At present, the polymer-modified mortars are used as high-performance as well as multi-functional materials in the construction industry. The purpose of this study is to synthesize polymer to modify in cement mortars and make test samples to understand pore size distribution. This paper deals with the effect of monomer ratio on the typical properties of polymer-modified mortars using Methylmethacrylate-Butyl Acrylate(MMA/BA) latexes synthesized through emulsion polymerization. From the results, we knew that the pore volume of polymer-modified mortars using Methylmethacrylate-Butyl Acrylate latexes at bound MMA contents of 70 and 60 percent is 7.5-75cm$^3$/g and the fine pore volume is increased with an increase in the polymer-cement ratio. The total pore volume of polymer-modified mortars using MMA/BA latexes is linearly reduced with an increase in the bound MMA content and increased in the polymer-cement ratio.

Recently, a number of studies have been conducted on photocatalysts and adsorbents that can remove harmful substances to improve environmental problems related to fine particles. In this study, a porous foam composites were fabricated using palm-based activated carbon having a large amount of micro-pores and foam concrete with a significantly larger total pore volume compared to general construction materials. To evaluate the adsorption potential of fine particles, the pore structure of the foam composites were analyzed. For the analysis of the pore structure of the foam composite, BET and Harkins-jura theory were applied from the measured nitrogen adsorption isotherm. From the results of the analysis, the specific surface area and micro-pore volume of the foam composite containing activated carbon increased significantly compared to Plain. As thereplacement of activated carbon increased, the specific surface area and micro-pore volume of the foam composite tended to increase. It seems that the foam composite has high adsorption performance for gaseous fine particle precursor such as nitrogen oxides.
Diffusion and partition of progesterone into the polyacrylamide gel was examined. Diffusion coefficient of progesterone decreased down to an asymptotic value as the concentration of the organic solvents in the diffusing medium increased. However the partition coefficient diminished steadily. Crosslinking density in the gel didn't affected the diffusion coefficient considerably but lowered the partition coefficient due to the contraction of pore volume of the gel. Progesterone showed higher diffusion coefficient as well as partition coefficient in the polyurethane than in the polyacrylamide gel, which seems to be ascribed to the difference in hydrophobicity, pore volume and pore size of the polymer matrix.
Various active carbons were made from plant sources of coconut shell, pine tree, oak tree and lignite coal. Pore characteristics of these adsorbents were investigated. 1, With increasing activation time, specific surface area and pore volume increased, but the development of micropores was limited at a certain level. The average pore diameter, by BET, of coconut active carbon was 15.5-21.8$\AA$ and that of lignite carbon was 15.6-31.3$\AA$. The pore diameters of silica-gel, sepiolite and zeolite was 30.9$\AA$, 58.6$\AA$ and 55.7$\AA$, respectively. 2. The Horvath - Kawazoe micropore diameter of coconut shell active carbon was under 10.5$\AA$ and that of the other active carbon was under 20.9$\AA$ but silica-gel 33$\AA$, sepiolite 103 $\AA$ and zeolite was unexpectedly large to be 175$\AA$. From the difference between BET micropore diameter and Howath - Kawazoe diameter, it could be said that silica - gel has comparatively uniform pore diameter but sepiolite and zeolite have very uneven diameter. 3. Total pore volume of coconut shell active carbon was 0.27-1.04 cm3/g but that of the other active carbon, 0.23-0.62 cm3/g, was much lower than that of coconut shell active carbon. Hydrophilic adsorbent silica - gel and sepiolite showed big difference in specific surface area, but pore volumes of these were 0.47 and 0.56 cm3/g showing similar value and micropore volumes of these were, respectively, 0.06 cm3/g and 0.04 cm3/g. Total pore volume of zeolite was 0.1 cm3/g and that of micropore was only 0.02 cm3/g.
During the full-scale water treatment operation at "G" Water Treatment Plant in Seoul, we investigated changes in pore volume distribution and specific surface area of GAC with time. The pore volume of the used GAC decreased to the level below 0.6 cc/g while that of the brand new GAC was ranged 0.7~0.9 cc/g. The specific surface area of GAC pores changed within the range between $1100{\sim}1200m^2/g$ and $700{\sim}800m^2/g$. Bacteria attached to the surface of GAC shows a gradual increase ($0.4{\time}10^6{\sim}8.5{\time}10^6CFU/g$) under scanninig electron microscope (SEM). TOC removal was enhanced due to growth of the attached bacteria on GAC. It was found that TOC removal was closely related with physical parameters (pore volume, specific surface area) linearly under the investigated conditions. The used GAC need to be exchanged into new one or re-generated to remove organic matters (TOC) effectively from the finished drinking water.

This study attempts to propose an evaluation considering the property of concrete pore which affects the deterioration of neutralization and the rebar resistance of concrete. Understanding pore property of concrete in using extent, for practical using of concrete manufacturing condition. basic quality property and durability estimation etc, the results of the experiment are as follows. 1) The result of analysis pore property of every specimen with the method of area ratio, in limitation of $10^{-6}{\sim}10^{-5}m$, the pore distribution ratio was maximum. It was high value as W/C was increased and the unit cement content was decreased. 2) In case of using admixture. the volume of pores was some increased as variation of mixing content. In high W/C range, it was very increased compared with plain concrete. 3) Concerned with compressive strength and volume of pores in hardened concrete, it is possible compressive strength estimation using the property of concrete pores. 4) Direct measurement of concrete pore property is difficult. the valuation of the dynamic modulus of elasticity using ultrasonic wave velocity was available. 5) Quantitatively evaluation of concrete structure durability by past result of pore distribution estimation, and it can be estimative scale of property study on the concrete materials.
The objective of this study is to investigate the waste recycling possibility, practicability, economic efficiency and acid gas sorbent use of the hard-shelled mussel. This study is to investigate the hydration/calcination reaction and fixed bed reactor. The physical-chemical characteristics of the hard-shelled mussel were analyzed by ICP SEM-EDX, BET and pore volume. Thus, the results could be summarized as follows; Hard-shelled mussel can be used as iron-manufacture and chemical sorbents considering more than 53.7% of the mussel is lime content. The SO$_2$removal efficiency of the hard-shelled mussel after calcined hydration increased thirty times as a result of the higher pore size, specific surface area and pore volume. Also, the CaO content, pore volume, pore size distribution and specific surface area greatly influenced the SO$_2$ and NOx removal reactivity. The optimum particle diameter average of hard-shelled mussel was $\pm$100 mesh, which was applied to the sorbent on the medium/small scale waste incinerator and flue gas desulfurization processes.
Cigarettes were made using a triple filter with several porous materials in its cavity. The removal effect of the adsorbents on carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide in cigarette smoke was investigated with the variation of their surface area and pore volume distributions. Several attempts were made to activated coconut shell based char under the fixed steam purging rate. 1. The specific surface area increased in number of micropore. It was found for transitional pore to have a little effect on the total surface area. 2. A Small amount of the particulate matter adsorbed on the adsorbents with transitional pores, Zeolite showed a little effect on the carbon monoxide adsorption though its small pore volume, but there was no significant difference in the adsorption capacity zeolite and the others. 3. In the adsorption for hydrogen cyanide as a vapor phase in cigarette smoke, the adsorption effect of the adsorbents increased remarkably with increasing their surface area and number of micropore. It was considered that the adsorbents with small pore volume like molecular seive 4A, in which the capillary diffusion of adsorbates could not be able, would not be effective for the adsorption of hydrogen cyanide.
This paper deals with the accumulated damage in concrete structures due to the cyclic freeze-thaw as an environmental load. The cyclic ice body nucleation and growth processes in porous systems are affected by the thermo-physical and mass transport properties, and gradients of temperature and chemical potentials. Furthermore, the diffusivity of deicing chemicals shows significantly higher value under cyclic freeze-thaw conditions. Consequently, the disintegration of concrete structures is aggravated at marine environments, higher altitudes, and northern areas. However, the properties of cyclic freeze-thaw with crack growth and diffusion of chloride ion effects are hard to be identified in tests, and there has been no analytic model for the combined degradations. The main objective is to determine the driving force and evaluate the reduced strength and stiffness by freeze-thaw. For the development of computational model of those coupled deterioration, micro-pore structure characterization, pore pressure based on the thermodynamic equilibrium, time and temperature dependent super-cooling with or without deicing salts, nonlinear-fracture constitutive relation for the evaluation of internal damage, and the effect of entrained air pores (EA) has been modeled numerically. As a result, the amount of ice volume with temperature dependent surface tensions, freezing pressure and resulting deformations, and cycle and temperature dependent pore volume has been calculated and compared with available test results. The developed computational program can be combined with DuCOM, which can calculate the early aged strength, heat of hydration, micro-pore volume, shrinkage, transportation of free water in concrete. Therefore, the developed model can be applied to evaluate those various practical degradation cases as well.

Pine (Pinus densiflora) and aspen (Populus euramericana) wood meals were treated with ozone at various time schedule in acidic condition. The lignin contents and surface area of the ozone treated wood meals were determined and the enzymatic hydrolysis rate of ozonated wood meals was evaluated. The feasibility of enzymatic hydrolysis of the ozone treated wood meal was obviously influenced with the degree of delignification. After ozone treatment of wood meal for 10min, total pore volume were slightly increased in the surface of wood meal. When wood meals were treated with ozone longer than 10min, few change in the pore volume was observed. However, the area of over $50{\AA}$ of pore size is increased with ozonation time. As a conclusion, the rate of enzymatic hydrolysis of wood is more effective with the pore size distribution than the total pore volume.
