  • This work is concerned with the improvement of the productivity and the product quality in the polymerization reactors by using model-on-demand predictive control(MoDPC). This technique is applied to a continuous styrene polymerization reactor and a semibatch methyl methacrylate (MMA)/vinyl acetate(VAc) copolymerization reactor. The regress is constructed with the most influential variables the conversion and the jacket inlet temperature for the styrene polymerization reactor, and the free volume and the reactor temperature for the MMA/VAc copolymerization reactor through open loop operations.   • Model predictive control algorithm requires a relevant model of the system to be controlled. Unfortunately, the first principle model describing a polymerization reaction system has a large number of parameters to be estimated. Thus there is a need for the identification and control of a polymerization reactor system by using available input-output data. In this work, the polynomial auto-regressive moving average (ARMA) models are employed as the input-output model and combined into the nonlinear model predictive control algorithm based on the successive linearization method. Simulations are conducted to identify the continuous styrene polymerization reactor system. The input variables are the jacket inlet temperature and the feed flow rate whereas the output variables are the monomer conversion and the weight-average molecular weight. The polynomial ARMA models obtained by the system identification are used to control the monomer conversion and the weight-average molecular weight in a continuous styrene polymerization reactor It is demonstrated that the nonlinear model predictive controller based on the polynomial ARMA model tracks the step changes in the setpoint satisfactorily. In conclusion, the polynomial ARMA model is proven effective in controlling the continuous styrene polymerization reactor.

  • A mathematical model was developed for a continuous re-actor in which free radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) occurred. Elementary reactions considered in this study were initiation, propagation, termination, and chain transfers to monomer and solvent. The reactor model took into account the density change of the reactor contents and the gel effect. A control system was designed for a continuous reactor using extended Kalman filter (EKF) based non-linear model predictive controller (NLMPC) to control the conversion and the weight average molecular weight of the polymer product. Control input variables were the jacket inlet temperature and the feed flow rate. For the purpose of validation of the control strategy, on-line digital control experiments were conducted with densitometer and viscometer for the measurement of the polymer properties. Despite the com-plex and nonlinear features of the polymerization reaction system, the EKF based NLMPC performed quite satisfactorily for the property control of the continuous polymerization reactor.

  • The on-line calculation method is developed to obtain the temperature trajectory that brings the reactants to the desired state in batch styrene polymerization reactor. The temperature trajectory is obtained by applying the moments of the polymer concentration to the 2-step calculation method. The computer simulation is also carried out to verify the superiority of the on-line method to the off-line one. When a temperature disturbance of constant size is introduced, the off-line results shows considerable deviation from the target degree of polymerization. The on-line strategy set up a new trajectory to reach the desired state by using the current state of the reactor. Therefore, the on-line strategy deals with the changes of the system more adequately than the off-line strategy.

  • Nonlinear unified predictive control(UPC) algorithm was applied to the temperature control of a batch polymerization reactor for polymethylmethacrylate(PMMA). Before the polymerization reaction is initiated, the parameters of the process model are determined by the recursive least squares(RLS) method. During the reaction, nonlinearities due to generation of heat of reaction and variation of heat transfer coefficients are predicted through the nonlinear model developed. These nonlinearities are added to the process output from the linear process model. And then, the predicted process output is used to calculate the control output sequence. The performance of nonlinear control algorithm was verified by simulation and compared with that of the linear unified predictive control algorithm. In the experiment of a batch PMMA polymerization, nonlinear unified predictive control was implemented to regulate the temperature of the reactor, and the validity of the nonlinear model was verified through the experimental results. The performance of the nonlinear controller turned out to be superior to that of the linear controller for tracking abrupt changes in setpoint.

  • The adiabatic slirn-type autoclave reactor for free radical polymerization of LDPE is represented by a two-compartment four-cell model, which is proven effective to predict the reactor behavior as well as the polymer properties. Since the temperature distribution along the reactor axis plays the central role for the properties of the polymer product, it is important in practice to regulate the temperature in each compartment. The present study aims for the application of the adaptive control algorithm not only in the period of start-up but also during the steady state operation. It is shown that the temperature control is significantly improved over the conventional PID-control and this also brings about a reduction of variations in the polymer properties. This study demonstrates the potential application of the adaptive controller for the control of the polymerization reactor operated under the adiabatic condition.

  • An adaptive unified predictive control (UPC) algorithm is applied to a batch polymerization reactor for poly(methyl methancrylate) (PMMA) and the effects of controller parameters are investigated. Computational studies are performed for a batch polymerization system model developed in this study. A transfer function in parametric form is estimated by recursive least squares (RLS) method, and the UPC algorithm is implemented to control the reactor temperature on the basis of this transfer function. The adaptive unified predictive controller shows a better performance than the PID controller for tracking set point changes, especially in the latter part of reaction course when gel effect becomes significant. Various performance can be acquired by selecting adequate values for parameters of the adaptive unified predictive controller; in other words, the optimal set of parameters exists for a given set of reaction conditions and control objective.

  • A mathematical model is developed to represent the batch reactor for free radical polymerization of PMMA The model is validated by comparing the simulation result with the experimental data. A computational scheme is proposed to determine the trajectory of the reactor temperature that will produce polymer product having the desired molecular weight distribution. For this instantaneous number average chain length and polydispersity are introduced to calculate the reactor temperature. The former is assumed to be a second order polynomial of the sum of the living and dead polymer concentrations. Various reactor temperature, trajectories are observed depending on the reactor conditions and prescribed molecular weight distributions. Fuzzy and PID control algorithms are applied to trace the reactor temperature trajectory. While the PID control gives rise to an overshoot when the trajectory changes its direction, the fuzzy controller yields a more satisfactory performance because it secures information on the trajectory pattern.

벌크 중합법에 의한 폴리스티렌 중합공정의 열적위험성 (Thermal Hazards of Polystyrene Polymerization Process by Bulk Polymerization)

  • 본 연구에서는 벌크 중합법을 이용한 폴리스티렌 중합공정의 폭주반응에 대한 열적 위험성을 가속속도열량계(ARC)와 소규모 반응열량계(MM)를 이용하여 평가하였다. 당해 중합공정은 반응온도 $120^{\circ}C{\sim}130^{\circ}C$로 운전되어져야 하며, $130^{\circ}C$ 이상의 반응온도에서는 반응 생성물의 급격한 점도 증가로 인하여 반응기의 온도제어 실패에 따른 폭주반응의 위험성이 존재하였다. 또한 당해 중합공정의 반응온도($120^{\circ}C{\sim}130^{\circ}C$)에서 공정운전 초기에 반응기의 냉각실패가 발생할 경우 폭주반응으로 인해 반응기의 온도와 압력이 각각 30 ~ 50분 이내에 약 $340^{\circ}C$, 5.3 bar 까지 급격히 상승하여 반응기의 파열판이 파열되거나 반응기가 폭발할 수 있는 열적 위험성이 높게 나타났다.

Reaction Condition Dependency of Propagating Behavior in the Polymerization Reaction by Thermal Front

  • In this study, the dependency of the behavior of propagating front on the reaction condition in frontal polymerization reaction has been studied. We have used some multifunctional acrylates as a monomer and ammonium persulfate as an initiator for the polymerization reactions. In frontal polymerization, a method of producing polymeric materials via a thermal front that propagates through the unreacted monomer/initiator solution, the behavior of self propagating front shows various dynamic patterns depending on the reaction condition. We have obtained some spin modes of propagating front in the number of 'hot spots' or 'spin heads' by changing the reaction condition. The effect of the reactor tube diameter on the mode of propagating front has also been studied by using some reactor tubes with different size of tube diameter and it has been examined in some detail by adopting an experimental method of two-tubes system.
