Purpose: In the case of domestic port facilities, port structures that have been in use for a long time have many problems in terms of safety performance and functionality due to the enlargement of ships, increased frequency of use, and the effects of natural disasters due to climate change. A big data analysis method was studied to develop an approximate model that can predict the aging pattern of a port facility based on the maintenance history data of the port facility. Method: In this study, member-level maintenance history data for caisson-type quay walls were collected, defined as big data, and based on the data, a predictive approximation model was derived to estimate the aging pattern and deterioration of the facility at the project level. A state-based aging pattern prediction model generated through Gaussian process (GP) and linear interpolation (SLPT) techniques was proposed, and models suitable for big data utilization were compared and proposed through validation. Result: As a result of examining the suitability of the proposed method, the SLPT method has RMSE of 0.9215 and 0.0648, and the predictive model applied with the SLPT method is considered suitable. Conclusion: Through this study, it is expected that the study of predicting performance degradation of big data-based facilities will become an important system in decision-making regarding maintenance.
This paper presents the results of a study that looks into the different operating structures of terminals in the United States and attempts to find the type of terminal management scheme (All-Comers Common User Facilities, Programmed Common User Facilities, and Program-Tied User Facilities) that is most efficient with regard to crane usage. The paper uses gross and net crane moves per hour to develop an efficiency ratio that is then used to compare terminals. A total of thirty-one terminals were compared in an attempted to find the most efficient management scheme. While the hypothesis that Program-Tied User Facilities are the most efficient operating scheme was accepted, the sample was too small to provide conclusive results pertinent to the terminals in the United States.

River facilities and port structures require a regular inspection and diagnosis due to obsolescence. Currently, most river facilities are undergoing indirect inspection and diagnosis by divers. The underwater inspections are not feasible due to safety issues of divers and restrictions on working hours and environment. To overcome these issues, it is intended to conduct inspections of river facilities using underwater drones. In this research, an underwater ROV (Remote Operated Vehicle) has been developed, which is a kind of drone with propellers. As a key device of this research, an injection device has been attached to the underwater drone to conduct an operation test, a stable operation test of an underwater drone, and a test of attached sensors. The river facility inspection can be carried out optimally using the hovering control of the drone and injection systems. With the developed ROV system, hovering test and injection test have been performed to verify the feasibility of this development.
In the Busan North port redevelopment project, which is the first large scale port redevelopment project in this country, it adopted the national landscape plan for competitiveness of port city. Furthermore, it includes many efforts on landscape formation in the process of improvement of ocean city image and enhancement of its value, which fits for the situation and characteristics of the original nature, history, and culture resources, together with all facilities, structures, symbols, and eco green belt. Firstly this study attempted to analyze the characteristics of Busan landscape, Busan city design plan(2010), especially coloring plan, together with the case study of landscape color plan for foreign countries. From the basis of this analysis, it was proposed a landscape enhancement strategy in the Busan North port redevelopment project through the coloring plan and it is expected that the result would be used for the basic data for other redevelopment project.
The Principle objective of this paper is to introduce a systematic approach to identifying similar container ports in Asia. For this, it analyses data on port facilities, port facility availability, port service level total container throughput, and economic index, by using Multidimentional Scaling (MDS) method. Based on the analysis it identifies five groupings of similar container ports in Asia within which Port comparison can be justifiably made, evaluates a present position of five groupings on the basis of factors used to compare container ports in Asia ; and finally proposes policy implications for operation efficiency of Pusan container port in comparison with Kaohsiung Port. The major implication is that both the Kaosuing and the Pusan port have to strengthen port facility to attract more traffic, and particularly, Pusan Port has to reinforce the number of berth, total length of berth. and yard areas.
Rapid change in the technological environment of marine transportation and the development of the ocean shipping industry have fostered a revolution in the port system. This in turn has caused major changes in the function and use of port in Korea. Aside from this, Mokpo Port, however continues to decline, because the existing port facilities and related subsystem are already obsolete with no chance of regaining operational effectiveness and treatment for proper implementation. Although a few studies have been done on the Mokpo Port, has not been found, any reseach for the analytical approach to the transportation system of it. This paper aims to make an extensive analysis of the physical distribution system in Mokpo Port focusing on the coordination of subsystems such as navigational aids system. The base of introduced simulation tool here is the queueing theory. The overall findings are as follows: 1. Among those vessels called at Mokpo Port in 1994, 556 ships(2,736,669 G/T) are oceangoing while 8155 ships(2,587,217 G/T) are domestic. The average size of oceangoing vessels is 4,922,1 G/T, and the domestic is 317,8 G/T. The average arrival interval and service time of the domestic vessels are 6.0 hours and 24.1 hours respectively marking the berth occupation rate over 100%. Those for oceangoing vessels are 34.5 hours, 120.0 hours and 37.2%. In order to maintainin the berth occupation rate to 70% the capacity considering the 1994 of domestic piers must be extended to 145% and oceangoing vessels must be increased to 165%. 2. The capacity of approaching channel is enough to handle the total traffic volume of 3. Tugs are sufficiently being provided to handle all ships requiring their services 4. The capacity of storage and inland transportation systems are sufficient to handle the throughput and the yard stroage utilization rate of No.1 - No.5 is 4.5% and No.6 is 30% of 1993's. 5. The utilization rate of LLC(Level Looping Crane) and PNT(PNeumaTic) are 2.7% and 18.8%, respectively.
The quantity of container transportation of the world habors is constantly increasing by 8.8 per year until 2011. Present port facilities will not satisfy it. So facility expansion is necessary. Because the processing cost in the harbor becomes to 30% of total transportation expense, major pors inthe world are making an effort in the automation facilities to solve the problems of higher labor costs and indufficient labor and to maximize the efficiency of the work and use of the land. Especially, the automation of the gate, which is the place of cargo's appearance and disappearance, the node which creates the information, is now rising as the important issue. In this study suggest more efficient design for port gate automation. First, calculate scale of gate complex, and compare of 1 step gate and 2 step, and optimal design for automated operation method of gate process.

As the earth's current global warming has caused elevation of sea water temperature, size of storms is foreseen to increase and consequently large damages on port facilities are to be expected. In addition, due to the improved processing efficiency of port cargo volume and increasing necessity for construction of eco-friendly port, demands for various forms of port facilities are anticipated. In this study, two kinds of nondestructive evaluation (NDE) techniques (rebound hardness and ultrasonic pulse velocity methods) are investigated for the effective maintenance of smart green harbor system. A new methodology to estimate the underwater concrete strengths is proposed and its feasibility is verified throughout a series of experimental works.
The logistics industry is growing rapidly with China's economic development in recent years. Particularly, the intermodal freight system is becoming the main issue to reduce the logistic costs under the situation that the quantity of cargo transported between Korea and China is continuously increasing. Shift from road transportation to eco-friendly modes such as rail and coastwise shipping is also increasing. The present study suggests technical aspects related to the implementation of intermodal transport system centered on train ferries between two countries with already employed Chinese infrastructure into consideration. Technical assessment of intermodal train ferry system entails not only the vessels but supporting facilities and technologies as well. Port and rail facilities and operating skills for efficient modal shifting, and their standardization is indispensible to the realization of an intermodal train ferry system between the two countries.
Harbor floating pier is a structure in which one or several floating vessels are connected to have a port function so that ships can be bordered regardless of tide level in places where differences between tidal rocks are severe. There are 233 harbor floating piers in Korea, and 27.5% of harbor floating pier are over 30 years old. Harbor floating piers older than 30 years are potentially at high risk of accidents. However, there is no clear standard for disposal or sale of aging harbor floating pier, and the management regulations on the timing of maintenance inspection and repair are ambiguous. In this study, the AHP model was designed by classifying the problems and improvement factors of harbor floating pier facility operation through interviews with port managers and existing literature studies. The AHP analysis showed that the relative importance of the evaluation factors of the higher class was in the order of improvement of the legal system, improvement of operational management and technical improvement. This study can be used as basic data for improving the operation of Korea harbor floating pier facilities.
