Atomic Force Microscopy and Specular Reflectance Infrared Spectroscopic Studies of the Surface Structure of Polypropylene Treated with Argon and Oxygen Plasmas

  • Isotactic polypropylene (PP) surfaces were modified with argon and oxygen plasmas using a radio­frequency (RF) glow discharge at 240 mTorr and 40 W. The changes in topography and surface structure were investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) in conjunction with specular reflectance of infrared (IR) microspectroscopy. Under our operating conditions, the AFM image analysis revealed that longer plasma treatment resulted in significant ablation on the PP surface, regardless of the kind of plasma employed, but the topography was dependent on the nature of the gases. Specular reflectance IR spectroscopic analysis indicated that the constant removal of surface material was an important ablative aspect when using either plasma, but the nature of the ablative behavior and the resultant aging effects were clearly dependent on the choice of plasma. The use of argon plasma resulted in a negligible aging effect; in contrast, the use of oxygen plasma caused a noticeable aging effect, which was due to reactions of trapped or isolated radicals with oxygen in air, and was partly responsible for the increased surface area caused by ablation. The use of oxygen plasma is believed to be an advantageous approach to modifying polymeric materials with functionalized surfaces, e.g., for surface grafting of unsaturated monomers and incorporating oxygen-containing groups onto PP.

유리섬유/폴리프로필렌 복합재료의 충격파괴기구에 대한 온도효과 (Temperature Effects on Impact Fracture Mechanisms of Glass Fiber/Polypropylene Campsites)

  • Many of researches regarding mechanical properties of composite materials are associated with humid environment and temperature. Especially the temperature is a very important factor influencing the design of thermoplastic composites. However, the effect of temperature on impact behavior of reinforced composites have not yet been fully explored. An approach which predicts critical fracture toughness GIC was performed by the impact test in this work The main goal of this work is to study effects of temperature in the impact test with glass fiber/polypropylene(GF/pp) composites. The critical fracture energy and failure mechanisms of GF/PP composites are investigated in the temperature range of $60^{\circ}C\;to\;-50^{\circ}C$ by impact test. The critical fracture energy shows a maximum at ambient temperature and it tends to decrease as temperature goes up or goes down. Major failure mechanisms can be classified such as fiber matrix debonding, fiber pull-out and/or delamination and matrix deformation.

AA5182판재와 AA5182/PP/AA5182 샌드위치 판재의 성형성 평가 (Formability for AA5182 sheet and AA5182/PP/AA5182 sandwich sheet)

  • 자동차의 경량화를 위해서 AA5182/Polypropylene/AA5182 형태의 알루미늄 합금과 폴리프로필렌으로 구성된 샌드위치 판재가 개발되었다. 샌드위치 판재의 성형성을 평가하기 위해서 0.2mm 두께의 AA5182 판재와 1.2mm 두께의 샌드위치 판재의 성형한계도를 수정된 Marciniak-Kuczynski(M-K) 이론에 의해서 구하였다. 판재의 이방성을 표현하기 위해서 Hill의 1948년 항복곡선 표현 식을 사용하였다. 그 결과 샌드위치 판재의 성형한계도가 AA5182판재보다 더 우수하게 평가되었으며 이것은 실험값과 잘 일치하였다.

Mechanical and Thermal Properties of Polypropylene/Wax/MAPP Composites Reinforced with High Loading of Wood Flour

  • Polypropylene (PP) composites with wood flour/wax/coupling agent were manufactured by melt compounding and injection molding. The influence of wood flour(WF), wax, and coupling agent on the mechanical and thermal properties of the composites was investigated. The addition of wood flour to neat PP has the higher tensile modulus and strength compared with neat PP. The presence of wax also improved the tensile modulus. At the same loading of PP and WF, the addition of coupling agent highly decreased the tensile modulus, and increased the tensile strength. From thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), the addition of wax improved the thermal stability of the composites in the later stages of degradation. The presence of MAPP and wood flour in turn decreased thermal stabilities of composites. From differential scanning calorimetry analysis (DSC), neither the loading of wax. nor the presence of MAPP has shown significant effect on the thermal transition of composites.

Dyeing Properties of Blanket Fabric of Dyeable Polypropylene

  • Dyeing and fastness properties of a dyeable PP fiber were examined with four different types of disperse dyes. It was found that the dyed PP fiber could be cleared by soaping without using sodium hydrosulphite, and that the heat setting above $140^{\circ}C$ resulted in the melting of the PP fiber. The rates of dyeing and the extents of exhaustion of three primary E type dyes were different with each other, the apparent color strength did not increase with increasing dye concentration, and color fastness to washing was not satisfactory. In the cases of both high wash fastness and high light fastness dyes, the rates of dyeing were slow and the extents of exhaustion were very low. On the other hand, the dyeing rates of three primary S type dyes were similar and the build-up properties were good with good color fastnesses. It might be concluded that the best disperse dyes for the dyeable PP fiber were S type dyes.

알코올 농축을 위한 투과증발막의 특성 및 조업변수 연구 (Characterization of Pervaporation Membranes and Its Operation Parameters for Alcohol Concentration)

  • 상업용 PDMS(polydimethylsiloxiane) 복합막과 플라즈마 처리된 PP(polypropylene)막을 사용하여 투과증발에 의한 알코올 농축을 수행하였고, 공정 조업 변수에 따른 영향을 조사하였다. PDMS막에 대한 부탄올의 친화력과 물의 친화력보다 크기 때문에 공급액의 부탄올 농도가 증가함에 따라 투과량의 선택도가 모두 증가하였다. 조업 온도가 증가함에 따라 고분자 사슬내의 자유 부피)free volume)가 증가하고 막에 대한 알코올과 물의 용해도 및 확산계수도 증가하여 투과량은 증가하였지만, 선택도는 감소하였다. PDMS 막과 용해도 계수(solubility parameter)값의 차가 적은 알코올일수록 높은 투과량과 선택도를 나타내었다. PP막을 메탄올로 플라즈마 처리한 경우 PDMS 복합막과 유사한 분리효율을 나타내면서도 투과량은 6배나 증가하였다. 플라즈마 처리 시간에 따라 투과량과 선택도는 모두 향상되었으나 일정 시간 이후에는 기공의 막힘 현상으로 투과량은 감소하였다.

Nylon 6/Polypropylene 블렌드의 충격특성 및 모폴로지 (Impact Characteristics and Morphology of Nylon 6/Polypropylene Blends)

  • Melt blends of maleic anhydride grafted polypropylerle(PP-g-MA) and Nylon 6 were prepared to study the influence of chemical reaction between the two polymer components. By adding the MA grafted polystyrene pold (ethylene/butadiene) and polystyrene[SEBS-g-MA] as the compatible modifiers to reinforce the impact resistance, the Izod impact strength, high rate impact strength and morphology were studied. The notched Izod impact strength increased with the content of PP-g-MA and SEBS- g-MA. The energy of high rate impact strength increased as the thickness of specimen increased, while, it increased as the specimen displacement decreased. In the morphology observed by SEM, finally, we confirmed the improvement of the compatibilization and interfacial adhesion with the content of SEBS-g-MA. The continuous phase of PP-g-MA was the main cause of the modified properties.

섬유의 종류 및 온도가열곡선 변화에 따른 콘크리트의 내화특성 (Fire Resistance of the Concrete Corresponding to the Various Fiber Contents and Heating Curves)

  • This study investigated fundamental characters of the concrete according to various fiber types and contents and their properties of spatting resistance and residual compressive strength after fire test corresponding to ISO and RABT heating corves. The results were summarized as following. The Flowability was gradually declined as the increase of fiber contents, and it was the most favorable with nylon(NY) fibers. The decrease of air contents due to increasing fiber contents was in order by polypropylene(PP), polyvinyl alcohol(PVA) and NY fibers. The compressive strengths were over 40 MPa at 7 days and 50 MPa at 28 days. It was in order by PVA, PP and NY fibers. For the spatting properties, all specimens were prevented at ISO heating curve. In the other hand, the partial spatting at the surface occurred on the plain without fibers, but it was prevented over 0.10 % of PVA and 0.05 % of PP and NY fibers at the RABT heating curve.

혼화재 종류 및 폴리프로필렌 섬유의 혼입률 변화에 따른 고성능 콘크리트의 폭열 특성 (Spalling Properties of High-Performance Concrete with the Kinds of Admixture and Polypropylene Fiber Contents)

  • Recently. there has been steadily applied in high-performance concrete using powder type admixture in construction field. It has been reported that high-performance concrete is likely to cause the spalling by fire more seriously due to the dense microstructure. In this paper, spalling properties of high-performance concrete with the kinds of admixture and polypropylene(PP) fiber contents are presented. According to the experimental results concrete contained no PP fiber take place in the form of the surface spalling, regardless of admixture. Concrete contained more than 0.05% of PP fiber and admixture do not take place the spalling, however the concrete using silica fume do spalling. Concrete using blast furnace slag have good performance in spalling resistance. It is found that residual compressive strength has 60~70% of its original strength when spalling do not occur. Although specimens after exposed at high temperature are cured at water for 28days, they do not recover their original strength.

폴리프로필렌에 UV 흡수제를 갖는 말레이미드의 용융그래프팅 (Thermal Melt Grafting of Maleimides Having UV-absorber onto Polypropylene)

  • 새로운 단량체형의 자외선흡수제를 triethylamine에서 2,4-dihydroxybenzophenone과 N-4-chlorocarbonyl-phenylmaleimide의 반응을 통하여 합성하였다. 이 자외선흡수제를 폴리프로필렌에 용융반응에 의해 그래프팅하였다. Maleimide의 그래프팅 수율은 IR 분광 데이터를 이용하여 결정하였다. 용융반응의 최적조건을 구하기 위하여 반응온도 및 시간, 단량체의 농도의 변화에 대하여 그래프팅 수율을 구하였다. Weatherometer에서 IR 스펙트럼의 카보닐 지수를 이용하여 그래프트된 폴리프로필렌의 광산화 정도를 조사하였으며, 우수한 광산화 억제작용을 보였다.
