 어떻게든 서구와의 연을 이어갔다. 본 연구는 피식민사회의 해방을 제안한 여러 탈식민주의 비평들 가운데 이른바 '네그리튀드($N{\acute{e}}gritude$)'운동의 아버지라 불리는 에메 세제르($Aim{\acute{e}}$ $C{\acute{e}}saire$)의 탈식민주의 정치사상을 중심으로 다시 읽기를 추진해볼 것이다. 그것은 세제르의 탈식민주의 정치사상을 '화자', '언어' 그리고 '대항담론'이라는 세 가지 앵글을 통해서 이론적으로 되짚어보는 과정을 의미한다. 이 과정을 통해 세제르와 그의 정치사상을 새롭게 성찰해 볼 수 있는 계기가 되기를 희망해본다.

  • 포스트식민주의는 근자의 글로벌 사회 문화 현상을 설명하고 이해하는 데 중요한 이론적 자원으로 자리잡아 왔다. 문화가 갖는 보편성이나 초월적 진정성을 부정하는 포스트식민주의 이론은 근본주의적 가정을 벗어나 주체와 정체성이 재개념화되는 길을 열어 주며, 지리적 경계를 가로질러 부유하는 디아스포라의 혼종적 문화 경험을 통해 기존의 지배적인 문화적 상상과 사회관계에 대한 담론 질서를 전복시킬 수 있는 가능성을 그려 내기도 한다. 그러나 전 세계 문화의 차이와 다양성을 강조하는 포스트식민주의 서사는 변화와 재조정 과정에 있으나 여전히 강고하게 자리 잡고 있는 중심부와 주변부 국가들 간 불평등한 권력 관계 속에서 특정한 지역민들과 이주민들이 새로운 형태의 피착취 집단으로 구성되고 있는 현실을 제대로 조명하지 못하는 경향이 있다. 이 글의 목적은 포스트식민주의 이론이 전개되고 전유되어 온 과정에 대한 비판적 리뷰를 통해 지금 시기 글로벌 수준에서 발생하고 있는 부정의의 문제들을 보다 비판적으로 성찰할 수 있는 방안을 모색하는 것이다.

마하스웨타 데비와 안젤라 카터의'아시아'읽기 -'전지구적 비교문학'의 가능성을 위하여 (Mahasweta Devi's and Angela Carter's readings of Asia: Toward the Possibility of 'Planetary Comparative Literature')

  • This study explores the possibility of finding intersections of commonness and differences between Mahasweta Devi's short stories, "The Hunt" and "Douloti the Bountiful" and Angela Carter's "Flesh and the Mirror" and "Master" in Fireworks. At appearance, Carter as a writer of Great Britains and Devi as a writer of India in postcolonial period do not seem to share any commonness. This study, however, tried to find "common differences," to quote Chandra Mohanty's terminology, as a basis of solidarity possible between these two different feminist writers. Another concept appropriated in this process of comparing Carter and Devi is Gayatri Spivak's 'planetary comparative literature,' which contends the necessity of critical regional studies and the study of Asian Literature in the study of English literature. Devi and Carter, despite their historical, geopolitical and racial differences, share commonness in depicting Asian or colonized women not only as the oppressed others but also as the subjects who show potential for resistance and independence. Carter portrays Japanese women as the colonized and oppressed others of Japanese society, even though Japan did not have any colonial history. Devi finds in the postcolonial Indian women both the oppressed in the interstice of colonial/postcolonial/patriarchal Indian history and the potential for resistance. Despite some limitation in her understanding of Asia, Carter shows her insight to accept Asia as a true origin of her self-knowledge and performativity of her woman's role. Despite their differences, these two writers use Freud's 'unheimlich' from the feminist point of view, in general. Devi's depiction of the heroine's dead body at the end of the story implicates the possibility of resistance through women's 'uncanny' bodies. Carter converts Freudian and negative connotation of woman's body into positive and comfortable 'home' as a starting point of her self knowledge.

Re-writing World Literature through Juxtaposition: Decolonizing Comparative Literature in Vietnam

  • Postcolonial critics have criticized Comparative Literature for exclusively studying literatures from the non-Western world through Western lenses. In other words, postcolonial criticism asserts that theorists and practitioners of comparative literature have traced the "assistance" of the classic "comparison and contrast" approach to an imperialist discourse, which sustains the superiority of Western cultures and economies. As a countermeasure to reading through the comparative lens, literary theories have offered a "juxtapositional model of comparison" that connects texts across cultures, places, and times. This paper examines practices of Comparative Literature in Vietnam, revealing how the engagement with decolonizing processes leads to a knowledge production that is paradoxically colonial. The paper also analyses implementations of this model in reading select Vietnamese works and highlights how conventional comparisons, largely based on historical influences and reception, maintain the colonial mapping of World Literature, centralizing Western, and more particularly, English Literature and in the process marginalizing the others. Therefore, the practice of juxtaposing Vietnamese literary works with canonical works of the World Literature will provoke dialogues and raise awareness of hitherto marginalized works to an international readership. In this process, the paper considers the contemporary interest of Comparative Literature practice in trans- national, trans-regional, trans-historical, and trans-cultural perspectives.

탈식민주의 관점에서 본 국내 교육과정 관련 비교교육 연구 동향: 「비교교육연구」 학술지에 게재된 논문을 중심으로 (Analysis of Trend in Comparative Education Research Related to Curriculum in the 「Korean Journal of Comparative Education」 from Postcolonial Perspectives)

  • 이 연구의 목적은 "비교교육연구" 학술지에 게재된 논문을 중심으로 국내 교육과정 관련 비교교육 연구의 동향을 검토하고, 그 특징을 탈식민주의 관점에서 비판적으로 고찰하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 이 연구에서는 1995년부터 2016년까지 "비교교육연구"에 게재된 교육과정 관련 논문 61편을 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 우리나라 교육과정 관련 비교교육 연구는 주로 과거 식민 지배를 받았던 일본뿐만 아니라 북미와 유럽 중심의 서구 국가들의 교육과정과 교과서 관련 정책이나 내용을 벤치마킹하는 방식으로 이루어지고 있었다. 또한 다문화 사회로의 변화에도 불구하고 우리나라에 많이 거주하고 있는 외국인들의 국적인 중국과 베트남 등 아시아 국가들에 대한 연구는 찾아보기 어려웠다. 이러한 분석 결과에 기반하여, 이 연구에서는 비교교육 연구 대상국의 확대, 비교교육의 식민성 극복, 비교교육 연구자의 존재론적인 성찰 등이 필요함을 제시하였다.
