  • Medical metal stents inserted to patients with a cardiovascular disease associated with coronary artery system have relatively increased the survival rate. The development of new stents is, however, urgently required due to restenosis and late thrombosis generated in metal stents. To solve these problems, the biodegradable polymers such as poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA), poly(L-lactide)(PLLA), and poly ($\varepsilon$-caprolactone)(PCL) were mixed with alpha lipoic acid (ALA), which is well known to inhibit the proliferation of neointimal hyperplasia. Subsequently, the ALA-loaded polymers were coated on stainless steel by electrospray. The drug-eluting behaviors from the coated polymers were investigated according to kinds and concentrations of polymers, spray rates, and kinds of solvents. The drug-eluting rate from PCL with the lowest glass transition temperature was the fastest among three polymers and followed by PLGA and PLLA. The surface roughness increased as the spray rate was increased and also the drug-eluting rate was affected by kinds of solvents with different boiling point. It is expected that drug-eluting stent (DES) coated with ALA-loaded polymers can be applied practically for clinical applications by controlling the behavior of drug release.

  • We report the design of electroluminescent conjugated polymers for high efficiency, turn-on voltage, color Tuning, and easy processing. Three approaches for the design are reported, being: (1) single chain consideration, (2) supramolecular structure consideration, and (3) conformation manipulation. Two polymer systems are to be reported, being fluorene-based and carbazole-based conjugated polymers.

  • The characterization method for associating polymer solutions was briefly reviewed. The method has not yet established in comparison with the characterization method for molecularly dispersed polymers in solution. However, two examples of associating polymer systems, living polybutadiene anions and amphiphilic statistical copolymers, were successfully characterized on the basis of suitable model and theory.

  • We have studied a series of I2-doped poly [2-buthoxy-5-methoxy-1, 4-phenylenevinylene] (PBMPV) conducting polymers by means of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements. In this work, the EPR linewidth and spin density were obtained from the EPR intensity and studied as a function of the degree of doping.

  • New PPV based conjugated polymers, containing terphenyl units, were prepared as the electroluminescent (EL) layer in light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The prepared polymers, poly[2,5-bis(4-(2-etylhexyloxy)phenyl)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] (BEHP-PPV), poly[2-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-5-(4-(4-(2-etylhexyloxy)phenyl)phenyl)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] (EEPP-PPV) and poly[2-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-5-(9,9-bis(2-etylhexyl)fluorenyl)-1,4 phenylenevinylene] (EHF-PPV), were soluble in common organic solvents and used as the EL layer in double layer light-emitting diodes (LEDs) (ITO/PEDOT/polymer/Al). The polymers were prepared by the Gilch reaction. The number-average molecular weight $(M_n)$, weight-average molecular weight $(M_w)$, and the polydispersities (PDI) of these polymers were in the range of 9000-58000, 27000-231000, 2.9-3.9, respectively. These polymers have quite good thermal stability with decomposition starting above 320-350. The polymers show photoluminescence (PL) with maximum peaks at around 526-562 nm (exciting wavelength, 410 nm) and blue EL with maximum peaks at around $\lambda_{max}$ = 526-552 nm. The current-voltageluminance (I-V-L) characteristics of polymers show turn-on voltages of 5 V. Even though both of EEPP-PPV and BEHP-PPV have the same terphenyl group in the repeating unit, EEPP-PPV with directly substituted alkoxy group in the back bone has longer effective conjugation length than BEHP-PPV, and exhibits red shift in the PL spectra. Both of EEPP-PPV and EHF-PPV have ter-phenyl units and directly substituted alkoxy group in back bone. EHF-PPV with fluorenyl unit attached to the PPV backbone has shorter effective conjugation length than EEPP-PPV with biphenyl unit, and exhibits blue shift in the PL spectra.

  • Concrete walls of neutron generating facilities such as fusion reactors and fission reactors become radioactive by neutron irradiation. Both low-activation and neutron shielding are a critical concern at the dismantling stage after the shutdown of facilities with a requirement of radioactive waste management. To tackle this, two types of additives were investigated in fabricating mortar specimens: synthetic high polymers and boron carbide. It is well known that a hydrogen atom is effective in neutron shielding by an elastic scattering because its mass is almost the same as that of the neutron. And boron is an effective neutron absorber with a big neutron absorption cross section. In this study, the effect of the type, shape, and size of polymers were investigated as well as that of boron carbide. Total 16 mix designs were prepared to reveal the effect of polymers on mechanical properties and neutron shielding performance. The neutron does equivalent of polymers-based mortar for fast neutrons decreased by 36 %, and the count rate of boron carbide-based mortar with regard to thermal neutrons decreased by 90 % compared to conventional mortar. These results showed that a combination of polymers and boron carbide compounds has potential to reduce the thickness of neutron shields as well as radioactive waste from reactors.

  • Hyperbranched liquid crystalline polymers with azomesogenic and cholesteryl groups in their terminal positions were designed and synthesized by direct polycondensation reaction. The chemical structures and thermal and mesomorphic properties of the synthesized polymers were investigated by FT-IR, $^1H-NMR$, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), and polarizing optical microscopy (POM). The inherent viscosities (${\eta}_{inh}$) of the polymers were measured to be between 0.30 and 0.50 dL/g in phenol/p-chlorophenol/1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane (25/40/35 = w/w/w). The degree of branching (DB) in these polymers ranged from 0.37 to 0.75; they, as amorphous polymer, showed glass transition temperatures ranging from 80 to $120^{\circ}C$; the polymers readily dissolved in most of the organic solvents used in the experiments. Only hyperbranched polymers with a cholesteryl group as their mesogenic group showed liquid crystalline phases.

  • This study was carried out to investigate changes in cell wall components and solubilization and depolymerization of pectin and neutral sugar polymers during softening of 'Tsugaru' apples. Pectic polysaccharides were solubilized in different solvents, distilled-water, 0.05 M CDTA, 0.05 M $Na_2CO_3$, and 8 M KOH, from cell wall materials during fruit softening. The uronic acid contents in distilled-water fraction rapidly increased along with fruit softening at 4 weeks after ambient storage. In the change of non-cellulosic neutral sugars in the cell wall of ‘Tsugaru’ fruits, the major sugar was galactose and arabinose in distilled-water, 0.05 M CDTA and 0.05 M $Na_2CO_3$ soluble fractions, and it was glucose, galactose and xylose in 8 M KOH fraction. Especially the change of galactose contents in distilled-water fraction was increased greatly along with fruit softening. When uronic acid polymers (UAP) and carbohydrate polymers (CP) in distilled-water fraction were filtered and separated using Sepharose CL-2B column, the high molecular UAP and CP were degraded to the low molecular ones from at harvest to softening fruit. Thus, the amount of high molecular polymers were greatly decreased along with fruit softening.
