  • Pure silicalite membranes were prepared on porous sintered stainless steel and aluinina supports. The silicalite membrane showed the high alcohol permselectivity, indicating no existence of cracks within the membrane. The high alcohol permselectivity is attributable to the high hydrophobic character of silicalite.

  • The permeation of insulin was conducted through glucose oxidase(GOD) immobilized composite membrane composed of poly(vinyl akohol)/chitosan blend and porous polyamide membrane. The permeation coefficient of insulin through GOD-immobilized membrane was in the order of $10^{-6}{\sim}10^{-7}\textrm{cm}^3cm/\textrm{cm}^2sec$. The sensitivity of the composite membrane to the glucose concentration was high in a low glucose concentration resulting from the oxygen depletion from the membrane. The permeation of insulin through composite membrane made of PVA/chitosan and porous polyamide membrane was changed by pH and glucose concentration. The permeability was progressively increasing with the glucose concentration at least up to 500mg%.

  • A dense palladium-nikel (Pd-Ni) alloy composite membrane has been fabricated on microporous nickel support mixed with submicron/micron nickel powder instead of mesoporous stainless steel support. Plasma treatment process is introduced as pre-treatment process instead of HCI activation. Pd-Ni alloy composite membrane prepared by electro plating was fairly a uniform and dense surface morphology. The membrane was characterized by permeation experiments with hydrogen and nitrogen gases at temperature 773 K and pressure 2.2 psi. The results showed that hydrogen ($H_2$) permeance was 27 ml/$\textrm{cm}^2$ㆍatmㆍmin and hydrogen/ nitrogen ($_H2$$N_2$) selectivity was 8 at 773 K.

  • In this study, the Fe3O4/porous carbon composite was synthesized by hydrothermal method for removal of Cu2+ ions and the characteristic of Cu2+ ions removal was performed. The Fe3O4/porous carbon composite was investigated via using SEM, XRD for its morphology and structure. BET analysis was conducted to conform a specific area and pore size distribution of the composite. For the investigation of the performance for removal of Cu2+ ions in the solution, UV-vis spectrometer was used. It suggests that a synergetic effect between magnetic Fe3O4 and porous carbon shows an improvement for removal of Cu2+ ions.

  • When anodizing the Al in the acid electrolyte, it is well known that the parallel pores grow continuously perpendicular to the surface. This fact can be used for the manufacturing of the porous membrane, if thc pores pass through the anodized foil. Anodizing both surfaces of the Al-foil spontaneously in 20$^{\circ}C$, 2% oxalic acid under tile potentiostatic condition, it is found that the harrier layer remaining in the midst of the foil finally disappears and thc pores pass through the foil. And examined the porous structure change when the voltage is changed during the anodizing treatment. From the result, it is revealed that the new pores and cell grow, adjusting themselves to the final voltage. The characteristic of the porous membrane is greatly dependent upon the diameter of the pore and the cell. So studied the relationship between the voltage and the diameter of the pore and the cell quantitatively with the aid of field-assisted dissolution concept. And derived the following two equation, Pi = 8.32Vi, Ci = 26.80Vi. These equations are in good accord with the experimental data above 30V, but do not accord nuder 30V.

  • We prepared monodispersed spherical silica microgels by controlling various conditions of emulsification procedure using a lab-scale membrane emulsification system equipped with SPG (Shirasu porous glass) porous membrane having pore size of $1.5{\mu}m$. We determined the effects of process parameters of membrane emulsification (ratio of dispersed phase to continuous phase, sodium silicate concentration, emulsifier concentration, dispersed phase pressure, stirring speed) on the mean size and size distribution of silica microgels. The increase of the ratio of dispersed phase to continuous phase, dispersed phase pressure and sodium silicate concentration led to the increase in the mean size of microgels. On the contrary, the increase in emulsifier concentration and stirring speed of the continuous phase caused the reduction of the mean size of microgels. Through controlling these parameters, monodisperse spherical silica microgels with about $6{\mu}m$ of the mean size were finally prepared.

  • A Pd-based hydrogen membranes for hydrogen purification and separation need high hydrogen perm-selectivity. The surface roughness of the support is important to coat the pinholes free and thin-film membrane over it. Also, The pinholes drastically decreased the hydrogen perm-selectivity of the Pd-based composite membrane. In order to remove the pinholes, we introduced various surface pre-treatment such as alumina powder packing, nickel electro-plating and micro-polishing pre-treatment. Especially, the micro-polishing pretreatment was very effective in roughness leveling off the surface of the porous nickel support, and it almost completely plugged the pores. Fine Ni particles filled surface pinholes with could form open structure at the interface of Pd alloy coating and Ni support by their diffusion to the membrane and resintering. In this study, a $4{\mu}m$ surface pore-free Pd-Cu-Ni ternary alloy membrane on a porous nickel substrate was successfully prepared by micro-polishing, high temperature sputtering and Cu-reflow process. And $H_2$ permeation and $N_2$ leak tests showed that the Pd-Cu-Ni ternary alloy hydrogen membrane achieved both high permeability of $13.2ml{\cdot}cm^{-2}{\cdot}min^{-1}{\cdot}atm^{-1}$ permation flux and infinite selectivity.

  • In this study, we prepared porous cation exchange membrane using polystyrene such as, EPS (expanded polystyrene), SAN (styrene acrylonitrile copolymer) and HIPS (high impactive polystyrene). These polystyrenes were sulfonated by acetyl sulfate to make porous cation exchange membrane such as, SEPS, SSAN, SHIPS. SEM was employed to confirm porous structure of membrane, and IR spectroscopy was used to confirm sulfonation rate of ion exchange membrane. Water and methanol content were also increased with amount of sulfuric acid in reactants. SSAN-20 showed the highest value in water and methanol content. Fixed ion concentration and conductivity was also increased with an amount of sulfuric acid in reactants. Methanol permeability for SEPS-20, SSAN-20, SHIPS-20 was found to be $1.326\;{\times}\;10^{-5}\;cm^2/s$, $1.527\;{\times}\;10^{-5}\;cm^2/s$ and $1.096\;{\times}\;10^{-5}\;cm^2/s$ respectively. From the result of electrodialysis experiment in 0.03 M $Pb(NO_3)_2$ aqueous solution, anion exclusion and cation selection effects were confirmed.
