Ion exchange resins can be one of the good carriers for sustained drug release. However, the sustained release may not be enough only with themselves and hence film coating with rate controlling polymers can be applied to have a further effect on the drug release. Due to the environmental and economic issues of organic solvent for the polymer coating, aqueous polymeric systems were selected to develop dosage forms. Among the many aqueous polymeric dispersions for the film coating, EC (ethylcellulose) based polymers such as Aquacoat$^{(R)}$ ECD and Surelease$^{(R)}$ were evaluated.A fluid-bed coating was applied as a processing method. The drug release rate was quite dependent on the coating level so the release rate could be modified easily by changing different levels of the coating. The drug release rate in the Aquacoat$^{(R)}$ coated resin particles was strongly dependent on curing, which is a thermal treatment to make homogeneous films and circumvent drug release changes during storage. After dissolution test using the compressed tablets in which the coated resin particles are contained, inhomogeneous coating and even pores could be observed showing that the mechanical properties of EC were not resistant to granulation and compaction process. However, when tablets were prepared in different batches, the release profiles were almost identical showing the feasibility of the coated resin particle as incorporated into the tablet formulation.
In the polymeric dental restorative composites, the resin matrix mainly contains 70 wt% 2,2-bis[4-(2-hydroxy-3-methacryloyloxy propoxy) phenyl] propane (Bis-GMA), as a base resin and 30 wt% triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) as a diluent. Even though the viscosity of the resin matrix is rapidly decreased by adding TEGDMA, addition of TEGDMA to the Bis-GMA results in reduction in the mechanical properties and increase in the curing shrinkage of the dental composite. In order to fabricate dental composite exhibiting excellent properties by reducing TEGDMA content in the resin matrix, in this study, Bis-GMA derivatives, which do not contain hydroxyl groups, were used instead of Bis-GMA. The curing characteristics of Bis-GMA derivatives were similar with those of Bis-GMA, while the former exhibited lower viscosity and water absorption than the latter. Comparing the curing shrinkage of the dental composite containing Bis-GMA derivative with that prepared from Bis-GMA, the reduction in curing shrinkage was about 25%. Dental composites prepared from new resin matrices also exhibited low water uptake and better properties in mechanical strength.
Studies on the electrical treeing deterioration and dielectric breakdown phenomena in the polymeric insulator of polyethylene and epoxy resin were carried out. Block type samples with needle-plane electrode geometry were electrically stressed and the tree pattern from the needle tip was observed. In LDPE the density of electrical tree was very high and its pattern was bush type. For the case of XLPE, branched tree was observed. As temperature and SN content increased, the dielectric breakdown voltage decreased and the treeing phenomena became more complicated. Fan type cracks were observed around the conducting tree path in the brittle DGEBA/MDA system.
The adsorption of the anionic surfactants, sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) anion surfactants form aqueous solutions with nonionic resins, Amberlite XAD-2, XAD-4 and XAD-7 at temperatures in 15~45$^{\circ}C$ range was studied. Several adsorption isotherm models were used to fit the experimental data, The best results were obtained with the Redlich-Peterson equation and the Freundlich model provided remarkably good fits. For a particular resin at a particular temperature, SDBS was more extensively adsorbed than SLS. The highest adsorption were obtained with XAD-4 resin and the specific surface area of the resins plays a major role in adsorption of the surfactants. Estimations of the isosteric heat of adsorption were indicative of an exothermic process, and their magnitudes manifested a physisorption process.
Environmental problems caused by extensive use of polymeric materials arise mainly due to lack of landfill space and depletion of finite natural resources of fossil raw materials like petroleum or natural gas. The substitution of synthetic petroleum-based resins with natural biodegradable resins appears to be one appropriate measure to remedy the above-mentioned situation. This study presents the development of a composite that uses environmentally degradable starch-based resin as matrix and natural mineral basalt fibres as reinforcement, and investigates the fibre's and the composite's mechanical properties. The tensile strength of single basalt fibres was verified by means of single fibre tensile tests and statistically investigated by means of a Weibull analysis. Prepreg sheets were manufactured by means of a modified doctor blade system and hot power press. The sheets were used to manufacture specimens with fibre volume contents ranging from 33% to 61%. Specimens were tested for tensile strength, flexural strength and interlaminar shear strength. Composites manufactured during this study exhibited tensile and flexural strength of up to 517 MPa and 157 MPa, respectively.

Polyurethane resin used to leather coat was synthesized by the addition reaction of PPG and PTMG with different mole ratios. Physical characteristics of the synthesized polyurethane resin were measured by the SEM, FT-IR and the UTM. Increasing mole ratio of PTMG having four methylene groups caused the increase of abrasion resistance and tensile strength. The elongation was decreased. As we measured the solvent(toluene) resistance of poly urethane resin, it was found the there were no effect of PTMG mole ratios on the phyhsical properties of the resin. The viscosity was increased by ratio of PTMG mole ratio.
In this study, five representative, commercially available polymers, Ultem 1000 polyetherimide, Kapton polyimide, phenolic resin, polyacrylonitrile and cellulose acetate, were used to prepare pyrolyzed polymer membranes coated on a porous {\alpha}-alumina$ tube via inert pyrolysis for gas separation. Pyrolysis conditions (i.e., final temperature and thermal dwell time) of each polymer were determined using a thermogravimetric method coupled with real-time mass spectroscopy. The surface area and pore size distribution of the pyrolyzed materials derived from the polymers were estimated from the nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms. Pyrolyzed membranes from polymer precursors exhibited type I sorption behavior except cellulose acetate (type IV). The gas permeation of the carbon/{\alpha}-alumina$ tubular membranes was characterized using four gases: helium, carbon dioxide, oxygen and nitrogen. The polyetherimide, polyimide, and phenolic resin pyrolyzed polymer membranes showed typical molecular sieving gas permeation behavior, while membranes from polyacrylonitrile and cellulose acetate exhibited intermediate behavior between Knudsen diffusion and molecular sieving. Pyrolyzed membranes with molecular sieving behavior (e.g., polyetherimide, polyimide, and phenolic resin) had a $CO_2/N_2$ selectivity of greater than 15; however, the membranes from polyacrylonitrile and cellulose acetate with intermediate gas transport behavior had a selectivity slightly greater than unity due to their large pore size.

The use of deep water as drinking water is greatly limited of significant concentration of boron in sea water. Boron is reported to be toxic for human and plants. Some of possible methods are available to remove boron. The polymeric resins were synthesized to remove the boron from the sea water. The resin was characterized with IR analysis and the morphology was discussed with SEM images. To assess boron removal capacity of the resin, it was distributed in three different bead size i.e., 0.25mm, 0.5mm and 1.0mm. The removal behavior of this resin was examined under the batch experiments.
The dissolved oxygen removal by H$_2$-O$_2$ reaction in column packed with various catalysts wes examined. The catalysts employed were the prepared polymeric catalyst platinum on activated carbon, and Lewatit OC-1045 which is available commercially. The column experiments with the prepared polymeric catalyst showed the dissolved oxygen reduced to 35 ppb which is below the limit in feed water of power plants. This implies the likely application of the prepared catalyst for practical use. The activated carbon required the pre-treatment for the removal of dissolved oxygen, since the surface of activated carbon contains much oxygen adsorbed initially. The Lewatit catalyst exposed the best performance, however, the aged one showed the gradual loss of catalytic activity due to degradation of resin catalyst.
