This study was carried out to investigate natural insectifuge materials from tree extractives in order to substitute for organic synthetic insecticides for food wrapping corrugated board. Tree samples were collected, extracted, fractionated with hexane, $CH_2Cl_2$, ethylacetate(EtOAc) and $H_2O$, and then freezed dried for further study. EtOAc or $H_2O$ fractions were chromatographed on a Sephadex LH-20 column for isolation and purification, and the isolated compounds were characterized by spectroscopic tools such as NMR and MS. Crude extractives of EtOAc and $H_2O$ fractions were added to the printing ink for corrugated board with the concentration of 2% or 3% based on the weight of the ink, then the prepared ink was printed on the corrugated board to be used for evasion test using larva of indian meal moth(Plodia interpunctella(Hubner)). Robtin, dihydrorobinetin and leucorobinetinidin were isolated from the wood extractives of black locust(Robinia pseudoacacia) and the bark of poplar(Populus alba $\times$ glandulosa) contained many kinds of compounds such as (+)-catechin, naringenin, aromadendrin, eriodictyol, sakuranetin and its glycoside, taxifolin, neosaturanin, salireposide, p-coumaric acid and aesculin. Much of (+)-catechin was isolated from the bark extractives of willow(Salix koreensis) in addition to (+)-gallocatechin and p-coumaric acid and the bark of weeping willow(Salix babylonica) also contained (+)-catechin, (+)-gallocatechin, dihydromyricetin and myricetin.
Studies were made to optimize the media composition and cultural condition for mycelial growth of Agrocybe cylindracea. Sawdust spawn of media composition for optimal growth was found to be pine sawdust combination of 30% wheat bran and poplar sawdust combination of 20% corn bran were the best of the optimal combination. The optimal concentration of white sugar was 1.0~1.5%. The nitrogen sources was found to be yeast extract and soybean powder. Also, optimal concentration were $0.7g/{\ell}$ and $0.1g/{\ell}$, respectively. The mineral sources of optimal medium compositions were $MgSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O\;0.3g/{\ell}$, $KH_2PO_4\;0.5g/{\ell}$ and $K_2HPO\;1.2g/{\ell}$. Optimal amount of inoculum for cultivation of A. cylindracea were $20{\sim}25g/850m{\ell}$ and $25m{\ell}/850m{\ell}$ in the sawdust spawn and liquid spawn, respectively.
Various enzymes produced by the Basidiomycetes, i.e. Pleurotus ostreatus, Pholiota nameko and Flammulina velutipes have been analysed. The purpose of the analyses is to produce a nutritious fertilizer from saw dust, sweet potato stems, corn stems and barley stems which are known as the farm product waste materials. The results of the analyses are as follows: 1. In order for P. ostreatus, Pho. nameko and F. velutipes to grow properly, the saw dust of broad-leaved trees, poplar and chestnut were mixed with sweet-potato stems, corn stems and barley straws at the ratio of $42{\sim}49\;:\;30$, and then to this mixture was added rice bran at the ratio of $18{\sim}35\;:\;30$ The following proved to be optimum conditions for the growth in this test: the parcentage of water content $60{\sim}70%$, $24{\sim}26^{\circ}C$ degrees of temperature. 2. We analyzed the fiber contained in the above materials after 20 days growth in various media. We found out that the fiber was decomposed up to $47{\sim}50%$ and polysaccharified. Lignin was decomposed up to $20{\sim}25%$ and about three times as much protein was contained in the product as in the original materials. 3. Our analyses revealed the possibility of producing concentrated feed from the crude fiber.

The purpose of this study is to sort out the plants in "The Book of Songs", and to analyze the cultural significance of plants from the viewpoint of the symbolic elements and the landscape elements in the 3~11 century BC. The conclusions are as follows. First, there were 147 plant names and 136 plant species in "The Book of Songs", and these results can confirm that the plants were existed in the 3~11 century BC. Second, through analyzing the cultural significance of the plants, cattail, lotus, etc. are the symbol of lovers; peony and willow are the symbol of farewell; bamboo is the symbol of gentleman; and Japanese pepper is the symbol of fecundity. Third, at the viewpoint of the landscape elements, the poplar, dwarf elm, etc. can be used as a place of affection; reed and nepenthe can make a place of melancholy, hazel and chestnut tree, etc. can make a place of power and position, celery and water shield etc. can be used as a place of knowledge. Based on the research of "The Book of Songs", it can help to understand the plants culture in 3~11 century BC, and it will be a useful information for the plant design.
An effective micropropagation system for Liriodendron tulipifera L via somatic embryogenesis was established using immature seeds. Immature seeds from five individual trees were bisected longitudinally and cultured on two basal media (MS and B5) containing different combinations of 2,4-D and TDZ to induce callus and embryogenic tissue under light ($40{\mu}mol\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$, 16 hr/day) or complete darkness at $25{\pm}2^{\circ}C$. There was no distinctive difference on callus and embryogenic tissue induction between the two basal media with PGRs. Optimum culture medium appeared to be MS medium supplemented with 1.0mg/L 2,4-D and 0.01mg/L TDZ plus 3% sucrose. Nonembryogenic callus induction rate was not significantly different among the genotypes. However, However, the embryogenic callus induction frequency differed greatly by the genotypes ranging from 55% to 72% when cultured in the dark. Generally, the cultures maintained in the dark tended to show normal somatic embryo development as well as embryogenic tissue formation and this was confirmed by histological examination. Above results suggest that a proper selection of mother tree and dark culture condition are necessary to optimize somatic embryogenesis system of Liriodendron tulipifera.
This study was conducted to produce herbicide resistant plants by transferring phosphinothricin acetyltransferase (PAT) gene into Populus alba $\times$ Populus glandulosa No .3 using Agrobacterium tumefaciens MP 90/PAT. Leaf segments from in vitro grown shoots of hybrid poplar No. 3 were soaked in a AB medium containing Agrobacterium tumefaciens MP 90/PAT for 10 min and cocultivated for 2 days on MS medium containing 1.0 mg/L 2,4-D and 0.2mg/L kinetin (CIM). Putative transformed calli could be selected after cocultivation of leaf segments on CIM supplemented with 50mg/L kanamycin and 500mg/L cefotaxime for 3 weeks. The selected calli were cultured on CIM supplemented with 50 mg/L kanamycin and 500 mg/L cefotaxime for 5~8 weeks before transfer to WPM containing 1.0mg/L zeatin, 0.1mg/L BAP, 50 mg/L kanamycin and 500mg/L cefotaxime for shoot regeneration. Shoots were regenerated from the callus after 4 week cultivation, and the regenerants were grown on the same medium for 7~l0 weeks. The plants rooted on 1/2 WPM containing 0.2 mg/L IBA and 50 mg/L kanamycin. To confirm the gene insertion into plants, GUS activity was detected by histochemical assay in the transformed plants. Finally, the presence of both NPT II and PAT genes from the transgenic plants were confirmed by PCR amplification with the gene specific primers and subsequent PCR-Southern blot with DIG-labeled PAT gene probe. After acclimatization in pots for 4 weeks, the plants were sprayed by 3 mL/L of Basta to test resistance to the herbicide. The transgenic plants remained green, whereas all the control plants died after one week.
We analysed the current status of development of GM crops and national biosafety framework including legislation-related agricultural GMO in China to provide the policy for the development of global GM crops in Korea. In China, several GM crops including cotton, petunia, tomato, sweet pepper, poplar, and papaya have been approved for commercialization and they have been cultivated at more than 4 million ha. In addition, GM rice and GM maize have also obtained approval for productive testing in 2009. China will be the first country to approve GM rice for commercialization. Prior to commercialization in China, all GM crops must be approved by government authority for biosafety assessment specified by national legislation including restricted field testing, enlarged field testing, productive testing and safety certificate. According to China's legislation, agricultural GMOs have been classified by research and testing, production and processing. All GMOs must go through 3 steps of field testing (restricted, enlarged and productive). Prior to conducting each field testing, it has to be approved by government authority. It is assumed that at least one to two years will be taken for each step of field testing (total 4 to 8 years to obtain the final safety certificate) along with a large amount of budget.
Effects of paper mill sludge-fertilizers were investigated on the growth performances of tree seedlings under field conditions. Two types of sludge-fertilizers applied were an organic sludge compost and a processed sludge-pellet fertilizer strengthened with several components of organic and inorganic nutrients. Three species of tree seedlings studied were ibota privet(Ligustrum obtusifolium) and yellow poplar(Liriodendron tulipifera) of 1-0 year seedlings and also eastern white pine(Pinus strobus) of 2-2 year seedlings. Nitrogen and phosphorus contents of plot soil treated with sludge compost+sludge-pellet fertilizer+sludge-pellet fertilizer plot were increased to 8 times and 2.6 times as those of control plot, respectively. The growth performances of root collar diameter and seedling height were repeatedly measured up to five times through the growing season and the results were analyzed statistically by analysis of variance of randomized block design and Duncan's multiple range test. The growth performances of dry weight were measured after last fifth measurements.

Two fungal strains were isolated from rods of Quercus sp. (NAAS02335) and Pinus densiflora (NAAS05299) in Korea. These strains were identified as Gyrodontium sacchari by their morphological and mycological characteristics. The optimal growth temperature of NAAS02335 and NAAS05299 are $25^{\circ}C$ and $30^{\circ}C$, respectively. Production of cellulase, xylanase, and ligninase was tested on agar media supplemented dyes or substrates. Production of cellulase and xylanase of NAAS05299 was higher than those of NAAS02335, however ligninase activity of NAAS02335 was higher than that of NAAS05299. The activities of cellulase, xylanase, and amylase of strain NAAS05299 were estimated at 6.7~10.2 times higher than that of NAAS02335. Laccase activity was only estimated by strain NAAS02335. The lignocellulytic enzymes are induced by substrates such as rice straw, wooden chips of pine, oak, and poplar. The NAAS05299 was able to degrade filter paper completely after 4 weeks of culturing in liquid media containing a piece of filter paper at $28^{\circ}C$ with continuous shaking. NAAS05299 was able to degrade rice straw, pine chips, and oak chips after 4 months in solid culture, however NAAS02335 decomposed only rice straw among tested 4 kinds of biomass.
This study was conducted the vegetation clustering analysis for the 3 mountains of Mt. Bulam, Mt. Daemo, Mt. Bonghwa which were the urban forests of Seoul. Based on the results of the analysis related to the vegetation clustering, it was found that the clustering of Mt. Bulam consisted of pine trees(Pinus densiflora)-Mongolian oak(Quercus mongolica), Hornb eam(Carpinus laxiflora)-Pitch pine(P. rigida), oriental oak(Q. variabilis) - a wild pear tree(Sorbus alnifolia) while the clustering of Mt. Daemo consisted of Pitch pine-Japanese larch(Larix leptolepis), Poplar(Populus tomentig landulosa)- black birch(Betula davurica pall). Meanwhile, the clustering of Mt. Bonghwa consisted of pine trees-a wild pear tree Community and Sawtooth oak(Q. acutissima)-Cherry Blossoms(Prunus serrulata). In relation to the similarity index by region in Mt. Bulam, Mt. Daemo, and Mt. Bonghwa, the similarity index of Mt. Bulam and Mt. Daemo stood at as high as 0.634, suggesting the distribution of similar vegetation, and the dominance index of the Mt. Daemo region was found to be 0.166 which suggests the dominance of many species compared to other regions. In addition, the results of species diversity showed that Mt. Daemo had the highest stability, and the species diversity, maximum species diversity, evenness indices were highest in Mt. Bulam, followed by Mt. Bonghwa and Mt. Daemo. The dominance index was the lowest in Mt. Bulam, followed by Mt. Bonghwa and Mt. Daemo.
