  • Portable ladders are normally used both as an access tool for ascending and descending and as a platform for high place work. Though convenient, such usages make the portable ladders vulnerable to fall accidents. For this reason, many safety systems such as regulations and certifications are implemented to prevent fall accidents of portable ladders. However, nevertheless of those safety systems in Korea, annual death tolls of ladder fall accidents has remained high, and which suggests modification and improvement of the portable ladder related safety systems in Korea. The aim of this study is to propose directions for improving safety systems to effectively prevent fall accidents of portable ladders. To this end, comparative analysis on safety systems implemented in Korea and other countries including Japan, USA and UK are conducted to investigate the problems of Korean safety systems. Based on the analysis, limitations of Korean safety systems to prevent ladder fall accidents are discussed and tasks to overcome the limitations are proposed. Once implemented, the proposed tasks would contribute to prevent ladder fall accidents effectively.

  • General speaker verification systems improve their recognition performances by normalizing log likelihood ratio, using a speaker model and its background speaker model that are required to be verified. So these systems rely heavily on the availability of much speaker independent databases for background speaker model design. This constraint, however, may be a burden in practical and portable devices such as palm-top computers or wireless handsets which place a premium on computations and memory. In this paper, new approach for the GMM-based background model design used in portable speaker verification system is presented when the enrollment data is available. This approach is to modify three parameters of GMM speaker model such as mixture weights, means and covariances along with reduced mixture order. According to the experiment on a 20 speaker population from YOHO database, we found that this method had a promise of effective use in a portable speaker verification system.

  • This paper evaluates the impacts for interference from UWB system, and determines the tolerable UWB power spectral density(PSD) to the new deploying system, which is called a portable internet service in Korea. It also proposes the interference analysis scheme that can evaluate the characteristics of the performance degradation for portable internet service according to the emission power of UWB systems at the specified frequency bands. The proposed scheme includes a multi-rate and data service environments to deal with interference to portable internet service. It is obtained from simulation results that the transmission PSD of UWB systems should be rigidly restricted by less approximately 10 ${\~}$ 20 dB than FCC provisional limit for coexistence between UWB and portable internet service already allocated at 2.3 GHz frequency bands in Korea.

  • This paper proposes an implementable sun tracking algorithm for portable systems powered by alternative energy sources. The proposed system uses a 2-axis tilt sensor and a 3-axis magnetic sensor to measure the orientation and posture of the system, according to a horizon coordinates system, and compensate for tilt effects. Then, through an astronomical calculation, using the present time and position information obtained from GPS sensors, the azimuth and altitude of the sun in that location is calculated and converted to portable sun tracking system coordinates and used to control the A- and C-axes of the system.

  • The aim of this study was to develop a portable electronic nose system for freshness measurement of meats, which could be an alterative of subjective measurements of human nose and time-consuming measurements of conventional gas chromatograph methods. The portable electronic system was o optimized by comparing the measurement sensitivity and hardware efficiency, such as power consumption and dimension reduction throughout two stages of the prototypes. The electronic nose systems were constructed using an array of four different metal oxide semiconductor sensors. Two different configurations of sensor array with dimension were designed and compared the performance respectively. The final prototype of the system showed much improved performance on saving power consumption and dimension reduction without decrease of measurement sensitivity of pork freshness. The results show the potential of constructing a portable electronic system for the measurement of meat quality with high sensitivity and energy efficiency.

  • The existing portable reference equipment for ITS systems performance evaluation has several limitations. First, it is difficult to set up and operate the equipment in the road section with the shoulder width equal to or smaller than 1.5m. Secondly, the crash with a car could lead to severe accident since it is big and heavy. Lastly, it cannot collect data from multiple lanes at a time. In this research the characteristics of the USN-based portable reference equipment developed to overcome shortcomings of the existing portable reference equipment were analyzed qualitatively and its performance level was evaluated through the field test. Consequently, the USN-based portable reference equipment turned out to overcome the operational shortcomings and satisfy the performance level required for the portable reference equipment.

  • In this paper we propose a lock-in detection method for portable sensor systems and demonstrate with the portable detection module that has high sensitivity and robustness against the noise. The simple portable sensor module is manufactured using MCU(Micro Contorl Unit), OPAMP, MOSFET and a pair of infrared sensor. Manufactured sensor module is testified in the noisy environment caused by an external light and an white noise source. Without any type of band pass filters, we recover a signal of 33 $mV_{p-p}$ in 80 $mV_{p-p}$ white noise and get the DR(Dynamic Reserve) of 14 dB.

  • The paper described the nonlinear dynamic motion behavior of a barge equipped with the portable outboard Dynamic Positioning(DP) control system in short-crested waves. The DP system based on the fuzzy theory is applied to control the thrusters to optimally adjust the ship position and heading in waves. In addition to the short-crested waves, the current, wind and nonlinear drifting force are also included in the calculations. The time domain simulations for the six degrees of freedom motions of the barge with the DP system are solved by the $4^{th}$ order Runge-Kutta method. The results show that the position and heading deviations are limited within acceptable ranges based on the present control method. When the dynamic positioning missions are needed, the technique of the alternative portable DP system developed here can serve as a practical tool to assist those ships without equipping with the DP facility.
