The purpose of this study was to compare and evaluate the upper airway structure between the snorers and asymptomatic control subjects depending on the positional change. Lateral cephalograms in the upright and supine position were taken in 25 female snorers and 20 female asymptomatic control subjects. The length and the area of the soft palate, tongue and airway were measured and evaluated statistically. The results obtained were as follows : 1. The snorers showed longer and higher tongue, narrower and longer airway, inferiorly positioned hyoid bone, longer and broader soft palate and narrower hypopharynx than the control subjects both in the upright and supine position. In addition, the snorers showed broader tongue area and narrower oropharynx area than the control subjects in supine position. 2. Depending on the positional change from upright to supine position, the controls and the snorers showed decreased airway length and superior positioned the hyoid bone. In addition, the snorers showed decreased tongue length and height, airway length and thickness and oropharynx area, but increased tongue area and soft palate area.

The author analyzed the morphologic changes of bone structures from 1256 radiographs of 314 patients with temporomandi.bular joint arthrosis, which were obtained by the oblique-lateral projection and orthopantomography. The interrelations of the bone changes and clinical symptoms were examined. Also, the positional relationships of condylar head, articular fossa and articular eminence in the mouth open and closed state were observed in the patients with bone changes. The results were as follows; 1. The most frequent bone change in the TMJ arthorsis was eburnation of cortical bone (35. 64%) of total cases). Then came bone surface erosion and localized radiolucency (26.18%), marginal proliferation (9.7%) and flattening of articular surface (9.58%) in that order. 2. The most frequent site of bone change was articular eminence (41.70%). The came condylar head (21.09%) and articular fossa (20.73%) in that order. 3. In the patients with bone changes, their clinical symptoms were pain (51.55%), clicking sound during mandibular movement (37.71%) and limited mandibular movement (10.73%). In the patients complaining pain, their radiographs showed eburnation of cortical bone (30.68%), bone surface erosion and localized radiolucency (27.45%) and flattening in the (30.68%), bone surface erosion and localized radiolucency (27.45%) and flattening of articular surface (10.68%). 4. The condylar positional changes in the TMJ arthrosis patients with bone changes were as follows: in the mouth closed !tate, there were the widening of joint space in 624 cases (50.00%), the narrowing of joint space in 543 cases (43.47%) and bone on bone relatioships in 82 cases (6.57%). In the mouth open state, there were forward positioning of the condyle in 332 cases (28.55%), limitation of movenent in 332 cases (28.55%), bone on bone relation- ships in 248 cases (21.31%) and downward positioning of condyle in 217 cases (18.66%). bone on bone relationships in 243 cases (21.32%) and downward positioning of condyle in 217 cases (18.66%). 5. In the TMJ arthrosis patients with bone changes, 1249 cases of abnormal condylar position in the mouth closed state and 1163 cases of abnormal condylar position in the mouth open state could be interpreted. so, for the radiographic interpretation of TMJ arthrosis, the reading of condylar positional changes as well as that of bond changes should be performed and their interrelations should be profoundly considered.
This study was performed to investigate the relationship between vertical dimension during swallowing and speech pattern in patients with temporomandibular disorders. For this study, 33 patients with temporomandibular disorders(TMDs), namely, 17 patients with disc displacement with reduction and 16 patients with disc displacement without reduction, and 30 normal subjects without any signs and symptoms in the masticatory system were selected as the patient group and as the normal group, respectively. Biopak $system^{(R)}$(Bioresearch Inc., Milwaukee, USA) was used for recording of electromyographic(EMG) activity(${\mu}V$) of the anterior temporalis, the superficial masseter, the sternocleidomastoideus and the trapezius insertion muscle during swallowing, and of mandibular positional change with function time(sec.) during swallowing and speech. A sentence of 'Sue is missing her house' was used for observing of speech pattern. Comparison between the two groups and relationship of the mandibular positional change and the function time between during swallowing and during speech were analysed by SPSS windows program. The results of this study were as follows : 1. Mean EMG activity of the trapezius insertion during swallowing was higher in the patient group, and the value was $3.4{\mu}V$ in patients and $2.1{\mu}V$ in normal subjects. 2. Vertica1 dimension(VD) at mandibular rest position before swallowing was slightly higher in the patient group, but VD at swallowing-late stage and at rest position after swallowing were not different between the two groups. 3. Swallowing time were 2.1 sec. in the patient group, and 1.5 sec. in the normal group, and the difference was significant. 4. VD during speech were generally higher in the normal group. In this case, speaking position showing the most difference between the two groups was 'her' position. The distance from habitual intercuspal position to 'her' position was 4.9mm in the patient group, and 6.6mm in the normal group. Speaking time was also longer in the patient group. 5. There were no difference in all observed items between the two categories of the patient group according to reduction of disc displacement. 6. Relationship between the positional changes during swallowing and speech were different between the patient group and the normal group. And in the normal group, VD at rest position before swallowing was negatively correlated with speaking time.
This study investigates how the lunar phases drawing module-applied instruction affects high school students' conceptual changes of the lunar phases. 46 juniors in a high school were given the module instruction on drawing the lunar phases, and then interviews were conducted to verify conceptual changes in subjects' recognition structures. The types of students' misconceptions of the lunar phases change before the instruction were as follows. Type S is that the Earth's shadow covers the moon. Type SR is that one has both misconception of Type S and a scientific concept at the same time according to the positional relationships. The scientific concept means that an observer sees a moon's part which reflects sunlight. Type SB is that the Earth's shadow covers the moon or the moon can be seen or not by the background's brightness according to the positional relationships. The last Type SRB includes all three above-mentioned types, and it explains the lunar phases at each position. As a result of the module-based instruction, 26 out of 36 subjects built up the scientific concept and 10 students did not. 7 out of the 11 Type S and 3 out of the 17 Type SR students did not, either. Especially, type S students did not change their preconception that the phases of moon change were done by the earth's shadow. Here, their preconception is too much strong; as they solve problems, their preconception is more beneficial, comparing to the method which it is presented from the module. This fact supports that it is difficult for students to discard preconception.
Purpose: This study examined the effects of e position change upon reported discomfort and bleeding complications during bed rest following a liver biopsy. Methods: The research design for this study was a non-equivalent control group quasi-experimental design. Twenty-nine participants were assigned to the treatment group and twenty seven participants were in the comparison group. Following the biopsy, the treatment group participants had a position change from the supine without compression for two hours followed by compressive right lateral position for two hours. The comparison group maintained continuously the compressive right lateral position with sandbag for four hours. Results: There were statistically significant differences in reported discomfort between the treatment and comparison groups following the intervention. No significant differences were found in bleeding complications between the two groups. Conclusion: The results of the study suggest that the positional change is an effective nursing intervention in reducing discomfort without risk of bleeding following a liver biopsy.
The Japanese language, as a typical agglutinating language, permits large noun phrases (NP) containing ten or more morphemes. In this paper, we argue that the nature of the NP in Japanese is changing. Our data are drawn from the Balanced Corpus of Contemporary Written Japanese. We conduct a series of apparent-time studies of ongoing changes in complex NPs. We first examine the length of compound nouns, followed by the usage of bound suffixes. We then examine ongoing changes in complex NPs that contain genitive case markers. Finally, we examine noun incorporation. All of our studies show a trend towards shorter, less complex NPs. Furthermore, our results suggest that the usage rate of phrases that modify the noun inside the NP (compound nouns, bound nouns, NPs containing genitive case, noun incorporation) appears to be decreasing over time. On the other hand, the usage rate of modifying material outside of the NP (positional phrases, relative clauses) appears to be increasing over time. We conclude by suggesting that our results reflect a diachronic change of decreasing synthetic morphology and increasing analytic morphology. We end by pointing out the implications of this work on our understanding syntheticity and analyticity.
This study investigates the determinants of strategic positional change. Specifically, the study suggests performance feedback affects to a firm's strategic repositioning. Performance feedback is a concept that a firm decides whether success or not by comparing its performance relative to its aspiration level. Prior studies successively discover diverse behaviors. The study suggests three unexplored relationships between performance gaps and strategic positioning. First, when a firm's performance is below relative to its aspiration level, that firm's strategic position will be deviate from the industry norm. Second, as the degree of industrial density increases, the tendency that a firm's strategic position becomes deviate from the industry norm decreases. Third, when the degree of reference group's performance decreases, the tendency that a firm's strategic position becomes deviate from the industry norm decreases. For empirical analysis, this study examines data of 538 firms that in North America crude petroleum and natural gas industry. The result reveals that the direction of a firm's strategic change is shaped when firms' performance is below relative to aspiration level. Also, this relationship is moderated as industrial density changes or when reference groups' performance decreases. This study contributes to the current literature by explaining how a firms' strategic position is decided. Also, this study reveals that reference groups' performance could affect to organizational choice.
In this study, the artery's compliance model and the pulsation waveform model was proposed to estimate blood pressure without applying HPF (High Pass Filter) on signal measured by the oscillometric method. The method proposed in the study considered two ways of estimating blood pressure. The first method of estimating blood pressure is by comparing and analyzing changes in pulsation waveform's dicrotic notch region during each cardiac period. The second method is by comparing and analyzing morphological changes in the pulsation waveform during each cardiac period, which occur in response to the change in pressure applied on the cuff. To implement these methods, we proposed the compliance model and the pulsation waveform model of the artery based on hemodynamic theory, and then conducted various simulations. The artery model presented in this study only took artery's compliance into account. Then, a pulsation waveform model was suggested, which uses characteristic changes in the pulsation waveform to estimate blood pressure. In addition, characteristic changes were observed in arterial volume by applying artery's pulsation waveform to the compliance model. The pulsation waveform model was suggested to estimate blood pressure using characteristic changes of the pulsation waveform in the arteries. This model was composed of the sum of sine waves and a Fourier's series in combination form up to 10th harmonics components of the sinusoidal waveform. Then characteristic of arterial volume change was observed by inputting pulsation waveform into the compliance model. The characteristic changes were also observed in the pulsation waveform by mapping the arterial volume change in accordance with applied cuff's pressure change to the pulsation waveform's change according to applied pressure changes by cuff. The systolic and diastolic blood pressures were estimated by applying positional change of pulsation waveform's dicrotic notch region.

Objective: The purposes of this study were to measure the palatal soft tissue thickness at popular placement sites of temporary anchorage devices (TADs) by cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and evaluate the age, gender, and positional differences in this parameter. Methods: The study sample consisted of 23 children (10 boys and 13 girls; mean age, $10.87{\pm}1.24$ years; range, 6.7 to 12.6 years) and 27 adults (14 men and 13 women; mean age, $21.35{\pm}1.14$ years; range, 20.0 to 23.8 years). Nine mediolateral and nine anteroposterior intersecting reference lines were drawn on CBCT scans of the 50 subjects, and the resultant measurement areas were designated according to their mediolateral (i.e., lateral, medial, and sutural) and anteroposterior (i.e., anterior, middle, and posterior) positions. Repeated-measures analysis of variance was performed to analyze intragroup and intergroup differences. Results: No significant age and gender differences were found (p = 0.309 and 0.124, respectively). Further, no significant anteroposterior change was observed (p = 0.350). However, the lateral area presented the thickest soft tissue whereas the sutural area had the thinnest soft tissue (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Clinical selection of the placement sites of TADs should be guided by knowledge of the positional variations in the palatal soft tissue thickness in addition to other contributing factors of TAD stability.
Purpose: The I-gel device is Korea's most frequently used airway management method during pre-hospital cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). This study aimed to compare changes in ventilation volume according to the fixation method with a simulated manikin. Methods: We placed I-gel into an advanced life support simulator and compared tape and band fixation conditions. CPR was performed according to the 2020 Korean CPR guidelines, using a mechanical chest compression device and an adult bag. The positional shift of I-gel and the ventilation volume of the simulated manikin were measured after performing CPR for 20 minutes. Five trials were carried out in each setting. Statistical analysis was carried out with SPSS 27.0. P < .05 was considered significant. Results: Positional shift after 20 minutes of CPR was as follows: tape fixation, 7.2 ± 0.2 mm; band fixation, no change, indicating a significant difference between the two groups (p=.003). The mean ventilation volume was tape fixation, 482.63 ± 30.84 mL; band fixation, 544.96 ± 22.98 mL, showing a significant difference (p=.002). Conclusion: When using the I-gel during pre-hospital CPR, using a band-type fixing device with elasticity rather than fixing the tape provides stable and appropriate ventilation by maintaining the fixed position.
