  • Social media has become a popular source of information around the world. Previous studies explored different trends of social media news consumption. However, no studies have focused on Bangladesh to date, where social media penetration is very high in recent years. To fill this gap, this research aimed to understand its popularity trends during the period. For that reason, this work analyzes 97.67 million page likes and 3.48 billion interaction data collected from nine Bangladeshi news media's Facebook pages between December 2016 to November 2020. The analysis shows that the growth rates of page likes and interaction rates declined during this period. It suggests that the media's Facebook pages are gradually losing their popularity among Facebook users, which may have two more interpretations: Facebook's aggregate appeal as a news source is decreasing to users, or Bangladeshi media's appeal is eroding to Facebook users. These findings challenge the previous results, i.e., Facebook's demand as a news source is increasing with time. We offer four explanations of the decreased popularity of Facebook's news: information overload, exposure to incidental news, users' selective exposure and different aims of using Facebook, and conflict between media agendas and users' interests. Some theoretical and practical significance of the results has been discussed as well.

  • Huge amounts of various web items such as keywords, images, and web pages are being made widely available on the Web. The popularities of such web items continuously change over time, and mining temporal patterns in popularities of web items is an important problem that is useful for several web applications. For example, the temporal patterns in popularities of search keywords help web search enterprises predict future popular keywords, enabling them to make price decisions when marketing search keywords to advertisers. However, presence of millions of web items makes it difficult to scale up previous techniques for this problem. This paper proposes an efficient method for mining temporal patterns in popularities of web items. We treat the popularities of web items as time-series, and propose gapmeasure to quantify the similarity between the popularities of two web items. To reduce the computation overhead for this measure, an efficient method using the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) is presented. We assume that the popularities of web items are not necessarily following any probabilistic distribution or periodic. For finding clusters of web items with similar popularity trends, we propose to use a density-based clustering algorithm based on the gap measure. Our experiments using the popularity trends of search keywords obtained from the Google Trends web site illustrate the scalability and usefulness of the proposed approach in real-world applications.

  • The purpose of this study was to trace the development of Chintz pattern design through fashion history, and to focus on its application in modern times with special emphasis on filtered Chintz patterns. Chintz patterns use such motives as tree, animal, bird, and geometrical shapes, etc.. It reached the peak of its popularity with William Morris. His influence continued from the end of the 19th century through to the 20th century. Modern Chintz designs have been modified and diversified in different cultures through time, and such diversification & changes can be easily found in modern fashion. From previous studies and other related sources, we found that Chintz patterns were revived in modern fashion trends with some modification. We also discovered the importance of chintz pattern designs in ethnic and retro trends. Thus in conclusion, this study revealed the significance, flexibility, and lasting popularity of Chintz pattern designs in fashion history.

  • One of the emerging trends in the marketing field is digital video marketing. Online videos offer rich content typically containing more information than any other type of content (e.g., audible or textual content). Accordingly, previous researchers have examined factors influencing videos' popularity. However, few studies have examined what causes a video to remain popular. Some videos achieve continuous, ongoing popularity, while others fade out quickly. For practitioners, videos at the recommendation slots may serve as strong communication channels, as many potential consumers are exposed to such videos. So,this study will provide practitioners important advice regarding how to choose videos that will survive as long-lasting favorites, allowing them to advertise in a cost-effective manner. Using deep learning techniques, this study extracts text from videos and measured the videos' tones, including factual and emotional tones. Additionally, we measure the aesthetic score by analyzing the thumbnail images in the data. We then empirically show that the cognitive features of a video, such as the tone of a message and the aesthetic assessment of a thumbnail image, play an important role in determining videos' long-term popularity. We believe that this is the first study of its kind to examine new factors that aid in ensuring a video remains popular using both deep learning and econometric methodologies.

  • This paper proposes a new reference model that can represent data access with temporal locality and popularity bias. Among existing reference models, the LRU-stack model can express temporal locality, which is a characteristic that the more recently referenced data has, the higher the probability of being referenced again. However, it cannot take into account differences in popularity of the data. Conversely, the independent reference model can reflect the different popularity of data, but has the limitation of not being able to model changes in data reference trends over time. The reference model presented in this paper overcomes the limitations of these two models and has the feature of reflecting both the popularity bias of data and their changes over time. This paper also examines the relationship between the cache replacement algorithm and the reference model, and shows the optimality of the proposed model.

  • Deep neural networks (DNNs) are widely used in various domains such as speech and image recognition. DNN software frameworks such as Tensorflow and Caffe contributed to the popularity of DNN because of their easy programming environment. In addition, many companies are developing neuromorphic processing units (NPU) such as Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) and Graphical Processing Units (GPUs) to improve the performance of DNN processing. However, there is a large gap between NPUs and DNN software frameworks due to the lack of framework support for various NPUs. A bridge for the gap is a DNN software platform including DNN optimized compilers and DNN libraries. In this paper, we review the technical trends of DNN software platforms.

  • Popular in the 1990s, Western Minimalism declined in popularity in the end of the century while the Oriental Mysticism and the Oriental Minimalism called “Zen Style” appeared. Fusion and Oriental Minimalism, both of which pursue traditional beauty and the essence of functionality and beauty, are combined with Japanese elements. As Oriental Minimalism is oriented towards Japan and China, we should consider the Japanese modernization process. Japan internationalized their own traditional elements after modernization. On the other hand, we only focus on tradition in a view of modernity, Japan developed their own culture whereas we followed the Western influences and trends after our culture and social structure were destroyed because of the civil war. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to find out the possibility of culture variety in interior design from the Japanese samples which modernized their culture in various sights. In other words, I researched and analyzed the expressive trends in Japanese Contemporary interior design, architecture and similarity and difference between Korea and Japan.

  • International arbitration as a dispute resolution mechanism in Asia is growing in popularity. Singapore has long been acknowledged as a regional arbitration center but Korea is now facing an increased demand as an arbitration center as well. As Singapore competes with Hong Kong and other international arbitration centers, and as Korea tries to become an alternative to Singapore, both Singapore and Korea have updated their arbitral laws and arbitration rules to reflect the current international arbitration trends. This paper examines the recent changes in the arbitration laws of Singapore and Korea, with an emphasis on recent changes in Korean arbitration laws that are designed to increase Korea's popularity as a regional arbitration center. Though Korea's reputation as an arbitration center is increasing, it is still not viewed as a major arbitration service provider. It is against this backdrop that Korea's international arbitration laws and rules will be viewed, with suggested changes to increase Korea's reputation as not only a regional hub but a center of international arbitration.
