The effect of post-irradiation shelf-aging time on the wear of orthopaedic grade UHMWPE was investigated, and wear results were correlated with the time-dependent microstructural changes of polyethylene after gamma irradiation sterilization. The levels of oxidation and crosslinking in the shelf-aged acetabular liners were examined by FTIR and hot xylene extraction, respectively, and uni-directional repeat pass sliding wear tests were conducted by using a pin-on-disc wear tester. Gamma irradiation sterilization in the air environment caused an increase of oxidation, crosslinking, and wear resistance. With aging, however, oxidation progressed and decreased the level of crosslinking. This resulted in a decrease of wear resistance of UHMWPE that was accompanied with the existence of white bands and brittle cracking.

As the life expectancy increases resulting in the aged society, the post-retirement life became one of the most important concerns of people. The long-term investment vehicles such as retirement savings and pension plans have been introduced to meet such demand of society. This paper examines the impact of asset allocation strategies on the long-term investment performance. Because of the unusually long investment horizon and the compounding effect, a suboptimal asset mix in a retirement plan can be a very costly and irreversible mistake. Instead of relying on anecdotal evidence to evaluate the merits of different allocation strategies, this paper performs various tests including stochastic dominance tests using both actual data and Monte Carlo simulated data that best fit the historical experience. The results indicate 1) the long-term investments perform better than the short-term investments, 2) the optimal asset allocation strategy for the long-term investments should be highly equity dominated.

The effects of transformation temperature and mechanical properties by thermal cycle of CuZnAl shape memory alloy with a small of misch metal and Zr contents were investigated. The addition of misch metal and Zr was very effective for reducing the grain size. After solution treatment, the specimens were post-quench aged or step quenched at $100^{\circ}C$ to $350^{\circ}C$ for variation of Rockwell hardness value. It was found that the Rockwell hareness value was very increased at $200^{\circ}C$ and $250^{\circ}C$. The fracture strength and ductility have been significantly increased with the increase of misch metal conten when tensile tested below $M_f$ temperature. Also, the fracture strength has been more increased in the case of post quench aging treatment than that of the as-quenching treatment. Aging of the $\beta$-phase decreases the $M_s$ temperature, but that of the martensite phase increases the $A_s$ temperature. The change in $A_s$ temperature with post-quench aging can be attributed to recovery of order in the $\beta$phase. The hystersis of transformation temperature ($A_s-M_s$) has an increasing tendency by thermal cycles.

The most widely-used orthopaedic grade polymer bearing liner material, ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), for the total joint arthroplasty degrades after gamma-irradiation sterilization through the progressive oxidation in a shelf and in vivo. Oxidative degradation makes UHMWPE brittle and leads to decrease in mechanical properties. In this study the relationship between post-gamma-irradiation aging time and wear of UHMWPE was investigated. Six retrieved polyethylene hip liners implanted for 3-16 years and then stored in air for 1.5-6.5 years until tests were used. Two types of pin-on-disk wear testing were conducted by the uni-directional repeat pass rotating and by the linear reciprocating stainless steel disks against stationary polyethylene pins under 4Mpa at 1Hz with bovine serum lubrication in ambient environment. Wear of retrieved polyethylene hip liners does not have direct correlation with in vivo or total aging time. Linear reciprocal sliding motion generated more remarkable wear than uni-directional repeat pass sliding motion. It indicates that kinematic motion affects very crucially on the wear of aged UHMWPE having brittle white band region.

Malignant lymphoma in chest wall is a rare form of extranodal variety as occasionally localized tumor. The primary site is suggested from rib or soft tissue, but the incidence in rib is higher than soft tissue. The patient, a male, aged 32, noted a swelling and pain over the left lower posterior chest from 3 months prior to admission. Roentgenograms revealed bony destruction in left 9, & 19th ribs posteriorly and associated chest wall mass which was ill defined uncleared margination. Under diagnosis of malignant tumor, the operation was performed and the tumor mass resected widely with en bloc technique than the fascia lata was grafted at chest wall defect. The histology of specimen was disclosed as malignant lymphoma, non-Hodgkin`s diffuse lymphocytic poorly differentiated form. The radio-and chemotherapy were combined post-operatively and the complete remission is acquired.

To elucidate the effects of a hydroelectric dam construction on annual ring growth of Pinus densiflora, the annual ring widths of 68 trees collected from 7 sites were closely examined. The result was analyzed to ask three special questions first, whether there are real effects of dam construction on the radial growth second, would the magnitude of the effect be different due to two periods of under-construction and post-construction the last, would it be different among age classes. Annual ring growth has been significantly enhanced by the dam construction. Specially, its effect was marked after the construction was finished and the reservoir was filled up with water. There was, however, no remarkable evidence that pine growth would be reduced while the dam was under construction, even though there was a minor decreasing trend. The magnitude of the effect was different among age groups. That is, the changed condition after the construction enhanced relatively the growth of aged trees monre. According to other meterological research since the dam was constructed, the reasons of enhancing pine growth assumed to be the increase of daily temperature, the decreased of daily temperature difference and the increased of rainy days.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of mental practice in increasing accuracy of performance during motor task. Forty healthy students aged 17 years were randomly assigned to two groups. The experimental group(n=20) performed mental practice; the control group(n=20) performed nothing. The task was dotting. No significant change was seen between pre and post test subtest results following mental practice sessions(p>0.05). The experimental group's accuracy improved a little but this was not valuable statistically(p>0.05). We could not prove that mental practice was effective in increasing accuracy of motor task performance.

This study was to know the effects of massage on the back region in order to reduce stress in middle age women. To investigate the effects of massage to the stress levels of middle aged women, we evaluated blood pressure (BP), heart rate variability (HRV), and ultrasonography before and after back massage. The blood pressure after massage was reduced when compared to that of pre-massage. The HRV spectrum analysis was used Frequency domain analysis such as Mean HRV, normalized low frequency (norm LF), norm high frequency (norm HF), and LF/HF ratio. Post-massage BP tended to be low, but not statistical significant. After Massage, the Mean HRV, norm LF, and LF/HF ratio were significantly reduced, while norm HF was significantly increased as compared with pre-massage. The muscle layer and fat layer were significantly diminished by massage. The study was suggested that massage may be an effective treatment for relief of stress.

Neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) often involve the formation of abnormal and toxic protein aggregates, which are thought to be the primary factor in ND occurrence and progression. Aged neurons exhibit marked increases in aggregated protein levels, which can lead to increased cell death in specific brain regions. As no specific drugs/therapies for treating the symptoms or/and progression of NDs are available, obtaining a complete understanding of the mechanism underlying the formation of protein aggregates is needed for designing a novel and efficient removal strategy. Intracellular proteolysis generally involves either the lysosomal or ubiquitin-proteasome system. In this review, we focus on the structure and assembly of the proteasome, proteasome-mediated protein degradation, and the multiple dynamic regulatory mechanisms governing proteasome activity. We also discuss the plausibility of the correlation between changes in proteasome activity and the occurrence of NDs.
