Refering to Sundry Records about Cause, Process and Treatment of Jungkijeung(Zhongqizheng) (중기(中氣)의 병인병기(病因病機) 및 치료(治療)에 관한 문헌고찰(文獻考察))

  • Object: Show the treatment about Jungkijeung (Zhongqizheng) by distinguishing Apoplexy(Zhongfeng), yujungfung(Leizhongfeng), gualjung(Juezheng), and observation of cause, process, quality. Method: Researched definition, cause, process, treatment and herb med through chinese & korean medical publication refered to Jungkijeung(Zhongqizheng) Result: 1. Jungkijeung(Zhongqizheng) is simmilar to Apoplexy(Zhongfeng) that spiritual shock occurred to syncope, dysarthria, trismus, quadriplegia. But the symptom of Jungkijeung(Zhongqizheng) is coldness, no-sputum, sink-pluse; that of Apoplexy(Zhongfeng) is warmness, much secretion, float-pulse. 2. Jungkijeung(Zhongqizheng) is mainly caused by the serious anger and the reverse movement of spints by the seven emotional factor. The process of Jungkijeung(Zhongqizheng) are "Fire and Fever(huore)" "Weatness and sputum(shitan)", and most importantly "Weakness of vital-qi(qixi)" 3. The treatment of Jungkijeung(Zhongqizheng) is adjustment and circulation of jiao. In early stage, don't use of Apoplexial- Med. 4. As following herb-med are used for Jungkijeung (Zhongqizheng). Sohaphang-won(Suhexiangyan) is 18 times; Palmisungi-san(Baweishunqisan) is 13 times; Kang-tang(Jiangtang) is 8 times: Mokhyangsungi san(Muxiangshunqisan) is 6 times. 5. Atractylodes macrocephala KOIDZ(Baishu) is used for 40 times most frequently, Saussurea lappa CLARKE (Muxiang), Cyperus rotundus L (Xiangfuzi), Citrus unshiu MARCOR(Chenpi), Glycyrrhiza uralensis FISCH (Gancao), poria cocos WOLF (Furing), Panax ginseng NESS (Renshen) etc are orderly used. 6. Acupoints same as GV20(Baihui), LI4(Hegu), Liv2(Xingjian), 12 Junghyul(Jingxue) is used for acupunture. And CV8(Shenque), CV4(Guanyan) is used for moxibustion. Conclusion: As Jungkijeung(Zhangqizheng) is differed from Apoplexy(Zhongfeng), yujungfung(Leizhongfeng), gualjung(Juezheng), we must also cure Jungkijeung (Zhongqizheng) to the other disease. It is need to distinguishment Jungkijeung(Zhongqizheng) from neurotic, psychotic disease, though similar to conversation neurosis.

Quality Characteristics of Jeolpyun Containing Baekbokryung (White Poria cocos Wolf) Powder Based on Water Content (수분 첨가량을 달리한 백복령 가루 첨가 절편의 품질특성)

  • The purpose of this study was to acquire basic data on Jeolpyun added with Baekbokryung powder to aid the product's commercial production. Initially a sensory test was performed with consumers to the identify preferred amount of Baekbokryung powder to add according to age. The results revealed that those in their 20's to 40's preferred the 3% treatment, while those 50 and older preferred the 5% treatment. Next, the optimum water content of Jeolpyun was chosen by examining select quality characteristics in samples containing 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40% water while the amounts of added Baekbokryung powder were fixed at 3% and 5%, respectively, as based on the sensory panel results. For the color characteristics of the samples, lightness(L), redness(a) and yellowness(b) values increased in proportion to the added amount of water regardless of the Baekbokryung level. However, the ${\Delta}E$ values of the samples increased with storage time along with the darkening of their surfaces. The samples with high moisture contents, such as the 35 and 40% treatments, maintained a relatively softer texture during 24 hr of storage as compared to the other samples. Also noted was an initial slow increase in hardness up to 12 hr of storage, and then accelerated hardening until 24 hours of storage. Throughout the storage period, th 30% treatment received low scores: the 40% treatment was especially disliked in terms of mashing of the product due to the excess water. Overall, for a soft and moderately chewy product, the optimum Baekbokryung powder and moisture level for Jeolpyuns were suggested as 3 to 5% ranges and 35% respectively. Ultimately, the results of this research will contribute to the possible commercialization of a Jeolpyuns product that contains added Baekbokryung.

  • After evaluation of antithrombotic effect of 40 herbs on platelet aggregation induced by ADP(Adenosine diphosphate), these results were obtained as follows: 1. Crude drugs exerting over 30 % of in Chinemys reevesii (Gray)hibition on platelet aggregation induced by ADP were Ganoderma japonicum (Fr.) Lloyd., Panax ginseng C. A. Mey., Gastrodia elata Bl., Thea sinensis, Chinemys reevesii (Gray), Cuscuta chinensis Lam., Cervus nippon Temminck., Biota orientalis (L.) Endl., Coriolus versicolor, Cinnamomum cassia Presl., Sophora flavescens Ait., Amomum villosum Lour., Carthamus tinctorius L., Rubus chingii Hu., Poria cocos (Schw.) Wolf., Laminana japonica Aresch., Ligustrum lucidum Ait., Angelica sineusis (Oliv.), Cyperus rotundas L., Ginkgo biloba L., Zingiber officinale Rosc., Prunus persica (L.) Batsch., Schizandra chinensis (Turcz.) Baill. and Plantago asiatica L.. 2. Of crude drugs having showed over 50% of inhibitory effect on platelet aggregation, at the concentration of $100{\mu}g/m{\ell}$, the inhibitory rates were 82.2% in Ganoderma japonicum (Fr.) Lloyd., 55% in Panax ginseng C. A. Mey., 50.8% in Gastrodia elata Bl., while at the concentration of $200{\mu}g/m{\ell}$, antithrombotic rates were 89.4% in Ganoderma japonicum (Fr.) Lloyd., 59.2% in Panax ginseng C. A. Mey., 57.9% in Thea sinensis, 52.7% in Gastrodia elata Bl.. These results suggest that the study sholuld be necessary on antithrombotic effect of solvent fractions of Ganoderma japonicum (Fr.) Lloyd., Panax ginseng C. A. Mey., Gastrodia elaha B1. and Thea sinensis and isolation of effective compound from above drugs.

The Origin, Changes and Compositive Principles of Jeoryoungchajeonja-tang (저령차전자탕(猪苓車前子湯)의 기원(基源), 변천과정(變遷過程) 및 구조원리(構成原理))

  • Objectives This paper investigates the origin, the progressive changes and the constructive principles of Jeoryoungchajeonja-tang(猪苓車前子湯).Methods Jeoryoungchajeonja-tang and other related prescriptions were analyzed in terms of their pathological indications, based on previous literature including 『Sanghannon(傷寒論)』, 『Keumkuaeyoryak(金匱要略)』, 『Donguibogam(東醫寶鑑)』, 『Donguisusebowon‧Sasangchobongwon(東醫壽世保元‧四象草本卷)』, 『Donguisusebowon‧Gabogubon(東醫壽世保元‧甲午舊本)』, 『Donguisusebowon‧Sinchukbon(東醫壽世保元‧辛丑本)』Results and Conclusions 1) The origin of Jeoryoungchajeonja-tang is discovered in the prescriptions for Lee-su(利水), that is, Jeoryoung-tang(猪苓湯). 2) Ohryoung-san(五苓散) introduced in 『Donguisusebowon‧Sasangchobongwon(東醫壽世保元‧四象草本卷)』progressively transformed into Shihosaryoung-san(柴胡四苓散)(『Donguisusebowon‧Gabogubon(東醫壽世保元 ‧甲午舊本)』) and ultimately into Jeoryoungchajeonja-tang(『Donguisusebowon‧Sinchukbon(東醫壽世保元‧辛丑本)』), a prescription appropriate for usage in the Mangeum symptomatology(亡陰證). 3) The Jeoryoungchajeonja-tang is composed of 10 herbs. Of these, Notopterygium incisum Ting(羌活), Aralia cordata Thunb.(獨活), Schizonepeta tenuifolia Briq.(荊芥), Saposhnikovia divaricata Schischk.(防風) make the Pyoeum(表陰) drop, and Anemarrhena asphodeloides Bge.(知母), Gypsum fibrosum(石膏) scatter the uihwa(胃火), and Poria cocos Wolf.(茯苓), Alisma canaliculatum(澤瀉), Polyporus umbellatus Fr.(猪苓), Plantago asiatica L.(車前子) facilitate urination.

Deep Learning for Herbal Medicine Image Recognition: Case Study on Four-herb Product

  • The consumption of herbal medicine and related products (herbal products) have increased in South Korea. At the same time the quality, safety, and efficacy of herbal products is being raised. Currently, the herbal products are standardized and controlled according to the requirements of the Korean Pharmacopoeia, the National Institute of Health and the Ministry of Public Health and Social Affairs. The validation of herbal products and their medicinal component is important, since many of these herbal products are composed of two or more medicinal plants. However, there are no tools to support the validation process. Interest in deep learning has exploded over the past decade, for herbal medicine using algorithms to achieve herb recognition, symptom related target prediction, and drug repositioning have been reported. In this study, individual images of four herbs (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer, Atractylodes macrocephala Koidz, Poria cocos Wolf, Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fischer), actually sold in the market, were achieved. Certain image preprocessing steps such as noise reduction and resize were formatted. After the features are optimized, we applied GoogLeNet_Inception v4 model for herb image recognition. Experimental results show that our method achieved test accuracy of 95%. However, there are two limitations in the current study. Firstly, due to the relatively small data collection (100 images), the training loss is much lower than validation loss which possess overfitting problem. Secondly, herbal products are mostly in a mixture, the applied method cannot be reliable to detect a single herb from a mixture. Thus, further large data collection and improved object detection is needed for better classification.

Evaluation of Clinical Usefulness of Herbal Mixture HO-Series for Improving Hangover (복합생약 HO-Series의 숙취개선 임상적 유용성 평가)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the hangover relieving effect of HO-series. HO-S1 is an herbal mixture, which consists of extracts from Flower of Pueraria lobata Ohwi, Glycyrrhiza glabra Linné, Fruit of Lycium chinense Miller, Poria cocos Wolf, Acanthopanax sessiliflorum Seeman, Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi, Atractylodes lancea De Candlle and Zingiber officinale Roscoe. HO-S2 is a candidate that has been performed to ultra filtration based on HO-S1. HO-S3 is a mixture of amino acids and vitamins based on HO-S2. HO-01 is the final beverage base produced based on HO-S3. The antioxidant activity of HO-series was similar to that of vitamin C or trolox. The production of t-BHP induced reactive oxygen species(ROS) was significantly blocked in the presence of HO-series. In vivo study, AUC of alcohol and acetaldehyde concentrations in HO-S2 and HO-S3 treated groups significantly decreased. Hepatic alcohol dehydrogenase(ADH) and acetaldehyde dehydrogenase(ALDH) activity were significantly higher in HO-S2 and HO-S3 treated groups. And 2E1 activity and glutathione were significantly elevated, while the malondialdehyde level was not significantly in liver tissue. After alcohol exposure, the sensitivity scores of blood alcohol and acetaldehyde concentration and hangover symptoms were significantly decreased in the HO-01 intake group compared with the non-intake group. ALDH activity was significantly increased in the HO-01 intake group. HO-series have antioxidant activity and a protective effect from ROS. HO-S2, HO-S3 and HO-01 are potentially highly beneficial in relieving hangover, as it scavenges reactive free radicals and boosts the endogenous antioxidant system.

Effects of Addition Baekbokryung(White Poria cocos Wolf) Powder on the Quality Characteristics of Sulgidduk (백복령 가루 첨가가 설기떡의 품질 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • In an attempt to improve the taste and storage characteristics of Sulgidduk, a Korean traditional rice cake product, baekbokryung(White Poria cocos Wolf) powder was supplemented as one of the ingredients and Product Quality waw assessed. The baekbokryung Powder was added in rations of 0, 5, 7, 10, and $15\%$(w/w) per rice powder during the raw material preparations. The sensory, objective quality, and microbiological characteristics of the products were examined at 4-hr intervals during storage for 36 hours at $20^{\circ}C$ The sensory evaluation was conducted based on the acceptability and intensity characteristics of the product. In the acceptability test, a $5\%$ treatment wae renerally ranked with the highest score, among all the treatments while the preference differed according to ages of the panels ; namely, those in their 20's to 30's liked a $5\%$ supplementation while those in their 40's to 60's Preferred a $7\%$ one. The addition of baekbokryung Powder proportionally decreased the moisture content of the products. The colorimetric redness(a) and yellowness(b) of the Products increased with increasing added baekbokryung Powder. The redness values began to decrease slowly from the beginning while the rates were accelerated after 8 to 12 hours of the storage. In the textural characteristics, hardness, gumminess and adhesiveness values increased with increasing added baekbokryung powder. The rapid increase in adhesiveness during the initial 4 hour of storage and the following stabilization was noted. Cohesiveness and springiness values tended to decrease gradually with increasing added baekbokryung Powder. Except for the control sample, no significant differences in the total microbial counts among the treatments were noted. After 20 hours of storage, the control sample exhibited a rapid increase in total microbial count, while the Proliferations of microorganisms were rather suppressed in baekbokryung Powder treatments according to the added amounts The results of the study support the benefits of baekbokryung powder supplementation in Sulgidduk in the aspects of taste and functionality. The degree of further increase of baekbokryung Powder in Sulgidduk without causing the adverse qualify effects remains for future study.

A Review Study on the Treatment of Postpartum Depression in Traditional Chinese Medicine (산후 우울증 치료에 대한 중의학의 최근 임상연구 동향)

  • Objectives: This study was performed to review the research trends regarding the treatment of Postpartum Depression (P.P.D) in the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Methods: We searched articles in CNKI (China National Knowledge Infrastructure) from 2004 to 2013. Search key words were "产后抑郁症", "Postpartum Depression", and we selected 27 studies except for non-clinical studies, insufficient number of studies, unrelated studies and tests on animals. Results: We selected 27 articles with following results: 1) One study of Jadad Quality Assessment Scale score showed 3 points, 4 studies showed 2 points and 22 studies showed less than 1 point. Overall, the quality of the studies was low. 2) DSM - IV was frequently used as a diagnostic criteria and HAMD was mostly used as evaluation criteria. Diagnostic criteria and evaluation criteria were the same in HAMD and EPDS. 3) In TCM, there are various ways, such as herbal medicine, acupuncture, electro acupuncture, auricular acupuncture and/or massage to treat the postpartum depression. 4) The roots of Bupleurum falcatum Linne, Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch, Angelica gigas Nakai and Paeonia lactiflora Pall, the rhizome of Atractylodis macrocephala Koidz, the semen of Zizyphus jujuba Mill, the radix of Curcuma aromatica Salisb, the sclerotium of Poria cocos Wolf and the rhizomas of Cyperus rotundus L and of Cnidium officinale Makino are mainly used in the herbal medicine. BaekHoi (GV20) and Yindang (Ex-HN3) are mainly used in acupuncture points. 5) Most of the studies showed effective results. Some of the results were similar to those of the control groups which were cured by western medicine. Other results were better than those of control groups. Conclusions: Research on postpartum depression has been actively conducted in TCM and all studies showed effective results in the study group patients. Therefore, with this study, we hope to activate more clinical research on the treatment of patients in Korean traditional medicine.

Anti-wrinkle Effect of Oriental Medicine Cosmetics Containing Black Ginseng (흑삼을 함유한 한방소재 화장품의 주름개선 효과)

  • This study evaluated anti-wrinkle effect using toner and lotion containing ginsenoside Rg3 enriched black ginseng in oriental medicine like Liriope platy phyllla, Inonotus obliquus, Glycyrrhiza glabra and nourishing of the blood and energy(Atractylodes japonica, Poria cocos Wolf, Angelica gigas, Rehmanniae Radix Preparata, Cnidii Rhizoma, Paeonia lactiflora). 6 female adults on average at the age of 42.5 applied lotion after toner under the normal conditions of use on the face including crow's feed area, twice a day (in the morning and evening) for 4weeks. After 4 weeks, the replica of eye wrinkle was made and analyzed the image. The result was decreased in R1($3.15{\pm}0.35$ to $2.28{\pm}0.22$), R2($2.99{\pm}0.37$ to $2.13{\pm}0.21$), R3($2.09{\pm}0.31$ to $1.56{\pm}0.18$), R4($0.37{\pm}0.05$ to $0.29{\pm}0.03$), and R5($0.89{\pm}0.1$ to $0.75{\pm}0.06$)(P<0.05). Therefore, oriental medicine cosmetics containing black ginseng may play a role anti-wrinkle.

The effect of enhancing eye-wrinkle applying traditional herb medicine cosmetics (한방화장품의 눈가 주름 개선 효과)

  • This study evaluated anti-wrinkle effect for eye using essence and cream containing extract of Liriope platy phyllla, Inonotus obliquus, Glycyrrhiza glabra, black ginseng, Atractylodes japonica, Poria cocos Wolf, Angelica gigas, Rehmanniae Radix Preparata and Cnidii Rhizoma, Paeonia lactiflora. 6 female adults on average at the age of 44.8, applied cream after essence under the normal conditions of use on the crow's feet area, twice a day (in the morning and evening), 2mg/$1cm^2$ for 4weeks. After 4 weeks, the replica of eye wrinkle was made and analyzed the image. The result was that eye wrinkle was decreased in R1($3.22{\pm}0.85$ to $2.38{\pm}0.32$), R2($3.08{\pm}0.83$ to $2.22{\pm}0.32$), R3($2.29{\pm}0.64$ to $2.29{\pm}0.64$), R4($0.44{\pm}0.14$ to $0.44{\pm}0.14$), and R5($0.98{\pm}0.21$ to $0.98{\pm}0.21$)(P<0.05). Therefore, oriental medicine cosmetics containing traditional herb medicine may play a role anti-wrinkle for eye.
