  • The physical properties of sintered body made from 3 kinds of slip, F (Flocculated), M (Moderate), and D (Dispersed) for coal fly ash 70-clay 30 (wt%) were studied in terms of slip states and pore size distribution of sintered bodies. The floc particle size distribution for slip F was wider than slip D and the slip F contained flocs larger than 11 $\mu\textrm{m}$. The pore size distribution of the green body of all slips ranged over 1∼4 $\mu\textrm{m}$. The pores smaller than 1 $\mu\textrm{m}$ almost disappeared during the sintering process, while the larger pore of 2.5∼3 $\mu\textrm{m}$ growed by 1 $\mu\textrm{m}$. The pore distribution for the green body of slip F became a narrow in width and high in height after sintering and the large pore limit in a slip F sintered body was 5.1 $\mu\textrm{m}$ which is smaller than that of other slip. The slip F rather flocculated was favorable over slip D well dispersed, in offering a higher compressive strength. From these results, the mechanical strength of sintered body is dependent on the pore distribution which could be controlled by dispersion state of the slips.

  • An improvement over the method of pore size distribution analysis has been made in this work. The improved method is based upon the idea of the micro pore analysis of Mikhail, Brunauer, and Bodor, and utilizes the V-t curve of nitrogen adsorption. Two pore models are assumed, and the deviation of the initial slope of the V-t plot is ascribed to the pore filling and to the adsorption on the wall of unfilled pores. The improved method of this work is very convenient in that the analysis starts from the small pore regions. The method of this work is however quite distinct from the similar V-t plot method proposed by Sellevold and Radjy. The proposed method is applied to a few adsorbents, and very satisfactory results are obtained. The cumulative surface area calculated by this method also agrees very well with those obtained by the BET plot or by the t-method.

  • Onggi, which is described as a breathing pottery, has strongly influenced the traditional food culture in Korea. In this study Onggi is compared to porcelains including celadon and white porcelain to analyze the sources of pore formation. The differences in starting materials are examined for chemical and mineralogical compositions, particle size and distribution. The gas permeability of the fired samples is correlated to the matrix microstructure. The broad particle size distribution and high iron oxide content of Onggi are revealed as the major cause for the pore formation. Open pores are formed with large particles in the Onggi body while closed pores have a high iron oxide concentration. The Onggi body with increased open pores leads to the high gas permeability.

  • Moisture transport in concrete in atmospheric environment was studied in this paper. Based on the simplified formula of the thickness of the adsorbed layer, the pore-size distribution function of cement paste was calculated utilizing the water adsorption isotherms. Taking into consideration of the hysteresis effect in cement paste, the moisture diffusivity of cement paste was obtained by the integration of the pore-size distribution. Concrete is regarded as a two-phase composite with cement paste and aggregate, neglecting the moisture diffusivity of aggregate, then moisture diffusivity of concrete was evaluated using the composite theory. Finally, numerical simulation of humidity response during both wetting and drying process was carried out by the finite difference method of partial differential equation for moisture transport, and the numerical results well capture the trend of the measured data.

  • As a part of the studies on adsorptive properties of Korean halloysite clays, Hadong white clays of premium grade were examined for geometric pore structured by mercury porosimetry and for specific surface areas by nitrogen adsorption according to the BET procedure. Three size fractions of the native clay sample were derived from passage BS #100, #200 and #325 meshes, respectively. Several parameters lhus observed in relation to the pore structures are shown below: 1. The size fraction of BS #100, #200 and #325 show internal pore volumes of 25.3, 30.2 and $35.0m^2g^{-1}$, respectively. 2. In the distribution curves of the cumulative pore volume against pore diameter, it has been shown that the larticle sizes, the steeper the distribution over the larger ranges of pore diameters. The converse is true the smaller particles. 3. Internal pore areas increase with decrease in pore sizes. It follows that the pores having diameters of $\leq$0.1$\mu\textrm{m}$ are responsible for more than 90% of the total pore area. 4. The behaviour of nitrogen adsorption can be best described by BET type IV isotherm. Further, the hysteresis loops of the adsorptiondesorption curves become narrower with decresing particle sizes. 5. The specific surface areas observed for the fractions of BS #100, BS #200 and BS #325 are 34.6, 35.4 and 43.2m $^2g^{-1}$, respectively. and the calcined clay of BS #325 has a specific surface area near $30.4m^2g^{-1}$.

  • This paper was made to evaluate the effect of the type of latex for coating on the printability by investigating the structure of pore such as the pore fraction, the number of pores, pore size and distribution of coated paper. The coated structure is mainly depend on the results of interaction between pigment and binder. It means that the structure of pore formed is chiefly affected by the type of latex. This physical properties of pore have a close relation with ink set-off associated with the drying rate, the speed of penetration of ink into base paper and printing gloss. Therefore it was necessary to find out the relationship between pore structure and the performance of printability by modifying the type of latex to vary the pore structure of coated paper. Acrylic latex was superior to S/B latex in the sedimentation volume, compressibility, smoothness, pore fraction and its number, the weight of transferred ink onto the coated paper and ink repellance. In contrast, water retention and ink setting were not good. in the comparison of anionic and amphoteric latex, amphoteric latex showed better performance in the thickness, smoothness, pore fraction and its number, pore size, the weight of ink transmitted and K&N ink receptivity, etc.

  • Numbers fitting-curve equations have been proposed to predict soil-water retention curve (SWRC) whose parameters have no definitude physical meaning. And these methods with precondition of measuring SWRC data is time-consuming. A simplified directly method to estimate SWRC without parameters obtained by fitting-curve is proposed. Firstly, the total SWRC can be discretized into linear segments respectively. Every segment can be represented by linear formulation and every turning point can be determined by the pore-size distribution (PSD) of Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry (MIP) tests. The pore diameters governing the air-entry condition (AEC) and residual condition (RC) can be determined by the PSDs of MIP test. The PSD changes significantly during drying in SWR test, so the determination of AEC and RC should use the PSD under corresponding suction conditions. Every parameter in proposed equations can be determined directly by PSD without curve-fitting procedure and has definitude physical meaning. The proposed equations give a good estimation of both unimodal and bimodal SWRCs.

  • Fly ash has become an important component of concrete as supplementary cementitious material with the development of concrete technology. To make use of fly ash efficiently, four types of fly ash with particle size distributions that are in conformity with four functions, namely, S.Tsivilis, Andersen, Normal and F distribution, respectively, were prepared. The four particle size distributions as functions of the strength and pore structure of concrete were thereafter constructed and investigated. The results showed that the compressive and flexural strength of concrete with the fly ash that conforming to S.Tsivilis, Normal, F distribution increased by 5-10 MPa and 1-2 MPa, respectively, compared to the reference sample at 28 d. The pore structure of the concrete was improved, in which the total porosity of concrete decreased by 2-5% at 28 d. With regarding to the fly ash with Andersen distribution, it was however not conducive to the strength development of concrete. Regression model based on the grey multiple linear regression theory was proved to be efficient to predict the strength of concrete, according to the characteristic parameters of particle size and pore structure of the fly ash.

  • Various carbon aerogels (CAs) were prepared from polymerization of resorcinol and formaldehyde and applied as the electrode materials of an electric double layer capacitor (EDLC) with the aim of controlling the textural and electrochemical properties of CAs by the type of base catalyst and the ratio of resorcinol to catalyst (R/C). The CAs from $NaHCO_3$ and $KHCO_3$ with $H^+$ ions had higher specific surface areas but exhibited lower electrochemical properties than those from $K_2CO_3$ and $Na_2CO_3$, which had more uniform pore size distributions. The electrochemical properties of $Na_2CO_3$ were superior to those of $K_2CO_3$ probably because the polarizing power of $Na^+$ ions was higher than $K^+$ ions. With an increasing R/C ratio, the pore sizes of CA showed a tendency to increase but the uniformity of the pore size distribution got worse. For the four base catalysts, the highest electrochemical property was obtained at the R/C ratio of 500.
