The document "Understanding the Relationship Between Particle Size, Performance, and Pressure" explores the impact of particle size on chromatographic performance and system pressure. The study highlights how smaller particles can improve separation efficiency by providing higher resolution and faster analysis times. However, this comes at the cost of increased backpressure, which can challenge the system's hardware and require higher operating pressures. The document discusses the balance needed between particle size, column dimensions, and system pressure to optimize performance without exceeding the pressure limits of chromatographic systems. It outlines the advantages of using superficially porous particles (SPPs) over fully porous particles (FPPs) in achieving high efficiency with lower backpressure. The study also emphasizes the importance of selecting appropriate column dimensions and flow rates to manage system pressure while maintaining optimal performance. In conclusion, understanding the interplay between particle size, performance, and pressure is crucial for optimizing chromatographic separations, ensuring system longevity, and achieving high-quality analytical results.
Recently, there has been demand for polymeric porous membranes in various fields, such as environmental engineering, pharmaceutics, tissue engineering, drug delivery, biology, and fuel cells. In this study, it is proposed that a polymer particle-based porous membrane can be fabricated using electrospraying and sintering processes. Electrospraying can fabricate polymeric particles with diameters ranging from several micrometers to tens of nanometers without the cumbersome particle aggregation problem. Additionally, the particles can be sintered through thermo-compression under the glass transition temperature. In this study, a polymethyl methacrylate particle-based porous membrane with an average pore size of less than 500 nm is fabricated using the proposed method.
A refined projection-based purely Lagrangian meshfree method is presented towards reliable numerical analysis of fluid flow interactions with saturated/unsaturated porous media of uniform/spatially-varying porosities. The governing equations are reformulated on the basis of two-phase mixture theory with incorporation of volume fraction. These principal equations of mixture are discretized in the context of Incompressible SPH (Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics) method. Associated with the consideration of governing equations of mixture, a new term arises in the source term of PPE (Poisson Pressure Equation), resulting in modified source term. The linear and nonlinear force terms are included in momentum equation to represent the resistance from porous media. Volume increase of fluid particles are taken into consideration on account of the presence of porous media, and hence multi-resolution ISPH framework is also incorporated. The stability and accuracy of the proposed method are thoroughly examined by reproducing several numerical examples including the interactions between fluid flow and saturated/unsaturated porous media of uniform/spatially-varying porosities. The method shows continuous pressure field, smooth variations of particle volumes and regular distributions of particles at the interface between fluid and porous media.
Porous alumina ceramics were fabricated by pseudo-boehmite phydosol-gel process within/without commercial $\alpha$-alumina particles average 1 and 40 micron respectively. The pore characteristics of fired specimens were studied by the measurement of bulk density total porosity thyermal analysis pore volume pore distribution BET area XRD and SEM. with increasing of firing temperature pore volume and BET surface area were decreased and the average pore size was increased to approximately 146$\AA$ upto 80$0^{\circ}C$ by de-watering of [OH] and formation of $\alpha$-alumina. The fired relative density of the alumina-dispersed specimen with average 1 micron particle was increased with the amounts of dispersed particle by bimodal packing theory which is compared to the ones of specimen including of average 40 micron particle. It was confirmed that the percola-tion threshold in porous ceramics with coarser particle (40 micron) has formed between the transformed-alumina from hydrogel and dispersed-alumina of above 50 vol% particle and the total porosity was increased at the threshold point above.
In this paper, the $CF_{4}$ decomposition rate are investigated for a simulated three plasma reactors which are metal particle reactor, spiral wire reactor and reactor with porous dielectric as applied voltage. The $CF_{4}$ decomposition rate by plasma reactor with porous dielectric had a gain of 20~25[%] over that by plasma reactor with spiral wire or metal particle electrode. The $CF_{4}$ decomposition efficiency increases with increasing applied voltage up to the critical voltage for spark formation. The $CF_{4}$ decomposition efficiency of metal particle reactor was about 80[%] at AC 24[kV]. However, decomposition efficiency is more than 90% in case of the reactor with porous dielectric. we think, the reactor with porous dielectric should be much better than other reactors for $CF_{4}$ decomposition.

In this study, the pressure drop behavior of single- and two-phase flows of air and water through the porous beds filled with uniform and non-uniform sized spherical particles was examined. The pressure drop data in the single-phase flow experiments for the uniform particle beds agreed well with the original Ergun correlation. The results from the two-phase flow experiments were analyzed using numerical results based on three types of previous models. In the experiments for the uniform particle beds, the data on the two-phase pressure drop clearly showed the effect of the flow regime transition with a variation in the gas flow rate under stagnant liquid condition. The numerical analyses indicated that the predictability of the previous models for the experimental data relied mainly on the sub-models of the flow regime transitions and interfacial drag. In the experiments for the non-uniform particle beds, the two-phase pressure loss could be predicted well with numerical calculations based on the effective particle diameter. However, the previous models failed to accurately predict the counter-current flooding limit observed in the experiments. Finally, we propose a relation of falling liquid velocity into the particle bed by gravity to appropriately simulate the CCFL phenomenon.
Porous $TiO_2-SiO_2$ particles were synthesized by co-assembly of nanoparticles of $TiO_2$ and $SiO_2$ in evaporating aerosol droplets. Poly styrene latex (PSL) particles were employed as a template of porous particles. Flowrate of dispersion gas, weight ratio of $TiO_2/SiO_2$ and $SiO_2$ concentration in the precursor, and PSL size were chosen as process variables. The morphology, crystal structure, chemical bonding, and pore size distribution were analyzed by FE-SEM, XRD, FT-IR, BET. The morphology of porous $TiO_2-SiO_2$ particles was spherical and the average particle size range were from 1 to $10{\mu}m$. The particles were composed of meso and macro pores. The average particle diameter and pore volume of the as prepared particles were dependant on process variables. It was found that UV-Vis absorption of the porous particles was comparable with pure $TiO_2$ nanoparticles even though $TiO_2/SiO_2$ ratio is low in the porous particles.
This study shows an experimental investigation of a reversible nano colloidal damper, which is statically loaded. The porous matrix is composed from silica gel (labyrinth or central-cavity architecture), coated by organo-silicones substances, in order to achieve a hydrophobic surface. Water is considered as associated lyophobic liquid. Reversible colloidal damper static test rig and the measuring technique of the static hysteresis are described. Influence of the pore and particle diameters, particle architecture and length of the grafted molecule upon the reversible colloidal damper hysteresis is investigated, for distinctive types and mixtures of porous matrices. Variation of the reversible colloidal damper dissipated energy and efficiency with temperature, pressure, is illustrated. As a result, he proposed nano damper is effective one, which can be replaced the conventional damper.
In this study, we numerically simulate the condensational growth of micron-sized particles traveling through a pipe filled with humidified air. Using the finite volume method and Lagrangian particle tracking technique, the mixture of particle-laden flow with moist air in a T-juction pipe is simulated. The condensational growth of particles is calculated by considering the mass transfer of vapor in the air onto the particle surface. The results indicate that the growth rate of the particles increases as the relative humidity of air is higher. Furthermore, the placement of a porous media with low permeability in the pipe could enhance the degree of condensational growth.
Understanding of effects of changes in the particle size of the matrix material on the mullite whisker growth during the production of porous mullite is crucial for better design of new porous ceramics materials in different applications. Commercially, raw materials such as Al2O3/SiO2 and Al(OH)3/SiO2 are used as starting materials, while AlF3 is added to fabricate porous mullite through reaction sintering process. When Al2O3 is used as a starting material, a porous microstructure can be identified, but a more developed needle shaped microstructure is identified in the specimen using Al(OH)3, which has excellent reactivity. The specimen using Al2O3/SiO2 composite powder does not undergo mulliteization even at 1,400 ℃, but the specimen using the Al(OH)3/SiO2 composite powder had already formed complete mullite whiskers from the particle size specimen milled for 3 h at 1,100 ℃. As a result, the change in sintering temperature does not significantly affect formation of microstructures. As the particle size of the matrix materials, Al2O3 and Al(OH)3, decreases, the porosity tends to decrease. In the case of the Al(OH)3/SiO2 composite powder, the highest porosity obtained is 75 % when the particle size passes through a milling time of 3 h. The smaller the particle size of Al(OH)3 is and the more the long/short ratio of the mullite whisker phase decreases, the higher the density becomes.
