Chitin, the natural polymer has been known as harmless and innoxious material to human and has been also known to be biodegradable. Chitosan which was prepared by the deacetylation of chitin, was propionylated to obtain porous bead shaped propionyl chitosan and its possibility as a water-absorbant polymer was investigated. Propionyl chitosan porous bead was synthesized by acylation reaction using emulsion method of acetic acid solution and propionyl chitosan was partially crosslinked using ethyleneglycol diglycidyl ether. Through the experiment varying the moles of propionic anhydride, reaction time and reaction temperature, best results for water-absorption ability was obtained at reaction condition of 5 moles of propionic anhydride, 10 hours of reaction time and $22^{\circ}C$ of reaction temperature. The absorption ability to the distilled water, various salt solutions, artificial urine and artificial blood, absorption time and retention of water of synthesized porous bead were investigated and also mechanical strength after crosslinking was determined.
Several enzyme immobilization methods has been compared for immobilization of pepsin. Carboxymethyl cellulose and diethylaminoethyl cellulose were activated with Hcl and with NaOH, and were used for immobilization of pepsin. Sepharose-4B was activated cyanogen bromide, and was used for immobilization of pepsin. Porous glass beads were derivatized with 3-aminopropyitrlethoxysilane and with succinicanhydride, and were used for immobilization of pepsin. The results abtained were summarized as follow, 1. 10 mg/gr. dry bead and 15mg/gr. dry bead of pepsin were absorbed to CM-cellulose and DEAE-cellulose, 20 mg/gr. dry bead and 27 mg/gr. dry bead were coupled to CM-cellulose and DEAE-cellulose with glutaraldehyde respectively. Enzyme yields were 22% and 24% of soluble pepsin. 2. 16 mg/gr. dry bead of pepsin was attached to cyanogen bromide activated sepharose-4B, 19mg/gr. dry bead was cross linked to the activated bead with glutaraldehyde. Immobilized enzyme activity was 23% of soluble pepsin. 3. 40 mg/gr. dry bead of pepsin was conjugated to the derivatized glass beads. Immobilized enzyme activity was 45% of soluble pepsin.
The geometric design of an implant surface may play an important role in affecting early osseointegration. It is well known that the porous surfaced implant had much benefits for the osseointegration and the early stability of implant. However, the porous surfaced implant had weakness from the transgingival contamitants, and it resulted in alveolar bone loss. The other problem identified with porous surface implant is the loss of physical properties resulting from the bead sintering process. In this study, we developed the new bead coating implant to overcome the disadvantages of porous surfaced implant. Ti-6Al-4V beads were supplied from STARMET (USA). The beads were prepared by a plasma rotating electrode process (PREP) and had a nearly spherical shape with a diameter of 75-150 ${\mu}m$. Two types of titanium implants were supplied by KJ Meditech (Korea). One is an external hexa system (External type) and the other is an internal system with threads (Internal type). The implants were pasted with beads using polyvinylalcohol solution as a binder, and then sintered at 1250 $^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours in vacuum of $10^{-5}$ torr. The resulting porous structure was 400-500 ${\mu}m$ thick and consisted of three to four bead layers bonded to each other and the implant. The pore size was in the range of 50-150 ${\mu}m$ and the porosity was 30-40 % in volume. The aim of this study was to evaluate the osseointegration of the newly developed dental implant. The experimental implants (n=16) were inserted in the unilateral femur of 4 mongrel dogs. All animals were killed at 8 weeks after implantation, and samples were harvested for hitological examination. All bead coated porous implants were successfully osseointegrated with peripheral bone. The average bone-implant contact ratios were 84.6 % (External type) and 81.5 % (Internal type). In the modified Goldner's trichrome staining, new generated mature bones were observed at the implant interface at 8 weeks after implantation. Although, further studies are required, we could conclude that the newly developed vacuum sintered Ti-6Al-4V bead coating implant was strong enough to resist the implant insertion force, and it was easily osseointegrated with peripheral bone.
The photocatalytic reactor was designed to have improved efficiency by enhancing a light intensity of photocatalytic reactor using a reflector coated on the surface at the outer radius of annular shaped photocatalytic reactor. The improved photocatalytic reactor performed to treat waste air containing malodor and VOC with the enhanced light intensity, of which the effect on their removal efficiency was investigated. The intensities of illumination of the improved photocatalytic reactor filled with porous silica-based media and nonporous glass bead media carrying photocatalyst were observed to increase by 28.5% and 30.1%, respectively, compared to those of photocatalytic reactor without any reflector. Using the improved photocatalytic reactor filled with porous silica-based media and nonporous glass bead media carrying photocatalyst, the removal efficiencies were enhanced by 2~3% and insignificantly, respectively. The removal efficiencies of the optimized photocatalytic reactor with reflectors, filled with porous silica-based media carrying photocatalyst, were observed to increase by 26% and 60%, compared to those of photocatalytic reactor (i.e., 19% and 53%), without any reflector, filled with nonporous glass bead media carrying photocatalyst, for hydrogen sulfide and toluene, respectively. The roughness of used reflector surface was measured to be ca. four times as big as that of a commercial mirror. However, their removal efficiencies are expected to be enhanced by increasing an light intensity resulting from lowering the roughness of used reflector coated on the improved photocatalytic reactor in the future.
The effect of photocatalyst-carrying media porosity on the photocatalytic removal efficiency of malodor and VOC of waste air was evaluated when the photocatalytic removal efficiency of porous silica-based media was compared with that of glass bead as control. The amount of photocatalyst coated on the surface of porous silica-based media was observed to be $1,716.3{\mu}g/cm^2$, which was 250% as much as that of nonporous glass bead (control) of $670{\mu}g/cm^2$. The removal efficiencies of hydrogen sulfide and toluene in case of porous silica-based media were observed to be 22% and 82%, respectively, while the removal efficiencies of hydrogen sulfide and toluene in case of nonporous glass bead media were observed to be 19% and 53%, respectively. Therefore, the removal efficiencies of hydrogen sulfide and toluene increased by 16% and 55%, respectively, when the removal efficiencies of porous silica-based media were compared with those of nonporous glass bead media. Thus the increment ratio of the removal efficiency of toluene was observed to be 3.4 times higher than that of hydrogen sulfide.

Freezing of saturated porous media contained in a rectangular cavity has been studied experimentally. Water and different diameter glass beads consitituted the liquid and porous media. Solidification front shape, the effects of bead diameter and initial liquid temperature was investigated. When the hot wall temperature was below $4^{\circ}C$, the freezing rate was higher at the top than at the bottom due to the density inversion, but with increasing the hot wall temperature the freezing rate at the top was effected by the liquid temperature and was lower than at the bottom. With increasing the bead diameter, the difference of freezing rate between top and bottom was increased and depends on thermal conductivity. When the liquid temperature was low in the beginning, the freezing rate was high, but with increasing the time almost the same with those of high temperature liquid.

Empty cross-linked chitosan microcapsule was prepared by chemical cross-linking reaction using glutaraldehyde(GA). Chitosan bead was also prepared by coacervation method using sodium hydroxide. The technique involves the formation of a chitosan solution in the discontinuous phase of W/O emulsion. The factors influencing the emulsion stability have been examined to establish optimum conditions Chitosan microcapsules were useful for encapsulation of biological materials, and chitosan bead was useful to prepare the biologically active peptide-bound polysaccharide. As a model compound Gly-His-Lys, cell growth factor, was successfully coupled to chitosan bead.

Porous resin beads of Poly(styrene-co-divinylbenzene) have been prepared by suspension polymerization. The bead could be made porous in the region above 30wt% of the crosslinking agent(divinylbenzene ) and the porogenic agent(toluene), respectively. The specific surface area of porous beads increased with increasing the concentrations of divinylbenzene and toluene. The specific surface area of the porous resin bead decreased, when sulfonated with concentrated sulfuric acid. The catalytic activity of sulfonated resin catalyses increased with increasing the degree of crosslinking in the liquid-phase reesterification of ethyl acetate with 1-propanol. The adsorbed quantity of sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate in an aqueous solution also increased with increasing surface area of porous resins.

We have developed a high performance powder, which has a quenching efficacy not only for short-chain fatty acids and amines, but also for vinyl ketones (l-octen-3-one, cis-l,5-octadien-3-one), newly found as other key compounds in axillary malodor. By investigating various powders known to have a quenching efficacy, we finally developed a highly porous silica bead containing magnesium oxide. We found that the superior deodorant effect performed by this powder was the result of multiple effects due to both an excellent physical adsorption capability from its high porosity and a specific adsorption of vinyl ketones by magnesium in the powder. An antiperspirant formulation containing both this powder and a Morus alba extract showed good efficacy as a deodorant.

Sialic acid, which is contained in about 60-160 mg/kg in the edible bird's nest (EBN), is known to facilitate in the proper formation of synapses and improve memory function. The objective of this study is to extract effectively the sialic acid from edible bird's nest using affinity bead technology (ABT). After preparing the non-polar polymeric bead "KJM-278-28A" having a porous network structure, and then desorbed sialic acid was concentrated and dried. The analysis of the physicochemical properties of bead "KJM-278-28A" showed that the particle size was 400-700 ㎛, the moisture holding capacity was 67-70%, the surface area (BET) was 705-900 ㎡/g, and the average pore diameter 70-87 Å. The adsorption capacity of the bead "KJM-278-28A" for sialic acid was shown a strong physical force to bind sialic acid to the bead surface of 400 mg/L. In addition, as a result of analyzing the adsorption and desorption effects of sialic acid on water, ethanol, and 10% ethanol on the bead, it was confirmed that desorption effectively occurs from the beads when only ethanol is used. As a result of HPLC measurement of the separated sialic acid solution, a total of four sialic acid peaks of N-acetyl-neuraminic acid (Neu5Ac), α,β-anomer of Neu5Ac and N-glycoly-neuraminic acid were identified. Through these results, it was confirmed that it is possible to separate sialic acid from EBN extract with efficient and high yield when using ABT.
