  • This study was conducted to develop the design methodology of longitudinal post tensioning for the post-tensioned concrete pavement (PTCP). The longitudinal stress distribution in the PTCP slab was analyzed when post tensioning was applied. Then, the tensile stress distribution in the PTCP slab due to the environmental and vehicle loads needed for the design was investigated. In addition, prestress losses were calculated considering the losses due to the frictional resistance between the slab and underlying layer and due to various reasons related to tensioning. The tensile stresses used for the design were obtained by adding the stresses from the critical conditions under both the environmental and vehicle loads. The prestress losses were obtained by considering actual field conditions. The effective post tensioning amount was determined by considering the design loads including environmental and vehicle loads and various losses, and the effect of the allowable tensile stress on the post tensioning amount was investigated. The initial stage of the design of the longitudinal post tensioning is to obtain the stresses under the design loads and the required prestress determined by subtracting the allowable tensile stress from the design stress. Then, the optimal tendon spacing and the tensioning amount can be obtained by comparing with the effective tensioning amount including various stress losses.

  • This experimental investigation was conducted to observe the shear strengthening behavior of pre-damaged reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened with externally post-tensioning steel rods. A total of six simply supported beams - two control beams and four post-tensioned beams using external steel rods - were tested to failure in shear. The external steel rods of 18 mm or 28 mm diameter were respectively employed as post-tensioning material. The four post-tensioned beams have a V-shaped profile with a deviator (or saddle pin) located at mid-span, and the post-tensioning system increased the low load-carrying capacity and overcame a little bit of deflection caused by damage. Concretely, the load-carrying capacity and flexural stiffness were respectively increased by about 25~57% and 263~387% due to the post-tensioning when compared with the unstrengthened control beams.

  • This paper shows the test results of continuous reinforced concrete beams with external post-tensioning rods. Six three-span beams were prepared and tested to fail. Three beams were designed to have flexure-dominating behavior and the others to have shear-critical behavior. In each group, one beam without external post-tensioning rods was designated as a control beam and two beams had the external post-tensioning rods of 18 mm or 22 mm diameter. External post-tensioning rods were installed within an interior span of 6000 mm. They show V-shaped configuration because two anchorages were located at the top of interior supports and a saddle pin at mid-span was installed at the bottom of the beam. Test results show that the load and shear capacities of strengthened beams were increased when compared with the control beam. Additionally, the measured shear strength was compared with the strength predicted by ACI 318-11 code equations. The detailed ACI 318-11 equation predicted the measured shear strength and failure location of the continuous beam reasonably well.

  • The external post-tension technique is one of the best strengthening methods for reinforcement and improvement of the various steel structures and substructure components such as beams. In the present work, the load carrying capacity of the post-tensioned tapered steel beams with external shape memory alloy (SMA) tendons are studied. 3D nonlinear finite element method with ABAQUS software is used to determine the effects of the increase in the flexural strength, and the improvement of the load carrying capacity. The effect of the different parameters, such as geometrical characteristics and the post-tension force applied to the tendons are also studied in this research. The results reveal that the external post-tension with SMA tendons in comparison with the steel tendons causes a significant improvement of the loading capacity. According to this, using SMA tendon for the reinforcement of the tapered beams causes a decrease in weight of these structures and as a consequence causes economic benefits for their application. This method can be used extensively for steel beams due to low executive costs and simplicity of the operation for post-tension.

  • A prestressed/precast concrete system was used to build the new Asian Olympic Stadium Project in Pusan, Korea. The stadium(mainly intended for cycle racing) is designed for the 2002 Asian Olympic Games and has a seating capacity of 20,000 spectators plus a few private suites. More than 1300 prestressed/precast components were used and they include single columns, primary beams, cantilever beams, double riser stands, and double tees. Especially, a total of 24 cantilever beams is used on the fourth story for the stands and double tees. These 8m long beams are post-tensioned to prevent cracking, to increase their durability and to serve serviceability by vibration. A cantilever section with cast-in-place topping is 800mm wide and 1500mm deep. Cantilever beams are connected to the column with the corbel by cast-in place concrete. Bonded post-tensioning tendons were assembled at the job site. Dead-end anchorages were installed in the end of cantilever beams and live-end anchorage is the opposite of them. This article presents the geometric layouts, design features and so on.

  • To improve the noise and vibration problems of the existing public parking systems, new floor system was proposed. This system consists of the Sandwich Plate System(SPS), steel beam and post-tensioned steel tendons. To verify the dynamic characteristics such as the natural frequency and damping ratio of the system, the free vibration test was performed. Test results showed that the natural frequency of the SPS composite beam was 23.8Hz and it was increased by 3.8% by installing the post-tensioned tendons. The damping ratio of the specimen with tendons was about 1.64%.

  • The interior portion of Gerber's beam are constructed with post-tensioned segmental composite beams in this study. A precast concrete member which is larger than the limits of domestic transportation regulation in weight, length, and volume is divided into three parts, transported separately, and erected with a composite member by post-tensioning in site. Static flexural loading tests are performed on Gerber's type frames which are consisted with 2.5m overhangs and 5m interior beams composited from three pieces. The connection of overhang to interior composite beam and beam to beam, and flexural performance of interior portion of Gerber's beam are examined thoroughly. All of the tests are ended with a compression failure of the interior composite beams over the design strength of homogeneous beams. The brittle connection failures or tensile failures with the failure of lower strand was not observed in any test frames.

  • In this paper, a design concept of post-tensioned precast bridge piers was proposed to improve seismic behavior of the bridge pier. Mild reinforcing bars are placed continuously along the height of the column. Prestressing tendons are also provided to obtain re-centering capability for seismic events. Arrangement of the axial steels to prevent buckling of rebars at plastic hinge region was suggested and enhanced seismic performance was verified by experiments. Moment-curvature analyses were performed to evaluate the effect of effective prestress on seismic behavior after verifying the calculation method by cyclic tests of the precast columns. A real bridge pier was designed to investigate the seismic performance according to different level of effective prestress. Level of effective prestress showed obvious effect on crushing displacement but negligible effect on lateral displacement at fracture of tendons and reinforcements.

  • Strengthening with externally post-tensioned CFRP strips is more effective in increasing load carrying capacity of existing structures as well as reducing crack width and deflection. This study developed concrete embedded anchorages system for externally post-tensioned CFRP strips, and carried out experimental study to verify anchoring performance quantitatively. Through experimental results, anchoring strength of concrete embedded anchorage were quantified into shear strength of anchor bolt, bearing strength of concrete at the front of anchor plate and bond strength between anchor plate and concrete surface. In addition, overall anchoring performances according to combination of each unit force are examined in this study.
