A 7-year-old, female snow goose (Anser caerulescens hyperboreus) with history of decreased activity for 2 month died in Daejeon Zoo Land in September 2006. At necropsy, granulomatous pneumonia and hepatomegaly with multiple cysts were observed. Small masses were found in the spleen. Microscopically, fibrinous pneumonia distributed in most of the lung lobe with pulmonary edema and congestion. Especially, granulomatous inflammation with numerous multinucleated giant cells was observed around the dilated bronchi. To confirm the diagnosis, acid-fast (Ziehl-Neelsen method) and periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) staining was performed. Acid-fast staining showed red bacterial colony indicating tuberculosis. PAS staining was also positive enough to diagnose aspergillus spp. co-infection that was an opportunistic fungi occurring in immuno-compromised animals. Based on the above results, we confirmed that the case submitted was diagnosed as avian tuberculosis.
To test flavonoids for antibacterial activity against oral micraorganisms, flavonoids, quercetrin and naringenin, were incorporated into two pharmaceutical preparations in the form of tooth paste. Samplees of dental plaque, the msot accused dental deposit which initiates the gingival and periodental diseases, were collected from the teeth surface of ten dental students at one week interval before and after using placebo, followed by two formulae of tooth paste containing 0.1% of quercetrin and naringenin (formulas I and II, respectively). The amount of dental plaque was assessed by the quigley and Hens index. Then plaque samples were subjected to bacteriological examination of Gram stain and plate counts of microorganisms. The results revealed that most of Gram negative cocci and bacilli were highly affected by the two formulae : the number of actinomycetes were decreased after using formula I and disappeared completely by the sue of formula II, while the number of Gram positive streptococci was highly decreased after the treatment with the two formulae. These results indicate a possible use of flavonoids to inhibit dental plaque formation.

Mycobacterium abscessus comprises rapidly growing mycobacteria, and the clinical manifestations of M. abscessus skin infection include papule, nodule, ulcer, scar and mixed form. The cutaneous infections have been reported due to minor trauma, cosmetic therapy, acupuncture and disseminated infection. A 75-year-old man presented with pruritic diffuse various sized erythematous papuloplaques and pustules on the neck and chest for 2 months. The cutaneous lesions were spread around the wound of the shaving on the neck. The histopathologic findings were consistent with abscess showing infiltrations of neutrophils and lymphocytes in the dermis and negative findings were observed on immunohistochemical stain including acid-fast bacilli stain. One month later, mycobacterial culture result showed positive findings, and the pathogen was identified by reversetranscriptase polymerase chain reaction with hybridization. The patient was treated with combination of clarithromycin and ethambutol for 5 months and there is no evidence of recurrence after 6 months of follow-up. Herein, we report a case of M. abscessus cutaneous infection through minor trauma caused by shaving in the elderly.

Objective: Pituitary adenomas are common neurological lesions believed to account for 10% to 15% of all primary brain tumors. There can be diagnostic confusion due to discordance of the preoperative endocrine and the postoperative immunohistochemical diagnosis. In this study, the rate of discordance between preoperative and postoperative findings and their clinical implications were investigated. Methods: From March 2005 to March 2006, 26 patients who underwent surgery for a pituitary adenoma were enrolled in this study. The preoperative pituitary hormone level and postoperative immunohistochemical results were compared and analyzed. Results: The median age of the patients was 38 years [range 15-66 years]. The male to female ratio was 8 to 18. The endocrine evaluation showed 16 hormonally-active and 10 hormonally-inactive adenomas. The immunohistochemical findings showed : 13 prolactin-positive, 1 GH-positive, 1 FSH-positive, 8 pleurihormone-positive and 3 stain-negative adenomas. The percentage of discordance observed between the preoperative endocrine and postoperative immunohistochemical diagnosis was 54%. Nine of 10 endocrine non-functioning adenomas showed : 3 PRL positive, 1 GH positive, 2 PRL+GH positive, 1 TSH+FSH positive, 1 FSH+ACTH+PRL positive and 1 FSH+LH+PRL positive adenomas by immunohistochemistry. Three endocrine PRL+GH secreting adenomas showed 2 PRL positive and 1 FSH+GH positive by immunohistochemistry. One endocrine PRL secreting and 1 GH secreting adenoma showed 1 PRL+ TSH positive and 1 GH+PRL positive by immunohistochemistry, respectively. The diagnosis of the other 12 pituitary adenomas showed concordance. Conclusion : The results of this study showed 54% discordance rate between the preoperative endocrine and postoperative immunohistochemical diagnosis for pituitary adenomas.
Helicobacter suis is a gram negative bacterium and colonizes in porcine stomach. It causes gastric diseases in the stomach and plays a significant role in daily weight gains in pigs. Recent studies about one of potential sources of human gastric diseases. Therefore, this study was conducted to compare histopathological lesions and molecular detection of Helicobacter suis in the pyloric mucosa of porcine stomachs transferred from slaughterhouses, based on gross and histological examinations and a PCR assay. A total 90 stomach samples were investigated to record gastric lesion scores by characteristic gastric lesions, followed by routine H & E and Warthin-Starry silver staining to detect Helicobacter-like organisms. For PCR assay, H. suis specific primers and conditions are used. Sixty-one samples (67.8%) showed gross gastric lesions, of which 38 samples (40.2%) presented grade 1, 12 samples (13.3%) presented grade 2, and 11 samples (12.2%) presented grade 3, respectively. In Warthin-Starry silver stain, Helicobacter-like organisms were detected from 11 samples (12.2%) with 4 samples (4.4%) for grade 0, 5 samples (5.6%) for grade 1, 1 sample (1.1%) for grade 2 and 1 sample (1.1%) for grade 3, respectively. The PCR resulted positive in 37 samples (41.1%) with 14 samples (15.6%) for grade 0, 14 samples (15.6%) for grade 1, 3 samples (3.3%) for grade 2 and 6 samples (6.7%) for grade 3, respectively. Positive samples for both examinations were 5 samples (5.6%). The result suggested that it should be considered as one of factors causing a gastric disease in pigs. Also, it could be acknowledged to research fundamental aspects of Helicobacter-induced gastritis in human as an animal model.

Purpose: Giant cell tumor is the second most common benign neoplasm in upper extremity. Unlike usual chief complaint of painless mass, an atypical case with giant cell tumor presented a distinguishing characteristics of which accompany pain and tenderness and is histologically giant-cell free. Methods: A 31-year-old male patient complained of a rapid growing painful mass on the proximal phalanx of the left ring finger. Under microscopic operation, a $1.6{\times}1.3cm$ sized mass was found to be surrounded by areolar tissue and attached to a tendon sheath, encircling the digital nerve and artery. Diagnostic confirmation was assisted by positive finding in histologic immunohistochemical stain-CD68. Characteristic pathologic finding is an atypical distribution of spindle cells & histiocytes without giant cells in fascicular pattern. Results: Giant cell tumor was carefully removed under microscopic approach, while preserving digital nerve & artery. In postoperative 13th month, the patient presented with a 6mm of static two-point discrimination test, similar to that of the adjacent fingers. Conclusion: We report an atypical case with painful mass on tendon sheath, surrounding the digital nerve and artery that was diagnosed of giant cell tumor, but without giant cells on pathology. This case provides broader understanding of the giant cell tumor that should not only rely its typical findings of the painless mass and positive sign on H&E stain.
Purpose: Large skin defect by various causes, should be covered by autologous skin graft. But, the donor site of autologous skin graft is limited and leaves permanent donor scar and contracture. There have been our trial to engineer artificial skin using allogenic dermis (AlloDerm) with basement membrane. Methods: Dermal and epidermal layer were separated by immersing in dipase solution for 30 minutes, and the separated layers were treated with 0.05% trypsin for 10 minutes. And then each layer was cultivated to fibroblasts and keratinocytes on a culture medium. Fibroblasts were first penetrated into basement membrane of allogenic dermis facing down, then allogenic dermis was flipped over to face up and keratinocytes were transplanted to allogenic dermis. Results: Observing artificial skin fabricated in vitro, we found following: 1) The artificial skin opened in air for 5 days formed epidermal layer. In dermal layer, fibroblast was distributed evenly among all. 2) The artificial skin opened in air for 30 days formed thicker and thicker, and it formed basement membrane, spinous and granular layers. PAS stain to confirm existence of basement membrane showed positive reaction. 3) Cytokeratin 10 stain to confirm the formation of epidermal layer showed positive reaction. 4) The formation of thick keratin, lamellar body and desmosome similar to human skin were observed in result of an electron micrograph. Conclusion: As a result of research, the structure seen in normal skin such as rete ridge, is found in reproduced artificial skin. This type of artificial skin can be used as a useful model for investigating skin disease and for clinical application also.
This study investigated the degree of fracture healing using cathode stimulation of microcurrent, cathode and anode stimulation of High Voltage Pulsed Galvanic Current (HVPGC). Measures were performed by X-ray test and Hematoxylin-Eosin stain and Masson's trichrome stain and osteocalcin-positive immunoreactivity. In the measure of X-ray, microcurrent stimulation group revealed more rapid recovery than the groups of HVPGC's cathode and anode stimulation in bone union degrees. Microcurrent group showed significant difference statistically (p<0.05). However, the groups of HVPGC's cathode and anode stimulation didn't show significant difference statistically(p>0.05). In the histologic examination with Hematoxylin-Eosin and Masson's trichrome, microcurrent stimulation group was observed more proliferation of irregular woven bones than the groups of HVPGC's cathode and anode stimulation. Osteocalcin-positive immunoreactivity was observed more osteoblast, osteocyte, osteoclast, bone matrix than the groups of HVPGC's cathode and anode stimulation. Microcurrent stimulation can be considered an effective way during healing of fresh fracture and it can show more effective method than HVPGC's cathode and anode stimulation in the fracture healing.

The cytochemical characteristics of the hematopoietic cells in blood and bone marrow from 3 clinically healthy dogs were examined using a battery of cytochemical stains. Alkaline phosphotase activity was demonstrated in eosinophilic series and occassionally in progranulocytes. A variety of cells exhibited acid phosphatase activity, but tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase activity was seen only in eosinophilic series. Peroxidase activity was observed in myeloblasts to segmented cells of granulocytic series and in monocytes. ${\alpha}$-naphthyl acetate esterase activity was found in monocytes and occassionally in lymphocytes. Naphthyl-AS-D-chloroacetate esterase marked neutrophilic series from myeloblasts to segmented cells. ${\beta}$-Glucuronidase activity was detected in a variety of cells except the cells of erythrocytic series. Periodic acid Schiff stain-positive granules were demonstrated in the neutrophilic and eosinophilic series from myelocytes to segmented cells and in monocytes and occassionally in lymphocytes. Sudan black B stain-positive granules marked granulocytic series from myeloblasts to segmented tells and monocytes.
A novel glucanhydrolase(DXAMase) from a mutant of Lipomyces starkeyi(KSM 22) has been shown effective in hydrolysis of mutan, reduction of mutan formation by Streptococcus mutans and removal pre-formed sucrose-dependentadherent microbial film and DXAMase has been strongly bound to hydroxyapatitie. These in vitro properties of Lipomyces starkeyi DXAMase are desirable for its application as a dental plaque control agent. This study was performed to determine the adjunctive oral hygiene benefits and safety of dextranase(Lipomyces starkeyi KSM 22 DXAMase)-containing mouthwash when used alongside normal tooth-brushing. This 6-month clinical trial was placebo-controlled double-blind design evaluating 1U/ml dextranase mouthwash and 0.12% chlorhexidine mouthwash. A total 39 systemically healthy subjects, who had moderate levels of plaque and gingivitis were included. At baseline, 1, 3 and 6 months, subjects were scored for plaque accumulation(Turesky modification of Quingley-Hein's plaque index), gingivitis status($L\ddot{o}e$ and Silness gingival index), and tooth stain(Area and severity index system by Lang et al). Additionally, oral mucosal examinations were performed and subjects questioned for adverse symptoms. Two weeks after pre-experiment examinations and a professional prophylaxis, the subjects provided with allocated mousewash and instructed to use 20-ml volumes for 30s twice daily after toothbrushing. All the groups showed significant increase in plaque accumulation since 1 month of experiment. During 6 months' period, the Dextranase mouthwash group showed the least increase in plaque accumulation, compared to the Chlorhexidine mouthwash and placebo groups. As for gingival inflammation, all the groups showed significant increase during 6 months of experiment. The Experimental group(Dextranase mouthwash) also showed the least increase in gingival index score, compared to the Positive control(Chlorhexidine mouthwash)as well as the Negative control(placebo)groups. Whereas the tooth stain was increased significantly in the Positive control group, compared to the baseline score and the Negative controlgroup since 3 months of mouthrinsing. It was significantly increased after 6 months in the Experimental group, still less severe than the Positive control group. As for the oral side effect, the Experimental group showed less tongue accumulation, bad taste, compared to the Positive control group. From these results, mouthrinsing with Lipomyces starkeyi KSM 22 dextranase provided adjunctive benefits to toothbrushing, comparable to 0.12% chlorhexidine mouthwash in inhibition of plaque accumulation and gingival inflammation and local side effects were if anything less frequent and less intense than chlorhexidine, with long-term use of the mouthwash. All data had provided positive evidence for Lipomyces starkeyi KSM 22 dextranase as an antiplaque agent and suggested that further development of dextranase formulations for plaque control are warranted.
