  • A new polymer replication technology using ultrasonic vibration is proposed and demonstrated. A commercial ultrasonic welder has been used in this experiment. Two different types of nickel molds have been fabricated: pillar type and pore type microstructures. Polymethyl methacrlylate (PMMA) has been used as the replication material and the optimal molding time was 2 sec and 2.5 sec for pillar-type and pore-type micromolds, respectively. Compared with the conventional polymer micromolding techniques, the proposed ultrasonic micromolding technique has the shortest processing time. In addition, only contact area between micromold and polymer substrate is melted so that the thermal shrinkage can be minimized. The fabricated PMMA microstructures have been very accurately replicated without vacuum. The proposed ultrasonic molding technique is a good alternative for high volume production.

  • Polymethylmethacrylate(PMMA) is currently commonly used material for the reconstruction of bone defects and fixation of joint prosthetics following congenital and acquired causes. Although PMMA has widespread use, it does not possess the ideal mechanical characteristics with osteoconductivity and osteoinductivity required. In order to overcome these problem, addition of bovine bone drived defatting demineralized bone(BDB) powders to a PMMA bone cement was done for improvement of physical property and bone forming characteristics of composite. In order to investigate the influence of BDB reinforcement on the PMMA, we measured physical property of compressive, tensile, flexural strength, and scanning electron microscopic examinations. The results were obtained as follows: 1. The PMMA forms a solid cellular matrix with open cells about $100{\mu}m$ in variable size and incorporating BDB. BDB aggregates inside the cells form a porous network that is accessible from the outer surface. 2. The physical properties were compressive strength of mean $22.74{\pm}1.69MPa$, tensile strength of mean $22.74{\pm}1.69MPa$, flexural strength of mean $77.53{\pm}6.93MPa$. Scanning electron microscopic examinations were revealed that there was DBD particles form a highly porous agglomerates. BDB can be added PMMA in the form of dried powders, the composites are applicable as bone substitutes. BDB and PMMA mixture is shown to produce a class of composites that due to their microstructure and improved mechanical properties may be suitable for application as bone subsitutes. The mechanical and material properties of the BDB-PMMA bone substitute composites are competitive with those properties of a porous ceramic matrix of other hydroxyapatite and with those of natural bones.

  • Dual-energy digital radiography (DEDR) has been used for detecting lesions within the body using energy subtraction methods. The purpose of this study was to acquire optimal bone and tissue image by changing physical factors such as Tube voltage (kVp) and add filters, and then we compared with the predicted values using SRS-78 program and experimental results. For that purpose, we acquired images according to changes in physical parameters of various materials since we had to acquire the optimal bone and tissue image using energy subtraction. Used phantom consists of aluminum and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and a comparison of image optimization was measured by contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR). In results, first of all, we confirmed that a subtraction image from 50 kVp image and 120 kVp image is optimal bone and tissue image. Also when we added a 10 mm Aluminum add filter, we expected it is a result of the optimal bone and tissue image. Besides, we confirmed these results are consistent with the predicted optimized condition by SRS-78 program.. In conclusion, we indicated that we can acquire optimal bone and tissue image by controling physical factors such as kVp, add filters through this study. Also we expected that DEDR will contribute to the field of medical imaging technology.

  • Purpose: The purpose is to test and evaluate the physical properties of commonly used temporary restoration materials and newly emerged materials. Materials and Methods: Four groups of polymer materials were evaluated: Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) 2 groups, Polyetheretherketone (PEEK), Polycarbonate. Four physical properties were tested: surface hardness, bending strength, abrasion resistance during wear, wear behavior. The 3-axis bending strength and Vickers hardness test were measured using a universal testing machines respectively. The microstructure was observed with a scanning electron microscope and weight comparison was evaluated after 100,000 chewing tests using a chewing simulator. Kruskal wallis test was performed to evaluate statistical significance. Results: The four groups showed the highest flexural strength and Vickers hardness of PEEK, followed by PC, PMMA-H, PMMA-T. Microstructure observation also showed the least surface roughness in the PEEK group, followed by PC, PMMA-H, PMMA-T. Conclusion: PC is considered to have sufficient mechanical properties that can be applied to the manufacture of temporary teeth. However, further studies, such as biocompatibility, are considered to be necessary for practical clinical applications.

  • PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to investigate the bonding properties of denture bases to silicone-based soft denture liners immersed in isobutyl methacrylate (iBMA) and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) for various lengths of time. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) test specimens were fabricated (75 mm in length, 12 mm in diameter at the thickest section, and 7 mm at the thinnest section) and then randomly assigned to five groups (n=15); untreated (Group 1), resilient liner immersed in iBMA for 1 minute (Group 2), resilient liner immersed in iBMA for 3 minutes (Group 3), resilient liner immersed in HEMA for 1 minute (Group 4), and resilient liner immersed in HEMA for 3 minutes (Group 5). The resilient liner specimens were processed between 2 PMMA blocks. Bonding strength of the liners to PMMA was compared by tensile test with a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 5 mm/min. Data were evaluated by 1-way ANOVA and post hoc Tukey-Kramer multiple comparisons tests (${\alpha}$=0.05). RESULTS. The highest mean value of force was observed in Group 3 specimens. The differences between groups were statistically significant (P<.05), except between Group 1 and Group 4 (P=.063). CONCLUSION. Immersion of silicone-based soft denture liners in iBMA for 3 minutes doubled the tensile bond strength between the silicone soft liner and PMMA denture base materials compared to the control group.

  • PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to appraise the some mechanical properties of polymethyl methacrylate based denture base resin polymerized by copolymerization mechanism, and to investigate the cytotoxic effect of these copolymer resins. MATERIALS AND METHODS. 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and isobutyl methacrylate (IBMA) were added to monomers of conventional heat polymerized and injection-molded poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) resin contents of 2%, 3%, and 5% by volume and polymerization was carried out. Three-point bending test was performed to detect flexural strength and the elasticity modulus of the resins. To determine the statistical differences between the study groups, the Kruskall-Wallis test was performed. Then pairwise comparisons were performed between significant groups by Mann-Whitney U test. Agar-overlay test was performed to determine cytotoxic effect of copolymer resins. Chemical analysis was determined by FTIR spectrum. RESULTS. Synthesis of the copolymer was approved by FTIR spectroscopy. Within the conventional heat-polymerized group maximum transverse strength had been seen in the HEMA 2% concentration; however, when the concentration ratio increased, the strength decreased. In the injection-molded group, maximum transverse strength had been seen in the IBMA 2% concentration; also as the concentration ratio increased, the strength decreased. Only IBMA showed no cytotoxic effect at low concentrations when both two polymerization methods applied while HEMA showed cytotoxic effect in the injection-molded resins. CONCLUSION. Within the limitations of this study, it may be concluded that IBMA and HEMA may be used in low concentration and at high temperature to obtain non-cytotoxic and durable copolymer structure.

  • To overcome short channel effects, wrap-around field effect transistors have drawn a great deal of attention for their superior electrostatic coupling between the channel and the surrounding gate electrode. In this paper, we introduce a bottom-up technique to fabricate a wrap-around field effect transistor using silicon nanowires as the conduction channel. Device fabrication was consisted mainly of electron-beam lithography, dielectrophoresis to accurately align the nanowires, and the formation of gate electrode using electrochemical deposition. The electrolyte for electrochemical deposition was made up of non-toxic organic-based solution and liquid nitrogen was used as a method of maintaining the shape of polymethyl methacrylate(PMMA) during the process of electrochemical deposition. Patterned PMMA can be used as a nano-template to produce wrap-around gate nano-structures.

  • Nowadays, the development of dental scanner and CAD/CAM technology can facilitate the fabrication of hybrid prosthesis. Double scanning technique, scanning a trial prosthesis and master model, made it possible to realize virtual design and simplify the laboratory work. Instead of using the metal or zirconia framework with composite, ceramic or denture tooth, the new high performance polymer Polyetherketoneketone (Pekkton, Cendres+$M{\acute{e}}taux$, Biel, Switzerland) as a framework with Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) veneering teeth (Visio-lign, Bredent, Senden, Germany) was used in this case. This case report showed an acceptable treatment outcome and satisfaction of patient using Pekkton and Visio-lign. However, long term clinical evaluation is needed.
