Reports about coefficients of consolidation in horizontal direction of marine clays located at seven different sites on western and southern coast area in Korea were reviewed and characteristics of them were investigated. As results of analyses, for relation between the depth of ground and coefficients, any trend and correlation between them can not be found since they are more influenced by the nature of geological formation rather than the depth of ground. Dissipation time t50, one of important factors in estimating value of coefficient of consolidation in horizontal direction, was found to be quite related to them. For the correlation between the maximum pore pressure developed and coefficients, coefficient of consolidation in the horizontal direction tend to decrease with increase of the maximum pore pressure whereas the ground water level or static pore pressure do not have any specific correlation with those coefficients. Values of coefficient tends to increase with values of liquid limit, plastic limit and plastic index and thus they are found to be directly influenced by the contents of fines. Values of coefficient of consolidation in horizontal direction are also increased with increases of permeability in horizontal direction and coefficient of consolidation in vertical direction. They were highly correlated between coefficient of consolidation and permeability in horizontal direction while values of coefficient of consolidation in horizontal direction have a relatively low correlation with values of coefficient of consolidation in horizontal direction. Sometimes, coefficient of consolidation in horizontal direction obtained from field tests were estimated 2-3 times greater than those from laboratory tests.

The best way to understand paper properties is to study paper structure. Paper is composed solid materials (pulp and other additives) and air three-dimensionally, it's important to understand pore structure of the paper. There are several method to analysis pore structure of the paper. Mercury intrusion technique is frequently used for the characterization of the porous paper, giving access to parameters such as pore size and pore distribution. But some researchers indicated mercury intrusion distorts the structure due to application of high pressure. So this paper suggest new analysis technique to pore structure of the paper. New pore analysis technique with SEM does not require high pressure, gives good resolution and measures pore structure.

When ground disturbance takes place due to vertical drain construction through mandrel penetration, that affects excess pore water pressure dissipation time because of soft clay coefficient of permeability decreasing. Eventually, consolidation time is influenced. In this research, we measure process of excess pore water pressure dissipation before and after each other different shape's mandrel penetration through model test, and calculates range of smear zone, coefficient of permeability and horizontal coefficient of consolidation after model test. Using of test result, we grasp a degree of drainage ability drop resulting from vertical drain construction.
The vertical drain method generate the disturbed zone, because the drainage should be penetrated into the in-situ ground. The characteristics of the smear zone generated cause the problems that the coefficient of permeability decreases and the consolidation time anticipated in the design is not properly shortened. In this study, in order to understand such influence, the laboratory test were carried out so as to reasonably determine the coefficient of consolidation in silt. For that procedure, mandrel of a diversity were penetrated into the soil tube with silt, and then the variation of pore water pressure was measured with the pore pressure meter, Then, the range of smear effect on silt was estimated with monitoring data through the laboratory test, and also analyzed with inputting the coefficient of consolidation into the theoretical equation.

Rankine's theory of earth pressure cannot be directly employed to c-${\phi}$ soils backfill with a sloping ground subjected to complex loadings. In this paper, an analytical solution for active earth pressures on retaining structures of cohesive backfill with an inclined surface subjected to surcharge, pore water pressure and seismic loadings, are derived on the basis of the lower-bound theorem of limit analysis combined with Rankine's earth pressure theory and the Mohr-Coulomb yield criterion. The generalized active earth pressure coefficients (dimensionless total active thrusts) are presented for use in comprehensive design charts which eliminate the need for tedious and cumbersome graphical diagram process. Charts are developed for rigid earth retaining structures under complex environmental loadings such as the surcharge, pore water pressure and seismic inertia force. An example is presented to illustrate the practical application for the proposed coefficient charts.
This paper describes a systematic way of identifying the horizontal coefficient of consolidation of clayey soil by applying an optimization technique to the early part of dissipation data measured from the self-boring pressuremeter strain holding test. An analytical solution developed by Randolph & Wroth (1979) was implemented in normalized form to express the build-up of excess pore pressures as a function of the rigidity index and subsequent dissipation of excess pore pressures around a pressuremeter Horizontal coefficient of consolidation was determined by minimizing the differences between theoretical and measured excess pore pressure curves over 50% degree of dissipation range using optimization technique. The effectiveness of the proposed back-analysis method was examined against the real fled performances obtained from pressuremeter strain holding tests at Gimje and Yangsan site. It is shown that the proposed back-analysis method can evaluates the rational horizontal coefficient of consolidation, which is similar to those obtained from the piezocone dissipation test. Furthermore, proposed method can evaluate appropriate coefficient of consolidation for soil under partially drained condition.
The earth pressure coefficient at rest for clayey soils in the one-dimensional state, $K_0$ obtained from the triaxial test is not correct in principle because the seepage flow is radial and the displacement of soil elements is three-dimensional. Measurements of the earth pressure and the pore water pressure during one-dimension consolidation in the consolidometer ring are presented. The earth pressure and pore water pressure are measured directly by a circular part of the consolidometer ring of a floating type at its mid height. A plastic clay showed $K_0$=0.5 irrespective of pressure in the consolidometer ring.

Paper is a composite consisted of various solid materials including pulp, filler and other additives. The pore is also one of components consisting the paper structure. Thus the characterization of pore structure of paper is very helpful in the understanding the structural properties of paper. Mercury intrusion technique is frequently used for the characterization of the porous paper, giving access to parameters such as pore size and pore distribution. But some researchers pointed out the problem that the distortion of the pore structure can be occurred by the application of high pressure during mercury intrusion. Thus in this study, we tried to evaluate the potential of SEM and image analysis method as means for analyzing pore structure of the paper. The new pore analysis technique with SEM and image analysis does not require the application of high pressure, and gave better relation between the measured pore characteristics and the bulk of sheet than mercury intrusion method.
Piezocone Penetration Test has been performed in the soft ground over the site preparation area at Inchon International Airport(IIA). With the pore pressure dissipation test results, the changes in the permeability and the coefficient of consolidation in clayey soil were checked and the differences of the undrained shear stength verified the soft ground improvement effect from vane test and piezocone test both before and after the improvement. From the results, thin sand seam was found and this caused a big difference in the coefficient of permeability and consolidation. The coefficient of consolidation was high in the upper marine deposit and relatively low in lower marine deposit. It was found that the reduction of void ratio by preloading resulted in the reduction of coefficient of consolidation after the ground improvement. In addition, there were some variations of undrained shear strength when the number of 15 or 18 was used as the coefficient of piezocone(Nkt). However, when the average value of undrained shear strength calculated using Nkt=10 was applied, the result indicated the similar average value with the result of vane test and the increasing rate of strength( Δsu/Δ$\sigma$≒0.38) also showed the similar distribution.
Brine leakage is a common phenomenon during construction facilitated by artificial freezing technique, threatening the stability of frozen wall due to the continual thawing of already frozen domain. This paper takes the frequently encountered soft clay in Wujiang District as the study object, and remolded specimens were prepared by mixing calcium chloride solutions at five levels of concentration. Both the deformation and pore water pressure of frozen specimens during thawing were investigated by two-stage loading tests. Three sections were noted from the changes in the strain rate of specimens during thawing at the first-stage load, i.e., instantaneous, attenuated, and quasi-stable sections. During the second-stage loading, the deformation of post-thawed soils is closely correlated with the dissipation of pore water pressure. Two characteristic indexes were obtained including thaw-settlement coefficient and critical water content. The critical water content increases positively with salt content. The higher water content of soil leads to a larger thaw-settlement coefficient, especially at higher salt contents, based on which an empirical equation was proposed and verified. The normalized pore water pressure during thawing was found to dissipate slower at higher salt contents, with a longer duration to stabilize. Three physical indexes were experimentally determined such as freezing point, heat conductivity and water permeability. The freezing point decreases at higher salt contents, especially as more water is involved, like the changes in heat conductivity. The water permeability maintains within the same order at the considered range of salt contents, like the development of the coefficient of consolidation. The variation of the pore volume distribution also accounts for this.
