  • The effects of hull-girder vibration on the fatigue strength of a Post-Panamax container ship are discussed in the present paper. Firstly, the short-term sea states are categorized according to the occurrence probability of each sea state. Time histories of hull-girder stress in short-term sea states are calculated by means of a nonlinear simulation code of ship response assuming that the hull-girder is rigid and flexible. Then, the calculated stress peaks are processed by the rainflow counting method, where two different counting procedures are used based on the considerations of crack propagation behaviors. Finally, the fatigue damage in life time of the ship in each categorized short-term sea state is estimated by means of Miner's rule. Based on the calculated results, the effects of hull-girder vibrations on the fatigue damage are clarified by disaggregated damage from short-term sea state.

  • Seakeeping performance of container ships is investigated in view of increase of their size in terms of TEU. Recent appearance of post Panamax class containers resulted in increase of GM, so increase of possibility of resonant motion in waves is expected accordingly. Ship motions of various classes of TEU containers were calculated for various sea states and heading angles in order to assess seakeeping characteristics according to increase of size of the ships. It was found that roll motion of post Panamax containers increase due to resonance as sea state becomes rougher. The possibility of controlling roll motion by changing main particulars such as L, B, and T is investigated as well.

  • The propeller performance has been investigated using a benchmark Duisburg Test Case ship with RANSE. First, the hydrodynamic characteristics of propeller in case of open water have been analyzed by a commercial CFD program and the results are compared with those of experimental data. Later, the flow around the bare hull has been solved and the frictional resistance value and form factor of the ship have been obtained and compared with those of ITTC57 formulation and experimental results for validation. The free surface effect has been ignored. A good agreement has been obtained between the results of RANSE and experiments at both stages. Then the ship - propeller interaction problem was solved by RANSE and the differences in thrust, torque and efficiency of propeller as compared with the open-water numerical results have been discussed.

  • Recently, direct load analysis using ship motion program is required to confirm structural safety for the Post-Panamax class large container carrier. However, there is no exact comparative study data for structural response between 20 and 30 wave load. So, in this paper, to compare the hull girder stress response between 20 versus 3D wave load calculation method, direct load analysis and global F.E analysis have been performed for three kinds of large container vessels using each 20 and 30 wave load calculation program. The results of 2D wave load RAO(Response Amplitude Operator) of each dominant load parameter(vertical, torsional and horizontal moment) are generally bigger than that of 30 results, especially in vertical wave bending moment. And the results of structural analysis based on the equivalent design wave method shows that there is a big difference in view of stress, but the stress distribution is very similar for each wave load case.
