  • The effect of pore former content on both porosity and pore structure was investigated for porous sintered reaction-bonded silicon nitrides (SRBSNs). A spherical PMMA with $d_{50}=8{\mu}m$ was employed as a pore-former. Its amount ranged from 0 to 30 part. Porous SRBSNs were fabricated by post-sintering at various temperatures where the porosity was controlled at $12{\sim}52%$. The strong tendency of increasing porosity with PMMA content and decreasing porosity with sintering temperature was observed. Measured pore-channel diameter increased $(0.3{\rightarrow}1.1{\mu}m)$ with both PMMA content and sintering temperature.

  • The performance of membranes is governed their pore struture. Pore structures of porous materials can be determined by a number of techniques. However, The novel technique, capillary folw porometry has a number of advantages. In this technique, the sample is brought in contact with a liquid that fills the pores in the membrane spontaneously. Gas under pressure is used to force the liquid from the pores and increase gas flow. Gas flow rate measured as a function of gas pressure in wet and dry samples yield data on the largest pore size, the mean flow pore size, flow distribution and permeability. Pore characteristics of a number of membranes were measured using this technique. This technique did not require the use of any toxic material and the pressure employed was low. Capillary flow porometry is a suitable technique for measurement of the pore structure of many membranes.

  • A hybrid coextrusion and lamination process has been developed to fabricate macrochanneled bioceramic scaffolds. This process was mainly composed of three steps (i.e., coextrusion of thermoplastic compound, lamination, and thermal treatment), forming unique pore channels in dense bioceramic body. Pore channels were formed by removing carbon black material, while calcium phosphate or Tetragonal Zirconia Polycrystals (TZP) with a calcium phosphate coating layer were used as dense body. Two kinds of pore structures were fabricated; that is, the pore channels were formed in uni- or three-directional array. Such macrochanneled bioceramic scaffolds exhibited the precisely controlled pore structure (pore size, porosity, and interconnection), offering excellent mechanical properties and cellular responses.

  • The influence of hot pressing on the pore structures of Nafion membranes was investigated by observing the Nafion before and after hot pressing with $^1H$ nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The freezing point depression and chemical shift data of water in the Nafion indicated the presence of two different pore size ranges in Nafion. Hot pressing mainly reduced the sizes and number of the big pores. The reduction of water uptake and proton conductivity after hot pressing was explained by this variation of pore size and number. We demonstrated the potential application of chemical shift data and NMR cryoporometry experiments to measure the relative pore sizes, on a nano scale, and numbers.

  • High strength concrete is being used increasingly in mass structure projects. The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of temperature during mixing, placing and curing on the strength development, hydration products and pore structures of high strength concrete in mass structures. The experiments were conducted with two different model walls, viz.: 1.5 m and 0.3 m under typical summer and winter weather conditions. The final part of this study deal with the clarification of the relationship between the long-term strength loss and the microstructure of the high strength concrete at high temperatures. Test results indicated that high elevated temperatures in mass concrete structures significantly accelerate the strength development of concrete at the early ages, while the long-term strength development is decreased. The long-term strength loss is caused by the decomposition of ettringite and increased the total porosity and amount of small pores.

  • Concrete is a heterogeneous material containing many weaknesses such as micro-cracks, pores and grain boundaries. The crack growth mechanism and failure behavior of concrete structures depend on the plastic deformation created by these weaknesses. In this article the non-linear finite element method is used to analyze the effect of presence of micro pore near a crack tip on both of the characteristics of crack tip plastic zone (its shape and size) and crack growth properties (such as crack growth length and crack initiation angle) under pure shear loading. The FE Code Franc2D/L is used to carry out these objectives. The effects of the crack-pore configurations and the spacing between micro pore and pre-excising crack tip on the characteristics of crack tip plastic zone and crack growth properties is highlighted. Based on the obtained results, the relative distance between the crack tip and the micro pore affects in very significant way the shape and the size of the crack tip plastic zone. Furthermore, crack growth length and crack initiation angle are mostly influenced by size and shape of plastic zone ahead of crack tip. Also the effects of pore decrease on the crack tip by variation of pore situation from linear to perpendicular configuration. The critical position for a micro pore is in front of the crack tip.

  • As a part of the studies on adsorptive properties of Korean halloysite clays, Hadong white clays of premium grade were examined for geometric pore structured by mercury porosimetry and for specific surface areas by nitrogen adsorption according to the BET procedure. Three size fractions of the native clay sample were derived from passage BS #100, #200 and #325 meshes, respectively. Several parameters lhus observed in relation to the pore structures are shown below: 1. The size fraction of BS #100, #200 and #325 show internal pore volumes of 25.3, 30.2 and $35.0m^2g^{-1}$, respectively. 2. In the distribution curves of the cumulative pore volume against pore diameter, it has been shown that the larticle sizes, the steeper the distribution over the larger ranges of pore diameters. The converse is true the smaller particles. 3. Internal pore areas increase with decrease in pore sizes. It follows that the pores having diameters of $\leq$0.1$\mu\textrm{m}$ are responsible for more than 90% of the total pore area. 4. The behaviour of nitrogen adsorption can be best described by BET type IV isotherm. Further, the hysteresis loops of the adsorptiondesorption curves become narrower with decresing particle sizes. 5. The specific surface areas observed for the fractions of BS #100, BS #200 and BS #325 are 34.6, 35.4 and 43.2m $^2g^{-1}$, respectively. and the calcined clay of BS #325 has a specific surface area near $30.4m^2g^{-1}$.

  • One of the leading causes for the damage of various underground structures during an earthquake is soil liquefaction, and among this liquefaction-induced uplift of these structures is a major concern. In this study, finite-difference modelling is carried out to study the liquefaction-induced uplift of an underground structure of 5 m diameter (D) with and without the replacement of the in-situ fine sand around the structure with the coarse sand. Soil replacements are carried out by three methods: replacement of soil above the structure, around the structure, and below the structure. The soil behaviour is represented using the elastic-perfectly plastic Mohr-Coulomb model, where the pore pressures were computed using Finn-Byrne formulation. The predicted pore pressure and uplift of the structure due to sinusoidal input motion were validated with the centrifuge tests reported in the literature. Based on numerical studies, an empirical equation is developed for the determination of liquefaction-induced maximum uplift of the underground structure without replacement of the in-situ sand. It is found that the replacement of soil around the structure with 2D width and spacing of D can reduce the maximum uplift by 50%.

  • Earthquakes not only produce additional load on the structures and underlying soil, but also change the strength characteristics of the soil. Therefore, in order to analyze soil structures for stability, the behaviour after earthquake must be considered. In this paper, a series of cyclic triaxial tests and monotonic triaxial tests were carried out to investigate the undrained shear strength and liquefaction strength characteristics of Nak-Dong River sand soils which were subjected to cyclic loading. The sample was consolidated in the first stage and then subjected to stress controlled cyclic loading with 0.1Hz. After the cyclic loading, the cyclic-induced excess pore water pressure was dissipated by opening the drainage valve and the sample was reconsolidated to the initial effective mean principal stress(p/sub c/'). After reconsolidation, the monotonic loading or cyclic loading were applied to the specimen. In the results, the undrained shear strength and liquefaction strength characteristics depended on the pore pressure ratio(Ur=U/p/sub c/'). The volume change following reconsolidation can be a function of cyclic-induced excess pore water pressure and the maximum double amplitude of axial strain.
