  • A video-zoom driven audio-zoom algorithm is proposed to provide audio zooming effects according to the degree of video-zoom. The proposed algorithm is designed based on a super-directive beamformer operating with a 4-channel microphone array in conjunction with a soft masking process that uses the phase differences between microphones. The audio-zoom processed signal is obtained by multiplying the audio gain derived from the video-zoom level by the masked signal. The proposed algorithm is then implemented on a portable digital imaging device with a clock speed of 600 MHz after different levels of optimization, such as algorithmic level, C-code and memory optimization. As a result, the processing time of the proposed audio-zoom algorithm occupies 14.6% or less of the clock speed of the device. The performance evaluation conducted in a semi-anechoic chamber shows that the signals from the front direction can be amplified by approximately 10 dB compared to the other directions.

  • In this paper, we propose the mobile visual inspection information system using DGPS and portable range finder for levee safety inspection. Instead of existing visual inspection management method that is stored hand-written data, this system is designed to manage directly the visual inspection information using mobile devices in the field of levee. And through extracting accurate DGPS coordinates information about damage location of levee, this system is developed to ensure efficiency for the main task arising from the levee site such as inspection, maintenance and reinforcement. Furthermore, when damage has occurred at the point that inspector is not able to approach, this system can record the damage site data correctly, by converting data such as position, orientation and height of the damage point into the World Geodetic System coordinates. The position, orientation and height data was extracted automatically through the DGPS and portable range finder. And by applying the augmented reality method, this system was implemented for inspector to revisit the point of damage easily in order to perform the management, maintenance and reinforcement of the levee later.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel method for authenticating a user's personal-usage using a secure portable storage, so that the user carrying the secure portable storage is able to consume his/her own broadcast programs freely, regardless of the location of the devices. The proposed authentication process is performed by a portable personal-usage authentication device, an access-control module for the portable personal-usage authentication device, and a player integrating the access control module. The portable personal-usage authentication device plays a role of secure storage in which domain authentication information is securely stored, while the access-control module is in charge of accessing the authentication information and, consequently, acquiring a decryption key. The player decrypts the broadcast programs in real time and processes the decrypted media streams. In this Paper, we describe the structure and procedure of the proposed model, and verify its feasibility by implementation.

  • This study investigates how information and communication technology (ICT) can damage intellectual property rights (IPR) in the movie industry. Utilizing a survey questionnaire to gather information about the extensive use of ICT devices, including tablet PCs and smartphones, we demonstrate how digital piracy behavior is associated with various socio-demographic characteristics. Econometrically, since a large number of people do not engage in piracy activities, we adopt a zero-inflated negative binomial model. We find that people with tablet PCs are more likely to engage in the piracy of movies from peer-to-peer (P2P) sites. In particular, when we categorize ICT devices based on whether they are portable and allow downloads, we find that people with devices equipped with both functions are most likely to engage in movie piracy.

  • As the functionality of portable devices arc being enhanced and the performance is being greatly improved, power dissipations of battery driven portable devices are being increased. So, an efficient power management for reducing their power consumption is needed. In this paper, we propose a window-based DVS algorithm for MPEG Player. The proposed algorithm maintains the recently frame information and execution time received from MPEG player in window queue and dynamically adjusts (frequency, voltage) level based on window queue information. Our algorithm can be implemented in the common multimedia player as a module. We employed well-known MPlayer for the measurement of performance. The experimental result shows that the proposed algorithm reduces energy consumption by 56% on maximal performance.

The main purpose of JSR298 is to be able to provide automotive telematics services through use of this specification on embedded devices that are using Java ME platform. The goal is to standardize specification in order to provide automotive telematics services using embedded devices with Java ME as their base platform. This specification defines methods for controlling and obtaining diagnostic information and conditions on various components built in to the vehicle. Therefore, this document will provide specifications required for controlling various equipments built into the vehicles as well as obtaining diagnostic information on these components and vehicle conditions. Automotive components are defined as equipments that are accessible for drivers including airbag, door, window, and brake. This specification is applicable to telematics-specific automotive terminals as well as other various portable devices including cellular phones and PDAs.

  • As mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet PCs become more popular, users are becoming accustomed to consuming a massive amount of multimedia content every day without time or space limitations. From the industry, the need for user satisfaction investigation has consequently emerged. Conventional methods to investigate user satisfaction usually employ user feedback surveys or interviews, which are considered manual, subjective, and inefficient. Therefore, the authors focus on a more objective method of investigating users' brainwaves to measure how much they enjoy their content. Particularly for multimedia content, it is natural that users will be immersed in the played content if they are satisfied with it. In this paper, the authors propose a method of using a portable and dry electroencephalogram (EEG) sensor device to overcome the limitations of the existing conventional methods and to further advance existing EEG-based studies. The proposed method uses a portable EEG sensor device that has a small, dry (i.e., not wet or adhesive), and simple sensor using a single channel, because the authors assume mobile device environments where users consider the features of portability and usability to be important. This paper presents how to measure attention, gauge and compute a score of user's content immersion level after addressing some technical details related to adopting the portable EEG sensor device. Lastly, via an experiment, the authors verified a meaningful correlation between the computed scores and the actual user satisfaction scores.

  • Low power RF devices, such as RFID and Zigbee, are important for ubiquitous sensing. These devices, however, are powered by portable energy sources, such as batteries, which limits their use. To mitigate this problem, this study developed RF energy harvesting with W-CDMA for a low power RF device. Diodes are required with a low turn on voltage because the diode threshold is larger than the received peak voltage of the rectifying antenna (rectenna). Therefore, a Schottky diode HSMS-286 was used. A prototype of RF energy harvesting device showed the maximum gain of 5.8dBi for the W-CDMA signal. The 16 patch antennas were manufactured with a 10 dielectric constant PTFT board. In low power RF devices, the transmitter requires a step-up voltage of 2.5~5V with up to 35 mA. To meet this requirement, the Texas Instruments TPS61220 was used as a low input voltage step-up converter. From the evaluated result, the achievable incident power of the rectenna at 926mV to operate Zigbee can be obtained within a distance of 12m.
