Silver-based systems activated by low intensity direct current continue to be investigated as an alternative antimicrobial for infection prophylaxis and treatment. However there has been limited research on the quantitative characterization of the antimicrobial efficacy of such systems. The objective of this study was to develop a semi-mechanistic pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) model providing the quantitative relationship between the critical system parameters and the degree of antimicrobial efficacy. First, time-kill curves were experimentally established for a strain of Staphylococcus aureus in a nutrientrich fluid environment over 48 hours. Based on these curves, a modified PK/PD model was developed with two components: a growing silver-susceptible bacterial population and a depreciating bactericidal process. The test of goodness-of-fit showed that the model was robust and had good predictability ($R^2>0.7$). The model demonstrated that the current intensity was positively correlated to the initial killing rate and the bactericidal fatigue rate of the system while the anode surface area was negatively correlated to the fatigue rate. The model also allowed the determination of the effective range of these two parameters within which the system has significant antimicrobial efficacy. In conclusion, the modified PK/PD model successfully described bacterial growth and killing kinetics when the bacteria were exposed to the electrically activated silver-titanium implant system. This modeling approach as well as the model itself can also potentially contribute to the development of optimal design strategies for other similar antimicrobial systems.
This study aimed to identify the characteristics of fish inhabiting Hapcheon Dam and surrounding rivers and the Bluegill population, an invasive species, and provide basic data. The survey of fish living in Hapcheon Dam and surrounding tributaries in the Ulsan area from 2016 to 2017 identified a total of 1,785 individuals of 30 species of 10 families and identified 8 Korea's endemic species (21.8% indigenization rate), 3 exotic species, and 2 ecosystem disturbance species. The comparison of this study with the past survey showed that 36 species of 12 families were reported in the past survey, but 14 species of them were not found in this study. We believe that a more detailed survey of Lake Hapcheon should identify most of them. The analysis of the length-weight relationship for the Bluegill population, identified as the dominant species in the Hapcheon Lake, showed that a large number of populations was in the stage of rapid growth as a large number of populations aged 1 to 2 years was found. Since the obesity level and the length-weight relationship were confirmed to be in good condition, it was necessary to prepare a plan to control the Bluegill population. We expect that this study's results can be useful data for understanding the growth and trends of the Bluegill population inhabiting the Hapcheon Dam and surrounding rivers.

As agricultural production increases due to population growth, agricultural by-products that are generated at all production stages increase commensurately. Black soldier fly (BSF) (Hermetia illucens) treatment has potential as an environmentally friendly process to combat the environmental pollution caused by agricultural by-products. This study examined the utilization of BSF larvae in the decomposition of the by-products of apples and mandarins, fruits commonly produced in South Korea. The BSF test larvae were fed apple pomace or mandarin waste, and the control larvae were fed calf feed. Larval weight and size were measured at 4-day intervals until larvae reached the pre-pupal stage. Larval development time, survival rate, and BSF fecundity rate were calculated for all three substrates. Waste reduction and bioconversion ratios were also calculated. The developmental time of larvae fed with apple pomace and mandarin waste was greater than that of the control larvae. The average weight of larvae fed with the fruit by-products was less than that of the control. There was no significant difference in the survival rate of BSF larvae or the fecundity rate of BSF between the substrates used in this study. BSF larvae decomposed 48.0% and 61.5% of apple pomace and mandarin waste, respectively. The bioconversion efficiency rates of BSF larvae fed with apple pomace and mandarin waste were 9.1% and 12.1%, respectively. These results indicated that decomposition of single fruit by-products by BSF larvae is an environmentally friendly and effective bioconversion process.
We studied the effect of inoculation of microorganisms known to produce plant growth promoting substances, on the growth and yield of cucumber(Cucumis sativa L.), through a field experiment. The microorganisms used were isolated from the forest soil and consisted of Micrococus sp., Baccilus sustilis, Enterobacter agglomerans, Baccilus megaterium, Pseudomonas putida, Cellulomonas sp. and Staphylococus xyposus. Fotr the multiplication, microorganisms were cultured in liquid media of Pseudomonas P and Sabouraud dextrose. Inoculation of microorganisms was done by spraying the culture media after the culture of them to soil and cucumber plants, three times during the growth of cucumber at the rate of 10l/ha. The inoculation of microorganisms tended to promote the growth of cucumber plant and increase the yield of it. No sign of significant improvement of soil chemical and physical properties were observed after the harvest of crop. The population of bacteria and actinomycetes tended to be higher in the inoculated plots than in not inoculated plots, while opposite was the case in the population of fungi.
In the event a population of animals is exposed to ionizing radiation, proper disposition of animals will minimize loss to the farmer and protect the public from unwholesome meat and dairy products. Clinical response is an important factor in considering salvage of animals for food following exposure to ionizing radiation whether the dose is lethal or not. It is the purpose of this report to present the discussions of blood picture and growth of y ung growing rabbits exposed to cobalt-60 gamma-irradiation. The experimental animals were Hyrnalayan rabbits of 65 days old. The body weight for all animals of the time of irradiation was approximately 450g. The 96 rabbits used in the experiment were allotted t groups of eight. Rabbits in one group served as controls and the others were exposed to single doses of 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600 and 700 Roentgens (R). The exposure does rate averaged 15 R per minute. Central blood was obtained by heart puncture. Erythrocyte and leukocyte enumerations and, determinations of hemoglobin in blood and hematocrit value were made in the usual manner. Erythrocyte counts, concentrations of hemoglobin in blood, and hematocrit readings dropped to the lowest value between 1 and 4 weeks postirradiation, returning towards the control values. But recovery was not complete at the time of the last determination on 6 weeks postirradiation. There was a progressive decrease with increasing radiation does in the above values. Mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration were not affected by the irradiation. After irradiation of each does the numbers of total leukocyte and the absolute numbers of various types of white cell began to decrease rapidly, and reached a minimum after 2 weeks, returning towards normal levels. But recovery was not complete at the time of the last determination on 6 weeks postirradiation. The reductions in total leukocyte and differential counts as the radiation does increases were apparent. Relative neutrophilia was observed in each irradiated group because of more expense of lymphocytes after irradiation. Growth rate of the rabbits was not affected by 100 R of whloe-body irradiation, while rabbits irradiated with 200, 300, 400 and 500 R showed marked depression of growth rate. As the radiation does increases, a depression of growth rate was apparent. The rabbits exposed to 600 and 700 R ceased from growing and recovery was not recognized during the experimental period.
Although the majority of elderly are residentially stable, many western studies have recently reported that there has been a gradual growth of retirement migration. However, little is known about that in Korea. Therefore, this study intended to examine the trend and nature of elderly migration. For this purpose, inter- and intra-province migration among the aged 65 and over were analyzed, using the migration data of the Korea National Statistical Office, compiled from the 2000 and 2006 resident registration records. The results were as follows. First, there was an increase of elderly migrants to 531 thousand persons in 2006 from 383 thousand persons in 2000. Secondly, the migration rate of elderly has steadily grown with a 11.7% in 2000 and 12% in 2006. Also, the move of female among old population was active but this trend tended to decrease in 2006. Thirdly, the number of provinces which showed a positive net inter-province migration of old population increased from 7 provinces in 2000 to 8 provinces in 2006. Fourthly, we found that the destinations of elderly migrants were mostly neighboring province except the Chungnam, Jeonbuk, and Jeju. These results suggested that elderly migration would be expected to increase gradually and be important in the future of Korea.
According to data from the national office of Statistics Korea and Ministry of Health and Welfare, as the elderly population increases, the dementia elderly population continues to increase and its future population growth rate is expected to be even faster. In particular, the Dementia Management Act has been in effect since February 2012, and active efforts has been made for a policy for the dementia management. The purpose of this study is to establish standards on building plans based on the appropriate scale and spatial configuration on facilities planning for the elderly with dementia. Specifically, the basic data were collected with a request for a total of 103 points on the basis of a database of group homes in the survey managed by the Japan Association of Group Homes. Specific information of the research includes the management body of facilities operation, scale of the facilities, number of units and configuration of personal living space, and the collected survey data and drawings were statistically proceed and analyzed using the SPSS WIN 20.0. analysis results are summarized as follows. first, most of the group homes come to the small size of the 1-2 story home ; the approximate number of units is one or two per home, and each unit consists of nine rooms. second, a number of group homes with the building area of $300m^2$ have the U-shaped arrangement which is advantageous in the extension and facilities maintenance. In conclusion, this study is to be the fundamental data for judgments that can be used to establish standards for the facilities for the dementia elderly whose population continues to increase. In addition, further study is necessary to establish suitable design conditions of our country.
This paper presents a review of dairy goat production in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) from 2010- 2017, its current state, constraints and prospects for research and development. Since the introduction of dairy goats in SSA in pre-colonial times, their populations have continued to increase due to declining land size as a result of land fragmentation and increasing demand for goat milk. The current goat population in SSA is 372,716,040 head of which only 15.98% used for milk production. Populations in the Eastern and Western regions of SSA have shown an increasing trend from 2010 to 2017. The Southern Africa goat population is on the decline at an annual rate of about 1.77% whereas Central Africa has had a constant goat population within the same period. Eastern Africa reported the highest increase in the population of goats used for milk production. Milk production was highest in Eastern Africa and lowest in Southern Africa. However, dairy goat productivity remained constant in the Eastern region throughout the review period. Dairy goats are mainly raised under smallholder mixed crop-livestock systems. To enhance the development of the dairy goat, concerted efforts should be made to alleviate the constraints that stifle its growth. These constraints can be categorized into nutrition and feeding, breeding and reproduction, diseases, parasites, climate change, and underdeveloped dairy goat products market. Effective management of dairy goats requires a holistic approach and there is the need to expand the markets by further sensitization on the nutritional and medicinal advantages of dairy goat products. In order to achieve rapid development in the dairy goat sub sector, research and development initiatives should be directed towards alleviating the hurdles in nutrition and feeding, breeding, animal health and resilience as well as dairy goat markets.
In order to anticipate disease pattern and health problems of Koreans in the 1st part of 21st century (by the year 2020), transition of population characteristics, mortality and morbidity data during the last 30 years Koreans have experienced were reviewed. On the actual basis of epidemiologic transition process that has undergone during last 30 years since 1960 along with socioeconomic development and successful implementation of selective national health policies (family planning, medical insurance and etc.), following changes can be expected in the 21st century in Korea, under the assumption that the current rate of progress is maintained. The population of South Korea alone will be doubled the population of 1960 by the year 2013 : aged Population older than 65 years will be increased from 3.3% in 1960 to 11.4% in 2020 with increased average age of the population from 23.6 year in 1970 to 39.2 year in 2020; urban population from 28% in 1960 to 83% in 2005. GNP/capita has increased tremendously from U.S. $120 in 1970 to $6,749 in 1992, and the government estimated it would be 519,350 in 2010 and $29,460 in 2020. Growth and developmental indices of children, educational achievement and social status of women also showed a remarkable improvement and anticipated to make futher progress. Leading causes of mortality and morbidity have shown a striking change during the last 30 years, from infectious diseases to chronic degenerative diseases and man-made injuries. Occurrence of communicable diseases may become minimal although viral hepatitis, venereal diseases Including AIDS, and well adapted herpes virus infections will maintain their endemic level. Newly evolving infectious agents, however, should be carefully monitored because of rapidly changing environments and human behaviours. Tuberculosis may increase up to the epidemic level when AIDS prevails. Ischemic heart diseases may increase steadily with increasing occurrence of hypertension and diabetes mellitus whereas cerebrovascular diseases may be decreased slowly. Musculaskeletal diseases which contribute a lot to the disability of aged people may be a major health problems due to increased aged population. Mental diseases, particularly that caused by alcohol and drug abuse, and senile dementia may become a prominent health problem. On the other hand injuries caused by traffic and industrial accidents that have shown most striking increase till now may be decreased considerably by intensive intervention. The health policies in the 21st century will be oriented to the health promotion for good quality life rather than life-savings.
Toxicity assessment of heavy metals (As, Cr and Pb) has been investigated by using the rate of survival and population growth(r) of marine rotifer, Brachionus plicatilis. The survival rate was determined after 24 hours of exposure to As, Cr and Pb. As and Cr reduced survival rate in dose-dependent manner and a significant reduction were occurred at concentration of greater than 30 and $150mg\;L^{-1}$, but Pb had no effect on survival rate. The r was determined after 72 hours of exposure to As, Cr and Pb. As, Cr and Pb reduced r in dose-dependent manner and a significant reduction were occurred at concentration of greater than 5, 25 and $50mg\;L^{-1}$. The toxicity of heavy metals were ranked As>Cr>Pb, with $EC_{50}$ values of 12.98, 82.34 and $110.14mg\;L^{-1}$, respectively. The no-observed-effect-concentration (NOEC) of r in As, Cr and Pb exposure were 1, 12.5 and $50mg\;L^{-1}$, respectively. The lowest-observed-effect-concentration (LOEC) of r in As, Cr and Pb exposure were 5, 25, and $50mg\;L^{-1}$, respectively. From the results, the concentration of As, Cr and Pb (greater than 5, 25 and $50mg\;L^{-1}$, respectively) have toxic effect on the r of B. plicatilis in natural ecosystems. These results (including NOEC and $EC_{50}$) might be useful for the mixing toxicity assessment and toxic guide line of heavy metals in marine ecosystems.
