The chromosome behavior and it's synapsis in the meiosis of pollen mother cell were studied on Populus alba L. as a female parent tree, Populus glandulosa Uyeki as a male parent tree and their hybrid, Populus alba x glandulosa. 1. At metaphase I, the number of nuclear plates with early separation chromosome were observed with the lowest proportion of 11.0% in Populus glandulosa and with the highest proportion of 13.0% in Populus alba${\times}$glandulosa. 2. At metaphase II, early separation chromosomes appeared with the frequency of 11.0% in Populus alba${\times}$glandulosa. But the frequency was not different with those of the parental trees. 3. At anaphase I, lagging chromosomes appeared with some high rate of 11.6% in Populus alba${\times}$glandulosa and yet the number of chromosome bridges in populus alba x glandulosa almost were not different with the partental trees. 4. At anaphase II, lagging chromosomes appeared with some high frequency of 10.2% in Populus alba${\times}$glandulosa and the chromosome bridges in Populus glandulosa appeared with the highest frequency in all studied trees. 5. The frequency of abnormal pollen sporad was the highest value of 8.2% in Populus alba${\times}$glandulosa among the studied trees. With the results, it might be assured that the chromosome segregation and it's synapsis behaved normally in Populus alba, Populus glandulosa and Populus alba x glandulosa, and so all the studied trees could produced normal pollens.
In order to investigate biomass yield of one-year-old hyblrid poplars, Pripulusalba x P. glandulosa $F_1$ and Populus nigra var. italica x P. maximowiczii $F_1$clones, as energy and fiber resources, dry matter yield, leaf area, leaf area index, dry matter production ability, specific gravity and fiber length and width were measured. Dry matter yield was 1.89 ton/ha for Poplus alba x P. glandulosa $F_1$ and 3.63 ton/ha for Populus nigra via.italica x P. merximowiczii $F_1$ clones in the planting density of 20,000 trees/ha and in the planting density of 40,000 trees/ha was 3.87 ton/ha for Populus alba x P. glandulosa $F_1$and 5.64 ton/ha for Populus nigra var. italica x P. maximowiczii $F_1$ clones. Leaf area index was 1.24mtim2 in the planting density of 20,000 trees/ha and 2.45 m31m3 in the density of 40,000 trees/ha for Populus alba x P. glandulosa $F_1$ clones and it was 1.96 m21m2 in the planting density of 20,000 trees/ha and 3.36 m21m2 in the density of 40,000 trees/ha for the hybrid $F_1$ Populus nigra var. italica x P. maximowiczii clones. The average specific gravity of the hybrid poplars was 0..36 when bark and pith were included and 0.31 when bark and pith were removed in the plot of 20,000 trees/ha and in the 40,000 trees/ha plot showed 0.35 and 0.31 respectively, for Populus alba x P. glandulosa $F_1$clones. It was 0.36 when bark and pith were included and 0.32 when bark and pith were removed in the 20,000 trees/ha plot and in the 40,000 trees/ha plot was 0.34 and 0.31 respectively for Populus nigra var. italica x P. maximowiczii $F_1$clones. The average fiber length was 0.57 mm in the 20,000 trees/ha plot and 0.58 mm in the 40,000 trees/ha plot for Poplus alba x P. glandulosa $F_1$clones and was 0.60 in both plots of 20,000 trees/ha and 40,000 trees/ha for Populus nigra var. italica x P. maximowiczii $F_1$ clones. There is a big clonal variation among those clones studied, showing high selection potential in both species.

We examined two Populus species (Populus euramericana and Populus alba ${\times}$ Populus glandulosa) trees grown under livestock waste leachate treatment in the field. We investigated their physiological properties (photosynthetic rate, chlorophyll contents, transpiration rate and intercellular $CO_2$ concentration) and antioxidant enzyme activities. Ascorbate peroxidase and glutathione reductase were analyzed. According to our measurements, P. euramericana at control site showed a lower total chlorophyll contents, photosynthetic rate, intercellular $CO_2$ concentration, transpiration and stomatal conductance than those of trees at treatment site. P. alba ${\times}$ P. glandulosa showed low stomatal conductance and low photosynthetic rate.

A cDNA, PSOD1, encoding cytosolic copper/zinc superoxide dismutase (CuZn-SOD) was cloned and characterized from a full length cDNA library prepared from Populus alba${\times}$Populus glandulosa cultured in vitro. A PSOD1, is 725 nucleotides long and has an open reading frame of 459 bp with 152 amino acid residues (pI 5.43). The deduced amino acid sequence of PSOD1 perfect matched to the previously reported CuZn-SOD (CAC33845.1). Consensus amino acid residues (His-45, -47, -62, -70, -79, -119) were involved in Cu-, Cu/Zn-, and Zn- binding ligands. The deduced amino acid sequence of PSOD1 exhibited the high level of similarity from 100 to $85\%$ among previously registered SOD genes. The expression of PSOD1 in poplar increased at the 1 mM $H_{2}O_2$ and drought stress during 30 min and 60 min, but the ozone treated poplar increased at 30 min in the early time and then decreased at 60 min.

A type 3 metallothionein cDNA (PMT3a) from ozone-treated Populus alba${\times}$Populus glandulosa cDNA library has been isolated and characterized. A PMT3a cDNA is 459 nucleotides long and has an open reading frame of 201 bp with a deduced amino acid sequence of 66 residues (pI 4.94). The deduced amino acid sequence of PMT3a matched to the previously reported metallothionein genes. The deduced amino acid sequence of PMT3a showed the $86\%$ identity with P. balsamifera ${\times}$P. deltoides. Expression of PMT3a by the RT-PCR was increased 60 min than 30 min after drought treatment. The ozone treated poplar increased at 30 min in the early time and then decreased at 60 min.
The good growth of Populus alba ${\times}$ P. glandulosa is shown at the foothill of the mountain where good soil moisture is available, but its growth is poor at the upper part of the mountain where soil moisture is limitted. Stomatal frequency, stomatal size and transpiration rates that affect soil moisture demand were determined in order to know how this character is inherited from its parents. Number of stomata per $mm^2$, length and width of stomata from the abaxial leaf and transpiration rate ($g/cm^2$) per day in P. alba ${\times}$ P. glandulosa showed intermediate values between those of their parents, while P. alba showed the highest values and P. davidiana the lowest values. The values of stomatal frequency of P. alba ${\times}$ P. glandulosa were close to the expected mean values of parents in the $x^2$ test, and in the regression analysis the transpiration rates for the hybrid and its midparent had strong relationship with 0.97 of regression coefficient. The fact that these intermediate characteristics were observed in the hybrid suggests incomplete dominance in the hybrid. It is concluded that soil moisture demand in P. alba ${\times}$ P. glandulosa and its parents is closed related to stomatal frequency, stomatal size and transpiration rate.
The infrared specta of wood powders have been recorded both in the untreated stste and after treatment through 1%-NaOH extraction(2hrs) and alcohol-benzene mixture extraction. Differences between the spectra of 3 species(Pinus densiflora, Populus alba x glandulosa and Quercus mongolica) can be explained chiefly in terms of theirs chemical compositions through comparisions of the spectra of pure cellulose powders. 1. The peak near $3400cm^{-1}$ from wood powders appeared at $3420cm^{-1}$, which was shifted to left compared with pure cellulose powders. 2. Many new peaks appeared at 2725, 1730, 1660, 1640, 1600, 1510, 1500, 1460, 1385, 1270, 830 and $810cm^{-1}$ etc., which were not appeared in pure cellulose powders. 3. Pinus densiflora spectra of untreated powders showed small peak appeared at $2840cm^{-1}$, which was the most characteristic band. There were peaks at $1240cm^{-1}$ in Populus alba x glandulosa and Quercus mongolica spectra of untreated wood powders. 4. Treated wood powder spectra showed weak or no peaks at near $1730cm^{-1}$ and also at near $2920cm^{-1}$. $2840cm^{-1}$, near $1385-1365cm^{-1}$, near $1235cm^{-1}$ and $1110-1095cm^{-1}$ etc. 5. The Alcohol-benzene extractive spectrum from Pinus densiflora showed many peaks at $3600-2300cm^{-1}$, $3100-2800cm^{-1}$, $1700cm^{-1}$, $1450cm^{-1}$ and $1375cm^{-1}$ etc. The most characteristic band of the extractives appeared at $3100-2900cm^{-1}$.
Above ground biomass production of one-year-old hybrid poplars was investigated to select the best clones which are suitable for short rotation forestry. The results were as follows: 1. Average dry weight of Populus alba X P. glandulosa Fl clones was 2.86 for stem,0.41 for branches 0.70 for leaves and 3.97 t/ha for total. and the ratios of green weight to dry weight were 0.47 for stem,0.36 for branches,0.31 for leaves and 0.42 for total. Dry weight of Populus nigra X P. maximowiczii Fl clones was 1.48 for stem, 0.54 for branches.0.71 for loaves and 2.73t/ha for total, and the ratios of green weight to dry weight were 0.42 for stem. 0.37 for branches, 0.28 for leaves and 0.36 for total. 2. Biomass production (green and dry weight)of Populus alba X P. glandulosa F1 clones can be predicted by diameter measurement only, but biomass production of Populus nigra X P. maximowiczii F1 clones can not be predicted by any of investigated characteristics. 3. Dry weight distribution of pepulus alba X P. glandulosa Fl clones were 73$\%$ for stem, 10$\%$ for branches and 17$\%$ for leaves, and dry weight distribution of P. Populus nigra X P. maximowiczii F1 clones were 54$\%$ for stem, 20$\%$ for branches and 26$\%$ for leaves.

The study was conducted to establish a method for the proliferation of hybrid poplar (P. alba × P. glandulosa) clone Bongwha1, an excellent biomass species. It was found that to collect the cuttings of Bonghwa1, it was necessary to use the main stem rather than the axillary branch. Stem growth by green-wood cuttings showed a tendency to decrease as the length of the collected cuttings increased, but the survival rate was low. Therefore, modified leafy stem cutting was attempted to increase the survival rate of the cuttings. In the modified leafy stem cutting method, 4 leaves were included in the cuttings, and especially, cuttings were performed using cuttings containing 2-4 cm xylem parts. Leafy stem cutting increased root growth and the number of stems, as well as the survival rate of hybrid poplar clone Bongwha1 compared to green-wood cuttings. The root growth of the leafy stem cutting poplar was better as there was more xylem part. Using two-year-old nursery stocks, the leafy stem cutting was used to produce about 66 cuttings. This study is expected to contribute to the mass propagation of high-quality nursery stocks.
Populus alba x glandulosa shows greater growth performance in the lower part of the hill than in the upper part. In order to study this reason, correlation between the soil factors and the growth was examined. The results were as follows. 1. Annual mean height growth was 1.29m in foot hill but 0.7m in upper part, showing 184$\%$ better growth in the foot hill than in the upper part and the similar situation was shown in the diameter growth. The longer slope distance, the better growth: generally the good growth shows in the first harf of the distance. 2. High positive correlation shows between the growth performance and soil moisture: r=0.76 in the hight and r=0.71 in the diameter, and also positive correlation between soil depth and the growth performance. r=0.65 in the height and r=0.79 in the diameter. On the other hand, negative correlation between the slope and soil depth are considered as limiting factors to the growth. 3. A significant correlation appeared between growth performance and organic matter and between the growth performance and total nitrogen as well. This shows that the nutrient elements were contained much in the foot hill. 4. The correlation between the height growth and potassium, and between the growth and calcium and pH were shown . 5. However, no correlation was shown between the growth and available phosphate, magnesium and available managanese .
