Effects of Polyurethane Coated Urea Supplement on In vitro Ruminal Fermentation, Ammonia Release Dynamics and Lactating Performance of Holstein Dairy Cows Fed a Steam-flaked Corn-based Diet

  • Three experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of polyurethane coated urea on in vitro ruminal fermentation, ammonia release dynamics and lactating performance of Holstein dairy cows fed a steam-flaked corn-based diet. In Exp. 1, a dual-flow continuous culture was run to investigate the effect of polyurethane coated urea on nutrient digestibility, rumen fermentation parameters and microbial efficiency. Three treatment diets with isonitrogenous contents (13.0% CP) were prepared: i) feedgrade urea (FGU) diet; ii) polyurethane coated urea (PCU) diet; and iii) isolated soy protein (ISP) diet. Each of the diets consisted of 40% steam-flaked corn meal, 58.5% forages and 1.5% different sources of nitrogen. PCU and FGU diets had significantly lower digestibility of NDF and ADF (p<0.01) than the ISP diet. Nitrogen source had no significant effect (p = 0.62) on CP digestibility. The microbial efficiency (expressed as grams of microbial N/kg organic matter truly digested (OMTD)) in vitro of the PCU diet (13.0 g N/kg OMTD) was significantly higher than the FGU diet (11.3 g N/kg OMTD), but comparable with the ISP diet (14.7 g N/kg OMTD). Exp. 2, an in vitro ruminal fermentation experiment, was conducted to determine the ammonia release dynamics during an 8 h ruminal fermentation. Three treatment diets were based on steam-flaked corn diets commonly fed to lactating cows in China, in which FGU, PCU or soybean meal (SBM) was added to provide 10% of total dietary N. In vitro $NH_3-N$ concentrations were lower (p<0.05) for the PCU diet than the FGU diet, but similar to that for the SBM diet at all time points. In Exp. 3, a lactation trial was performed using 24 lactating Holstein cows to compare the lactating performance and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) concentrations when cows were fed PCU, FGU and SBM diets. Cows consuming the PCU diet had approximately 12.8% more (p = 0.02) dietary dry matter intake than those consuming the FGU diet. Cows fed the PCU diet had higher milk protein content (3.16% vs. 2.94%) and lower milk urea nitrogen (MUN) concentration (13.0 mg/dl vs. 14.4 mg/dl) than those fed the FGU diet. Blood urea nitrogen (BUN) concentration was significantly lower for cows fed the PCU (16.7 mg/dl) and SBM (16.4 mg/dl) diets than the FGU (18.7 mg/dl) diet. Cows fed the PCU diet had less surplus ruminal N than those fed the FGU diet and produced a comparable lactation performance to the SBM diet, suggesting that polyurethane coated urea can partially substitute soybean meal in the dairy cow diet without impairing lactation performance.

Effect of Polyisocyanate Hardener on Waterborne Polyurethane Adhesive Containing Different Amounts of Ionic Groups

  • Waterborne polyurethane (WBPU) adhesive with varying amounts of dimethylol propionic acid (DMPA) was synthesized by prepolymer process and blended with polyisocyanate hardener. The mean particle size of the WBPU dispersion decreased with increasing DMPA content. $^1H$ NMR spectroscopy confirmed the formation of allophanate bonds and biuret bonds due to the reaction of hardener NCO with urethane/urea groups. The optimum NCO content with the greatest adhesive strength was dependent on the total content of urethane/urea groups in the WBPU molecules. The optimum NCO content increased with increasing number of urethane groups (DMPA content). The adhesion strength of WBPU adhesives was maximized at a molar ratio of hardener NCO to urethane/urea of about 0.28.

Flexural Modulus of Larch Boards Laminated by Adhesives with Reinforcing Material

  • Economical use of larix (larch) boards (grade 3) in industries is lower than that of imported hardwood; thus, studies have been conducted toward performance improvement of larix boards. Herein, flexural modulus of larix board samples laminated with wood adhesives polyurethane resins, poly (vinyl acetate) resins, phenol-resorcinol-formaldehyde resins, melamine-formaldehyde resins, and urea-formaldehyde resins was compared with that of the samples bonded with adhesives reinforced with mesh-type basalt fibers. Moreover, the flexural moduli of the laminated samples bonded by mesh-type basalt fibers were compared with those of reinforced samples. The results showed that boards laminated with polyurethane and urea-formaldehyde resin adhesives had higher flexural modulus than those without the lamination. In particular, the increase in the flexural modulus was relatively significant for the 2- and 3-ply board structures laminated with polyurethane adhesives compared to those with reinforcement. The 3-ply board structure without reinforcement had the highest flexural modulus when the urea-formaldehyde resin adhesive was used.

Preparation and Properties of Waterborne Polyurethane-Urea/Poly(vinyl alcohol) Blends for High Water Vapor Permeable Coating Materials

  • High water vapor permeable coating materials were prepared by blending aqueous poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) solution with waterborne polyurethane-urea (WBPU) dispersions synthesized by prepolymer mixing process. Stable WBPU/PVA dispersions were achieved at PVA content below 30 wt%. As the water soluble polymer PVA content increased, the number and density of total micro-pores (tunnel-like/isolated micro-pores) formed after the dissolution of PVA in water increased, and the water vapor permeability of coated Nylon fabric also increased significantly. Using WBPU/water soluble polymer PVA blends as a coating material and then dissolving PVA in water was confirmed to be an effective method to obtain prominent breathable fabrics.

새로운 인계 난연제가 연질폴리우레탄 폼의 난연성에 미치는 영향 (Flame Retardancy of Novel Phosphorus Flame Retardant for Polyurethane Foam)

  • Diphosphoric acid와 1,4-butanediol을 이용하여 tetramethylene bis(orthophosphate)를 합성한 후 이를 urea와 반응시켜 새로운 인계난연제인 tetramethylene bis(orthophosphoryl urea) (TBPU)를 합성하였다. FT-IR을 이용하여 합성된 TBPU의 구조를 확인하였으며, TBPU를 폴리우레탄 폼에 첨가하여 기계적 물성과 열적성질, 난연성능 변화를 측정하였다. TBPU의 함량증가에 따른 폴리우레탄 폼의 기계적 물성 저하는 없음을 확인하였고, 난연제의 함량이 증가함에 따라 난연성능은 증가하였으며, 감압후의 난연성능 측정에서도 난연성능이 유지됨을 확인하였다. TGA를 통한 열적거동실험에서 TBPU가 첨가된 폴리우레탄 폼은 TBPU가 첨가되지 않은 폴리우레탄 폼에 비해 내열성이 향상됨을 확인 할 수 있었다.

  • ISFET 요소센서는 pH-ISFET의 수소이온 감지막인 $Si_{3}N_{4}$ 막 위에 요소의 분해 효소인 urease를 항혈전성 및 생체적합성이 우수한 고분자물질인 폴리우레탄을 이용하여 고정화하였다. 제작된 센서는 $3{\sim}5$분의 빠른 응답 특성과 우수한 반복성을 보였으며, 약 $1{\sim}50$ mg/dl의 요소농도를 결정할 수 있었다. 또한 임상적용을 위한 연구로서 혈장속의 요소농도를 측정하여 현재 실용되고 있는 Urease-Indophenol 법의 결과와 비교하였다.

  • 본 논문은 급성 간 부전 환자나 간이식 대기상태에 있는 환자에 이용하기 위한 체외 간 보조장치를 개발하기 위한 기초 실험에 관한 것이다. 밀도 33kg/m, 평균 직경 500um, 60-70%의 window를 가진 폴리우레탄 폼을 15% NCO-프리폴리머로 제조하였다. 폴리우레탄 폼에 접종된 간세포는 3일 후에 거의 모두 100-150um 크기의 구상체를 형성하였다. BSA 코팅을 한 폴리우레탄 폼은 BSA로 코팅하지 않은 폴리우레탄 폼보다 간세포 구상체 형성 시간이 더 짧았다. 폴리우레탄 폼에 형성된 간세포 구상체의 간 기능을 증명하기 위하여 암모니아 제거율과 요소 및 알부민 분비율을 측정하였다. 폴리우레탄 폼은 간세포 구상체 배양에 적합하며, 폴리우레탄 폼 내에서의 간세포 구상체 배양은 체외 간 보조장치로의 개발 가능성이 높다.

Effect of NCO/OH Ratio and Chain Extender Content on Properties of Polycarbonate Diol-based Waterborne Polyurethane

  • Polycarbonate diol-based waterborne polyurethane (WPU) was prepared by prepolymer mixing process. The prepolymer mixture contained the polycarbonate diol, isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), dimethylol propionic acid, triethylamine, and ethylenediamine (EDA). The NCO/OH ratio in the prepolymer was adjusted by controlling the molar ratio of IPDI, and its effects on the properties of WPU were studied. The structure of WPU was characterized by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The average particle size increased and viscosity decreased with increasing NCO/OH ratio and EDA content in WPU. The reduced phase separation between soft and hard segments increased glass transition temperature. The reduction in the thermal decomposition temperature could be attributed to the low bond energy of urethane and urea groups, which constituted the hard segment. Additionally, the polyurethane chain mobility was restricted, elongation decreased, and tensile strength increased. The hydrogen bond between the hard segments formed a dense structure that hindered water absorption.

촉매를 이용한 폐고분자 물질의 자원화 II. 연질 폴리우레탄 폼의 글리콜분해반응 메카니즘 (Catalytic Recycling of Waste Polymer II. A Study of the Mechanism on the Catalytic Glycolysis of Flexible Polyurethane Foam)

  • 폴리우레탄 폼은 반복된 우레탄과 우레아 그룹을 가지고 있는 고분자 물질이다. 연질 폴리우레탄 폼을 이루고 있는 이 두 그룹들은 반응온도 $200^{\circ}C$, 글리콜, 초산 칼륨 촉매 존재 하에서 가열시키면 에스테르교환반응에 의해 분해되어 액상의 생성물을 형성한다. GPC, IR 분석을 이용한 생성물의 분자량과 성분 함량분포 측정을 통하여 촉매글리콜분해 반응기구를 조사하였다. 폴리우레탄 폼의 에스테르교환 반응에서는 우레탄 그룹이 우레아 그룹의 분해 반응속도보다 빨랐다. 이온화 경향이 큰 potassium acetate 촉매를 사용함으로써 alkoxide의 친핵성이 증진되어 에스테르교환 반응속도를 촉진시킴을 알 수 있다. 또한, potassium acetate와 strontium acetate 촉매를 사용한 촉매글리콜분해반응은 서로 같은 반응경로로 반응이 진행되지만 반응속도의 차이로 생성물을 구성하는 성분의 함량이 다름을 알 수 있었다.

물 함량과 NCO Index 변화가 자동차용 폴리우레탄 시트 폼 패드의 정적 안락감에 미치는 영향 고찰 (Effect of Change in Water Content and NCO Index on the Static Comfort of Polyurethane Seat Foam Pad for Automobiles)

  • 본 연구에서는 다양한 NCO index에서 물 함량 변화가 자동차용 폴리우레탄 시트 폼 패드의 정적 안락감에 미치는 영향을 알아보았다. 정적 안락감에 영향을 미치는 요인을 파악하기 위해 UTM을 사용한 정하중 특성 시험을 통하여 히스테리시스 곡선을 나타냈으며, 이를 통해 25% 변형 시 경도와 65% 변형 시 경도, hysteresis loop area, hysteresis loss (%), 그리고 Sag factor를 구하였다. 동일한 NCO index에서 물 함량이 증가함에 따라 우레아 결합의 증가로 경도가 증가하고, 가교밀도가 증가하는 경향을 swelling ratio 측정으로 확인하였으며, 이에 따라 복원력은 감소하는 경향을 확인하였다. 또한 표면 경도의 증가로 인해 Sag factor가 감소하는 경향을 확인하였다. 동일한 물 함량에서 NCO index가 증가함에 따라 우레탄과 우레아 결합이 이소시아네이트와 추가 반응하여 가교도와 경도가 증가하고 이에 따라 복원력이 감소함을 확인하였다.
