Objective: The study aims to uncover the genetic diversity and unique genetic structure of the Min pig conserved population, divide the nucleus conservation population, and construct the molecular pedigree. Methods: We used KPS Porcine Breeding Chip v1 50K for SNP detection of 94 samples (31♂, 63♀) in the Min pig conserved population from Lanxi breeding Farm. Results: The polymorphic marker ratio (PN), the observed heterozygosity (Ho), and the expected heterozygosity (He) were 0.663, 0.335, and 0.330, respectively. The pedigree-based inbreeding coefficients (FPED) was significantly different from those estimated from runs of homozygosity (FROH) and single nucleotide polymorphism (FSNP) based on genome. The Pearson correlation coefficient between FROH and FSNP was significant (p<0.05). The effective population content (Ne) showed a continuously decreasing trend. The rate of decline was the slowest from 200 to 50 generations ago (r = 0.95), then accelerated slightly from 50 to 5 generations ago (1.40
Base population, intercensal and postcensal population estimates, and population projections have been regularly published as official populations. Base population is usually made out based on census conducted every 5 or 10 years, and is most important from which intercensal, postcensal estimates, and population projections are derived. We investigate how base population in Korea is made out and then compare it with those of other countries. We also present problems arising from making out base population in Korea.

We proposed imputation strategies for the Population and Housing Census 2000 in Korea. The total area of floor space and marital status which have relatively high non-response rates in the Census are considered to develope the effective missing value imputation procedures. The Classification and Regression Tree(CART) is employed to construct the imputation cells for hot-deck imputation, as well as to predict missing value by model-based approach. We compare three imputation methods which include CART model-based imputation, hot-deck imputation based on CART and logical hot-deck imputation proposed by The Korea National Statistical Office. The results suggest that the proposed hot-deck imputation based on CART is very efficient and strongly recommendable.

One of the drawbacks of GA-based structural optimization is that the fitness evaluation of a population of hundreds of individuals requiring hundreds of structural analyses at each CA generation is computational too expensive. Therefore, a parallel genetic algorithm is developed for structural optimization on a cluster of personal computers in this paper. Based on the parallel genetic algorithm, a population at every generation is partitioned into a number of sub-populations equal to the number of slave computers. Parallelism is exploited at sub-population level by allocationg each sub-population to a slave computer. Thus, fitness of a population at each generation can be concurrently evaluated on a cluster of personal computers. For implementation of the algorithm a virtual distributed computing system in a collection of personal computers connected via a 100 Mb/s Ethernet LAN. The algorithm is applied to the minimum weight design of a steel structure. The results show that the computational time requied for serial GA-based structural optimization process is drastically reduced.

We investigated the taxonomic status of the Korean populations of Eurema hecabe (Linnaeus, 1758) based on morphology and nuclear triose phosphate isomerase (Tpi). Up to now, the Korean population of E. hecabe was classified into E. mandarina (de l'Orza, 1869) based on morphological characteristics. A previous study raised the possibility of the Jeju-do population to be E. hecabe based on the color of forewing's fringe. However, morphological examination showed that the Korean population found in southern areas (Gyeonsang and Jeolla provinces), including Jeju-do is E. mandarina. In particular, the external morphology of autumn seasonal type of the Korean population was almost same as the Japanese mainland population, which is known as E. mandarina. Furthermore, sequence analysis of Tpi gene from nine individuals of E. mandarina collected in South Korean localities including Jeju-do clearly showed that all Korean specimens truly belong to E. mandarina.
The main objective of the study is to propose GIS-based methods to assess the population distribution criteria for undesirable facilities such as nuclear power plants. First of all, a review of the relevant criteria was conducted for the official documents compiled by such institutions as IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency), U.S. NRC (Nuclear Regulatory Commission), and some national institutes including the Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety. It is informed from the review that the fundamental principle underlying the various criteria is to maximize the distance between a plant and the nearest population center. It is realized that two interrelated GIS-based techniques need to be devised to put the principle into practice; sophisticated ways of representing population distribution and identifying population centers. A dasymetric areal interpolation is proposed for the former and cell-based and area-based critical density methods are introduced. Grid-based population distributions at various spatial resolutions are created by means of the dasymetric areal interpolation. By applying the critical density methods to the gridded population distribution, some population centers satisfying the population size and density criteria can be identified. These methods were applied to the case of the Gori-1 nuclear power plant and their strengths and limitations were discussed. It was revealed that the assessment results could vary depending upon which method was employed and what values were chosen for various parameters. This study is expected to contribute to foster the applications of methods and techniques developed in geospatial analysis and modeling to the site selection and evaluation.
Purpose - With rapid population aging in Korea, changes in the population structure will result in a rise in the fiscal burden. This paper investigates the effects of population aging on fiscal spending based on Korea's province data and country panel data from the OECD. Research design, data, and methodology - We use province-level fiscal data from Local Finance Integrated Open System and the Korean Statistical Information Service and also collect country panel data from the OECD. To investigate the relationship between population aging and fiscal expenditures, our analysis uses the fixed effects model. Results - The empirical analysis based on Korean local finance and country panel data show that population aging has a positive impact on social welfare expenditures and it also has a positive impact on spending related to children and the elderly, implying that population aging may lead to an increase in fiscal spending via an increase in social welfare expenditures and spending related to children and the elderly. Conclusion - These empirical results suggest that countries like Korea that expect to experience rapid population aging need to pay more attention to prepare for the expected increase in age-related spending in the near future.

Estimation procedure of the finite population proportion and distribution function is considered. Based on a logistic regression model, an approximately model- optimal estimator is defined and conditions for the estimator to be design-consistent are given. Simulation study shows that the model-optimal design-consistent estimator defined under a logistic regression model performs well in estimating the finite population distribution function.

RAPD analysis based on numerous markers have been used to investigate patterns of genetic differentiation ann and within two cultured and wild populations represented by the species crucian carp(Carassius carassius). From RAPD analysis using five primers, a total of 442 polymorphic bands were obtained in two populations and 273 were found to be specific to a wild population. According to RAPD-based estimates, average number of polymorphic bands in wild population was approximately 1.5 times as diverse as that in cultured. The average level of bandsharing values was $0.40 \pm 0.05$ in wild population, but was $0.69 \pm 0.08$ in cultured population, With reference to bandsharing values and banding patterns, wild population was considerably more diverse than cultured population. Knowledge of the genetic diversity of crucian carp should help in formulating more effective strategies for managing this aquacultural fish species.

Estimation of population proportion like the distribution rate of LED TV and the prevalence of a disease are often estimated based on survey sample data. Population proportion is generally considered as a special form of population mean. In complex sampling like stratified multistage sampling with unequal probability sampling, the denominator of mean may be random variable and it is estimated like ratio estimator. In this research, we examined the estimation of distribution rate based on stratified multistage sampling, and determined some numerical outcomes using stratified random sample data with about 25% of missing observations. In the data used for this research, the survey weight was determined by deterministic way. So, the weights are not random variable, and the population distribution rate and its variance estimator can be estimated like population mean estimation. When the weights are not random variable, if one estimates the variance of proportion estimator using ratio method, then the variances may be inflated. Therefore, in estimating variance for population proportion, we need to examine the structure of data and survey design before making any decision for estimation methods.
