The two-month-old rooted-cuttings of Populus alba ${\times}$ glandulosa, P. euramericana and P. nigra ${\times}$ maximowiczii clones were exposed to livestock waste water - one of major water pollutants, and ground water in order to determine the effects of livestock waste water on growth response and absorption capacity of the species. For this purpose, 5 clones of each species were used. In all the species, the height growth of rooted-cuttings was better in livestock waste water treatment than in ground water. Of all the poplar species compared, the height growth was best in P. alba ${\times}$ glandulosa. In the cases of P. euramericana and P. nigra ${\times}$ maximowiczii, the height growth in the livestock waste water treatment was statistically different among clones, whereas there was no significant difference among P. alba ${\times}$ glandulosa clones. Aboveground biomass such as leaf and shoot dry weight of all the species increased in the livestock waste water treatment, while root dry weight decreased. In addition, chlorophyll contents in leaf of all the poplar species increased in the livestock waste water treatment. All the poplar trees showed temporal variation in the absorption amount of livestock waste water during the experimental period. In all the poplar species, the absorption amount of livestock waste water was less than that of ground water. Of 3 poplar species, P. alba ${\times}$ glandulosa was best in the absorption capacity of livestock waste water. Of all 15 poplar clones compared in this study, the 72-16 clone of P. alba ${\times}$ glandulosa showed the best absorption capacity.
There are many countries having a long history of exotic tree introduction from different countries and several countries including New Zealand, Brazil and Hungary have successfully introduced exotic trees. Korea's tree breeding program for introduction of exotic tree was originally started from 1924. Records reveal that hundreds of tree species were introduced from many countries and tested their germination and viability. About 415 introductions were eliminated since they had been introduced and tested. Subsequently, seven exotic trees that proved successful in trials and plantations have planted for afforestation. Simultaneously, several promising exotic trees are still under the test. In this paper, we will succinctly review and evaluate their comparative growth performance of the exotic trees in the plantation programs of the country to coping with climate change.
Black locust(Robinia pseudoacacia) and poplar(Populus alba ${\times}$ glandulosa) trees were collected, extracted with acetone-$H_2O$(7:3, v/v) after drying, fractionated with hexane, chloroform and ethylacetate, and freeze dried to get some brown powder. Each fraction of the powder was chromatographed on a Sephadex LH-20 column using a series of aqueous methanol and ethanol-hexane mixture as eluting solvents. The wood extractives of black locust contained (+)-leucorobinetinidin as flavan, robtin as flavanone and dihydrorobinetin as flavanonol, and robinetin as flavonol. The poplar bark extractives contained various kinds of phenolic compounds : (+)-catechin as flavan, naringeoin, eriodictyol, sakuranetin, aromadendrin and taxifolin as flavanonol, salireposide as salicin derivative, and minor compounds such as aesculin and p-coumaric acid. However, aesculin has not been reported as a constituent of the poplar bark in Korea yet. NMR and FAB-MS analyses were done to elucidate the structures of isolated phenolic constituents.
The first step to utilize the growing resources of Italian poplar (Populus euramericana I-476) for pulp-Woods, its characteristics and adaptabilities to the pulp industry must be investigated completely. The plantation methods are important for its fast growing in stock, and no less important is the cutting age for its utilization as pulpwood. In this paper, the stone groundwood pulping, refiner groundwood pulping and chemi-groundwood pulping characteristics by the age of tree, along with their physical and chemical characterstics were tested, and relationships between the age groups were analyzed to find out the optimum felling age. The results obtained are as follows: 1. The coefficient of pliability was a little higher in the case of younger trees. 2. The water retention value of each pulp was directly proportional to its physical strength, but this tendency was not detected between the age groups of sample woods. 3. Generally, the physical strength of younger wood pulp was lower regardless of the pulping process. But in the case of pretreatment with NaOH, Asphund and CGP pulp from 5 year old sample wood were stronger in physical strengths than those of GP and Asplund pulp with no pretreatment from 10 years old sample wood. 4. The tear factor of Asplund pulp with alkali pretreatment was higher than that of CGP pulp but the breaking length and the burst factor was similar in all processes. Considering the pulp yield and its brightness, CGP process seems to be advantageous. 5. The dissimilarity of physical strength between 7 and 10 years old wood pulp was not very large in all pulping processes but the physical strength of 5 year old wood pulp was very weak. In the of groundwood pulping from Italian poplar woods, 5 year old wood pulp should be mixed with other long fiber pulp for making a good paper.
The peroxidase activity was localized cytochemically to get an insight into its precise function in lignin biosynthesis. In this work, cerium chloride ($CeCl_3$) was used as a trapping agent for hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$) generated from peroxidase. Seasonal variation of peroxidase activities in cambial region of Populus, Pinus, and Ginkgo was investigated at subcellular levels. Under transmission electron microscopy, electron dense deposits of cerium perhydroxide formed by reaction with $H_2O_2$ were observed in cambium and its immediate derivatives. The staining with $CeCl_3$ in cambium varied with growth seasons. The strongest $H_2O_2$ accumulation, regardless of tree species, appeared in May. Staining pattern of $CeCl_3$ in the cambium of poplar indicated that the production of peroxidase started in March before the opening of buds and reached the highest in May and then declined in August. Ginkgo and Pinus showed relatively late generation of $H_2O_2$ production when compared with Populus. Although Ginkgo and Pinus are classified into gymnosperms, however, the generation of peroxidase production and its duration was different from each other. Little staining appeared in all the tree samples collected in September before falling the leaves.
The yellow poplar is an appropriate species for the age of low carbon green growth, because its absorption rates of ozone is greatly excellent, and also the absorption rates of carbon dioxide causing climate changes is very remarkable. The yellow poplar, which is a kind of rapid growth tree, shows a lack of performance as a structural member, however, it is suitable to use a variety of purposes like furniture materials, interior materials, plywood materials, and so on. In this study, the structural size skin-timbers were made by using the yellow poplar, and the compressive capacity was evaluated, also the numerical model was developed for the various uses. The rectangular shape skin-timber presented a good performance by showing 56.3% residual strength about the solid material. In case of the cylinder shape skin-timber showed a possibility to use diversely as a furniture material, as well as a structural uses, because almost 50% compressive capacity of material even though its residual area rates was 25%. Both rectangular shape and the cylinder shape represented that 'Brooming or end rolling' were the major failure mode, and partly splitting failure mode. The compressive capacity of the rectangular shape which residual area rates was large was higher than the cylinder shape, but it did not show statistical significance about the compressive capacity between them. Thus, it will be possible to use them mixed for a convenience of users. The result of the numerical analysis model was quite similar to actual test of the compressive capacity. Therefore, the yellow poplar can be utilized in the development of various uses by applying numerical analysis model about a variety of shapes and dimensions.
One-year-old yellow-poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera L.) and sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua L.) seedlings were exposed to 0.10 ${\mu}l/l\;O_3$and simulated acid rain at pH 3.0 for ten consecutive weeks. Shoot height growth (SHG), fresh weight (FWT), dry weight (DWT), apparent plastochron duration (APD) and foliar nutrient concentrations were measured. None of growth measurements, except the apparent plastochron duration (APD), were significantly affected by any treatment in yellow-poplar seedlings. APD was approximately 30% higher in seedlings exposed to $0.1{\mu}l/l\;O_3$ + pH 5.6 solution than any other treatment. Ozone significantly reduced SHG of sweetgum seedlings by 24% at the end of the ten-week fumigation. There were also significant effects of single and combined effects of ozone and simulated acid rain on APD in sweetgum. APD was significantly increased by 19.8% and 25.7% in seedlings exposed to $0.1{\mu}l/l\;O_3$ and pH 5.6 solution, respectively, and resulted in 46.1% higher APD in seedlings exposed to $0.1{\mu}l/l\;O_3$ + pH 5.6 solution compared with seedlings exposed to $0.0{\mu}l/l\;O_3$ + pH 3.0 solution. Phosphorus and sulphur were significantly greater in seedlings exposed to simulated rain at pH 3.0 compared with pH 5.6 for both species. Foliar S concentration was higher in seedlings exposed to $0.0{\mu}l/l\;O_3$ + pH 3.0 than in seedlings exposed to any other treatment in sweetgum. Ozone significantly increased Ca in sweetgum seedlings, however, ozone reduced Ca in yellow-poplar. Ozone also reduced S and Mg in sweetgum seedlings.
In order to evaluate a feasibility of industrial art use of veneer such as cylindrical laminated veneer lumber, the veneers of 4 species of Korean pine, radiata pine, yellow poplar and Japanese cypress were natural dye-colored and clear finished. Natural dyes were red color originated from sappanwood, blue color from polygonum indigo, and yellow color from Amur cork tree and gardenia. the clear coats of crack seal clear and UV protection oil were applied on the dyed veneer. The dyeing and finishing characteristics through fading test were summarized as follows; In non-dyed and non-finished Korean pine veneer, lightness was decreased and yellow and red hues increased after fading test. In natural dyed- and finished-veneer, color difference of gardenia-mixed Amur cork tree was generally highest, and that of polygonum indigo was lowest. Compared to non-treatment of veneers of Korean pine and yellow poplar, color difference decreasing effect by finishing was shown in crack seal clear and UV protection oil. In addition, UV protection oil was more favorable than crack seal clear with more decreased color difference. In result, maximum values of color difference after fading for 8 days were recorded about 16 to 20, which are remarked 'very much' of 12.1 or more when reviewing with 'National bureau of standards unit in USA'.
To effectively modify tree function with genetic engineering, transgenes must be expressed at the proper level in the appropriate tissues at suitable developmental stages. Toward understanding the spatial and temporal expression of transgenes in woody plants, transgene expression was evaluated in three greenhouse-grown, transgenic lines of Populus alba ${\times}$ P. grandidentata hybrid clone 'Hansen'. All transgenic poplar lines possess constructs containing the bacterial nopaline synthase(nos) promoter linked to a neomycin phosphotransferase II(NPT II) selectable marker gene. In addition, each transgenic poplar line contains one of the following gene constructs : 1) a wound-inducible potato proteinase inhibitor II (pin2) promoter linked to a chloramphenicol acetyltransferase(CAT) reporter gene. 2) a nos promoter linked to a PIN2 structural gene : or 3) a Cauliflower Mosaic Virus 35s promoter linked to a PIN2 structural gene. Polymerase chain reaction(PCR) was used to verify the presence of foreign genes in the poplar genome. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays(ELISAs) were used to evaluate organ specific expression of the nos-NPT II construct. NPT II expression was detected in leaves, petioles, stems, and roots of transgenic poplar, thereby indicating that the nos promoter is potentially effective for general constitutive expression of transgenes. NPT expression varied among transgenic poplar lines and among organs for one transgenic line, Tr15. With Tr15, NPT II levels were highest in older leaves and petioles. These results indicate that screening of several transgenic lines may be required to identify lines with optimal transgene expression.

This study was conducted to estimate aboveground biomass and nitrogen storage potential of tree species-eight clones of a poplar and hybrids, one clone of Salix alba L., dawn redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides Hu and W.C. Cheng), yellow poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera L.), Okamoto maple (Acer okamotoanum Nakai), and pin oak (Quercus palustris $M{\ddot{u}}nchh.$)- after treating with liquid pig manure. Stems showed the highest percentage of aboveground biomass, and followed by branches and leaves. Nitrogen content in aboveground biomass components was the highest in leaves, and followed by branches and stems. Average aboveground biomass production was higher in the clones and species treated with manure than those of not treated, 30 ton/ha and 16 ton/ha, respectively. In the manure-treated site, clone 'Dorskamp' of Populus deltoides${\times}$Populus nigra showed the highest aboveground biomass (48.3 ton/ha). Average nitrogen storage potential was superior in the clones and species treated with manure than those of not treated, 159 kg/ha and 90 kg/ha, respectively. Clone 'Dorskamp' also showed the greatest nitrogen storage potential (286.5 kg/ha) among tested tree species. Therefore, 'Dorskamp' is the most suitable clone for treating liquid pig manure, but additional studies are needed to determine any damages or tolerance from the treatment.
