Surface Flame Patterns and Stability Characteristics of Premixed Burner System for Fuel Reformers (개질기용 예혼합 버너의 화염형태 및 안정성 특성)

  • Fuel processing systems which convert fuel into rich gas (such as stream reforming, partial oxidation, autothermal reforming) need high temperature environment ($600{\sim}1,000^{\circ}$). Generally, anode-off gas or mixture of anode-off gas and LNG is used as input gas of fuel reformer. In order to make efficient and low emission burner system for fuel reformer, it is necessary to elucidate the combustion and emission characteristic of fuel reformer burner. The purpose of this study is to develop a porous premixed flat ceramic burner that can be used for 1~5 kW fuel cell reformer. Ceramic burner experiments using natural gas, hydrogen gas, anode off gas, mixture of natural gas & anode off gas were carried out respectively to investigate the flame characteristics by heating capacity and equivalence ratio. Results show that the stable flat flames can be established for natural gas, hydrogen gas, anode off gas and mixture of natural gas & anode off gas as reformer fuel in the porous ceramic burner. For all of fuels, their burning velocities become smaller as the equivalence ratio goes to the lean mixture ratio, and a lift-off occurs at lean limit. Flame length in hydrogen and anode off gas became longer with increasing the heat capacity. In particular, the blue surface flame is found to be very stable at a very lean equivalence ratio at heat capacity and different fuels. The exhausted NOx and CO measurement shows that the blue surface flame represents the lowest NOx and CO emissions since it remains very stable at a lean equivalence ratio.

  • The surface flames in perforated ceramic burner are experimentally characterized to investigate the effects of equivalence ratio and heating rate. The results show that the surface flames are classified into green, red radiant and blue surface flame as the decrease of equivalence ratio. Each flame is maintained very stable at the specified equivalence ratio and represents the same flame characteristics at any orientation of ceramic burner. Particularly the blue surface flame is found to be very stable at very lean equivalence ratio at 7000kcal/hr to 20000kcal/hr heating rates. And the exhausted NOx measurement shows that blue surface flame represents the lowest NOx emission regardless of the location of burner since it sustains very stable at lean mixture ratio.

Nitric Oxide and Carbon Monoxide Emission from a Premixed Flame Stabilized in a Porous Ceramic Matrix Burner (세라믹 매트릭스 버너에 형성된 예혼합 화염의 NOx 및 CO 배출특성)

  • Emission characteristics of nitric oxides and carbon monoxide from a porous media combustor has been experiment studied. The relationship between the change of flame shape and emission has also been examined. As the equivalence ratio decreases, the flame shape on the ceramic matrix plate changes from a diffusion flame, R(radiant)-type flame, to B(Blue)-type flame. With large fuel flow rate, R-type flame turns to be two dimensional R-II type flame around the equivalence of 0.7. Carbon monoxide emission increases very rapid with decreasing equivalence ratio. It changes a lot from some 10 ppm to 100-10,000 ppm with the change of flame type from R-I to R-II type. Nitric oxide emission from the premixed burner is less than 25 ppm over all range of fuel flow rate, which is less than 20% of NOx emission from conventional gas burners.

  • The purpose of this study is investigated on the combustion and the thermal characteristics of porous media burners which are many using for a condensing boiler recently. In addition, results of this study will be used the fundamental information to decide the burner type which will be applied to the future development of EGR(Exhaust gas recirculation) condensing boiler. Two flat type of burners made of a the metal fiber(MF) and the ceramic(CM) were selected and examined, experimentally. As experimental results, the emitted CO concentration of CM was higher than that of MF. However, the NO concentration of MF was higher than that of CM. The efficiencies of both burners were increased as increasing the burner capacity. While the efficiency of MF was higher than that of CM, regardless of the burner capacity. In the experimental range, MF is appropriated for the burner material and 0.8 of equivalence ratio is an optimal operation condition, regarding of the proportional control, the thermal efficiency and emitted NO and CO concentration based on the regulations of KS B standard and EN 677 standard.

  • An experimental study was performed to investigate the characteristics of chemiluminescence in a radiant burner, varying the excess air ratio from 0.91 to 1.67 at firing rate 80.5 to 134.2 kW/m2 on $OH^*,\;CH^*,\;{C_2}^*$ in LNG-Air premixed flames. The signals from electronically excited states of $OH^*,\;CH^*,\;{C_2}^*$ were detected using a Intensified Couple Charged Detector (ICCD) camera. The measurements of exhausted emission were made to investigate the correlation between chemiluminescence and emissions. The chemiluminescence intensity was increased with increase of firing rate like characteristics of $NO_x$ emission. $NO_x$ also increased with increase of firing rate and excess air ratio. It is found that offset of firing rate is more dominant excess air ratio $NO_x$ emission. The maximum chemiluminescence intensity occurs near the stoichiometric excess air ratio or lean conditions in case of high firing rate and the maximum intensity occurs rather than rich conditions in case of relatively low firing rate. Amount of $NO_x$ emission is maximum at near stoichiometric excess air ratio, which is chemiluminescence intensity is maximum.

  • An experimental study was performed to investigate the effects of mixing quality, inlet pressure, nozzle diameter on CO emission and radiation characteristics in porous ceramic fiber radiant burners. Observations of combustion characteristics occurring inside the burner system which was insulated fiber mat, were investigated by measuring temperature, CO emission and radiation characteristics. Combustion was achieved at the firing rate of $88{\sim}99$ kcal/hr, inlet pressure of $100{\sim}250$mm$H_2O$. CO emissions were found to be strongly dependent on the operating conditions. There was a tendency that CO concentration increased as the firing rate increases. The reason for rise of CO concentration is that it becomes the relatively rich condition. The fiber burner exhibit significant both spectral intensity peaks in the bands at 2.5${\mu}m$ and 4.0${\mu}m$ relatively, There is a small difference in the variable mixing tube. However spectral intensity increased with the firing rate.

  • In this study, the experimental studies were conducted to analyzing characteristics of combustion and flame stabilizing according to with and without water tube in boiler. The burner has consisted of SiC foam where has the location of submerged flame between a ceramic board acting as flash-back arrestor. Porous burner is also insulated to minimize heat loss in the radial direction. In the condition of fixed equivalence ratio, the flame mode was divided into three stability zones by the flow rate. The main factor for blow-off and flash-back depends on mixture flow rate. Consequently, the case of burner with water-tube has higher NOx emissions than without case. This result explains that the presence of water-tube makes the heat loss resistant to ambient temperature with increasing of NOx. This tendency was proved by predicting the relationship between O2 emission and NO production rate, and by analysing temperature profiles.
