Evaluation of the seismic performance of off-centre bracing system with ductile element in steel frames

  • In order to evaluate the dynamic behavior of passive energy dissipation system, two steps need to be considered for prediction of structural response in the presence of ductile element in an off-centre bracing system. The first is a detailed analysis of the proposed ductile element and the second is the effect of this ductile element on an off-centre bracing system. The use of ductile bracing system is expanding in steel structures in order to increase the force reduction factor. Therefore, regarding the nonlinear behavior of steel material used in an off-centre bracing systems and using ductile element in OBS bracing systems, the seismic evaluation of the mentioned systems seems to be necessary. This paper aims to study linear and nonlinear behavior of steel frames with off-centre bracing system and ductile element, in order to get the best position of these bracing elements. To achieve this purpose, the modeling has been done with ANSYS software. The optimum eccentricity has been obtained by modeling three steel frames with different eccentricities and evaluating the results of them. The analytical results showed that the model OBS-C with 0.3 eccentricities has higher performance among the models.

Estimating Amino Acid Composition of Protein Sequences Using Position-Dependent Similarity Spectrum (위치 종속 유사도 스펙트럼을 이용한 단백질 서열의 아미노산 조성 추정)

  • The amino acid composition of a protein provides basic information for solving many problems in bioinformatics. We propose a new method that uses biologically relevant similarity between amino acids to determine the amino acid composition, where the BOLOSUM matrix is exploited to define a similarity measure between amino acids. Futhermore, to extract more information from a protein sequence than conventional methods for determining amino acid composition, we exploit the concepts of spectral analysis of signals such as radar and speech signals-the concepts of time-dependent analysis, time resolution, and frequency resolution. The proposed method was applied to predict subcellular localization of proteins, and showed significantly improved performance over previous methods for amino acid composition estimation.

Multihop Vehicle-to-Infrastructure Routing Based on the Prediction of Valid Vertices for Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks

  • Multihop data delivery in vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) suffers from the fact that vehicles are highly mobile and inter-vehicle links are frequently disconnected. In such networks, for efficient multihop routing of road safety information (e.g. road accident and emergency message) to the area of interest, reliable communication and fast delivery with minimum delay are mandatory. In this paper, we propose a multihop vehicle-to-infrastructure routing protocol named Vertex-Based Predictive Greedy Routing (VPGR), which predicts a sequence of valid vertices (or junctions) from a source vehicle to fixed infrastructure (or a roadside unit) in the area of interest and, then, forwards data to the fixed infrastructure through the sequence of vertices in urban environments. The well known predictive directional greedy routing mechanism is used for data forwarding phase in VPGR. The proposed VPGR leverages the geographic position, velocity, direction and acceleration of vehicles for both the calculation of a sequence of valid vertices and the predictive directional greedy routing. Simulation results show significant performance improvement compared to conventional routing protocols in terms of packet delivery ratio, end-to-end delay and routing overhead.

Molecular Modeling and Site Directed Mutagenesis of the O-Methyltransferase, SOMT-9 Reveal Amino Acids Important for Its Reaction and Regioselectivity

  • SOMT-9 is an O-methyltransferase that utilizes quercetin to produce 3'-methoxy quercetin. In order to determine which amino acids of SOMT-9 are important for this reaction and its regioselectivity, molecular docking experiments followed by site directed mutagenesis were performed. Molecular modeling and molecular docking experiments identified several amino acid residues involved in metal binding, AdoMet binding, and substrate binding. Site-directed mutagenesis showed that Asp188 is critical for metal binding and that Lys165 assists other metal binding residues in maintaining quercetin in the proper position during the reaction. In addition, Tyr207 was shown to play an important role in the determination of the regioselectivity and Met60 was shown to be involved in formation of the hydrophobic pocket necessary for substrate binding. The molecular modeling and docking experiments discussed in this study could be applicable to future research including prediction of substrate binding and regioselectivity of an enzyme.

Prediction of Amount of Mandibular Set Back with 3 Plain Radiographs in Mandibular Sagittal Split Ramus Osteotomy (하악상행지 시상분할골절단술 시 하악후퇴량의 방사선학적 예측)

  • Purpose: The present study examined the reproducibility of an operation plan by comparing the jaw position of STO with the postoperative mandibular set back measurement in sagittal split ramus osteotomy. Methods: Thirty patients with class III dental and skeletal malocclusion and who were treated with BSSRO were reviewed. Three plain radiographs such as the panoramic view, the lateral cephalogram and the submentovertex view were taken before and after operation. Also, paper surgery for STO and model surgery were used to evaluate the amount of mandibular set back. Results: On the panoramic view, the amount of mandibular set back in STO was similar to the postoperative results of model surgery, but the amount of mandibular set back on the lateral cephalogram was smaller than the postoperative result of model surgery and then the amount of set back on submentovertex view was similar to the postoperative result of model surgery. Conclusion: Precise tracing and paper surgery should be performed for a combined expected STO in order to predict the exact amount of preoperative mandibular set back.

  • This work was undertaken to evaluate the integumental response in lower face to hard tissue changes, and to grope the prediction equation for expected integumental profile changes. Cephalometric headplates of 25 persons consisted of 8 Angle's class 1 maxillary protrusive and 17 Angle's class II division 1 patients whose mean age was 15.2 years were traced, diagramatized, and statistically analyzed. The results were as follows; 1. Upper incisor and lips were retracted and convexity of integumental profile decreased concurrently with decrease of hard tissue procumbency, however soft tissue point A', B', and Pog' did not undergo significant changes after orthodontic treatment. 2. Remarkable increment of upper lip thickness and upper lip height was shown and this was related to upper incisor retraction. The ratio between the amount of upper incisor retraction and the increment o f upper lip thickness was approximately 1.16:1. 3. Moderate correlation of upper lip retraction to upper incisor retraction, and of lower lip retraction to lower incisor movement were arranged, and yet comparatively wide variability from subject to subject was shown. 4. It was possible to predict statistically for horizontal alteration of lip position and change of upper lip angulation ground in orthodontic treatment.

Infrared Signature Analysis of a Ship for Different Atmosphere Temperature and Wind Velocity (대기온도 및 풍속 변화에 따른 함정의 적외선 신호 특성 분석)

  • The spectral radiance received by a remote sensor at a given temperature and wavelength region is consisted of the self-emitted component directly from the object surface, the reflected component of the solar irradiation at the object surface, and the scattered component by the atmosphere without ever reaching the object surface. The IR image of a ship is mainly affected by location, meteorological condition(atmosphere temperature, wind direction and velocity, humidity etc.), atmospheric transmittance, solar position and ship surface temperature etc. Computer simulations for prediction of the IR signatures of ships are very useful to examine the effects of various meteorological conditions. In this paper, we have acquired the IR signature for different meteorological conditions by using two different computer programs. The numerical results show that the IR image contrast as compared to the background sea considering the atmosphere temperature and wind velocity.

  • Triangulation is a typical method to locate or identify the location, which requires inherently at least three pre-recognized reference points. In some cases, owing to out of reachability to communication facility the target node can not reachable always to three base stations. This paper presents a predictive method, which can estimate the location of the moving target node in real time even though the target could not get in touch with all three base stations. The method is based on the PID-controlled Moving Objects Spatio-Temporal Model Algorithm. This can predict the moving direction of the moving target, and then combine with the past target position information to judge accurately the location.

Rotordynamic Design and Analysis of the Rotor-Bearing System of a 500Wh Flywheel Energy Storage Device (플라이휠 에너지 저장장치 회전체계의 동역학적 설계및 해석)

  • A 500Wh class high-speed Flywheel Energy Storage System (FESS) driven by a built-in BLDC motor/generator has been designed, which runs from 30000 to 60000rpm nominally. Due to the motor/generator inside, the flywheel rotor made of composites supported by PM/EM hybrid bearing system has a shape of bell or pendulum and thus requires accurate rotordynamic analysis and prediction of its dynamic behavior to secure the operating reliability. Rotordynamic analyses of the flywheel rotor-bearing system revealed that the bell shaped rotor has two conical rigid-body modes in the system operating range and the first conical mode, of which nodal point lies in the radial EM bearing position, can adversely affect the dynamic response of the rotor at the corresponding critical speed. To eliminate the possibility of wild behavior of the rotor, two guide bearings are adopted at the upper end of the rotor and motor/generator. It was also revealed that the EM bearing stiffness if 0.5~1.0E+6 N/m and damping of 2000 Ns/m are favirable for smooth operation of the system around the 2nd critical speed.

Optimal Layout of Vehicle Pedals Depending on the Types and Positions of Vehicle Pedals (페달 종류 및 위치에 따른 최적 페달 레이아웃 설정)

  • The purpose of this study is to propose an optimal layout for the accelerator and brake pedals in sedan and SUV, and also to compare the pendant-type pedal with organ-type pedal. 12 male subjects participated in the experiment, the subjects were divided into 3 groups according to height percentile(under 50%ile, 50%ile to 75%ile, over 75%ile). Independent variables were seat height (H30), X and Y coordinates of the center of accelerator and brake pedals and the x and y relative distance between two pedals. Dependent variable was subjective ratings for lower body discomfort. The response surface methodology using a central composite design was employed to develop a prediction model for lower body discomfort of each pedal. It is noticeable that the lateral position of the accelerator in all groups was not statistically significant. The optimal locations of both pedals were found to be distinct according to the percentile of subjects. X distance from accelerator to brake of both-type pedals is similar. But Y distance from accelerator to brake of organ-type is less about 2-3cm than that of pedant-type.
