In this study, tensile and shear test method for post-installed mechanical anchors embedded in concrete was proposed and the verification test was carried out to evaluate the design strength of anchor.
The paper presents an evaluation of the tensile strength of the expansion anchor that can cause failure in the concrete based on the design of the anchorage. Tests of the heavy-duty anchor and the wedge anchor that are domestically manufactured and installed in plain concrete members are conducted to probe the effects of the embedded depth, concrete strength, and anchors spacing. The design of post-installed steel anchors is presented using the Concrete Capacity Design (CCD) approach. The CCD method is applied to predict the concrete failure load of the expansion anchor in plain concrete under monotonic loading for important applications. The concrete tension capacity of the fastenings with heavy-duty anchors and wedge anchors in plain concrete predicted using the CCD method is compared with the test results. For the CCD method, a normalization coefficient of 9.94 is appropriale for the nominal concrete breakout strength of an anchor or a group of wedge anchors in tension. On the other hand, a normalization coefficient of 11.50 is appropriate for the nominal concrete breakout strength of an anchor or a group of heavy-duty anchors in tension.

Seismic safety of continuous span concrete bridge can be enhanced by distributing a large seismic lateral load to each supporting pier. A new viscoelastic device called Shock Transmission Unit(STU), which is a simple cylinder-piston assembly packed with a so-called silicone putty compound, enables the lateral seismic load to be transmitted to the pier by installation of the device to movable bearings of the bridge. The seismic safety of concrete bridges having the STU depends on not only safety of the bridges globally but also safety of anchor systems which anchors the STU to concrete pier. An experimental investigation is performed to study the behavior of cast-in-place anchor and post-installed anchor subjected to shear load statically and cyclically according to different edge distance, embedment length, and anchor spacing. Finally, the experimental results are compared with results by design methods of ACI and CCD, and results by FEM analysis.

The damage to non-structural elements in buildings has been increasing due to earthquakes. In Korea, post-installed anchors produced overseas have been mainly used for seismic anchorage of non-structural components to structures. Recently, a new cast-in-place concrete insert anchor installed in concrete without drilling has been developed in Korea. In this paper, an experimental study was conducted to evaluate the tensile and shear strengths of the newly developed anchor under monotonic load. The failure modes of the tension specimens were divided into concrete breakout failure and steel failure, and all shear specimens showed steel failure. In both tension and shear, the maximum loads of specimens were greater than the nominal strengths predicted by the concrete design code (KDS 14 20 54). As a result, it is expected that the current code can also be used to calculate the strength of the developed cast-in anchor.
Steel anchor bolts are installed in concrete using a variety of methods. One of the most common methods of anchor bolt installation is using epoxy resin as an infill material injected into the drilled hole to act as a bonding material between the steel bolt and the surrounding concrete. Typical design standards assume uniform stress distribution along the length of the anchor bolt accompanied with single crack leading to pull-out failure. Experimental evidence has shown that the steel anchor bolts fail owing to the multiple failure patterns, hence these design assumptions are not realistic. In this regard, the presented research work details the analytical model that takes into consideration multiple micro cracks in the infill material induced via impact loading. The impact loading from the Schmidt hammer is used to evaluate the bond condition bond condition of anchor bolt and the epoxy material. The added advantage of the presented analytical model is that it is able to take into account the various type of end conditions of the anchor bolts such as bent or U-shaped anchors. Through sensitivity analysis the optimum stiffness and shear strength properties of the epoxy infill material is achieved, which have shown to achieve lower displacement coupled with reduced damage to the surrounding concrete. The accuracy of the presented model is confirmed by comparing the simulated deformational responses with the experimental evidence. From the comparison it was found that the model was successful in simulating the experimental results. The proposed model can be adopted by professionals interested in predicting and controlling the deformational response of anchor bolts.

This paper presents the evaluation of pullout strengths of expansion anchors and wedge anchors that can cause a failure of the concrete on the basis of the design for anchorage. Tests are conducted for heavy-duty anchors and wedge anchors domestically manufactured and to be installed in plain concrete member. The mainly testing parameters reflected the effects of edge distance. Design of post-installed steel anchors is presented by the Concrete Capacity Design(CCD) in European Organization for Technical Approval. This approach is compared to the well-known provisions, ACI 349-90 specification. The use of both methods to predict the concrete failure load of expansion anchor in uncracked concrete under monotonic loading for important applications is compared. In this study, the concrete tension capacity of fastenings with Heavy-duty Anchors and Wedge Anchors in plain concrete predicted by ACI 349-90 and the Concrete Capacity Design method has been compared with the results of tests.

Recently, concrete expansion anchors which are a type of post-installed mechanical anchors are widely used in reinforcement concrete structures. In order to be used in the reinforced concrete structures designed in accordance with ACI 318-19 or ACI 349-13, the structural performance tests of the concrete expansion anchors should be conducted in accordance with ACI 355.2. The effectiveness factor(k) of concrete expansion anchors should be determined through the reference tests and used for the design of anchorage to concrete according to ACI 318-19 or ACI 349-13. In this study, we will look into the method for determining the effectiveness factor(k) of concrete expansion anchors and anchorage design process of concrete expansion anchors by using the effectiveness factor(k) in accordance with ACI 349-19.
Post-tensioning (PT) tendons are commonly used for the assembly of modularized concrete members, and tension is applied to the tendons during construction to facilitate the integrated behavior of the members. However, the tension in a PT tendon decreases over time due to steel corrosion and concrete creep, and consequently, the stress on the anchor head that secures the PT tendon also diminishes. This study proposes an automatic detection system to identify tension reduction in a PT tendon using pulsed-eddy-current (PEC) measurement. An eddy-current sensor is installed on the surface of the steel anchor head. The sensor creates a pulsed excitation to the driving coil and measures the resulting PEC response using the pick-up coil. The basic premise is that the tension reduction of a PT tendon results in stress reduction on the anchor head surface and a change in the PEC intensity measured by the pick-up coil. Thus, PEC measurement is used to detect the reduction of the anchor head stress and consequently the reduction of the PT tendon force below a certain threshold value. The advantages of the proposed PEC-based tension-reduction-detection (PTRD) system are (1) a low-cost (< $ 30), low-power (< 2 Watts) sensor, (2) a short inspection time (< 10 seconds), (3) high reliability and (4) the potential for embedded sensing. A 3.3 m long full-scale monostrand PT tendon was used to evaluate the performance of the proposed PTRD system. The PT tendon was tensioned to 180 kN using a custom universal tensile machine, and the tension was decreased to 0 kN at 20 kN intervals. At each tension, the PEC responses were measured, and tension reduction was successfully detected.
In this paper, the performance of post-installed adhesive bonded anchor embedded in concrete is assessed using numerical simulations. This study aims at studying the influence of parameters on the performance of a chemically bonded anchorage system. Non-linear finite element modelling and simulations are carried out by properly using the material properties and phenomenon. Materials parameters such as characteristic length, fracture energy, damage criteria, tension retention and crack width of concrete and interface characteristics are carefully assigned so as to obtain a most realistic behaviour of the chemical anchor system. The peak strength of two different anchor systems obtained from present numerical studies is validated against experimental results. Furthermore, validated numerical models are used to study the load transferring mechanism and damage progression characteristics of various anchors systems where strength of concrete, strength of epoxy, and geometry and disposition of anchors are the parameters. The process of development of strain in concrete adjacent to the anchor and energy dissipated during the course of damage progression are analysed. Results show that the performance of the considered anchorage system is, though a combined effect of material and geometric parameters, but a clear distinction could be made on the parameters to achieve a desired performance based on strength, slip, strain development or dissipated energy. Inspite the increase in anchor capacity with increase in concrete strength, it brings some undesirable performance as well. Furthermore, the pullout capacity of the chemical anchor system increases with a decrease in disparity among the strength of concrete and epoxy.

Recently, seismic design for anchors is required, which are used for connecting structural members and non-structural and structural members. In this study, pull-out tests on the new expansion anchors which have been developed for cracked concrete. The anchors of 12 mm and 20 mm diameters were tested which are commonly used. Experiments were conducted on non-cracked concrete and cracked concrete to evaluate the seismic performance of the post-installed anchor. The experimental method complies with the specified test protocol (KCI, 2018). Three experimental variables are included in this study: presence of cracks, concrete compressive strength, and effective embedment depth. The strength of the anchors was evaluated with the characteristic capacity K5% determined from the test results incorporated with the safety of 5% fractile. The characteristic capacity K5% of the non-cracked and cracked concrete specified in KDS 14 20 54 are 9.8 and 7.0, respectively. Test results show that all groups except the three groups have higher characteristic capacity K5% than the KDS code and the nominal strengths of the tested anchors can be determined with the obtained characteristic capacity K5%.
