  • In this paper, the analytic studies on the wave control performance of moored pontoon-type floating breakwater are presented. A two-dimensional eigenfunction expansion method is adopted to study the motion responses and the transmission coefficients of pontoon-type floating breakwater in beam waves. The stiffness coefficients of mooring line are idealized as linear elastic spring. Comparison of the analytical results with a numerical results (FEM) shows good agreement over a wide range of frequencies. The performance of mooed pontoon-type floating breakwater is tested with various design parameters such as sectional geometry, mooring line characteristics and wave frequencies. It is found that the properly designed floating breakwater can be an effective wave control structure.

  • In this research, the influence of additional vertical deformation of floating pontoon when dead load of each story is loaded during construction was investigated. The analysis procedure is presented for considering the influence of the additional deformation to calculate the additional moment of super-frame. Following the procedure, an example building with 3 storied steel frame was analyzed. Analysis method that taking no account for deformation of pontoon to the modeling was underestimated by ignoring design load following deformation of vertical load. By operating the load at the same time, design load under the influence of large deflection of model which whole modeling of floating structure was overestimated. So analysis method of floating structure considering the construction sequences demonstrated the suitable method.

  • Hydroelastic deformation of pontoon type floating structure in waves is critical in structural design. Therefore, it is necessary to develop additional technology that make to dissipate the wave energy as the submerged horizontal plate. In this study, we investigate the characteristics of hydrodynamic interaction effect by the submerged plate affecting to the radiation forces on a pontoon type floating structure using numerical analysis. We have developed the numerical method based on the composite grid system that consists of moving and fixed grid to compute the radiation forces due to the heaving motion of pontoon type floating structure and submerged plate. The numerical simulations based on the finite difference method are carried out to solve the fully nonlinear free surface involving the breaking waves and compared with the experimental data to confirm the reliability of the numerical method. Then, we discuss the interaction effects on the hydrodynamic forces that could influence on the hydroelastic response of floating structure.

  • In this study, a hybrid floating structure with cylinder was introduced to reduce the hydrodynamic motions of the pontoon type. The hybrid floating structure is composed of cylinders and semi-opened side sections to penetrate the wave impact energy. In order to exactly investigate the hydrodynamic motions and structural behavior of the hybrid floating structure under the wave loadings, integrated analysis of hydrodynamic and structural behavior were carried out on the hybrid floating structure. Firstly, the hydrodynamic analyses were performed on the hybrid and pontoon models. Then, the wave-induced hydrodynamic pressures resulting from hydrodynamic analysis were directly mapped to the structural analysis model. And, finally, the structural analyses were carried out on the hybrid and pontoon models. As a result of this study, it was learned that the hybrid model of this study was showed to have more favorable hydrodynamic motions than the pontoon model. The surge motion was indicated even smaller motion at all over wave periods from 4.0 to 10.0 sec, and the heave and pitch motions indicated smaller motions beyond its wave period of 6.5 sec. However, the hybrid model was shown more unfavorable structural behavior than the pontoon model. High concentrated stress occurred at the bottom slab of the bow and stern part where the cylinder wall was connected to the bottom slab. Also, the hybrid model behaved with the elastic body motion due to weak stiffness of floating body and caused a large stress variation at the pure slab section between the cylinder walls. Hence, in order to overcome these problems, some alternatives which could be easily obtained from the simple modification of structural details were proposed.

  • This paper presents damage detection and estimation of stiffness parameter on a concrete scale model and a real structure of concrete pontoon using dynamic properties such as mode shapes and natural frequencies. In case of damage detection, dynamic impact test on a concrete scale model is accomplished to extract mode shapes and the practicality is verified by utilizing a damage detection technique. And the stiffness parameter of a real structure of concrete pontoon was estimated via system identification technique using the natural frequencies of the structure. The results indicate that the damaged elements of the scale model are found exactly using damage detection technique and the effective stiffness property of the real structure of concrete pontoon can be estimated by system identification technique.

  • Recently, due to the rapid growth of the leisure industry, demand for small-scale flotation and mooring pontoon platforms has been increasing rapidly. Standard rules for the design and structural safety of such structures have become necessary. This paper provides criteria that can be referenced when designing pontoon platforms, and also introduces structural safety evaluation procedures. In this study, the structural safety and stability of a 15-meter pontoon platform were investigated through structural design and finite element analysis. For platforms of less than 10 meters in length, a simple structural calculation can be used, but for platforms over 10 meters, a detailed structural strength review must be considered to meet safety guidelines defined in existing regulations. The structural strength of the initial design was examined and its structural safety was verified. For future research, it is an evaluative system was developed that can be used to examine the various loading conditions during design.

  • In this study, in order to investigate the wave-induced buoyancy effects, experimental studies were conducted on pontoon-type floating structures. A series of small-scale tests with various wave cases were performed on the pontoon models. A total of four small-scale pontoon models with different lateral shapes and bottom details were fabricated and tested under the five different wave cases. Six hydraulic pressure gauges were attached to the bottom surfaces of the pontoon models and the wave-induced hydraulic pressure was measured during the tests. Finally, hydraulic pressures subjected to the bottoms of the pontoon models were compared with each other. As the results of this study, it was found that whereas the waffled bottom shape hardly influenced the wave-induced hydraulic pressure, the hybrid lateral shape significantly influenced the wave-induced hydraulic pressure subjected on the bottoms of floating structures. The air gap effects of the hybrid shape contribute to decreasing the wave-induced hydraulic pressure due to absorption of wave impact energy. Compared with box type, the hydraulic pressures of the hybrid type were about 83% at the bow, 74% at the middle, and 53% at the stern.

  • A numerical study on the hydrodynamic properties of a floating flexible breakwater consisting of triple vertical porous membrane structures attached to a floating rigid pontoon restrained by moorings is carried out in the context of two-dimensional linear wave-flexible body interaction theory. The tensions in the triple membranes are achieved by hanging a clump weight from its lower ends. The clump weight is also restrained properly by moorings. The dynamic behavior of the breakwater was described through an appropriate Green function, and the fluid multi-domains are incorporated into the boundary integral equation. Numerical results are presented which illustrate the effects of the various wave and structural parameters on the efficiency of the breakwater as a barrier to wave action. It is found that the wave reflection and transmission properties of the structures depends strongly on the membrane length taking major fraction of water column, the magnitude of tensions on membrane achieving by the clump weight, proper mooring types and stiffness, the permeability on the membrane dissipating wave energy.

  • For the analysis of contineous building foundation, the conventional methods assume that subgrade reaction is uniform. But for more accurate analysis, the method considering variable distribution of subgrade reaction and the conventional methods were compared. Addithionally pontoon foundation to reduce the stress of foundation is introduced.
