This paper presents three-dimensional finite element method analyses of the distribution of equivalents stress of Von Mises. Induced around a cavity located in the bone cement polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA). The presences and effect of its position in the cement was demonstrated, thus on the stress level and distribution. The porosity interaction depending on their positions, and their orientations on the interdistances their mechanical behaviour of bone cement effects were analysed. The obtained results show that micro-porosity located in the proximal and distal zone of the prosthesis is subject to higher stress field. We show that the breaking strain of the cement is largely taken when the cement, containing the porosities very close adjacent to each other.

In this paper, three-dimensional finite element analysis have been performed to investigate the biomechanics of vertebroplasty in patient. In order to apply various properties of the spine, the functional relation between the well-known apparent density and HU(Hounsfield unit) from CT image were employed and thus real material property can be assigned to each element of FE model. The FE analysis showed similar results with the experiments. With this approach accurate analysis of the spine and the clinical application can be expected.

Optical broadband second harmonic genration (SHG) in thin film waveguide structure was investigated. The copolymer poly(MMA-co-DR1MA) which was consiste dof PMMA (polymethylmethacrylate) and DR 1 (disperse red 1) was spin coated on the pyrex substrate. The green and near UV SHG were observe dfrom the fundamental beam even though the poled polymer has the absorption in second harmonic wavelength range. It was able to genrate SHG by cerenkov type phase matching. Th epoled polymer film thickness was decided by theoretical analysis. The green (532nm) and near UV SHG (370nm) were observed from the Q-switched Nd-YAG laser (1064nm) and Ti-sapphire laser (740nm). It was in good agreement with the experimental results.
Vertebroplasty has drawn much attention as a medical treatment for the compression fracture of spine, which strengthens the vertebral body and corrects deformity, and relieves pain in patients by injecting bone cement. However vertebroplasty can cause fracture on adjacent vertebra due to relative stiffness change. This study involves the biomechanical evaluation of the vertebroplasty especially on adjacent vertebral body. The finite element method has been employed to analyze the patient who was treated vertebroplasty under static and dynamic loading. For this study, a three-dimentioal model of the three-level ligamentous lumbar segment ($L1{\sim}L3$)is created from medical image data (CT)and compared with the experimental results in vitro.
In this paper the attempts made by the authors to explore the feasibility of utilising concentrated solar beam radiation for joining engineering thermoplastics such as Acrylonitrilc/Butadiene/Styrene (ABS), Polycarbonate(PC) and Polymethylmethacrylate(PMMA) are presented. In addition, to study the joining of the materials, necessary experimentation with applying primer was performed. Tensile tests were conducted to determine the bond strength achieved at the specimen joint interface. Microscopic examinations of the fractured joints were performed in order to analyse the overall bond quality. Finally, the results in terms of bond strength achieved at the joint interface and energy consumed in the process were compared with those obtained with similar thermoplastic joining technique utilising microwave energy. In conclusion some advantages and limitations were outlined and necessary improvements of the jointing technique were recommended.
The purpose of this study was to investigate bond strength of denture base resin repaired according to contamination. One commercial denture base resin and two different kinds of relines resin were tested; Lusiton 199(denture base resin), Vertex(reline resin) and TokusoRebase(repair resin). The specimens were processed according to the manufacturer's instructions to cured denture base resin(polymethylmethacrylate; PMMA) and reline resin. Bond strengths were examined by use of a three-point transverse flexural strength test. Data were analyzed with two-factor analysis of variance and Duncan's post-hoc test at $\alpha$=0.05. Generally, the bondstrength of heat-cured resin(Lusiton 199) was higher than the other resins. The contaminations produced an decrease in bond strength. Therefore the contamination, such as saliva or water must be avoided during the laboratory repair procedures.

The Hot Embossing Lithography(HEL) as a method for the fabrication of nanostructure with polymer is becoming increasingly important because of its simple process, low cost, high replication fidelity and relatively high throughput. In this study, we investigated the characteristics of hot embossing lithography as a nanoreplication technique. To grasp characteristics of nano patterning rheology by process parameters(embossing temperature, pressure and time), we have carried out various experiments by using the DVD(400nm pattern width) and Blu-ray nickel stamps(150nm pattern width). During the hot embossing process, we have observed the characteristics of the size effect. The quality of products made by hot embossing is affected by its cooling shrinkage. The demolding process at the glass transition temperature results in low quality because of the shrinkage of the polymer. Therefore, the quantification of the temperature condition is essential for the replication of high quality.

We demonstrated the capillary force lithography (CFL) method for controlling the azimuthal anchoring energy of a liquid crystal (LC) alignment layer. When a thermoplastic polymer film is heated to over the glass transition temperature, the melted polymer is filled into the mold structure by the capillary action and the aspect ratio of the pattern is determined by the dewetting time of the CFL process. Here, the proposed method showed that the azimuthal anchoring energy of the LC alignment layer could be simply controlled by the surface relief patterns which were determined by the dewetting times during the CFL patterning.
The reaction between $[CdBr_2{\cdot}4H_2O]$ and anhydrous $[ZnCl_2]$ with N,N'-bidentate N-(pyridin-2-ylmethylene)-cyclopentanamine (impy) in ethanol yields dimeric $[(impy)Cd({\mu}-Br)Br]_2$ and monomeric $[(impy)ZnCl_2]$ complexes, respectively. The X-ray crystal structure of Cd(II) and Zn(II) complexes revealed that the cadmium atom in $[(impy)Cd({\mu}-Br)Br]_2$ and zinc in $[(impy)ZnCl_2]$ formed a distorted trigonal-bipyramidal and tetrahedral geometry, respectively. Both complexes showed moderate catalytic activity for the polymerisation of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in the presence of modified methylaluminoxane (MMAO), with polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) syndiotacticity of about 0.70.
We successfully synthesized the addition-type polynorbonenes (PNB) exhibiting photochromic properties and excellent thermal stability. Three norbornene-based monomers with different azobenzene moiety (R=NO2, H,OCH3) were synthesized by transesterification method. The corresponding PNB copolymers were synthesized by transition metal-catalyzed addition polymerization method, and characterized by GPC, UV-Vis spectroscopy, NMR, and thermal analysis. For comparison of the photochromic properties depending on the rigidity of polymer backbone, we prepared the polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) copolymer with the corresponding azobenzene moiety. We investigated the photoisomerization behavior by means of optical muitichannel analyzer with Xe lamp as well as real-time UV-Vis spectroscopy with high-pressure mercury lamp. Among three PNB copolymers, a polymer with azobenzene (R=H) was the most adaptable for observation of photoisomerization behavior. It was found that the rate of photoisomerization and relaxation depended on the structure of azobenzene chromophore, rather than that of polymer backbone.
